My wife and I have watched Rear Window at least 15 or 20 times over the past 35 years or so. It's one of those movies that you absolutely love but can't exactly explain why! Alfred Hitchcock and Jimmy Stewart were a powerful team! And what a pleasure watching a great grownup movie without being constantly assaulted with the F-bomb!!!
Awesome ranking! Some of these movies I still need to watch, but some of my favorite James Stewart performances are definitely films like It's a Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and Vertigo.
No surprises here. My favorite is IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. That and VERTIGO are in my top 100. But THE MORTAL STORM (which I just discovered last month) and THE PHILADELPHIA STORY are also 5 stars.
So far, I've watched exactly 50 James Stewart movies, with 4 more in the queue. he's also my favorite actor of all time. If I start listing my favorite movies with him, I'll get carried away and name half of the ones I've watched. However, I liked almost all the movies with him. by the way, my favorite director of all time is also Alfred Hitchcock :)
Thanks for greeting James Stewart ! I am French and maybe I couldn’t watch as many movies than on English speaking territories. Anyway I really liked « Of Human Heats » (in which he is one more time Beulah Bondi’s son !) and also « No Highway in the Sky » starring Marlene Dietrich, Glynis Jones and Jack Hawkins. I guess my favourites are The Shop Around the Corner and the 3 Capra’s. I loved The Mortal Storm in spite of its sadness, the other actors are so good : Maria Ouspenskaia, Frank Morgan, RobertYoung and Benita Granville. Special mention for a screwball movie : « It’s a Wonderful World » with my beloved Hollywood Frenchie : Claudette Colbert.
Glad to meet another fan! Definitely have a lot of these on my watchlist. I actually wasn’t the biggest fan of It’s a Wonderful World - found Stewart’s character to be super dislikable.
Great list but lacking some of his great Westerns. My top ten: 10) Winchester 73 9) 7th Heaven 8) The Man From Laramie 7) The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 6) Mr Smith Goes To Washington 5) The Mortal Storm 4) It's A Wonderful Life 3) The Shop Around The Corner 2) You Can't Take It With You 1) Vertigo
Nice list Nathan. I also think you need to check out some of his Westerns. He has a lot of great westerns besides the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Cheyenne Social Club, Winchester 73 , and many more. Take care Nathan. You do a great job on here as always. You have an old soul about you.
Thank you Paul! I’ve since seen several more of his Westerns including all his team ups with Anthony Mann. Haven’t yet seen Cheyenne Social Club, but definitely will watch someday.
I'd say my favorite James Stewart movies are Vertigo, Rope, The Philadelphia Story, and Vivacious Lady. Four is kind of an odd number but I'm missing some of the big ones he's in and there are some I don't remember as well. I showed my mom Rear Window a few days ago and she fell asleep.... To me it's not necessary slow but it's almost 2 hours and I forgot that to me it does feel like it's almost 2 hours. She hasn't seen many classics and this viewing definitely is going to make me deter away from showing her more in the immediate future- though she has been taking an interest in them more for a while now! I won't get into the whole story/explanation, I think I'll just show her some more recent films I think she'll be interested in before we go back to the classics. Also, that striped shirt really goes with your eyes!
Great choices! I need to see Vivacious Lady, it’s been recommended to me before! The first half of Rear Window can be pretty slow lol, hope she gives the second half a chance 🤣 and thanks!! 🤓
Ranking all the ones I've watched 1) Vertigo (10/10) 2) It's A Wonderful Life (10/10) 3) Rear Window (10/10) 4) Rope (10/10) 5) Mr Smith Goes to Washington (10/10) 6) Harvey (9/10) 7) Shop Around the Corner (9/10) 8) The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (9/10) 9) You Can't Take it With You (8/10) 10) The Man Who Knew Too Much (8/10) 11) The Flight of the Phoenix (8/10) 12) The Glenn Miller Story (8/10) 13) Vivacious Lady (8/10) 14) The Philadelphia Story (8/10) 15) Anatomy of a Murder (7/10) 16) Mr Kreuger’s Christmas (6/10) I watched The Glenn Miller story today and really enjoyed it!
