I took my ex-wife to the Hinds Head for her birthday a long time ago and the only sour note was her. The scotch egg was exactly as you describe and has stayed long in my memory. Missing from the menu now is the real (suet) steak and kidney pudding which in your lovely words was "wrong" the flavours were so deep and delicious that I wish I had spent longer on it. Triple cooked chips are an issue: his are/were delicious. Every other place I have had them (the list is long and inglorious) they have been stale reheated spud and a huge disappointment. Keep doing what you are doing Gary; we love it and you are...wrong!
I left the UK in the early 2000s for a few years. At that time, triple-cooked chips were a rarity. I followed Heston's recipe at home, and they always turned out excellent. By the time I returned to the UK in 2017, every other pub I went to was serving 'triple-cooked' chips. I don't know what they are, but they are far inferior to the real thing. As for portion size. That looks to me like a decent-sized portion. The recipe requires fairly precise control over oil temperatures, so it's possible the portion size is limited to prevent over-crowding the fryer and reducing the heat too much.

Wow wow wow!!! What a joyful occasion! Returning to an old faithful is always a good feeling. Heston is one of the most revolutionary chefs of our time! Cheers to Heston for challenging us patrons with his concepts and flavours! Thank you, Mr Gary for your continued authenticity and charm. You really do make a positive impact on thousands of people. Oh my Gary, I know £31 is a lot for fish and chips and I’m no millionaire but I’d definitely have that as a once in a lifetime treat! The crunch of that batter and those chips, fantastic! Can’t blame you for getting carried away! Excellent review as usual!👍👏👏❤️🏴
I wouldn't say it's a once in a lifetime price. £31 at a 1 Michelin Star restaurant. Fish and chips at chip shops near me are £14. Curry sauce £1.90, not sure how much mushy peas and that other chip dip would be, but I'm guessing the total woukd be around £19 for a takeaway.

