Gosh, what a great dose of nostalgia or a history lesson for those who are younger. Loved the sandbags and the taped up windows. And no effort spared inside to make it look and feel authentially WW2, short of an air raid! I loved the wall honouring service people too. I'm going to have to pay this a visit! Also no rationing, which was the biggest bonus! And the breakfast looked fresh and tasty. All around smashing for a novelty meal. I loved it. The prices were great. Maybe It's a little bit run of the mill, but for effort, detail and heart and soul, it's got to be a 10 out of 10 from me.
So nice to see another demonstration of how, with hard work, a bit of vision, and overall attention to detail, the independent cafe can still still hold its own amidst a sea of cookie-cutter chains. And good on you and your channel for continuing to cast a spotlight on these kinds of venues.
I used to live in High Wycombe, and Years ago, when this was a pub called The Bell, it was my local. It has changed alot since then. I will have to pay it a visit!
Ohh How cool was this. What a great idea for a cafe. Without fail, Gary gave us a real good viewing experience and insight into somewhere special to visit on our beautiful Island.
The concept for this restaurant itself is unique and intriguing! And the food was/is so tempting. Keep supporting the small, independent businesses, Gary.
Good review Gary, a modern take on a 40s theme, my nan a proper east ender would walk from Wapping to the back door of the Ritz hotel for a bag of broken biscuits handouts, to feed the kids. That’s what wartime was like in London. ❤
This one was terrific Gary, loved it,I could spend hours there looking at everything.I’m probably more interested than some as I was born in 1944,and of cause my parents talked about the war for years,as it was still very much in their minds. As rationing went on to 1953 I also remember that,Mom buying uncleaned chickens,to clean herself to get extra eggs, usually about 2eggs,and several yolks for cake making.Enjoyed this one very much.
Oh my gosh.. its nostalgic coziness and hearty meals and warm company. Memories of my Grand Aunt Winnies Front Room,- especially for Guests - in Ruthland. Muted colors, small rooms, mantle clocks and ornate gold mirrors. Everything looked divine. Our Cameraman ate today?! He has such skill.. the shots are superb! Gary I loved this video. I really enjoy these type of places filled with history and bric-a-brac from a time gone by. This restaurant is right up my alley. The food looked good and I agree a nine is an appropriate mark. Gary you're really are hitting your stride with the content being produced. Keep up the outstanding work..............Cheers.
My grandfather fought in ww2 we still had stuff from the war he showed me i loved it. Thanks for doing videos like this i never knew places like this still existed
As a bit of a WWII buff, this place is right up my street! The amount of thought, time and effort the owners must have put into acquiring all those artefacts and trinkets must be staggering. Sometimes when you first enter a restaurant or cafe, I immediately hope it's going to be good, and this place is a prime example! I'm so pleased you give it a good score, it would have been a tradegy if the food had been a let down. One very small correction, and I'm not being a smartass here, but that Messerschmitt was actually a Focke Wulf 190. I know I'm being petty, and it isn't even important, the Americans never could tell their aircraft apart either, much more serious as they were manning anti-aircraft guns at the time... And finally, what am I going to give it..? You know what, I'm giving it a ten out of ten. This is a place I would definitely make a point of visiting, indeed I would be almost tempted to fly to England from Northern Ireland, just to do just that! A truly excellent video of a most remarkable establishment, thanks so much for bringing it to my attention.
I asked the cameraman what planes they were and he said Spitfires and Messerschmidt so I'm going to let him take the blame on that one as he considers himself a bit of a WWII enthusiast. It was his choice to come here and I'm overjoyed you loved the video.
What a wonderful place, nostalgia everywhere. It's like the Tardis. I cannot get over how fantastic the place is, you could spend hours just looking at everything. Breakfast looked so inviting. The chips looked great. Clotted cream again, nothing better, a cream tea. It's a ten from me. What a magnificent place. I really enjoyed everything about this wonderful place. Weĺl done Gary.
We were there a few weeks back as we'd gone to The Hell Fire Caves.....absolutely loved it..... Reminded me of my parents, Mum.grew up in Ireland during the war born 1936, Dad, born 1921, was a Burma veteran former Chindit.....& my husband is into Military history so a win win..... We both had the breakfast as did our 16 year old but minus the beans as she hates them......the service is excellent and the people who run it are so friendly and accommodating.... When we were in it was quite busy but that didn't detract from the service, spot on. Definitely one to go back to next time we are out that way. Good 9/10 score Gary......excellent review and very fair.
Hi Gary and Mr cameraman.. another lovely relaxing vlog..I would choose tinned plumb tomatoes..for no other reason than memories of my mums breakfasts..vine tomatoes are just as acceptable..and for me you got the scones perfect..cream then jam..my reasoning behind that is..butter is made from cream..and on bread butter is always spread first..😉🤭..or am I overthinking things..ha ha..😂👍
@@GaryEats I could be wrong, Gary but I think in Devon it's cream first then jam and in Cornwall, jam first then cream! But what does it matter?! It all goes down the same way! WOW!!! What a wonderful experience Gary. The whole set-up was amazing and the 1940’s music in the background was perfect. On the food--the Tommy’s breakfast was delightful, lovely platter. Ham, egg and chips 👌. That scone and clotted cream, first class. Thank you so much for sharing this experience with us Gary. Certainly cheered me up. Set me up for our forthcoming Easter. Have a blessed time as well 👍💎👍💎👍
For authenticity fried bread instead of hash browns, jam in a pot (not those awful plastic tubs) and spam to replace the bacon. I am a war baby and that was our weekend treat breakfast with our one 'black market' weekly egg ! The cream was made from dried milk and Echo margarine was our bread spread.
I agree . Fried bread . Not keen on hash browns . Awful things . My dad used to have chips with his breakfast. Home made of course . It was an old fashioned way of filling up. He served in Africa and survived.
Exactly Roy, I was there too. Our house was built in 1939 just before the war kyboshed house building. One of the posher semis at the time. We had a small built in fridge freezer. Something almost unheard of at the time. Mother used to make us ice lollies from custard powder, and cottage cheese hanging in an old stocking (not nylon) on the washing line.

