NYFF58 Revivals highlight Smooth Talk (1985) features the work of three powerhouse women: director Joyce Chopra; actress Laura Dern, in one of her first starring roles; and author Joyce Carol Oates, whose 1966 short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” provided the inspiration for the film. To celebrate the festival premiere of the film’s new restoration, Chopra, Dern, and Oates joined TCM host Alicia Malone for a talk full of insights into the making of this landmark film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1986 Sundance Film Festival. They discussed the real-life inspirations behind Oates's menacing story and the process of adapting it to the screen; how Laura Dern came to be cast in the movie at just 15 years of age and offered a stunning, precocious performance; and the continued relevance of the film's subject matter-a young woman’s early encounter with the powers and perils of her sexuality.
This free talk was presented by HBO and sponsored by TCM.
In her first lead role, 18-year-old Laura Dern gave one of her most stirring, layered performances in an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’s 1966 short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” She stars as Connie Wyatt, a teenager who spends her summer days moping around the house and exploring her sexuality in the Northern California suburbs. But the thrills and innocence of youth are forever shaded by the predatory behavior of an older man named Arnold Friend (Treat Williams) whom she encounters at a drive-in. Smooth Talk won the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize in 1986 and remains a carefully observed, shockingly powerful story of manipulation and deviance. A Janus Films release. New 4K restoration undertaken by the Criterion Collection.
Presented by Film at Lincoln Center, the 58th New York Film Festival highlights the best in world cinema from September 17-October 11. This year’s festival features drive-in screenings in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens and virtual screenings available nationwide. Get tickets and see more information: www.filmlinc.o...

After teaching the story and film for over a decade, this is a refreshing view by Oates and Dern! Thanks.

I have daughters and I cannot imagine any mother telling her daughter that line about the trashy daydreams. That was horrible. And it was almost like her own mother was jealous of her daughter’s youth and beauty. No mother should ever be jealous of her babies, that’s sick in my opinion.

I like the film but a literary masterpiece... not so much.

Why does Laura Dern keep saying she was 15 when she did this movie but yet the description says she was 18 when she made the movie?

Dern was born in 1967. She would have been 17-18 when it was released, but likely was 15-16 when it was filmed, then...I think. :)
