R3's are very forgiving bikes, which makes it super easy to learn clutch/friction zones. I started on a Grom and it was less forgiving on the clutch. I would stall it so easily. With the R3 I never had issues. It was such a breeze to grasp. I still have my 2020 R3 and love it!
your comment is great to me because my brother literally started on a Grom and now has an R3! Also, you gave me a lot more hope, because I'm learning on the R3 now and was wishing I would've on the Grom because I am short, but I have some hope now lol!

Know it’s 2 year old video but holy!!! He explain the clutch so easy!!! Planning on getting my moto license. I already know I either want an R3 or a Honda Grom. Im looking for something fun nothing fast and those 2 bikes I fell in love with! Thanks for explaining everything!!!
Random, no matter what... I always hold the clutch in when I start a bike. Just in case something is in gear, or you randomly twist the throttle or something, that clutch pulled in will stop all of that in its tracks.
@@Chris-oh4rl Yea. You can. Holding the clutch allows you to switch gears. Holding the clutch also cuts off all power to the gas / throttle. So the clutch is there to assist / help you. You could hold the clutch in, and the bike will go nowhere. It’s “almost” like a brake. So to speak.

Good explanation! I'm looking at potentially getting an R3; never owned a bike before but to have years experience driving manual cars, so those habits could be either good or bad when learning how to shift and drive a bike :)
It's pretty much identical to shifting on a car aside the the neutral gear being in between 1st and 2nd gear. If you have a buddy with a dirt bike or a Grom you can learn how to do it on that first before you learn on a R3
just got a 2018 r3 with full akrapovic exhaust + tune (it sounds incredible, i cant believe its only a 300). im completely new to motorcycles but always wanted one for as long as i can remember, i have 2 manual cars (02 wrx 99 tacoma) so thankfully i have some manual trans experience. 1st practice session tomorrow🙏🏼

Started on the street in 1985, yes, that long ago on the then brandy new Kawasaki 600r Ninja which still resides with me. Just could never part with it. All the years between you name it I rode it. Now I think I want to add one of these to the stable, would definitely be a good choice.
Love it! I think the R3 will be my first bike! Planning on going for the assessment later this week as long as this weather here where I live eases in Australia
yep, great bike to learn on! Thanks to Dillion I settled on buying R3 as my first bike and let me tell you I wouldnt buy anything else as a starter sport bike. It was kind of hard adjusting to R3 after learning on MT-07 as turning on a sport bike is harder than a naked bike but when you get used to it, its a great learners bike. dash has everything you might need, has ABS, really lightweight and short bike. Engine is not that powerful so its good for you to learn on, first and second gear is really short so you have to constantly switch gears when you are commuting, again great for practicing gears. Bike comes alive after 4k rpm, even tho it looks aggressive the bike is really not aggressive. Its a little expensive for a 300cc and its tempting to add a little more money and go for bigger naked bikes but you wont learn to ride comfortable on a higher cc bike as a beginner. I am struggling to go fast because bike doesnt allow you even though I am full throttling it but its a good thing because I get to use the bike to its full potential comfortably knowing it wont launch like a rocket ship and lose control. The more you use it the more comfortable you get, you get used to higher speeds as you get more experience.
Couple things to consider. 400 is faster (more fun) 400 is heavier (less danger in the wind) 400 has positive neutral finder (neutral is 1 click up if you're stationary)
Neutral - check the bike is neutral before starting. Always. Otherwise the bike can just drive off. Often there a Green N light on the dash clocks area. If no light then tap down all the way on the gearshift to get to 1st gear, then a half tap upwards to get into neutral. Hold the clutch lever fully back to the bar, within reason, when changing gear. What is a clutch? The clutch is the divider between the engine and gearbox/rear wheel. It's like 2 CD discs that are hard sprung together, and when you pull the lever it pulls them apart. 1 CD is stuck to the engine, the other CD is attached to the gearbox shaft, which drives the chain to the rear wheel. When you steadily and controllably release the clutch lever the two discs spring together tightly so they move together. Then as you rev the engine it's CD will be pressed tightly to the gearbox CD and it will force the gearbox to spin which will spin the chain to the back wheel. You might have heard of the phrase clutch plates, that's the clutch plates just like dinner plates or CD discs. They are literally a couple of round plates. Hope this helps.
Any chance you could do a video on the gear the beginners should look for when buying a bike? Any recommendations in terms of what we should get first, how to buy it, do we go for the expensive stuff always without even considering its budget counterparts? I was told for example to never buy a helmet without trying it on first since it needs to fit almost perfectly, so pretty much online shopping in this departament is a big no, no. Second-hand helmets are also strongly not recommended, or so I was told. Do I need to get all four pieces of clothing from the start or having say a jacket and gloves will do until I save up more money? Do I go for expensive leather jackets, or those textile ones will suffice for the time being? Thanks man, subscribed today.
Throttle-less starts should only be used to learn where the friction zone of the clutch is, in confined spaces. Once you get the feel for it, give it a little bit of throttle before releasing the clutch. That way you can release the clutch MUCH faster, and avoid being in the way of people behind you. And there is much less chance of stalling the engine. The R3 doesn't have a ton of torque either, so it will stall easier than a bike with a bigger engine. Once you get the hang of the friction zone, start releasing the clutch simultaniously with revving the engine. It quickly becomes pure muscle memory. If you do throttle-less starts at an intersection with people behind you, they *WILL* start honking at you! My experience in the matter comes from riding 250cc bikes, like the single-cyliner Honda CB 250 RS and twin cylinder Suzuki GSX 250 ES. Well, and the Suzuki GSX-R 250, but that one is in a category of it's own. It's a JDM 4-cylinder 249cc with 48 hp and a redline at 17K. It only began pulling cleanly above 6K (5K would fry the spark plugs), and needed 10K to start feeling like a proper motorcycle. And no matter how slow you were going, it would sound like you were speeding. At 80 km/h (50 mph) it would be at 7K in 6th gear. :) And you couldn't adjust the idle by using the rev counter. Idle was 1600, but the counter only began at 3K. XD
Me and my girlfriend were considering getting me a bike and she drive the car we have now since the market is garbage rn, but you just sold me on the idea now lmao
Nice. I think showing people you can take off without gas is important for new riders. Also scenery looks like Montana, I am hesitant about a bike because after snow there is so much sand and dirt leftover...any issues with that?
Not sure if you misworded or if bikes and manual cars are different in shifting technique, but you generally dont “blip” the throttle when shifting up cuz that would mean you are giving revs to shift up. You would normally give revs or blip the throttle to downshift for rev matching?
The letting out the clutch and getting going again after a stop absolutely throws me on my new R3 as a new rider. SO difficult to get right. Stall city.

