Can A Rotten Tree Stump Become Something Beautiful?

- 4 years ago my wife and I removed a tree from our backyard that was damaging a wall. Now after 4 years of rot and decay, I want to try and turn the stump into something beautiful and functional.

I am a beginner to woodwork, the main test I have with this bundle ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz is that I think that its hard to settle on a choice of the plan and outline to use as there are a large portion of them there. Nonetheless, I like the simple stride to step directions laid out there.
I love the look of the roots up. The glass lets you see so much more than if they were facing down.
That’s gorgeous Jean. I would say root up looks better and seems to cradle the glass top in a more natural way. Also it will be much easier to attach a more chunky base (possibly even something like a sleeper wood plinth) than it will be to try and stabilise the glass top elegantly. Nice job mate. And I love that laser level.
👍 Agreed.
I agree that root up looks better, and you could use wood instead of metal to stabilize the bottom.
Lovely work on the stump. Roots definitely UP! Jane ❤
Love it. I was dubious when you were lopping off big portions of root, but it looks awesome in the end.
It's obviously roots up, and maybe just one chunk of steel sticking out of the base.
It's beautiful either way. I prefer the roots down configuration. The laser level was a great asset to this build. Well done.
From a fellow Western Capie, you have a fantastic channel. Came across you a few weeks ago when I watched your pedestal drill restoration, and I simply had to start your series from the beginning. Keep it up. From me roots up, but I suppose with a little one that will start crawling and standing up against everything in a few months it really doesn't matter 😉
Roots down shows off the root structure and is more in its traditional state when it was a growing tree. Looks great what you’ve done so far.
Watched this with equal parts 'he's going to need... oh already thought of it' and 'genius' another great project. Roots up for me.
Wow looks great! I think I like roots up. Its more visually interesting. I think a cross out of wood running through the trunk part would look great
Looks good. Roots down ⬇️ looks far better and natural too.
Great job! That wood looks gorgeous with the finish. Roots up is the way to go! Cheers from Belgium!!!
One more vote for roots at the top. It’s as if the stump is blooming from the floor! Great project!
Great and unexpected results! 😃Congrats for that job 👌 I think that "roots up" looks better ....you can always say this is how trees grow in the Northern Hemisphere 😉
Roots up for sure. Looks like a treetop instead of a stump which makes me happier 😂
For support, roots up. Use a forstner bit to "inlay" some clear rubber in four spots for the glass to rest on.
Looks great!!
Absolutely beautiful job!!
Definitely roots up! Looks much better that way.
I love how you turned that into something that looks so good, I favour the roots on top. To compensate for the smaller footprint you could hollow out the bottom and pour concrete into the hollow and let it set. And don't forget that new bundle of joy will be toddling about and having 4 kids that have successfully reached adulthood I've seen just how...... "interesting" it is to watch them lol.
Roots at the top.
Love the build and the channel 👍
Roots at the top. Beautiful
Totally gorgeous. I have a large red cedar stump, now I know what to do with it. Thank you so much. The timing of this video is great! Roots up
I think the roots up has a more dramatic look and you get to see all the details you carved into the piece as well as all the natural elements of the stump. It also creates a more airy feel due to the negative space created by the roots being up and allows more foot room when sitting close to the table.
I like the roots up look. Like you said, will also provide more support to the glass.
Excited for more videos sir!
Roots down! 🌳
Roots up looks great to me. Also it would give you more foot room under the table. Love your work!
I didn’t think it was going to look any good but after you chopped and chiseled you really worked your magic on it and now it’s a piece of art and with the roots facing up it does show it’s beauty so I’d say roots facing up
Roots at the top. Great piece, well done 👍🏻
Roots pointing up, Makes the piece look so much better in my opinion. Like a hand holding something up. Gives it more gravitas. Great work there my friend.
Great to see you back, definitely roots down for me 😁 👍
Beautiful work. Definitely roots at the top. Thanks for the hard work and videos.
Roots up looks the best. Keep it going with the good stuff.
That turned out very nicely!! I think I prefer it roots up ⬆️
Roots at the top, , more sturdier wenn kids are around👍🏻 looks super cool what ever you choose
Roots up! Beautiful piece. Good job.
really like the look of the roots at the top
Incredibility awesome from a talented young man. Thank you kind Sir.
I like it roots up. And I think you did a wonderful job.
Roots at the bottom. Great results
Roots up has more character to show off. And the narrow bottom would be simple to stabilize. Great job with this build!