Love the picks! Jimmy Stewart is definitely one of the best actors of all time. I loved the range of acting he had, dramatic such as in It's A Wonderful Life and Vertigo, and hilarious in Philadelphia Story. For crying out loud he was a Major General in the US Air Force! Doesn't get much cooler than that. My favorites of his are(I too haven't seen all of his films) 1.It's A Wonderful Life, 2. Rear Window, 3. The Philadelphia Story, 4. Vertigo.
James Stewart holds a special place in my heart. Not only was he the actor who got me interested in older movies, not only was he in some of my favorite movies (including my all time favorite It's a Wonderful Life) and not only does he share a birthday with my grandfather, but I genuinely think he may have been the greatest actor of all time.
Yes, the Anthony Mann westerns, and other Stewart westerns. Flight of the Phoenix too. You have great taste. Jimmy is the best ever. I'd say 1) Rear Window, 2) Liberty Valance, 3) Vertigo, 4) Naked Spur, 5) Mr. Smith
So I think you don't like any Western? Because I miss the great films Stewart made with A. Mann for example ,winchester 73' Diden't you like it or don't you like Westerns at all?
I love Westerns! I just hasn’t seen a lot of Stewart’s at the time of filming this. Here’s another video I made that I think you’ll enjoy: ua-cam.com/video/rR8RTLgHdfA/v-deo.html
Thanks for watching John!! Hard not to love James Stewart right?! I’ve been completing his filmography slowly this year and I hope to have a complete ranking out next year!
Funny enough I would too!! I rewatched them both since filming this. Today I actually watched my 50th Stewart movie! Here’s my updated ranking as of today: boxd.it/1Nfpy
Good Move 👌 I recently came across Vivacious Lady, an enjoyable flick I hadn’t seen in a long time..... love Ginger, they had good chemistry together. Many of Stewart’’s lesser known films don’t often show up, some not at all. I don’t purchase or collect films, but like most around my age, 72, I grew up as a kid in the 50s, when the vast amount of content on tv were old movies of all sorts all day long, sometimes 3 or 4 at a time on opposing channels. That being the case, there’s no generation more versed in black & white fins from the 30s, 40s, & 50s than my generation, for those of us that were paying attention. Many of those films I haven’t seen anywhere again to this day.
I could never hate you!! But that does break my heart just a little bit haha! Start with It's a Wonderful Life! Yes it's a Christmas movie, but only the last 30 minutes or so takes place around Christmas time
Excellent video! I just watched The Shop Around the Corner for the first time and fell in love with Stewart all over again! I hadnt watched any older movies in years and he takes me back to a time I spent with my grandmother watching Harvey which was her favorite James Stewart movie. HBOMax has a good selection of old movies right now and I hope they never take them off because they are completely timeless. Thank you for this video and your love and respect for such an amazing American classic actor. (PS Im also a Peter O'Toole nerd)
Hey Nathan! My name is Eghosa and I am one of your subscribers. I really appreciate your ranking of James Stewart movies on his birthday because of your real passion for film in the process. By the way, James Stewart is also my favorite actor as well and the film that got me into movies when I was fifteen was Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Mr. Smith is my favorite film of all time so I appreciate how much you adore it as well. In addition, I recommend this documentary about Stewart called James Stewart: The Last of the Good Guys considering that he is your favorite actor and that you want to know more about him. Also, I recommend Turner Classic Movies as a way to continue your growing knowledge of film along with the book which was created by Turner Classic Movies called The Essentials: 52 Must-See Movies and Why They Matter by Jeremy Arnold. Speaking of that, some of your favorite movies from James Stewart are in there and it will also make you want to watch other movies that you have not seen before as well. Thank you Nathan for this tribute and ranking of James Stewart and continue to be versatile and consistent in your film knowledge as well.
Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment! I have definitely utilized TCM for a lot of the James Stewart movies I've seen! I'm so glad you love Mr. Smith! In my top 10 of all time! Those books sound amazing!
