Literally blown away that Portland, OR was not on this list. When I lived there felt like a homeless city.
I went to Portland in 2020 and there were homeless everywhere in downtown and Chinatown
I was surprised too, because much footage he used in the start in the video WAS PORTLAND. I know those shots like the back of my hand - lived there from 1992 - 2023.
I am from Oregon and a year ago I moved because I couldn’t afford to live there. I lived in Portland for 21 years. I was extremely surprised that Portland Oregon didn’t make the list, you can’t drive anywhere in Portland without seeing homeless.
I think that puts it in a larger perspective that is not a single city issue. It's not like he doesn't know. He lives in a suburb of Portland as do I, so it just shows how big of an issue it has become nationwide
This is total homeless count, of course bigger cities will win out. If he did homeless rate, Portland would probably be up there. Fact is, Portland is not a very big city, so it doesn't draw the massive numbers like LA, San Fran, NY, or Seattle
Unfortunately the worst is yet to come. People are being wiped out, mental health, drugs, bad financial decisions, or unfortunate circumstances.

No need to exaggerate,it's tough enough when you have only one side who is sincerely trying to make changes in the law, and finance for better border security and procedure, while the other side (starts with an R), only wants to use it as a tool for running, but has no intention of fixing it.

Rents are ridiculous even in the Midwest. It is difficult to find rent under $1000 in ‘safer’ areas.

In the PNW its hard to find anything safe under $2000+. Even ghetto areas want more than 2 grand. A studio apartment is $1,000+.

Yes, around me here in Northern Arizona, rents have climbed from $200 a month to $250! And land prices have almost doubled from $500 an acre to about $900 an acre! How can people afford such high prices?
Speaking of the old guys. As a young man I worked for a state Board, one of the members of which was a WW2 and Korea vet who'd gone on to become a millionaire. He was a fervent Catholic. I was privileged to work with this man doing Board business, and walking by our office building he'd always toss a few dollars to the "bums" sitting out front. It really ticked me off. Being the smartest guy alive, I decided one day to explain to him why he was just throwing his money away and doing no good. He turned to me and said, "(my first name), I can afford to be wrong. Can you?" One of the best lessons I ever got.

@@The2ndFirst I used to think that, but he was part of what wised me up. Those guys weren't going to get jobs, pay taxes and become good members of the community, regardless. Most belonged in the institutions we had closed. And I used to lecture folks that most gifts to the homeless will be used to buy dope or booze. That's true, but it doesn't make things measurably worse, and it may occasionally help. My friend also had this bad habit of hiring ex-convicts. Maybe he was just a good judge of people, but those ex-cons would work for him for years without ever causing trouble.
@@bjs301 Hiring an ex con to work for you isn't a bad idea per sey. That's giving them a chance to get a fresh start. Giving money to bums just enables further drug addiction and blight upon society. It literally never helps.
California cities are right up there with São Paulo, Brazil and Cape Town, South Africa in terms of regions I’ve been to where the disparity between have and have nots is truly immense. In LA and SF, you’ll see entertainment celebrities and tech executives living in luxurious homes along the Pacific which is only located a few blocks away from homeless tent cities…wild stuff

@@llc1976many big companies have left San Francisco due to issues like crime, theft, and drop in sales due to lowered foot traffic since the pandemic. The blight of SF has basically affected everyone at this point

Manhattan is NO different! Penn Station, Port Authority, Grand Central, Times Square, Washington Square, Columbus Circle, Bryant Park, Central Park. Battery Park....you name it! They are out in FULL FORCE! Not to mention the "you know who" issue!
I got out before C19 & communism took over, still can’t bring myself to go back for the rest of my stuff.
On the bright side I have the best memories of turning 21 living a block from the beach in the early 90’s, working part time in San Diego when rent was still affordable, life was easy & fun . Now even people with good jobs are living in their cars if they have one.

