50 years later.... nothing looks better. Automotive perfection.
MrPete8680
I think the 2000s vintage Ford GT looks better than the GT40. The current prototype is even better. I'm not a big fan of 6 cylinder twin-turbo/electric cars. Too much shit to worry about breaking -- which makes me wonder how they'll do on their first visit to Lemans. The Ford Ecoboost from the United sports car championship series has a similar engine minus the electric motor (I think). Seems like they've gone through a lot of teething pains. Anyway, it's cool to see Ford moving ahead with newer technology. Still, I'm a keep it simple, stupid kinda guy. A nice supercharged V8 is just fine for me. :-)
tscooter22 Ha ha. The 2000's Ford GT is the GT40's son. Id rather have the "mom" then the "son" ;) After 50 plus years she still looks good! Even though I believe in the long run technology is good 4 cars, I'd just wood love to have this 100% computer free car!
Oh, yeah, I'd want the older one if at all possible, mainly because it's an extremely rare beast. It wouldn't be a car you take out for backroad bashing on a regular basis. This is where the Ford GT comes in. :-) Again, I still like the looks of the Ford GT over the GT40, but not by much.
+MrPete8680 I'm taller than Gurney, so I'd have to go with the new version.
2000 ford gt is completely different than the GT40, GT40 is on whole different level
In 1964, at Nürburgring, I was 18 years old, and my father had taken our family to see the American Cobras take on the Ferrari 250 GTOs. Well, before the race, I was able to walk into the paddock area and saw this cars' predecessor, the Lola, in a garage and was able to look inside and I thought it was the most beautiful racing car I had ever seen! That Lola never ran in that race, which was a disappointment, but the Ford GT40s later rectified that situation! These are memories I will never forget!
@David Berry - The Ford GT turned into what the Lola might have been, but was never developed enough. Lola has the dubious distinction of having the most entries at Le Mans without either a win or even a podium finish! My favorite looking Lola was the T70, very contemporary looking!
thanks for sharing
This car will worth more after Ford v Ferrari movie come out
Yea
Nah
You know it’s just a movie right
it’ll at least be known by a wider audience
Movie should have been called Shelby vs Ford
This belongs in a museum. Not in a hidden garage.
Dana H I told my dentist the same thing with his. Since he has no kids and knows I'm a car nut I get to remove his cars from the house if something happens to him. He is getting old sadly. He knows I want his gt40 in a museum. His GT not so much.
Dana H it belongs on a race track not a museum
Thanks Indiana Jones...

@Corby Dinsburger But he's right, it looked way more modern akin to what's around today. In fact, the GT40 is probably the LAST Le Mans winner that looked like a normal car (perhaps the McLaren F1)

"Car guy" is the weakest term in the automotive history, honestly really cringey anytime I hear some ford focus master or honda civic master driving the car there gf bought and then outta no where "yeah im more of a car guy" yeah stfu no you are not
@@OdysseyWafflez Wow, gate-keeping an open enthusiast community? A "Car guy" is not somebody who owns a 10 million dollar hypercar or some shit. A "Car guy" is somebody who finds cars to be more than just a "point A - to - point B" commuter vehicle. They are a person dedicated to putting time and effort into their car (although not too much, just forget about the bug splatters you get on track day until the end of the week), and they don't have a blind hatred in a specific car. They don't think that a car is an inanimate object, they feel a connection to it, even if it is some shitbox Chevy Cobalt SS. Even if your car is bone-stock, even if you are too broke to afford something nicer than a Focus ST, you can be a car guy if you are WILLING to go under your car.

If GT-40 P-1075 ever goes to auction, you'll see $15 mil easy. Same car in Gulf-Weyer colors won LeMans in 1968-69.
agreed! also the first le mans Jacky Ickx had won in 1969 where he literally was seconds ahead of the Porsche 908 and at the start of the race he walked across the track and put his seat belt on. LEGENDARY
Gromit801 I wonder how much my dentists gt40 is worth? Yes it's real too as he also has a real Shelby Mustang too. The way that car sounds running. Mmmmm
Gromit801 might want to bump that up a bit more. Considering the first built Cobra has sold for 22 mil. And Daytona Cobra Coupes is estimated 25mil. + (chassis CSX2287) P1075 should be about 25-28 mil.
Joe Neufeldt and the lead changed hands twice on the last lap.

3:24 sounds like country singer singing his song to fast😂😂
Saw this car race at Sebring 1965
there were two entered at the 1965 Sebring event. one was driven by Phil Hill and Richie Ginther, while the other was driven by Bruce Mc Laren and Ken Miles. At full song they sounded more like a Ferrari than a 289CI ford push rod motor. Very fast, very beautiful for a car at that time, extremely eye pleasing to watch. The Hill/Ginther car was extremely fast and It may have won but it's rear suspension broke away from the hub, ending it's day. The remaining car ran well but wound up two laps off the pace of the winning Jim hall Chaparral car. Of course the following year, the new 427's emerged setting all kinds of speed records.. they were in a speed class by themselves, unmatched by anything ever seen. The 1965's happened to be the most striking out of all the subsequent ford GT's. the date above is wrong, it was 65 not 64. In 64, this car hadn't been built yet. I was there, I know.