I would pay those prices for a treat and the quality. Everything looked so good and from the faces and noises you were making Gary, it was good!!! Yes more chips, but to be honest- I would be full up anyway! I hope you left some scraps for the cameraman!! Well done lads - great review xx🥰
Felt like I was watching an episode of Most Haunted for a moment there with all the orbs. Was half expecting to hear a shout of “Mary loves Dick” from the kitchen when you started tucking into the scotch egg.
What an amazing video.. have always admired Heston but never been lucky enough to eat his food. That meal looked incredible, such fantastic crunch on that batter and chips.
I am so jealous. The sausage roll was full of sausage. The fish and chips looked absolutely amazing. I’d be happy to pay the £31 and I think there were enough chips for me. Their crunch factor sounded so good.
@@GaryEatshe's on the mend but still in treatment of course. That's all I can say because he was initially receiving treatment in a hospital I am working for. He's now working with the same staff but outside the hospital.
I don’t know why some say £30 for fish and chips in a beautiful restaurant is expensive. If the haddock was served with a sauce, rather than in batter with a few new potatoes rather than chips and a bit of broccoli no one would question the price. Another genuine, trustworthy review.
£30 for a bit of haddock and sauce, a few new potatoes and a spring of broccoli would still be expensive in my book, even if the restaurant is nice but I think you pay for the Heston effect in Bray.
Normally I would have issues about the cost. But when you’re paying for food of THE finest possible quality, I’m not complaining at all. It’s a special occasion treat, enjoying the food of one of the best chefs around. And so you’re not just paying for the food, you’re paying for the services of masters of their craft. Yes, a few more chips would help, and I think you’re justified by taking a fraction off the points. But I’d be there in a heartbeat, just to treat myself and my wife, to food we’d be unlikely to experience elsewhere. Fantastic review, as ever, Gary. 🙏🏻
I would pay £20 for that but certainly not 31. You are paying because of a so called celebrity chef who must see these people coming from miles away. 🙄
Hi Gary! I was very interested to see your latest video, having visited The Hinds Head myself a couple of times. That said my last visit was over ten years ago now, but I can still remember how good it was, and would love the go back some day. It seems it has lost none of its magic over the years? Your meal looked fantastic, and also quite generous! I understand your comments about the chips, but I have to say I find Heston's triple cooked fries so rich, I'm not sure I could eat a bigger portion! It's all the little extras that really add to the experience - the sauces, vinegar, etc. It's certainly not cheap, but I really think you get what you pay for - this is a Michelin star experience after all! I will now have to make it a priority to return at some point this year.
Subscribed to the channel. Gary seems to be real british gentleman doing food reviews. A very pleasant change from all the other bull shit that comes with some food reviewers. Appreciate you're videos Gary
At last a celebrity chef who goes out his way to produce a meal that is a pleasure to eat and at a price that is reasonable. The crunch of those chips and the batter was a delight to hear. Once again a fantastic review.
Thks Gary for visiting Heston, I feel we should all support him at this time. He's been so brave. The other week Ollie & Josh from the Jolly channel visited & Heston sat with them thru the meal, a joy to watch.
That was a tough watch, Jolly have such a hyper energy usually, but Heston's adjusting to really strong medication for his Bi-Polar and couldn't get enthused, it was bittersweet bordering on melancholic. I hope he gets well.
I've been following since i think 8k subs, yourself and cameraman deserve the success you're enjoying. Sausage roll and fish looked lovely but the chips were definitely the star of the show 🇮🇪👍
Love the backdrop Gary, only need a deerstalker and a pipe and you'd be the Lord of the Manor 👑😂 Food looked outstanding, just had fish n chips today from the headland and was 10/10 crispy batter too but that looked another level, I'd pay that price, easy. Keep up the great videos, hope you both had a superb weekend and congrats on the 230k plus subscribers, absolutely massively well deserved 👏👏👏👏👏
You'll never get disappointing food in a Heston restaurant like you might with other celeb chefs. He's not just a very good chef that combines flavours with classic techniques. He spends literally years figuring out methods to optimize flavour/texture etc. Best chef in the world and entirely self-taught. And Gary, if you knew what went in to making those chips so good you'd understand why you don't get a chippy portion 😂
OMG! I'm from Nottingham UK and been living here over in Pheonix AZ for the past 17 years and I miss my original Fish & Chips! watching this as made me very home sick for British Food! I make scotch eggs, and sausage rolls for my USA friends, and they go crazy for them! (it very difficult to get the UK ingredients) My mouth is still watering so thank you for bringing this epic great British food episode! and yes, I would pay 51 pounds / $62 for all that great food. keep up the great work!
@GaryEats Either the place needs a really good dusting or it was a trick of the light,no doubt caused by the bright sunlight pouring in through the window and the camera reacting to it ?.... The latter seems more likely.😀
This pub is great! The food is delicious, and it looks fantastic every time. The prices are amazing, making it a special experience that you should try at least once in a while.
Excellent review as usual, small point, 'Scraps' as I remember them, were the bits of batter that didn't stick to the fish. I don't remember any overcooked potato in there. Whatever, Great review as always.
Not every Friday night but, certainly an occasional treat. It all looks, and sounds, wonderful. Thanks for another splendid review. Your channel certainly brightens up my evenings.
Wow... I had Fish & Chips tonight Gary.... Yet... I think I would have gladly swapped mine.... Certainly looked Amazing.... Anne-Marie also agreed Lol .... Another brilliant insight done in the style of your very good self !!! Cheers Gary YNWA !!!
I hope he does too. I had a terrible breakdown 15 years ago, with similar outcomes of hospitalisation, I’m back at work but I’m still not perfect. Poor bloke Godspeed to him.
More than once on your reviews Gary and in my own experience I have thought that the portion of chips is governed by the size of the chip holder they have chosen, rather than them deciding on the portion size and then picking the right size holder.
Heston has a huge team of extremely good people behind him. They spend months, if not years, on designing stunning dishes always using the best of the best ingredients hence the prices. I watched a guy review a special Xmas menu with Heston at a £1000 a head 😮 It looked mind blowing 🤯 hope he manages to control his issue as he's an amazing individual
I recently watched a video documenting Heston’s mental health problems. It was a sad watch. I am hoping he finds some peace in the future. Working 18 hr days will send anyone loco. A truly driven man.
Heston is like a crazy culinary scientist, a true master of his art. £31 Doesn't seem expensive when you consider the amount of man hours it probably takes to design his dishes.
Oh wow! This looks sensational 😋 you can tell this is quality homemade food. Wish there was ‘tastevision’ could you send some through the screen haha 😅😛
I was only talking about this venue and the chef today and here you are . The quails scotch eggs look delicious. You have to praise the chef because as you know, quails eggs are small and fiddly so that would take skill, patience and light fingers to achieve those results. I love haddock and always with the skin on, so much more flavour. The fish, chips and the rest of the extras looked top notch. I'd pay that price as a treat, definitely. Super review our Gary and Son. Thank you for sharing sweet x 😊
@@GaryEats Thank you our Gary. They sure do and they're clearly trustworthy to be left to run the venue and keep to the high standards that Heston expects. Now Gary that truly is a wonderful skill for a chef to cook a scotch egg with a runny middle, perfection. The crunch of the fish n chips magnificent to my ear. Vinegar deodrant spray now thats you all smelling good too for the journey home, comedy gold 😂 I agree price is on the high end but for a one off you wont leave unhappy, great review yet again and delighted you enjoyed your fish n chips.
The touch of the lemon being wrapped in a bit of cheesecloth, so that the seeds don't fall on to your fish - brilliant! This shows the attention to detail that means the meal is really worth £31
It's a real treat after a grim day at work to sit back and watch one of your reviews. I have a list of eight restaurants you've reviewed that I will be visiting with the family this year. Cheers!
I made a comment about most celebrity chef branded restaurants being a rip off… one of the exceptions is Heston B. I’ve eaten at the fat Duck a few times and lucky to have met him. He’s not one for a scam. He spends so much on experimentation. Totally respect the man. Gary you the man too! :)
For Michelin starred food, in a fantastic place, I don't think that those prices are too bad. For most of us, I suspect, it's not the sort of place we'd go to every week so it then become a treat and what a treat. Great to see you back there Gary and thanks (and the cameraman) for the video. Cheers.
In today's high prices a legit Michelin star establishment asking for £31 for a fish mains is very reasonable! There are mediocre non-Michelin starred restaurants and fast food outlets asking for around the same amount or even more, only getting away with it with price gouging given their location and tourist footfall ...
As always an outstanding review, your channel has to be the best for dinning out. We will have to find time to visit the Hinds Head after this now. Do love your outings, well done the both of you. 😃😋 x