NYC also has lots of people living in abandoned subway tunnels and such. They're very hidden and hard to count.
Even they need to have some place of abode. Perhaps a tunnel is safer than a side walk-???🤔.
If you ever listen to California Insider, one of the primary reasons nothing ever seems to get done to truly help the homeless is that monies go to specific organizations which are supposed to help these people. However, much of that money ends up paying for extremely high administrative salaries/benefits. As with our federal government, there is absolutely no accountability from so many of these organizations.
In Australia we have 40 billion dollars going missing every year on bureaucrats that do absolutely nothing ,and the people that are looking after are living under bits of corrugated iron
The government and everyone knows that if they build massive cheap, affordable apartments and public housing for the homeless, guess what? Word will quickly get out, they'll be filled and run down, even more people will migrate to Cal, and camp outside. It's a vicious cycle.

I was at the point! I was homeless in California for a couple of months!! I had to work hard and I later got married and got a better job and know I’m living in a house in Indiana.

@@thullraven1 Plus they get some benefits and fun to hang around tourists too, I live in San Diego California, I go to the beach I see a lot of them playing guitar at day, cooking at the back of their trucks,at night they build campfire at the fire pits and sleep around them.
I’ll never forget driving into work one morning and sitting in traffic there was a homeless person asking for money from each awaiting car and when he got to my car I recognized him as my boyfriend from high school. Very sad. We are just one paycheck away from being homeless.
Or one fentynol or meth or heroin hit. It’s a drug addiction problem. Not a paycheck problem. I worked minimum wage jobs for years and never had a problem finding a room to rent within my budget. It’s not hard if you’re not effed up on drugs.

I may have been homeless for only three weeks, but it really puts things in perspective. I've also worked with a lot of homeless in Portland. I'm a security officer at a recuperative care program that has mostly homeless residents.
Why don't homeless people get welfare then they won't be homeless
Welfare doesn't pay for rent, it barely covers the cost of food. Plus every state has its own system for payout. And applications, well most states (all?) require an address. Nice thought, but welfare doesn't work that way. @@donm5717

There is a massive affordable housing shortage on the West Coast in general. That really can't be overstated. Drugs, mental illness, yeah... but a lot of people just can't get a first/last/security deposit together even if they could pass a credit check.

I think it’s disgusting that LA has made prostitution legal. I don’t have an issue with what someone want to do with their body as long as they’re not hurting anyone else. But I don’t see how the law helps the individuals who are prostituting themselves. Charges have never been held against pimps and it hides human trafficking now. The city and state government isn’t looking out for some of its most vulnerable residents.

In Australia, we have an affordable housing problem. Even if you have a decent job, there are towns where in the whole town - not just the city centre - there are no houses with affordable rent.
Unfortunately that un affordable housing is spreading like a California " Wild Fire "🔥. All over this " God Forsaken "planet-!!!😳.
It's fun to go by the shelter numbers, because it makes the situation seem less bleak. About 70% of California's homeless don't have access to, and/or space in, available shelters. So, take those numbers and triple them, then we'll be in the ballpark of reality.

@gittes98I had a job for nearly a year that brought me to Vancouver from NYC, in 2011. I remember from then noticing the drug problem on the streets and some homeless people. I was somewhat astounded by that which is saying a lot having lived in NYC for 30+ years after college. I can imagine that it has gotten quite a bit worse.

We had a family member with schizophrenia. He lived in LAs Skid Row, he wouldn’t accept help. He was crossing the street and killed by a car. Very, very sad place.
When I was 5 years old, I dressed up as a "hobo" for Halloween. I had a big stick with a red handkerchief tied at the end, filled with my worldly goods. Couldn't imagine a kid grabbing a shopping cart and doing that costume these days.
My mom did that one year too!
And I bet you she got tax-free money for that
We dressed in rags and went out as hobos, or in old sheets and called ourselves ghosts. It was a cheap way to have a Halloween costume. We didn't have a lot of money, but we were better off than most working class are now. I'm 70, and it's been a long time since we did that.

I dressed up as a hobo too! Hobos were homeless, but workers, traveling the rails for jobs. If you move around and work just enough to eat (and drink) you are a tramp, if you refuse to work and stay in one area you are a bum. At least that was the terminology 80 or so years ago.
I had no idea I was about to become homeless, until a social worker served me with eviction papers. It was on my 72nd birthday that i became officially homeless, and a worthless bum, according to most here. Due to my COPD taking a dive off the chart I will be traveling to North Platt Nebraska to a VA operated nursing home.Very soon I will be 75 so will have just over 3 years on the street. It is not a bad life if the do gooders and haters would just take a hike.