Good price for a fantastic British design
I was there witnessing this happen; yes it was special. Unfortunately this video does not include footage of the car with the engine running - they mostly just blipped the throttle while not in gear, very gently engaging a tiny bit of clutch to move forward slowly, then shut it down as it rolled onto the red carpet. My son and I were standing immediately next to the black pad for photos that cars roll onto as bidding approaches closed. My son was a little young to understand the significance of the car at the time and really did not have any interest, but now he really appreciates that experience.
@David Shoemaker - Great story, thanks!

Amazing the credit Ford gets for just writing the checks and making the whole process of building the car harder!!!
Not a lot of non Ford aficionados know this, but the 289 powered GT40's never won at Le Mans...the 427 won in '66 and '67 and then a 4 bolt main version of the new 302 with Gurney-Weslake heads won in '68 and '69...the '69 win was unexpected as Porsche was fielding the brand new and much more advanced 917 that year but they all DNF due to mechanical issues.
almost like its a endurance race wow who would of known
God, I wish I was alive and at Le Mans in 1969 to watch the last few hours of that historical battle between the Porsche 908 and Ford GT40 when it was realized their race for 2nd became the race for 1st.
@Steve Fowler - Ya, who would have ever thought a Ford would outlast a Porsche in a race??? Hahaha!
Also wasn't the 69 car also the 68 winner? So technically the Ford was 2 years older than the 917k.
I'm happy this car sold! The GT is Ford's soul and the DNA of their racing heritage. This prototype was how Ford won LeMans in 1966!

The Lola Mark VI GT is the foundation of the Ford GT. I remember seeing a picture of the Lola when I was a kid, and,it was a cool race car. I didn't know that most of it's design was father to Ford's Legend of a race car. GT 40 1st generation.
If you look up pictures of the Lola you can really see the resemblance.
Go to jay Leno garage. He has a great video on Lola.
Similar but the GT40 was designed by Roy Lunn in Dearborn. Saying Broadley's Lola GT was the father to the GT40 is akin to saying Enzo Ferrari designed the Cobra Daytona cause it's similar to the Ferrari 250 GTO. sheez this BS is never gonna end.

It doesn't belongs in a garage or a museum. Machines of life's passion are meant to thrive on a track!
Thats not accurate, The car was designed and Built by Eric Broady, it was based on the Lola MK6 GT (hence its very short development time). The only one built in the US and tuned by Shelby was the 427 car mk5 (the cars that won 66/67) but the Jhon Wyre race team took over the mk1 cars and after changing the suspension Geo from the CAD setup won Lemans 68-69 with the 302 powered cars. The Ferrari - Ford Rivalry was almost Funny, Enzo Ferrari knew Eric Broady of Lola had built the car because Ford also approached Lotus but they wanted to call the car the Lotus-Ford and we all know that wasn't going to happen so as Lola where already building Indy 500 chassis for Ford they where brought in to build the GT40.
The 64' version was a European based car, dissimilar to the 65. The 64's were physically very different while running the Indy engine opposed to the 289ci. The whole failed project was kicked over to Shelby who retooled every component to what is seen above. For Le mans in 65', the 289 was swapped out for a Holman Moody 427 Nascar motor tuned down to last twenty-four hours. it was determined in April trials at the Sarth circuit, the 289 lacked top end along the long Mulsanne straight. The original Eric Broadly design was the forerunner but required a functioning aero design which it lacked, a suspension and braking system and of course a more adaptable drive train. Without Shelby's brilliant input, the Broadly car would have no more than a historical footnote.
Yeah tuned huh shelby droped the 427 made it lighter made it safer cant forget safer
K2edg.. Wrong!!! After the 1964 Le mans race all three cars after a poor performance were shipped to Shelby in California. it was there the modifications were performed in aerodynamics, braking, suspension and the motor converted to a cobra 289 with the snake exhaust system, new larger cooling system, oil cooler. The wheels were converted to Halibrand, the wheel wells widened for larger tires. This new version was run at Daytona and Sebring, but during the April tests at Lemans, they realized the 289 was insufficient for the long straights. it was at this time that the predecessor to the mark -2 was developed using a Holman Moody 427 detuned version to last 24 hours. the body again was modified for the new power plant. the car generated tremendous speed but the trans failed in all three entrants. The rest of the story you know.
Mark 2's were run in 66' while the mark 4's were run in 67' They were prepared and entered by Shelby of California and Holman Moody of Charlotte NC. for both years. Very possibly the chassis were made in Europe( I'm not sure) but the drive train and final assembly were completed in the US and campaigned from the US
Thanks for the history lesson.