Got really hungry now!! 😁 Absolutely a museum/cafe which now is on my to visit list. Hi, Frank. Hope you are doing well. It's just a very fun and enjoyable experience. We really need more places like this and you're right, it's a blend of a museum and cafe. A wonderful place to go. Take care and have a superb Easter!

Gary, I’ve never seen anything like this before. Thank you for reviewing this place. A very well deserved 9/10 and it warms my heart that places like this exist. I’m catching up on all the reviews I’ve missed as I’m new to your channel and cannot wait to try The Dome in Edinburgh. It’s not as pricey as I thought it would be so it’s now on my ever growing lists of places to dine at. Hoping you’ve had a loving and chilled day today with your family. ❤ 😊
I can't believe places like this exist! Your paying for the whole experience, not just the food! Takes my back especially seeing that kitchenette you walked past, what a great vlog 👏
We have a 40s café where I live on the Isle of Wight in the seaside town of Ventnor which is not as big as this one. It's lovely in the summer with a pot of tea and a slice of cake👍
The place looks great. Breakfast looked ok but I prefer tinned tomatoes and my toast unbuttered on a seperate plate. The sliced ham, egg and chips was ok but would be better with peas instead of the salad. Cream scone looked really nice. On the whole a great experience.
Not true. they are equally as good cooked under a grill right next to the bacon you are grilling, which is alongside the tomatoes you are also grilling. Under a grill you can cook everything apart from frying the egg. I have an Air fryer, they have their uses for sure, but they are over rated and take twice as long and are shit when it comes to cooking multiple items no matter how big the draw is, for say erm a family of 5.
Thank you Gary, a great nostalgia experience. The breakfast looked fantastic. Thank you for supporting a small business like this. The eggs looked fantastic and glad the has browns passed muster😊
If this was an authentic breakfast he wouldnt be having anywhere near that much food, especially the meat 😅. I think modern food is better to compliment the world war vibes.
Just outside of High Wycombe you had both RAF Bomber Command (Arthur ‘Bomber’ Harris) at Walter’s Ash/Naphill and also the HQ of the USAAF 8th Air Force (Ira Eacker) in the grounds of Wycombe Abbey School (later a NATO base and closed a few years back), Daws Hill. Consequently there was a large US presence in Wycombe from 1942 onwards, so maybe hash browns aren’t so out of place ;-) Air Raid Cafe is a local gem!!!
The price should have been ignored. When the bill came, a 10 bob note and asked for the change. Now, that would have been authenticity! Seriously, it's a fine place with good food. Good review, and thanks for taking us along. Appreciated.
This place looks far too british to be showing. 😂 Some viewers might get offended. 🙄 Great looking fry, would much rather plum tomatoes than fresh tomatoes, personal preference.
That place is absolutely incredible. The attention to detail and thought that went into it is a joy. I don't know if you can recall a childhood animation program called 'Mr Benn'? He walks into a dressing room, tries on a costume and when he steps out he's in a different time and place. That air raid shelter really gave me them recollections. It's pure escape, pure enjoyment and highly educational for all ages and generations. I'd actually make an excuse for them saying the bacon was overdone deliberately as after all, it's an air raid shelter. No such thing as Roux-esque style cuisine in them days, you got what the ration book dictated and who was handiest with a pan. Your best review yet for me. 👏👏👍👍
This place is a gem, Gary. A gem. I just love the setup of this restaurant. Takes you back in time and the incredible memorabilia everywhere. Oh my goodness! I don't know how you find these places, Gary. You got good taste, Gary. Good taste! That breakfast looked scrumptious. I had a smile on my face watching this review. 9/10 is a fair score. I'd definitely support a business like this!
You said you had a smile on your face, and yes you did smile. I however was sitting back with my cuppa beaming like a Cheshire Cat. It’s the first time I ever noticed me doing that. Thanks and well done. 👍
I think that was possibly the nicest looking breakfast I've seen on your reviews. Maybe hash browns aren't traditional in an English breakfast but there was a lot of US military in that area during the war and potatoes and onions weren't rationed so it makes sense that they came into the diet of UK around then. And if people want to be really picky in terms of history..... tomatoes came to us from South America and beans came from North America 😊 that place looks like it's well worth a visit. Thank you
What an interesting place just wonderful. I went back and watched walk through twice. Food looked very good. And as usual. Thank you Gary for taking us with. You. I can t wait till spring comes over here