My friend who has COPD among many health problems just “graduated” from alcohol treatment….they are trying to press him in a nursing home…he lived in my house for almost 5 years…..all he really needed was a stable place to live without fear of eviction…..treatment, incarceration, nursing homes, mental hospitals are all part of the corporate profit capitalist system….buy yourself a boat or trailer to live independently
One of the fastest growing homeless are the senior citizens who can't afford rising rents. Most are living out of their vehicles. I know from whence I speak as I am living out of my van. (I saw what was going to happen and purchased a van. I meet many other seniors in the same situation.

We're in beautiful Honolulu Hawaii. Homelessness here is a problem impossible to ignore. The beautiful parks and beaches are peppered with homeless tents. Some sidewalks have rows and rows of tents reeking of Marijuana. The streets have mentally ill people walking and shouting to themselves walking among the tourists. Not a good image for them to take home.

I live on Maui and since the Lahaina fires and FEMA paying $5k a month for a 2 bedroom has made it impossible for most of us to find a place. My landlord took me to court 3x for bs issues, she lost all 3x but the stress while dealing with Ovarian cancer was too much 4 me. Thanks FEMA, smh

I'm surprised Portland didn't make your list. I do have an interesting stat and semi success story. Here in Medford the homeless rate has actually declined. A lot of the local charities have bought old motels and turned them into small, but liveable units. Plus, the city did enact some strict laws.

Didn’t they just declare an fentanyl crisis? I think he didn’t add them to the list because he always has them on the list so why keep them on a list like this? I moved from there in October and it did’t look like it was improving to me as their only policy it seems is to move them from place to place.

It’s nothing compared to the west. Trust me on that one I’ve been to downtown Kansas City. And I’ve been to all those cities on the list except for Seattle. Kansas City looks like it has none at all compared to those cities.
I’m in San Diego and they’re doing absolutely nothing to help the homeless issue except pushing them away from downtown and beaches. The way they deciding to help the homeless is by raising the cost of living and giving out tents.
In 1985 I was was a guide for a Japanese man who wanted to see America. We saw Portland, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York. The amount of homeless people in San Francisco was shocking to him. In Los Angeles in Little Tokyo around 5pm, an appliance store truck came by and gave away their boxes that held refrigerators and freezers to the homeless. I was a mailman downtown Portland until around 2000. Homeless were there but nowhere like it is today.

Seeing what happened to Denver saddens me greatly. I used to love going to Rockies games, to Elitches, the 16th Street Mall and dozens of other places back in the 90s and 2000s. Marijuana legalization was the beginning of the end for Denver. Not only did it attract a ton of people who couldn't afford to live in the Denver Metro area, but it attracted a ton that could, driving the cost of living up through the roof, which in turn made the homeless situation even worse. Now the city is up there for theft, violent crime, drug use, and countless other social ills that were only moderate issues as recently as the mid 2010s. I refuse to go to Denver (and Aurora) anymore given how terrible they've become. It's truly very sad.

Back in the 1990s there was a significant population of drifters that would go from city to city with the seasons. They would arrive in Austin like migrant birds in October, when the summer heat had faded, and then they would leave for cooler northern climes in May
Cost of apartments and living on the West Coast is insanely high. The most beautiful places and wealthiest have the most homeless people.

