Alpaca Shearing Days at Dutch Valley Ranch in Colorado

In spring of 2009, Colorado was in the middle of the worst blizzard in 2 years! Still 8 ranches, and our shearer, New Zealands Paul Smith from Kiwi Connections, showed up to our annual shear days. In 1-1/2 days, over 80 alpacas & llamas were shorn on our ranch in Bennett, CO.
We shear the alpaca, trim their nails, and do any necessary dentistry, all in less than 10 minutes per animal. Each is done as quickly as possible to keep stress to a minimum, all while assuring that no harm is done. Shearing not only provides us with a valuable product, but also keeps the alpaca cooler in the summer, making it necessary for a healthy alpaca.
