You have climbed the Mount Everest of timing jobs, done what few dared, done what many say is impossible. Kudos to you. You give us 4.2 owners hope. Lol
@@elmayimbe_the_amateur_mechanic For sure and as much as I don't like how the engine is in front of the axle and the bay is cramped, atleast with a few hours work you can take the front clip off so you have great access to the entire front of the engine. This, meanwhile, is an absolute disaster
As someone who has driven 4 cylinder (many with turbo) VW and Audi vehicles his entire life (37 years old), I recently bought a manual Imola Yellow B7 S4 with a very minimalist exhaust. I am absolutely IN LOVE with the sound of the 4.2. It never gets old. Bad day at work? Bury the loud pedal. Frustrated with traffic? Loud pedal. Wide open road in front of you with nobody for miles? LOUD PEDAL!! It drones a bit on the highway, and I plan to eventually do something about that, but very little compares to the noises it makes. Everyone I know that understands cars points out just how unbelievably angry it sounds when I stand on it. It is now a forever car, and it will always have a 4.2 as long as I'm alive.
Don’t take this as an insult. It’s not. I really like how awkward and boring your commentary is. “Deadpan”, if that’s the right word. It just feels so real. I would never subject myself to German car ownership, but I really do enjoy these rebuild and restore videos of all of the problem children that Audi BMW and Mercedes are known for. As soon as you pull those long tube headers into frame I started clapping. I cannot wait to hear how good this thing sounds on the track. I remember the first time I heard that glorious 4.2 on the highway one late night driving home from work. It made sense why people deal with all of the headaches involved
35:50 HELL YEAH moment. Man I'm amazed how much you compressed months of struggle and pain into less than an hour of Deutsche angewandte Ingenieurwissenschaften pure enjoyment.

Chris - First off, INCREDIBLE video sir! You do a fantastic job weaving in a story within each of your videos! I planned to only watch half of the video and ended up watching the whole thing in one sitting! This video is a treat for all B6 fans out there (not much new content out there for us)! I still have my B6 A4 1.8T USP and these videos still make me excited about my own car 15+ years later of ownership (bought it used in 2009). B6 Thoughts - Huge props to you for doing the whole swap in your own garage and it looks like mostly on your own in your free time! The B6 S4 sounds incredible and I am sure coming from your B6 3.0 there are a bunch of 'quality of life' improvements you notice and appreciate (Recaro Seats, Black Headliner, White S4 Gauges, etc.) that are a side benefit of upgrading to the S4 as well! Thanks again for the awesome content Chris, please keep the videos coming! Congratulations on the huge accomplishment of getting your new "daily driver" S4 running! --Asif