We had 1 in Guam in the 70s - Jack. He slept on the bleacher at the Paseo. He was ok.
In the early 70's my economics professor stated, with all sincerity, that the United States had eliminated poverty at its most basic level. Back then, you didn't see or hear of homeless people. In comparison to other parts of the world, the US is not currently experiencing the most dire form of poverty where starvation and disease are a daily deadly threat. Which direction are we going to go? History has not been all that encouraging.
I see 2 main events that caused the homelessness we are experiencing today. 1. The burst of the housing market and banking disaster around 2008, this resulted in over 3.5 million home foreclosures. 2. The rapid off shoring of U.S. manufacturing resulting loss of good paying jobs causing people to have to take lower paying work and loss of health and retirement benefits. Our government never succeeded in helping people keep their homes nor created paths for good paying jobs to return to the U.S.
Lord knows they spent tens of billions of dollars on failed programs.
Thank you so much for bringing light to this issue (those in the biz would say the light has already been there). Anything we can do to highlight the plight of these people is important. The amount of people with mental and developmental needs is horrific in this country. Thank you again for this video!
Mother Teresa's best advice was to start with one person and make them part of something daily. The bay area rescue mission in Hayward CA does a great job of this, right next to Oaktown in Alameda county. Donate to them please, they take people off the street and train them to take people off the streets. It is a faith based"Fishers of men" type of organization with low operating costs, right in the thick of things. Since no govt is involved they get results I've seen amazing turn arounds that would make you cry a tear of joy. Thanks Mr. BRIGGS
Mother Teresa withheld pain meds from dying people believing they should suffer for their sins before they died. there are many reprehensible stories about abusive "Mother Teresa". No real angel.
We are dealing with the homeless problem like we deal with many other social issues. We pretend there's one cause and one answer. Then, we forcefully apply that answer and wonder why it's not solving the problem. Addiction is one cause. Mental Illness is another (remember the GOP dismantled most of the mental health infrastructure back in the Reagan era). And, we have a profound lack of affordable housing. We can hand out tents and blankets forever, and it will fail to solve homelessness. It would be cheaper to offer free addiction treatment and free mental health care. As for affordable housing, that is both a supply issue and a living wage issue. We continue to pay CEOs ridiculous sums, while failing to pay those down the chain enough money to pay for food and rent. Pay full time working people enough money to afford housing.

Thank you for this Briggs. I too grew up in a SoCal beach community so I always was aware of homelessness, which in a way prepared me for moving to NYC. I just wanted to point out that the homeless in NYC are not "invisible" as you say. NYC is a very public place, a mixing of all social levels on the sidewalk and subway. Its a lot different than seeing a tent as you drive by in your car. These people are seen, and there are TONS of incredibly caring people living here to help them, but at a certain point that doesn't even seem to matter, a lot of the homeless just feel stubbornly hopeless. I don't know of any practical solutions.

In the U.S., most housing is private and built for profit, so there is no way to dictate lower prices. Supply and demand set the price in a capitalistic society. If wages are forced higher, that will just give people more money to bid up the housing prices even higher. Many of the cities on the list are hemmed in by geography and cannot easily expand. Even in areas with room like Sacramento, building costs are high, so private developers are not going to build houses and then sell them for less than it costs to construct them. Building more housing where land and labor is cheap will only attract the retired and the telecommuters, but even they won't want to move to a place where they don't have nearby family or familiar activities. Briggs has other videos on where cheap housing is available, but most of the towns have little to offer and most people don't want to live in them, which is why they are shrinking in population and old houses are available for very little money, there just aren't any jobs.
But if they aren't working, and are on welfare, why not start them put filling up empty houses in towns like Cairo at the Illinois border. The as they become more skilled through GED programs, language skills, other job training they can move to job locations. It's going to take many of these people a long time to become accustomed to life under a roof, cooking for themselves etc. And there are so many vacant towns. Perhaps jobs like gas stations, lawn care, eldersupport are available, or maybe then they get moved for a job. Every illegal piled into NYC won't find a job there. So spread them out to where there is work in agriculture etc.

Thank you. I'm homeless in NYC. It's difficult to find work nowadays, especially lacking ID, good clothes, cell phone... whatever happened to just showing up & getting hired on low-level jobs? Anyway in NYC need to get in programs to afford housing in NYC if earning under $100k.
I left Denver. Los Angeles and New York City because I was able to. The cost of living, especially housing, has increased exponentially. The pay has not kept up with it. Are people homeless because they’re drug addicted and suffering from mental health or are they suffering from those problems because they’re homeless?

Just working full time and make ok money, and barely making it, especially as an older single person. Everything is so damn expensive.
Counting homeless living in shelters is
a fraction of the homeless population. In my estimation it's at least 4 to 5 times higher than these estimates. How would I know ? I was out there.

I was in your shoes six months ago; scared about living on the streets with zero experience and I prayed like I’ve never prayed before. A friend of a friend said I could stay in his spare room and did and applied for my social security. I now receive ssn and it’s a good amount but not enough to pay rent anywhere these days. I am praying my friend doesn’t kick me out and that I will be provided another way out of this mess. I’ll pray for you too.