I'm so jealous after hearing the sound of the crunch on the batter and the chips. Heston has certainly won you over with the quality of this food and to hell with £31 for the fish & chips cos they looked amazing. I sadly can only imagine it for myself. 😭😭
I went to this restaurant a year ago for my 60th birthday, their was a lunch time special for three courses at £50.00. Of course I had the scotch egg for the starter and fish and chips as the main and to be honest I can’t remember exactly what I had for the pudding! What I do remember is I enjoyed every minute of being there, the food was fantastic, the best meal in a restaurant I have ever had. Glad to see you back there Gary and thank you for the great video you have given us all.
enjoyed this, as ever, thanks both. Was wondering what is floating around the screen though, am assuming it wasn't gnats or anything - almost looked like bubbles?
Hearing that crunch while you ate the fish. I have a craving! Fourtunately even though I live in Sweden my missus likes home made fish and chips! No prozes for guessing what we are making on Saturday!
I love your reviews, in my opinion, yourself, MacMaster, Rate My Takeaway, Just Deano and there's a few other I enjoy watching are a treat to watch and something I thjnk makes you stand out is you describe the environment so well and how significant it is, Every video that you or Lee or Danny post or most food journalists gets better and better as well and long may it continue and flourish.
Hi Gary, I just can’t get enough of your wonderful reviews. I always enjoyed watching Keith Floyd’s programs, which were interesting and informative, with lots of laughs. You certainly have a different approach, but I believe it to be more entertaining and diverse, also with some good humour and honesty. You have the ability to make everyone watching, desperately wanting to be part of the experience! That was a truly beautiful piece of battered fish! Of course when you mention the cost of each part of the meal, it just seems so expensive, and that’s because I live in South Africa. However, I have to acknowledge that it’s an issue which isn’t completely valid as in the UK, the money people earn has more buying power. Keep up the great work Gary, and all the very best to you and your son, take care and best regards, Rob in Durban, S Africa.
The crunch of the batter was outrageous. Great video again Gary. Confession time : when you first popped up on my homepage I was none too interested. Then I decided to ….wait for it….Give it a go. I’m glad I did.
I tried the fish & chips here last year and although it was of great quality and freshness, I found it all a bit too dry and the pickled onion spray didn’t really seem to do much. Give me a good quality bag of fish & chips in a paper bag drowned in vinegar and some tomato sauce over this any day, as you get a mixture of crispy batter but also some soggy bits from the steam in the bag which I think is the perfect combination.
Brilliant review once again Gary. Thankyou. I have eaten at the Hinds head, but it was many years ago. I can’t remember how many triple cooked chips I got, but I had beef and oyster pie that was extremely tasty.
I alway pause the video when you show the menus ...so I can check out the Lamb dishes . Great review my Friends . I don't mind paying a bit more knowing Im going to have a fantastic meal in a great location . Its all about the consistency . Blessings all .