Love it , this what I like about you turning something into something you can use. I like the roots up .😊
Roots at the top for me, without the glass. I think it would make a really original coffee table, just pop your cup on the end of a root. Great job👍🏽
Roots up! But I have no idea how to attach or stabilize the glass top....great video, glad to hear you'll have more videos coming out and congrats on the baby!
Great work! Looks amazing. I would say for me it's roots up 💯 all the way. It makes it look fancy, classy, rich and elegant. Just my opinion. Lol
I think roots up is much more interesting. Great work!
Awesome project. I vote for roots at the top and glass will be more stable.
I love the... "I just built a router frame to mill the top of the stump". I'm no woodworker (but love these videos), but I'd spend several days building that frame (and it wouldn't be level) and you just make it appear!!! Keep up the great content please, even if I can't aspire to it personally!
I had no idea how you would cut remotely flat surfaces -- the laser level made your chainsaw cuts really good, and the router sled? Wow, that was a beautiful solution.
Roots up!! Looks great!
I like roots up the best. It looks great either way.
Stumps have so much potential, cant wait to see what you did with it.
Roots up. Project looks awesome!
Roots up looks better to me. Either way, it's an amazing project and looks awesome!
Looks great either way! Tough choice mate.
Roots up looks much better nice job 👍
Nice work. My vote is roots up.
Not gonna lie, at the start I was unsure how well this would turn out, but man you nailed it!
I like the roots up direction. I think you can see more of the shape that way and I agree the large metal frame needed for the roots down direction would distract from the rest of the table.
Maybe you can make the base with curvy pieces of metal to try and replicate the look of branches. That would help it blend in a bit and look less out of place.
Roots at the top for sure.
At first I thought you would put the roots at the bottom, but when I saw it with the roots at the top I think it's actually better. Looks great either way though, well done :)
Beautiful work as usual. Roots up.
Roots up! Great job!
Very nice project. There's only one person who's going to tell you how it should sit and you probably know she's always right or best to let her think she is (that's what I do for an easy life). Please keep up your interesting content as I look forward to your postings.
Roots at the bottom for sure. Either way it turned out great!
Roots up because it looks nice and you won't stub your toes!
Roots at the top!
Absolutely,👌👌 you gave life to the cottonwood root 🙏thank you
You're stuck with a choice of preference. Both ways look good.
Roots up looks more abstract. Roots down more natural. I’m partial to roots down but either way it’s fabulous.
roots at top for sure
Fantastic work, Jean! 😃
I would leave it like that! This way you can use it both ways!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Love it! I like it as a stand alone sculpture
This is a wonderful piece, and I am on team roots up. I think it displays their complexity more
Roots up. Love the show,
I like the root system on the floor.
Great piece. Roots up.
So you got rid of the Bad wood to see the Good wood 😜
Love the finished product.
Up or down it looks good.
I'm part of roots up. Show off all the time spent carving and adding detail.
gorgeous. Roots up
Even though I love it, both ways, I would leave the roots up. Either way great job.
I like the roots down. It makes it look like the tree is growing out of your floor. That being said, I think that if you wanted to continue with the theme of a tree growing out of the floor, it would be better to not do a glass top, but to do a nice wood top. That would allow you to support it without the supports being seen through glass.
Finally a new VIDEO !!!!
Root at the top, then hollow out the bottom 2 inches and fill it full of lead. If its already fairly stable, the extreme lowered center of gravity will make it rock solid
Exactly what I was thinking
Roots @ the top!!!
like always , great job, love all your work.
roots up, no doubt, keep up the good work.
Well done. The stump table looks really good. For me, roots up has a very attractive look to it. A discreet metal cross (or something similar) at floor level will be less obvious.
I look forward to whichever option you choose.
I'm also looking forward to the compressor restoration.
Beautiful
Roots up with the glass. Roots down as a chair, or with a semi transparent purple/green resin top (sunburst finish).
My vote is for Roots up .
That quick and crude router sled is impressive!
Good job
Roots at the top!
That's an amazing restoration of what would have been firewood. Thanks for the video!
Roots up, I think it gives the appearance of a hand holding the glass. It’s your coffee table guess at the of day what does mrs woodshop junkies think
Looks great. I would say root up looks best of the 2 options. OR . . . . tint the grass a green colour and have it root down?!
Roots up is my vote. I also think some type of wood base would look better than metal.
I would never had the balls to start chopping pieces off with a chisel and be that aggressive with the angle grinder but damn! That turned out amazing. I would say roots down looks more natural so I'd place it that way. Either way it looks really good though.
Bottoms up!
Thanks for sharing this with us, Jean. @7:33, isn't it all dead wood? 😉
Roots at top.
