This was so helpful and unbelievably beautiful! Thank you.
Good old air conditioner filter material is my go to , in filter compartments , to hold back substrate ,as it lays better and is firmer . Or as a little pump cushy to be sure nothing gets in . It is very easy to sew if needed to make a custom application . Nice work !!!
This is not very well thought out at all.
First you will never ever be able to reach the pump again without destroying the whole set up should there ever be a problem with the pump (and there will be).
And secondly the substrate will always be wet encouraging mold etc.
Looks nice enough for the moment but it is not made for the long run at all. Shame.
This is why I was watching videos... I have a bioactive setup, and I wanted to add a water feature, but...how does one get to the pump without destroying all of it?? I'm glad to see comments like these, because I'm relatively new to it!
exatly the water realy need to run down to the hydroballs without touching the soil
LOOKS AWESOME - But....Agreed - ANY tank setup needs to be able to be cleaned - lizard pooping need to be cleaned up, that tank would be a nightmare to keep clean. Of course, getting to pump, which is inevitable would destroy the setup the way it is in this video. Should be a much deeper tank , front to rear, to allow for ALL THE MECHANICAL'S to be serviced from the rear, behind the cork. In addition, water in that environment would quickly become contaminated. TRY AGAIN
Absolutely gorgeous! I'm just looking around for ideas and this is it! Or a modified version until I can afford everything. Thank you x
Awesome great quality video! And awesome job on the terrarium it's the best I've ever seen. I'm defiantly inspired by this and will use these ideas for a school project.
Glad you liked the vid and found it inspiring! We'd love to see photos of your school project! Feel free to post them to our FB page (facebook.com/bigalspets)
This is a really, really cool setup!
+buddyzakocs - It looks incredible, right?!?!
+Big Al's How long does something like this last? I'm sure you'd have to change it out eventually, right?
Amazing how you did this without and adhesives or silicon. Looks just as good if not better than a foam background. With this type of setup did you keep the back substrate higher so as not to flood out the vivarium or does it matter?
This video is very useful for what I'm doing thanks a ton
That's very nice. Now I would like to set something up like this. really kool looking
what a work of art!
very nice!!! introduced some Ned products I didn't know about either!
+Adam Steerment - Awesome! Don't forget to send us photos of your process or the final result-- we'd LOVE to feature them on our social media pages!
+Big Al's after using the excavator for my geckos and getting awesome results, I am now going to be setting up my natural vivarium for my frog this weekend 👌😊
Beautiful set up!
so far 2 videos in and both of them are great.
Wish I could have that terrium it looks amazing😍
+Jacob E - You CAN have it-- pick up your very own waterfall kit and do something amazing with it :)
+Big Al's don't think I can I live in Australia, Victoria
This would be a good temporary set up. If the water pump ever quits, the entire tank needs to be dismantled. But This is a good idea!!!
I want to do something like this, but only on the corner of the tank for my blue tongue skink as her water bowl! And have a little pond where she can drink from with a mini waterfall
Same but I have a leopard gecko and just want a tiny stream but I have no clue how to do it lol
Absolutely Stunning!
+Tom Wootton - RIGHT!?!?!?! We love this setup. And it only took an hour or two to setup!
can you use it with the excavator clay
vitraX Re-mix no
Damn, Big Al's with that sick beat. Anyone got the song at the beginning?
wow! I'm surprised u never used any adhesives like great stuff or silicon, does the coco fiber hold on to that good?
the best setup ive ever seen it would look great with dart frogs☺🐸
how do you prevent mold or any fungus that might appear in all of that moisture?
This is so cool! but how do you clean the terrarium?
What would be the lifespan of a setup like this? I'm down to do everything, but i don't want to redo this every other month or so.
Very fine work. 👍
i would put red eyed tree frogs or satanic leaf tailed geckos in that what kind of plant is the red one with the stem?
Do you have to have live plants with the waterfall setup?
Do you think I could use a waterfall for a ball python for aesthetic reasons
Nice video. I want that! Can anyone tell me if the water will form on the sides of the glass to a point where it won't look good?
+Big Al's what an amazing setup! I have two questions what would be the cost of a setup like this, and could you give me a brief list of the plants you used? Thanks!
The set up for this tank would be at least over 300$ the tank (exo terra 18x18x24) is usually 110$-120$ the light is over 100$ and the hygrotherm is at least 100$ there is over 300$ not including plants moss, dirt, your reptile, the fogger , waterfall, cork background or the cork rounds
+Mr. Betta the 18 x 18 x 24 is 200 and that's in Canada with tax
Uni Horn Smiles wow thats alot but im in US and the state im in doesent have tax so things are always much cheaper sorry for canada but then again you have universal healthcare and poutine XD
hey, thank for sharing. i got almost the same viv set, but the cork board gets mold from time to time. if i use sunlight bulb and keep the humility low it wouldnt mold... but it is said the zoo med backboard product is mold free isnt it? how to get rid of the mold? i even clean out all the scene and dried everything out for a few years... but when put the board back it still mold... i currently introduced a lot isopods in, and they are eating the mold but still you can smell the mold if put nose on top the screen mesh of or inside of the enclosure. i'm actually worried about my little snake inside, and had to put a fan on top screen mesh of viv and keep it running most of the day while mist several times a day...