That for me was one of your best vlogs as I’m into food and military history specifically WW2! The owners have done an amazing job not just acquiring period ephemera but providing ample sustenance too… It reminded me of a museum in Dalbeattie, Dumfries & Galloway but they don’t provide food, another local consortium of volunteers keeping local history alive which I love!
I really appreciate that Bill. I knew quite a few of you would like the setting but I've been stunned by the amazing feedback. The cameraman also enjoys this type of scenery, it was his choice originally. Glad you liked it.
How lucky are you to visit such a lovely place, there's items and furniture in there that I can remember being in my grandma's little council bungalow, I was only 9 when she died in 1969 and I have fond memories of her especially her blonde hair lol, thanks Gary 👍

*Great video Gary , you should have danced the 1940s Charlston when walking in 😊 👍*
The Charleston was from the 1920’s. Gary would have been twenty odd years too late 😊
@@Ayslhyn *As per Wikipedia, they were still danced in the 30s and 40s* 😊
Haha thank you!
1920S
A properly cooked breakfast! Lovely. What a wonderful place and I love the odd crockery.
Glad you enjoyed it!!
You gotta get into eating mushrooms Gal.
Challenge incoming lol
Good mushrooms are amazing abd very healthy 😅@GaryEats
@@GaryEatsdon’t do it Gary!
Great review Gary. Vine tomatoes are a nice touch, not keen on tinned tomatoes on a breakfast, love mushrooms and I do like hashbrowns!
Might have to do them with you Greeno lol
What a fabulous place, it’s on my list of places to visit and of course good food and fun with it.
I hope you have fun when you go
The place looks great.
Breakfast looked ok but I prefer tinned tomatoes and my toast unbuttered on a seperate plate.
The sliced ham, egg and chips was ok but would be better with peas instead of the salad.
Cream scone looked really nice.
On the whole a great experience.
Nooooooooo ❣ tinned tomatoes? 😢
That's fair enough Richard and a good comment
@@melanytodd2929 Yes that’s a proper 40’s breakfast, much as I like vine tomatoes it’s got to be tinned plum tomatoes.
Amazing place.. Will have to visit myself when I'm next in the area. Great review Gary 🎉😊😂
*Hash browns are best cooked in an air-fryer for that crispy top and soft center 😌*
True!! These were fantastic hash browns I must say
Not true. they are equally as good cooked under a grill right next to the bacon you are grilling, which is alongside the tomatoes you are also grilling. Under a grill you can cook everything apart from frying the egg. I have an Air fryer, they have their uses for sure, but they are over rated and take twice as long and are shit when it comes to cooking multiple items no matter how big the draw is, for say erm a family of 5.
@hullster9970 *you apply the same technique in an air-fry for more convenience....get a larger air fryer or maybe even 2 😊*
Thank you Gary, a great nostalgia experience. The breakfast looked fantastic. Thank you for supporting a small business like this. The eggs looked fantastic and glad the has browns passed muster😊
This is a fantastic cafe Fiona the owner has out some much effort in to make it work
Hash browns on a 1940s breakfast. Controversial, but it looked decent.
I blame the GIs...
The US played their part very well!
I could have happened, many US soldiers in the UK at the time.
Thank you Gary for taking us on another great adventure.
You are more than welcome anytime
The price should have been ignored. When the bill came, a 10 bob note and asked for the change. Now, that would have been authenticity!
Seriously, it's a fine place with good food. Good review, and thanks for taking us along. Appreciated.
lol Thant made me laugh Jeff if only 👍
Oh my god Gary. That has got to be one of the best places you have been to. I am definitely going to visit there. My wife will love it too.
Have fun! Thank you
This place looks far too british to be showing. 😂
Some viewers might get offended. 🙄
Great looking fry, would much rather plum tomatoes than fresh tomatoes, personal preference.
I am currently offendeded
@@aledjango why? For what reason? A british themed place, in england?
I'm more offended you don't know how to spell in correct english.
@sicdoctor I'm not sure if you're being ironic or missed the fact that I, as a completely unoffended person, was being ironic myself 😅
@@aledjango could be both! Who knows!
It's a fantastic Cafe
I do remember Mr Benn that brings back Memories Rob, I really enjoyed myself as did the cameraman on this one, have a great Easter 🐣
amazing venue, and not overpriced.the breakfast was fab.i think cumberland sausages.definately not basic ones.
Thank you Matthew I think you could be right
The owners looked like they have put their heart and soul into the place and the food. As, ever a very good video!
Thank you very much Julie
Great review Gary. My wife & I visit the café frequently.
Chris has poured his heart and soul into this place to create a unique experience.
This is brilliant to hear! Glad you support him.
What a great place, worth a fiver for admission! Good food too, happy days.
Thanks and all the best.
Thank you this is an absolute gem 💎
.....very nostalgic.
No fried bread though.
What a stunning place to eat. Great video again, very entertaining. Thank you. 😎🍻
Have a great Easter Jonathan!
Marvellous place and review Gary. Bring back the good old days, not the wars though. Wonderful abd that food looked the biz!!❤😋☺
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Gaz, you wee face was beaming! You loved that place🥰 awesome work as always, Ben , Perth, West Coast Aus x
I loved it Ben. Hello to Oz!
Couldn't agree more! Thank you
You said you had a smile on your face, and yes you did smile. I however was sitting back with my cuppa beaming like a Cheshire Cat. It’s the first time I ever noticed me doing that. Thanks and well done. 👍
Wow, that's great to hear Philip. Really happy you enjoyed the video over a nice cuppa
Nice one Gary!
Thank you very much Martin
I think that was possibly the nicest looking breakfast I've seen on your reviews. Maybe hash browns aren't traditional in an English breakfast but there was a lot of US military in that area during the war and potatoes and onions weren't rationed so it makes sense that they came into the diet of UK around then. And if people want to be really picky in terms of history..... tomatoes came to us from South America and beans came from North America 😊 that place looks like it's well worth a visit. Thank you
I think the owner is doing a fantastic job bringing back wonderful memories Mary
Lovely place food looked lovely it deserved that score thanks gary for another great review
Very kind Julie thank you
What an interesting place just wonderful. I went back and watched walk through twice. Food looked very good. And as usual. Thank you Gary for taking us with. You. I can t wait till spring comes over here