I had ridden a Hyosung Comet 250R for years, before that a Hyosung Eviv 150, I'm just about about to get a 2022 R3 as I've had a 5 year hiatus from riding. I like the thought behind this video but need to point out counter-steering is not making a sharp turn. It's in the name, when you're going at speed you will naturally look towards, lean and actually turn the handlebars opposite to the way you are turning (i.e. counter-steer) to make those turns. Would be better for new riders if you demonstrated counter-steering on the open road.
Perhaps use a different word that “blip”. In driving stick shift, when you “blip the throttle”, you give a bit of gas, not let off of it. That may be confusing for people that are able to drive manual but not ride a bike.
Yes he is only letting off the throttle in a fast style. Blipping is fast jerky rev first before the fast off motion so that the revs are slightly up when gear engages therefore helping the bike match the downshift to the engine revs. Difficult to explain lol. The R3 has no slip and assist clutch so it would be good to learn this skill for this bike, although it is not essential and you don't need to do this, provided you learn how low the revs must be at before you downshift each gear comfortably for the bike..
question i just got my bike and im ready to ride but wonder what kinda of gas do i use on my 2021 R3? the manual says 87 but some people i asked say premium.
I drive stick and have only owned m/t cars. I understand the concept of riding a m/t but I'm hoping I can translate it to a bike. Lol I have my first class this Sunday.
When your down shifting can you hold down the clutch and keep shifting down gears with out letting go until you get to the desired gear if you have to stop really quickly 🧐🧐🧐🧐

U can only shift a gear at a time
@@jaykay5603 okay thank you
handsome bike, I might skip the r15 for this, how is the tires? in wet roads
How long did it take you to feel like you got the hang of it? I’m on my third short ride with my r3 and it’s kind of discouraging hah. People don’t give a lot of grace for inexperience either!
Seeing how your riding experience is going 5 months in?
Dream bike😍🤟...only one thing should have provide color tft😊
What kind of exhaust do you have? The bike sounds nice.
I just rode my r3 for the first time I went smooth stalled a bit but was able to go didn’t make it out of first gear tho maybe next time