I have a question and i may have missed it, the haddock, was it fresh or frozen, i did not notice on the menu, i know the batter is fresh, im only wanting to know about the haddock, is it brought in fresh, or the from the 7kg boxes frozen at sea, I was fish monger in London for 15 years
@@GaryEats thanks for that, 31 quid for that size portion looked like 16oz plus, for fresh haddock even cod, i think is not a bad price, against the frozen at sea fish alot of places use. I agree you can tell the difference

Thanks for doing these Gary, just the type of soothing video I need right now, you have a very soothing voice, could listen to you for hours. Keep up the great work
Are you ok? Thank you
@GaryEats tough times at moment but your vids help, thank you
I really hope it gets better for you
Wow wow wow!!! As always, Godspeed Mr Gary, and I cant wait to see what you're up to next. CHEERS from across the pond.🇨🇦🍺🇨🇦🍺🇨🇦

Absolutely well said!!
Same! The atmosphere alone would be worth it for me. It's just beautiful.
once in a lifetime ?
surely ….once a year at least
I wouldn't say it's a once in a lifetime price. £31 at a 1 Michelin Star restaurant. Fish and chips at chip shops near me are £14. Curry sauce £1.90, not sure how much mushy peas and that other chip dip would be, but I'm guessing the total woukd be around £19 for a takeaway.
@@AllyRobson surely better off than me!😊
Oh wow, the crunch from those chips and, I could smell the food here in Scotland. Well done for another wonderful review .

He is a genius Moe
Yes anyone that charges 31 GBP for chips must be struggling with their mental health ! Or guilt !!
@@TheRightsvilleit's outrageous for that amount of chips yet people pay for it. You have to wonder about some people.

£50 for some of the best food,in a Michelin star place, as a treat, yes yes yes 🙌 Great job Gary 🫡
Looking forward to this one before l even clicked on it Gaz,l watch every video. Keep up the great work mate👍
Thank you very much, Malcolm. It’s really appreciated.

I would pay those prices for a treat and the quality.
Everything looked so good and from the faces and noises you were making Gary, it was good!!! Yes more chips, but to be honest- I would be full up anyway! I hope you left some scraps for the cameraman!! Well done lads - great review xx🥰
Lol cameraman worth 220k subs Gary only 10k
Not, joke.