What a phenomenal looking place. The attention to detail is amazing. I would definitely visit there, or I would certainly, "give it a go ".
Couldn't agree more!
What a fantastic historical food place
It’s brilliant
The big breakfast with tea was great value plus you also get a free visit to a war museum. Great review Gary.
It was absolutely superb
I bet this brings back childhood memories, Gary!!!😁
That was very funny 😂
What a great video and by the looks of the smile on your face you enjoyed your experience from start to finish. As you say these places need to be supported.
Thank you so much Douglas
Thanks!
Sean your very kind and thank very much, thank you have a great Easter 🐣
Another nice one. Love that you are being so detailed and unbiased, Gary
Thank you, I try to be fair. Have a wonderful weekend!
How wonderful . You do such a fabulous mix of venues ….. always thoroughly enjoy every vlog . Not viewed one that I haven’t enjoyed ….. I am constantly recommending your channel!!
Thanks so much Shelagh, have an excellent weekend break
That for me was one of your best vlogs as I’m into food and military history specifically WW2! The owners have done an amazing job not just acquiring period ephemera but providing ample sustenance too…
It reminded me of a museum in Dalbeattie, Dumfries & Galloway but they don’t provide food, another local consortium of volunteers keeping local history alive which I love!
I really appreciate that Bill. I knew quite a few of you would like the setting but I've been stunned by the amazing feedback. The cameraman also enjoys this type of scenery, it was his choice originally. Glad you liked it.
@@GaryEats wonderful content mate!👍
How lucky are you to visit such a lovely place, there's items and furniture in there that I can remember being in my grandma's little council bungalow, I was only 9 when she died in 1969 and I have fond memories of her especially her blonde hair lol, thanks Gary 👍
Thanks so much Jan
WOWWWWWW what a cafe gary. Proper old fashioned and the food looked spectacular. Brilliant video mate 👏

Hello Gary, like the way you are so honest in your reviews - very refreshing. I live in Malta and we could do with a reviewer like you over here.
That is very kind to say and I will pop over and say hello Keith

The breakfast, I would give it a 10 out of 10. Great setting, huge delicious breakfast. I like my bacon overdone as you had it. Brings out extra flavor. Thanks Gary!
This was just brilliant Jeff I loved it
Looked an amazing place - a trip back in time with quality local food. Thanks for going there.
