A wonderfully simple piece of music, but given their unique treatment it has been elevated to brilliance. David Crosby is sadly missed. Stephen Stills, a master of his art. Graham Nash, whose harmony style influenced me throughout the almost 60 years I spent as a musician. Cannot be replicated. Always remembered.. Thank you.
Man, I don't know how simple it is, lol. Perhaps the score, but the picking is a real piece of art and a total pain to learn correctly. It's travis picking, but different, so even for a good travis picker it takes a lot of work to play it like the master Stills does. The harmonies are without compare, obviously.... incredible tune.
They had a very special harmonic sound. I think you'd love "Our House" and "Teach Your Children". "My Lady of the Islands" is a very quiet love song, with lovely, glowing imagery. They made wonderful music in their time together. :)
Let's not forget the Everly Brothers, who basically brought the whole thing to rock and roll. Nor the Beach Boys, who were as good as anybody at one time as far as close harmony singing....
Sarah. Released in 1969. Written by Stephen Stills, it uses words by way of aliteration eg helplessly hoping, wordlessly watching. Absolutely superb. They were later joined by Neil Young ( you loved his song Old Man a little while back ) who added an extra layer to the harmonies. The finest band ever. Unfortunately they didn’t last very long due to squabbling between them. You won’t go wrong with any track by them.
I recently watched on UA-cam a Documentary on how they first met. They immediately connected. I lived in Southern California for a short time, 20 years and had the opportunity to work on a home in Laurel Canyon. It was an amazing band, growing up myself in the 60's I got to hear the bands on a little red hand held transistor radio. The radio itself was something that was new technology and amazing for a 10 year old to have. I think I grew up just a few years to late because I wasn't able to go to Woodstock, I was 11 and my parents never understood Rock and Roll. Just the same I can remember where I was when I heard the Rolling Stones for the first time playing Lady Jane 1966 (The Ed Sullivan Show) I was 8 years old. Sullivan
@@weldonbailey1005I was just coming here to ask her the same thing! And to point out the alliteration of the lyrics. I never noticed that until I heard the Home Free version, it is so bare & stripped down, I could no longer miss it.
In David Crosby’s documentary, he said it took about 30 seconds singing together around Joni Mitchell’s kitchen table to know they had something special.
Right, the story, as I recall, was Stephen and David were singing a tune, and Graham asked them to do it once more, and the 3rd time inserted his perfect harmony into the song. Those guys were wizards.
@@helenespaulding7562 Lol, the lads themselves can't even agree whether it was here or Joni's house. Moot point probably, but thank God they met. What an incredible body of work they left for us to enjoy.
When you said: they are "meant" to be together... it brought a jolt of satisfaction into my heart. I've loved those guys for the past 40 years, Imissed them incredibly. They have shared so much, personally & musically. It had to be somehow. So meant? Oh yes, I couldn't agree more. They had their role to play in our lives. Thank you for doing this. Much obliged!
eh, not really true. Even CSN can't agree where their first meeting happened. Hell, David Crosby has straight come out and said so. It was either Mama's house, or Joni Mitchell's. And it was total happenstance, nobody 'brought them together'. Crosby and Nash had been just screwing around and jamming together, going out partying together and stuff, and one night at a dinner party stills happened to be there, added a new harmony part the third time through one of their songs, and they 'knew instantly' they had something unique....
Had the great privilege of seeing them live in a private concert at a trade show in San Diego years ago. Stills said, "If you had told me, when we were playing Woodstock, that one day we'd be playing a concert for old people at a pharmaceutical trade show, I'd never have guessed it." Entire audience went absolutely insane! It was one of the greatest concerts I've ever seen!
I only saw CS&N once, I think it was 1979, maybe 1980. Great show! I think I'll have to buy Sarah a coffee to request another lesser known but great song from their 1st album.
Except... NY didn't contribute much to CO or Deja vu at all. Took his tapes and did them himself, would drop them off later. He contributed on tour, which was why they asked him in the first place - SS had played all the instruments on 'Couch' (Dallas Taylor did some of the drumming, but not all) and had to put together a touring band.
@@melissa9375 I gotta say, I love NY's stuff, but I do not like him in CSN. His voice does not fit in well imho. I'm sure most people would disagree with me, but the other 3 are smooth like silk, and he's kind of nasally with a tinge of Hank Williams sound. I just don't think he fits in the act at all. I love Ohio, but the other CSN songs I really respect, NY is not involved...
It is, but it's a real bear to play it correctly. It's a good one to travis pick, but stills doesn't technically travis pick in it, and it's tricky as all hell to play it the way he does. Lots of two string pinches, almost like a banjo fingering...
Those three set the standard for harmony in the late 60s and 70s. I'd strongly recommend you listen to a cover by Home Free, an a cappella group of more recent vintage. Takes this to another level.
Thank you for the reaction, I haven't heard this in a long time. For your info, Home Free does a cover of this and, as good as this is, do yourself a favor and bless yourself by listening to the Home Free cover. It is incredible!!! Best wishes to you and yours
I’m glad you have discovered Crosby, Stills and Nash. Their harmonies were wonderful as were the lyrics to their songs. Even after all these years their music still captures my heart. I graduated from HS in 1965. Went to college for two years and enlisted in the Marine Corps in ‘67 and arrived in VeetNam during Tet. Our generation had such great music whether Soul or R&B. It’s hard to believe the country was in flames from on coast to the other over Civil Rights and later the Vietnam War and there were thousands of people marching in protest in the streets. Thank you Sarah💞

Give me a thumbs up, if you think Sarah should react to the song that I suggested above. 🤞
I was in college in the summer of 1969 and every day I would play this album. It is still one of my life’s favorites. This entire album is gold. And yes, it is about the insanely good harmonies. For some reason unknown to me, harmony in popular music has gone out of fashion. But in the 60’s and 70’s it was respected and desired. Huge groups like the Eagles, CSN, CSNY, The Byrds, The Beachboys, Simon and Garfunkel, The Beatles, The Everly Brothers and many more , the harmonies were exquisite. I wish there some current groups in mainstream pop that carried on this tradition. There are a cappella groups that have gorgeous harmonies but they are not mainstream.