Hey Jimmy great video! I went to phoenix 2x this last year and was shocked by two things, how massive and spread out the city really is and unfortunately it’s homeless. It was aweful. I loved the city and people but was disappointed.
I was just down there myself to see my Dad and I agree. After I got my rental car I stopped by a convenience store near Sky Harbor airport and they were just wandering around like zombies. The crazy thing with Phoenix is I wonder if Jimmy just took the statistics of Phoenix itself (which isn't that big) or the suburbs that are considered to be Phoenix like Glendale, Scottsdale, Mesa, Peoria and such
I'm surprised the following cities aren't on the list
1. Chicago
2. Miami
3. las vegas
4. any city in Texas
The Chicago area is not hemmed in like most of the cities in the video, it sprawls in every direction (except east, Lake Michigan.) As a result, middle class people have moved further out of the city with each generation, leaving old but affordable housing behind.
Those places aren’t nearly as bad with the homeless compared to the ones on this list. Every major city unfortunately has a homeless population, just not as prevalent. As for Chicago, there strangely isn’t as many from my experience compared to what I see in other big cities. They have their fair share don’t get me wrong, I just don’t see the problem as bad there for being such a large city. If anything, I saw it worse in Houston. Then again, it could be because Chicago just gets too cold in the winter to be homeless in

Great vid Briggs! What does Portland's homeless statistics look like? When you and I worked together at Comcast in 2017 or so I used to commute from downtown and it's nothing like it is today. Being born and raised here it sucks that the city has become a punchline of sorts but seemingly it's an entire West Coast issue. Your Amtrak video shows that in a stark fashion. I know people are going to commenting about politics being the cause, but I live in Bakersfield, which is far from being a liberal city, and we have a serious homeless problem. Fresno is the same way, too. One thing I noticed (besides all these places listed are really expensive places to live) is that these cities and states have a laissez-faire attitude toward drug use, including legal weed. Is that acting as a magnet for the homeless to go to these cities?
Absolutely. And cities that are soft on crime and give out lots of handouts. If i was a homeless drug addict I'd preferably want to live somewhere that wasn't going to lock me up for shooting up in public or take a dump on the sidewalk and somewhere that theft isn't prosecuted. Nice weather helps too.
The moment Vancouver decriminalized all drugs and created "safe supply" literally meant that people can shoot up on the street without any consequence... The number homeless and drug addicted has boomed in that time, not improved.
Homelessness is a First World social ills. In poor countries, everybody is fighting for survival. No charities, no pity, no drama, It's sink or swim, children and adults alike. This c8rcumstances builds character, determination and community spirit.
First World homeless people is nothing compared to what we and and others still enduring.
I think that the homeless per capita would be the most reliable way to determine the homelessness and perhaps the poverty rate per capita.
He gave us that number, didn't he? (Most in this list were about 1%. HUD estimates nationwide it's 0.18%; the homeless form communities in the big cities.)

I live in Long Beach, California and it is rife with homelessness here. Also, great numbers of people are sleeping in their cars and vans. I bet metrpolitan LA (18.8 million) has an area wide unhoused population of nearly half a million, an it gets worse here every month. I am lucky, I bought a tiny apartment in the 90s', and do not have the vicissitudes of $300/mo. rent increases to drive me out like the poor renters do.

The Phoenix area does seem to be overrun with homeless. This isn't just the downtown area it's spread out all over central and South Phoenix. Even the suburbs Mesa and Tempe have a noticeable homeless population.

In my neighborhood in Shoreview, San Mateo, CA, we had Buckethead, and Mae West. He wore an actual bucket on his head and we weren't sure where he slept and he kind of scared us. Mae slept in her Cadillac, and seemed to always be at the ARCO gas station. She had long blonde hair, course, styled just like Ms West's, and her slip on elastic waist white polyester pants were always inside out.Oh and she wore Candie's. This was 70s. So yah, same, the neighborhood fixtures. Gone are those days.
We had Harriet and Harold in the pike place market where I worked i the 70’s….in the 90’s we had a guy dragging a huge wooden cross down university way…Symptomatic Nerve Gas and Body Bag Man, a Vietnam vet.
I Used to donate to people who had cups asking for help and were selling newspapers, and/or flowers, but I refuse to do that anymore. It's not that I don't care, far from it. It's that around here you can't tell the difference between homeless and groups pretending to be homeless. There is a lot of money to be made panhandling and when you see all the street corners occupied by all appearances homeless only for it to turn out to be an organized ring of something, you give up on individual donations. It's sad I know, especially with how close we come to the homeless lately, but you can't trust your charity will reach the right people anymore.