That was way awesome
wow gorgeous!!!
is it possible to make like a pond area that is around 4 to 5 Inches deep at the front of the tank using this method ?
How much humidity does the waterfall itself provide?
The way you set it up, of course, wouldn't provide the most humidity (the water is following the wood down, not falling straight down and misting into the air) but I'm curious how long this could sustain a terrarium on its own, or if the repti fogger is really necessary at all.
Do you think this would be ok in a 12x12x18? Or do you think it would be too much humidity?
Hello,
I have a question about the pump. Is the pump reliable and if it breaks do I have to tear down my entire viv?
Thanks in advance.
Really nice!
Nice idea for a temporary set up, but the majority of those plants are going to get far to big in a short while to maintain it for a reasonable length of time
Stuart Munro And that is why trimming down the plant is meant for.
what kind of critters love this kind of set up? maybe white tree frogs ?
Probably most tree frogs and dart frogs. African day gecko may enjoy it as well.
chinese water dragon would like it just if it was a lot bigger
does the coconut fiber or substrate make the water dirty? I've heard it does?
I wonder if someone can answer this question for me please... Does the water fall through the substrate? I see that there are some river rocks there, but if I wanted to adda a small pond at the end of the waterfall how would I line it so as not to wash away or waterlog the substrate?
AlphaTwinky yes the water falls through the substrate. The rocks are just decor
This guy made a good setup, but terrible at the same time. Thats why 90% of naturalistic bioactive tank builders will use silicon and foam. So you can properly keep filtration and substrate AWAY from water flow.
How do you deal with fungus gnats since you crashed the ideal place for their eggs and the animal poop?
Did you remove the substrate under the water fall and replace it with rocks? Im guessing you did this so the water would pass through rather then flood the top area? Also assume you didnt just throw the rocks on top of the soil.
9:39 great information!!
i dont understand how mold or soupy "dirt" isnt an issue. the waters running right into the "dirt".
It is a problem. Without a filter in their somewhere after a while the water will be a brown water. Doesn't hurt the frogs, just looks terrible
Instead of running just a water pump you could replace it with a small canister filter.
Would you need to have your canister filter in addition to the pump or do you just need the filter?
Mollie Mithaug-Cook the canister is the pump
I've been slowly getting the supplies to do this, but have a few questions. Is the fancy light necessary? I have two different lamps for my crested: one day and one night, mainly for temperature during the colder months. I'm not ruling out getting the light entirely, but right now, I have something. also the hygrotherm Too? is that a definite need (although I'm really interested in getting it anyhow). also what plants did you use? and where could I get them?! local nurseries and pet stores have nothing here.
Stephanie Ilavsky Fancy lighting isn’t always necessary. But if you’re adding live plants than you should be using a uvb light to allow the plants to grow. With plants, you can get any kind of tropical plant but there are limitations to what tropical plants to use as some could harm your cresties. You can have pothos, snake plants, jade plants, fern and a vide variety. www.joshsfrogs.com/plants-for-pets/plants-for-crested-geckos-1/show/all.html.
That website shows you what kind of plants you could use.
What do think I should get a chameleon or a crested gecko?
Question, so once it's all setup do you just let the water run thru the substrate and back down to the pump? It looked like you had a reservoir at the end that you never explained?
That is correct - the water flows through the substrate, down through the mesh, and into the drainage layer where the pump is sitting.
Would the substrate become too soaking wet, or does the water not spread into the surrounding substrate?
What animals is this suitable for because I'm getting a bearded dragon for Christmas and my parents want to get the terrarium ready now
This would be more for amphibians or reptiles that require moderate to high humidity. Like frogs, salamanders, and crested geckos. Bearded dragons are naturally found in the deserts of Australia so they need low humidity, heat lamps, and UVB lights. Research any details you want to know. I hope you enjoy having a beardie :)
can i use this this waterfall for geosesarma dennerle vampire crabs?
They like humidity between 80% and 100% but i am a bit affraid of mold
should I do this to my enclosure with my panther chameleon. it's a netted enclosure would it still work.
is it everything included in the waterfall kit?
Could a water fall be used in a Red Eyed Crocodile Skink enclosure?
Is this good for Brazilian Rainbow Boas? how often does the vivarium need to be cleaned?
Could someone please tell me if I could use a similar setup for a veiled chameleon I was unsure if this would provide enough climbing material to keep him happy ?
Same here, would love to know.
The problem i see with using it for a chameleon is the caging itself, chameleons need proper airflow and with that particular cage its all glass, i suppose you could use cork flats on 2 sides of the cage as the walls for the waterfall. Also if your chameleon is female you will need to make the substrate ABOVE the hydro balls thick enough to burrow in as they burrow to lay eggs. But it would be a great water source as chams dont see standing water. Also need room for them to climb as well.