The sound of those chips alone is enough to make me want to travel across Europe. Another great review. Thanks, Gary.
Felt like I was watching an episode of Most Haunted for a moment there with all the orbs. Was half expecting to hear a shout of “Mary loves Dick” from the kitchen when you started tucking into the scotch egg.
Lol very funny!!
I don't get it ..Did Mary love Dick then?
Orbs without a doubt.
I was thinking the same thing. orbs or dust...
😂😂😂
What an amazing video.. have always admired Heston but never been lucky enough to eat his food. That meal looked incredible, such fantastic crunch on that batter and chips.
This was excellent cooking
I am so jealous. The sausage roll was full of sausage. The fish and chips looked absolutely amazing. I’d be happy to pay the £31 and I think there were enough chips for me. Their crunch factor sounded so good.
It was very very nice Pamela
Sad to see what happened, hope he’s on the mend!
Yes indeed
Who do hope is alright
@808haggis Heston had a mental breakdown.
Chemical imbalance, I believe.
@@GaryEatshe's on the mend but still in treatment of course. That's all I can say because he was initially receiving treatment in a hospital I am working for. He's now working with the same staff but outside the hospital.
Thanks Gary that was great. Thinking its a very haunted pub!!! all those Orbs. Eerie LOL
Indeed Nick, very very scary. No it was dust, we didn't notice them as it's due to the sunlight from the window creeping in

yes a lot of them every where

I don’t know why some say £30 for fish and chips in a beautiful restaurant is expensive. If the haddock was served with a sauce, rather than in batter with a few new potatoes rather than chips and a bit of broccoli no one would question the price. Another genuine, trustworthy review.
You are completely right and thank you
I’d pay £31 for a meal like this, to sit in a pub with a lovely atmosphere, eat every bit of my dinner and looking by this he’s really enjoying it.
I really appreciate you understanding thank you very much as always, Alec
I would pay £20 for that but certainly not 31. You are paying because of a so called celebrity chef who must see these people coming from miles away. 🙄
@@peternagy-im4beyou probably wake up,to see if you’ve lost any sleep. 😂🤜
Another wonderful video 😃😃😃 You will soon have 250k subs, and I really understand why. Your videos are real quality! Warmest thoughts 😀
Thank you very much Mattias
When you get an excellent meal, you don’t mind paying the extra money because you will remember it forever
Great way to start off the week with a Gary Eats review. Looking forward to it. Hope everyone is having a great day.
Thanks! You too Bino

At last a celebrity chef who goes out his way to produce a meal that is a pleasure to eat and at a price that is reasonable. The crunch of those chips and the batter was a delight to hear. Once again a fantastic review.
Thank you very much, Nigel. This was well worth the money.
I wasn’t aware that he was unwell. Hope he is doing ok. I really enjoyed his tv shows. Hopefully I’ll dine in one of his restaurants one day.
used to watch them but some of the crap that one of them did during Covid made me stop watching them
I really hope he gets better soon and I will watch that video!
I've been following since i think 8k subs, yourself and cameraman deserve the success you're enjoying. Sausage roll and fish looked lovely but the chips were definitely the star of the show 🇮🇪👍
I appreciate that Jay, thank you
Love the backdrop Gary, only need a deerstalker and a pipe and you'd be the Lord of the Manor 👑😂 Food looked outstanding, just had fish n chips today from the headland and was 10/10 crispy batter too but that looked another level, I'd pay that price, easy. Keep up the great videos, hope you both had a superb weekend and congrats on the 230k plus subscribers, absolutely massively well deserved 👏👏👏👏👏
Lol brilliant Andrew, that did make me laugh lol!! Thank you very much
@GaryEats Just meant it looked a very lovely pub and food looked amazing 👍
You'll never get disappointing food in a Heston restaurant like you might with other celeb chefs.
He's not just a very good chef that combines flavours with classic techniques. He spends literally years figuring out methods to optimize flavour/texture etc. Best chef in the world and entirely self-taught.
And Gary, if you knew what went in to making those chips so good you'd understand why you don't get a chippy portion 😂
Very true! I know but I wanted more!!
Tony..I'm still living in Nottingham UK,where are you originally from ?...Hopefully now DJT is back in charge the USA's woke nightmare will end.
Thank you very much, really appreciate it
@GaryEats Either the place needs a really good dusting or it was a trick of the light,no doubt caused by the bright sunlight pouring in through the window and the camera reacting to it ?.... The latter seems more likely.😀
This pub is great! The food is delicious, and it looks fantastic every time. The prices are amazing, making it a special experience that you should try at least once in a while.
Thank you very much, Mark
Excellent review as usual, small point, 'Scraps' as I remember them, were the bits of batter that didn't stick to the fish. I don't remember any overcooked potato in there. Whatever, Great review as always.