My aunt, a former NYC resident, used to give money to panhandlers. She stopped doing this when she saw one of these panhandlers playing the slot machines in Atlantic City.

I don't know why they don't build massive rehab centres. Like prison, but for rehabilitation from drugs, and re-establishment into society.
There are so many homeless people in the United States and many lying saying there are jobs. There aren't enough jobs. There's jobs but not enough for everyone. Many homeless people are employed but they aren't earning enough money to support a lifestyle outside of being homeless. Many are sick or on drugs or homeless with children. Its really a sad situation and I somehow think this going to get much worse before it gets better. Much worse
Great story. Thank you. I came close to being one of the stats a few times. I made it thru and now comfortably retired. Thank God, and I do. My oldest son lives in an RV which became too old. I bought him a newer one. It's too bad that the solution for all the homeless isn't easier. You're right, there are people that just need a hand up and maybe they're family?

I can remember my mother way back in the late 1960's warning me that some day here in North America it is going to take more than one generation to pay off the mortgage for any house. Looks like her prediction is turning out right. Couldn't there have been some things done to avoid that sort of thing starting to happen here? While at first most people in the older generation are in denial about it enabling a homeless crisis?
Portland, and Eugene, Oregon have way to many homeless people. What is sad.... Is people that have served in the Military and do become or have become 'homeless'. My son has served 12 years in the Army and still lives with his children in his Inlaws's house.🤨😔
I grew up in the LA area, moved to the Denver area for about 5 years, then to the Phoenix area for about 18 years, then to the Seattle area for about 18 years. In that order. The Seattle area homeless problem is really bad, really really bad. And yet I miss that area the most, it is a magic place. I've lived in a very small town in the middle of nowhere Utah for the last 4 years. I've grown to appreciate what it doesn't have as much as I miss the things I loved about Seattle. If I could afford it I'd go back. But I made the mistake of selling my beautiful home in the Seattle area and moving to low cost little town Utah. A mistake not because there is anything wrong with Utah, but because I didn't realize I had it so good in the Seattle area.
There are now a lot of UA-cam videos out on living in your car car and urban and stealth camping. As you mentioned mental health and drugs are a contributor to the problem. Also many become comfortable with their homelessness and prefer to live in the streets rather than live with a roof over their head.
Price fixing of residential rentals is the problem. A national morarorium on rent increases for all investor group - owned rentals is needed at this time to curb the increase in homelessness.
Like someone famous once said: "The problem with Capitalism is that eventually the middle class runs out of money." I think this is what that looks like. My folks lived through the Depression. Mom's family lost the farm. Dad's family lost the ranch. Mom lived in a Corps of Engineers tent city for her teen years in the Dust Bowl. Maybe things haven't really changed all that much.
Perhaps you are thinking about Margaret Thatcher's quote? "The trouble with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."
Long story short.: Middle class is shrinking. Especially in California and Hawaii

We've got so many homeless people in Fresno California, I find it heartbreaking. It's a lot of different reasons behind that.

They claimed they were remodeling, was the reason. I guess painting bathtubs and putting cheap laminate is remodeling?

People watching this need to keep in mind this is doesnt include people living in rvs,boats,cars,vans etc,i lived on a boat in wilmington north of long beach ca,i was lucky enough to be on the regular docks with electric,water etc,theyre were people there that lived on the floating docks that was on the water away from my docks,keep in mind they have no water, electricity,its like water world,they have to take a small boat(a dinghy)back and forth from their boat to the marina,it was tough enough to live on the boat with the amenities like i had,let alone out there on the floating docks,the people that run these charities dont want the homeless problem to ever go away,why would they?they draw salaries and make money off the problem