Hi big Al I love this waterfall can be good for orchids and airplant? I want to make one thanks for the good instruction
I'm curious to know, what reptiles is this set up with a waterfall good/okay for? Any specific reptiles that could be in a foggy/moist terrarium? -Thanks
VampAlchemist You could do something like this in a large variety of reptiles that require humidity.
How many litres per hour was the pump?
do you have to clean the whole cage by taking out the plants, the waterfall kit etc?
+Κωνσταντίνος Μακρόπουλος Not usually, but that will really depend on the animal(s) you keep in the enclosure, and how diligent you are at removing their waste as its made.
Big Al's what did you put in the cage
Can you use the waterfall for a Leopard gecko?
if I keep a created gecko in there would I still have to mist it
do you know if this would work with the excavator clay, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't but i am still curious
Excavator clay is moist when you're using it to construct the environment, but then has to dry and harden. Once it becomes moist/wet again, it will lose structural integrity and begin to crumble, so using it in a waterfall/humid environment isn't recommended.
Will mold build up and will the water quality become bad?
Yes. The more water you add to a tank, the more it becomes like an aquarium and the more frequently it will have to be cleaned. On the plus side, moving water stays cleaner than stagnant water, so this is still leagues better than a fish bowl. Make sure there's plenty of airflow, too.
Yep I just add a crap ton of leaf litter, isopods, and springtails and they just eat it up. No mold for me!
So, i just want to ask how much for this all kit ?
what are you putting inside
So how would you clean that?
Does this filter the water?
what pump and tubing should i use
One problem when enough debris fall under the screen and clog up the pump you need to take the whole bottom apart to clean it. You are better off buying a premade waterfall that the pump is hidden inside the waterfall and you dont have to worry about debris.
Yeah but they look like shit
What is the point ofa fogger? Also how would you determine which plants are suitable?
Executioner Airsoft it gives heat
JJ Aquariums The digger does not give heat. It gives humidity.
Executioner Airsoft The digger is to use for humidity. And to determine what plants you can use you use google.
how and what nutrients you use to feed plants?
do u know what kind of reptiles can we put in there?
Prob a crestie
Can you reuse the hydro balls
Is it ok to put a waterfall inside a leopard gecko enclosure?
nope
please can u tell me what plants u used please
Is this an ideal setup for a leopard gecko?
absolutely not, leopard geckos come from arid environments. this is tropical
were can I get the whole tank with all the supplies in Rochester NY ?
+Roman's Reptile's - Thanks for asking! You can find the link to the kit itself in the video description, along with links for the majority of materials used! The only thing you'd have to get separately is a tank-- we can't ship them as they break too easily :( But you can place an order with us for everything else and we'll get it shipped to you ASAP!
Nestor Soto I live here too
OhDearInPubs cool you into reptiles also ??
Nestor Soto yeah
OhDearInPubs cool What side I live in the city
How much did all of this cost?
Can you do a turtle tank waterfall set up please
I tied adding a waterfall but got a HUGE mold issue. Anyone know how I can prevent mold?
You could try adding a bioactive cleaning crew. Isopods and I think springtails are especially good at clearing out mold.
would this be OK for a snake? retic to be specific
1. No its way to small
2. they need a lot much lower humidity.
Wow! That looks amazing, but... How hard is that to clean? XD
If there's live plants and microorganisms you don't need to clean!
Won’t the hydroballs mess up the pump by getting into the filter
Chrispy Cream No, the hydro balls are round, and would let water pass right through it easily.
Frantic NorthZ oh okay thanks
Well if you have a crested gecko good look because it is very hard to spot clean
will the fog hurt my chameleon ?
The substrate it just gona soak up the water before it reaches the pump
What are the dimensions of that cage
Kermit?
sounds like Kermit the frog >.< !
Would this work in a horizontal tank?
brandon shafer yes
Is this setup OK for a red eyed tree frog
kee kee I'm wondering the same thing. And what happens when the pump gets clogged
what is the pump's dimensions
Why is Kermit narrating this video?🤣🤣
can you use this with a beared Dragon
No. Bearded dragons need desert terrariums. Low humidity.
Ok
what's the size or the model of the tank>?
SilverZombie 18x18x24 I think
is this good for leopard geckos?
no
Could I use this for a chameleon? Not a proffesinal
SG Backer nope. Chameleons shouldn't be in a glass tank so no.
Well
Tiffy Cavy well I know that
This is so cool!! Is this suitable for a ball python?
Ramon Vasquez
no. It would be it humid.
Sha Lo K Not true, this set up can still be used with ball pythons. You just need to do it differently so you get the right amount of humidity for them.
Could you do this for a crested gecko
no as cresties need 50-60 percent and this is more like 75-85.
Layfayette No, not true. This can still be used and work well with cresties. You just need to work around and play with it a bit to get it to be right where you want it.
Can anybody list the plants he used?