More than once on your reviews Gary and in my own experience I have thought that the portion of chips is governed by the size of the chip holder they have chosen, rather than them deciding on the portion size and then picking the right size holder.
I have to agree with you
Heston has a huge team of extremely good people behind him. They spend months, if not years, on designing stunning dishes always using the best of the best ingredients hence the prices.
I watched a guy review a special Xmas menu with Heston at a £1000 a head 😮
It looked mind blowing 🤯 hope he manages to control his issue as he's an amazing individual
Well said Chris, I would have loved to try that... maybe something for next year
Apparently, chefs are encouraged to design new dishes but, Bloomenthal owns the rights.
I recently watched a video documenting Heston’s mental health problems. It was a sad watch. I am hoping he finds some peace in the future. Working 18 hr days will send anyone loco. A truly driven man.
It is very sad, Peter, but hopefully he will come through very soon
Heston is like a crazy culinary scientist, a true master of his art. £31 Doesn't seem expensive when you consider the amount of man hours it probably takes to design his dishes.
He is an absolute genius
Oh wow! This looks sensational 😋 you can tell this is quality homemade food. Wish there was ‘tastevision’ could you send some through the screen haha 😅😛
This was excellent cooking Melissa
Brilliant comment tastevision would be great 👍
I was only talking about this venue and the chef today and here you are .

Thank you very much Bryon, hope you are doing well
The touch of the lemon being wrapped in a bit of cheesecloth, so that the seeds don't fall on to your fish - brilliant! This shows the attention to detail that means the meal is really worth £31
I agree the attention to detail is excellent
I genuinely hope you're taking the piss!

It's a real treat after a grim day at work to sit back and watch one of your reviews. I have a list of eight restaurants you've reviewed that I will be visiting with the family this year. Cheers!
I really hope you have a far better day tomorrow
I made a comment about most celebrity chef branded restaurants being a rip off… one of the exceptions is Heston B. I’ve eaten at the fat Duck a few times and lucky to have met him. He’s not one for a scam. He spends so much on experimentation. Totally respect the man. Gary you the man too! :)
Thank you very, very much for your comment
For Michelin starred food, in a fantastic place, I don't think that those prices are too bad. For most of us, I suspect, it's not the sort of place we'd go to every week so it then become a treat and what a treat. Great to see you back there Gary and thanks (and the cameraman) for the video. Cheers.
I think the food was excellent, thank you
In today's high prices a legit Michelin star establishment asking for £31 for a fish mains is very reasonable!
There are mediocre non-Michelin starred restaurants and fast food outlets asking for around the same amount or even more, only getting away with it with price gouging given their location and tourist footfall ...
Very nice atmosphere. Warm. Comfortable. Beautiful Wood. A fire in the fireplace. Great for digestion *burp* 😃.

I went to this restaurant a year ago for my 60th birthday, their was a lunch time special for three courses at £50.00.

12:45 pardon? lol
Haha! Exactly what I heard ! . Clearly an innocent slip of the tongue.
I am really surprised by that, but if it wasn’t good, you would know as you ate it
To be fair we aren't far away from the average chippy costing is 30 for a meal.

what kind of qualifications are needed to work there? or is it just being tough? I sometimes think about working on a ship :D

I have a question and i may have missed it, the haddock, was it fresh or frozen, i did not notice on the menu, i know the batter is fresh, im only wanting to know about the haddock, is it brought in fresh, or the from the 7kg boxes frozen at sea, I was fish monger in London for 15 years
The head was fresh, Sean
@@GaryEats thanks for that, 31 quid for that size portion looked like 16oz plus, for fresh haddock even cod, i think is not a bad price, against the frozen at sea fish alot of places use. I agree you can tell the difference