This was brilliant, you did a fantastic job. Learning stuff on the go we’ve all tried it, but hell what a lot of work. Congratulations on making a great car 👏👏👏
This was a really refreshing video to watch. I know all about Audi nightmares, but this was also a great video to watch because it was different than the plethora other channels that have 4 lifts a 30 man team and 8 camera guys. 😂 Great job!
What a great video! Thanks for taking the time to document your Audi adventures. You make it look like most of us who are close to taking the risk...should just go for it.
I did the chains on my B6 S4 and drove it for a few years before selling it to a coworker after i bought a 2021 S4 and while I don't regret it, i do miss that sound. I made the exhaust myself by using stock cats > deleted secondary cats > x-pipe > into magnaflow mufflers and it's one of the best sounding cars i've ever heard.
This was such a good video, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Got a big smile when you finally took it out for the first drive, and hear how good it sounds! Thanks for uploading
Wow. I work on cars, just went to a fl5 civic type r, after the ownership of a bmw 335i. Built a swapped first gen Toyota pickup, rebuilt a em1 civic si, had a modded Subaru Sti, fox body mustang, and I know , from experience, that Audi’s are the most difficult to diagnose and repair. My hands off to you sir, you are a great garage mechanic.
Incredible video! Kudos for all the hard work you put in. Car sounds amazing. I have (not so) fond memories of rebuilding cars in a small garage using jackstslands 😅! Fellow 4.2 owner here. S5 though!
FWIW, in place of 26 cans of brake cleaner, we use lacquer thinner from a re-fillable pressure sprayer that can be purchased from harbor freight. Saves a bunch of money and works nearly as well.
You've made this rebuild *almost* look easy! Very nice work. It does sound fantastic!! I'd also be very afraid of it needing any major work ever again 😅😅 I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya
Your production value was amazing. 1tb of video footage 😅, that must have been so much work to edit. Your car turned out so good. I can’t believe you knocked out all that work on it. Crazy.
You did a great job here, checked all the boxes who needs to be checked! Ofcourse you made it more expensive because of the upgrades and that waterpump housing you could buy it second hand, thermostat and pump plus gaskets are widely buyable. You are correct in saying that these cars end up in the crusher because they end up in the hands of that “Edgar” guy you bought the car from…. Well, I’m glad you were able to save it. You are definitely a great mechanic 👍🏼
A shop I used to work at was an APR dealer. But they had been doing APR since the b5 a4 APR days. The shop had an APR prototype b6 rs4. It was dark grey I think charcoal grey or something with the darker red interior and made 750hp and was manual. I got to drive it once when we were doing a car show. It's an amazing vehicle and a damn shame that someone would neglect one. They are a fairly rare vehicle.
Nice video a friend of mine had a similar S4 car was fun to drive helped him did the flap mod car sounded really nice. Unfortunately his car was lost to a fire due to a ruptured power steering high pressure line.😢
I love B6s so much. I want to start a channel focused around mine soon, but I'm just learning the basics of videography so I'm a long ways off. Big turbo 1.8L A4 here. For the record, I run pretty competitively at autocross for the cars size/weight locally, but it has taken a very long time to get there.
I bought mine with 130k miles chain not done and it didnt start misfiring from chains until 170k. Its now at 230k no issues. They are actually very reliable if u do ur research on maintenance and the jackal tune mechanics usually answer most questions on the facebook groups
Congrats. Just saw on VAG Technic one of the guides on the bbk code motor is officially in obsolete status and they have bought the last ten or so they could find. Dinosaur status approaches.
I have this B6 S4 (2004), purchased it 1 year ago with 88K miles on the clock, ran perfect until the beginning of this year, and the timing chains went… I’ve paid £7.5K for a full engine rebuild, haven’t got the car back yet as it’s taking some time to complete… was a hard pill to swallow BUT I love every second of driving it, and I’m planning on keeping it for years to come. But yeah, be prepared to fork out a lot of money on these cars lol
the sad thing is, taking off from a PO that didn't care is hard, but I have 223k miles on my B6 S4 6MT setup, and its clean, dry and everything functions as it should, granted its been taken very well care of in my time of ownership, oil changes every 3K, all fluids serviced regularly etc, chains were done by me in the driveway at 193k miles, jhm oil cooler setup, all aftermarket mounts, the only thing I am missing is the carrier bearing reinforcement, so no launches per say, but everyday it sees redline and no lift shifts thanks to Jackal tuning! I absolutely love my car, AVG 18MPG @39 MPH in Tampa with 93 octane only fuel and at least 100-120mph pulls daily...
a 2011 s5 4.2 with a manual was one of my attainable dream cars until I learned about the timing chain. I'm mechanically inclined enough to do basic things, but I have no logistical way to work on an engine and I had to give up on that dream. Great looking car, and love the sound. I used to work for a higher end luxury dealership chain and we took a silver 2011 in on trade. 6 speed, Black Interior, 82k miles. I think we were only selling it for 14k at that time? It was around maybe 2018-2019. I think about that car from time to time.
I really wish I found this video before buying one of these S4s. Mine lasted a week before the timing that supposedly was in good condition gave out. But hey you live and learn 🤷🏾♂️.
I feel your pain. I had a 99 A4 1.8t Quattro auto I bought cheap. It needed the trans swapped out but came with a "good used one". After swapping in the replacement it failed within 60 miles. So I said "screw it, I'm converting it to a manual". So I found a deal on a car with a bad engine but most the parts I needed for the manual conversion. I had towed since it was about 90 miles away. Then again the auto trans comes out for the second time. Also I had to find a special insert for the crank so the pilot bearing would fit for the flywheel/clutch. (auto vs manual crank on engine is different). Oh yea, also trans mount brackets are longer. Ran great after the conversion only issue was a CEL because the TCU has to be coded out since of course no more auto trans. Unfortunately not long after, the rear main seal started to leak when parked, even though I put a new one in. At the point I decided to sell and let the new owner deal with it (and yes I told him about it). Car #2 2000 TT FWD 1.8t manual with a blown cylinder. I found a good used 06a block from a VW Jetta 1.8t that was compatible so I swapped everything over from the TT engine with all new gaskets, water pump, timing belt, etc... Once done it ran great then about two weeks later a careless driver (woman) turns right in front of me in a pick-up trunk and totals both cars. (was around noon bright sunny day with 100% visibility, but she said "I saw you but wasn't thinking". So turned in front of me anyways) Fortunately we both survived with minor injuries (impact was at 50 mph) and I got enough to pay off medical bills and scraped enough together to get another good used 2003 TT Quattro 1.8t manual.
You have climbed the Mount Everest of timing jobs, done what few dared, done what many say is impossible. Kudos to you. You give us 4.2 owners hope. Lol
2006 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6 with front and rear timing chains on Jack Shafts like a Porcha says hold my beer.
4.2 chains pinned against the firewall and engine out are what stopped me from owning a used one.

As finicky as the platform is the B6 will forever be one of my favorites. The sound of the S4 or 1.8t with a proper turboback exhaust is unmatched.
Best use of a license plate (for soldering). Ever.
wow you need to run a repair shop haha so professional! respectful sir!
a 2011 s5 4.2 with a manual was one of my attainable dream cars until I learned about the timing chain.
👍🏻
Awesome job there mate!
This is why I'm a Honda guy. 😂 great video though!
I had one of these! Fun car, but timing chain go brrrrrr
Also kinda disappointed you didn't give us a total price breakdown of all the new parts!
1 TB?! Good shit, Chris!
Great video, didn't feel an hour long
I have an Audi RS6 Avant 2016,
Each time it enters the garage, it's painful. But since I drive like a grandfather, it doesn't break that often.
Just wait till you start having issues with the excess heat from the headers😂 so funny
Great film. Very inspiring, I’ve subscribed. Can’t wait for more 👍
I always loved the b6 more than b7
10x uglier
Car #2
2000 TT FWD 1.8t manual with a blown cylinder. So turned in front of me anyways)
Fortunately we both survived with minor injuries (impact was at 50 mph) and I got enough to pay off medical bills and scraped enough together to get another good used 2003 TT Quattro 1.8t manual.
