    I stopped the video 12mins in just to make this comment….I was working at Musi with Dave and Tommy Gonzales and I’m happy for all of Dave’s success and even happier he gave Tommy G some credit ….I know this isn’t about Tommy but I’m glad to hear Dave give Tommy his props …..Tommy (a personal friend) doesn’t even come close to getting the credit he deserves in the cylinder head world…..👍👍👍

    Dave built the heads for my 800whp STi. He talked me out of installing huge cams (thank god) and gave me an immense amount of knowledge in like 5 minutes. He accidentally full ported one of my heads and then called and gave me a great deal on doing the other head since he made a mistake. So not only did I get an amazing product but also got a port for next to nothing bc he wanted to make it right with me. Headgames is the best around.

      Superlite slc. Issue is on street tires. 700hp is easy. But for actual race slicks car can handle close to double that. Cam and head package is gonna be interesting and probably fairly custom.

    Thought ive yet to meet Dave in person, I've studied all of his content for years. Our small online conversations ALWAYS offer me some sort of knowledge I didn't previously have. Dave is VERY good at his craft and his experience shows in his product and results. My FAVORITE thing about Dave is the fact he is NOT afraid to share what he knows. His dedication to excellence as well as teaching are priceless. I love seeing the Alpha podcast grow more each week, and having guests like Dave is a milestone in itself. Keep it up guys!

    That's the spirit. People spend enormous amounts of money, time and energy to get their cars to certain levels of performance and it's comforting to see guys like Dave are out there actually recognizing this and caring about doing the best they can without prioritizing bleeding people dry for it but rather being clear about what works for specific goals with vast amounts of hands-on knowledge to back it all up. This makes all the difference and they way he speaks says it all. That was thoroughly enjoyable.

    You can tell this guy definitely offers his customers cost-effective options. Not one of those shops/guys that bleeds the customer dry.
    For what he says, it's quite true in many cases as people can over do a head and lose power or have no benefit.

    I met Dave at TX2K12, he did a combustion chamber, pocket port, cams, valves, and spring on my ej20 head. I built a flow bench and tested my head compared to another shop. No comparison. My head flows better, everywhere. It has more torque off idle than variable cam ej25s. It simply a better car and has been running strong for 60k miles at over 600 HP. Dave is an awesome person. Dave is an awesome artist. Dave Makes the best cylinder heads and cares to the point where he will talk you out of too much.

    The best analogy of porting a head is like sucking through a straw, the smaller the diameter of the straw the harder it is to suck and if the diameter is of the hole is too big you choke. It’s all about having the right combination.

    I have a degree in pro golf management and my old man is a master mechanic and machinist my first memories are helping him build 700+ hp sbc. And the dimples on a golf ball are literally to cause friction and grab the air to allow you to control and stabilize the ball. Without the dimples on a smooth ball when you hit it the ball it’s the craziest knuckle ball you’ve ever seen it will move 20 feet left right up down wherever and not fly very long at all. But to think the dimples actually allows the air to move faster over the all is just dumb. They literally grab the air 😂. The only place it could be helpful is in like a carb spacer to cause some atomization of fuel and air for a moment but any longer then that is a waste and hindering you the fuel can’t atomize anymore without boosting it.

    On the 4B11 topic I agree with Headgames for the most part with oversized valves, those alone won't cut it and the job needs to be done by a experienced shop.I believe you have to go all the way with the head, upgraded springs, guides, oversized valves, cams, and port the head, and have that done by someone with that experience. For example, I have all that done to my Evo X. So fully built head, built bottom end. I have a friend that also built his motor around the same time as me and we have the same builder, same tuner, same parts, stock turbos, only difference is I have the ported head, oversized valves, and guides right. So we wanted to test the theory out on the street. We raced each other from rolls 3 times, and every time from 3rd-5th gear my car was faster by half a car. Then we both noticed that we have different fall offs for our top end acceleration. My friend acceleration falls off at 120 like stock, but my acceleration continues to 140 145ish. Now I know people will argue that the stock head flows better, but at the end of the day if that's true my car shouldn't be the faster car on similar setups it should be the opposite. I'm just throwing that out there, there's paper, tests, and theory, and there's just doing it right. But to be clear, I am currently past that. I'm currently at a level where I am putting that head work to use, and I went that route because on the stock motor, I cracked a piston and snapped a valve in cylinder 1, and I choose to build the head once since I knew where I want my power level to be.

    • @luvhcchris
      @luvhcchris 5 місяців тому +2

      @@jonathanbailey646 gotcha. That’s impressive changes to head on the stock turbo makes up that much difference on the rolls, head to head 👌. Lots of other factors like driver mod, etc but if it’s the same result every time, then we can make our own conclusions based off that haha

    • @drewdavis239
      @drewdavis239 5 місяців тому +3

      Even if you say it's faster and he says it's not...... at 1:15:30 he says oversized valves don't fit the seat/head. It's a longevity issue, the valve can't dissipate the heat partially sitting on the aluminum.

    • @jonathanbailey646
      @jonathanbailey646 5 місяців тому +3

      @@drewdavis239Saying and doing is two different things. He did say that, no one is out there putting these combos to the street to know if the setups work or not. So things remain in theory, I just proved my combo works. On the point about the valves partly on the aluminum. I'm not discrediting him or anything, but I did say you'll need to bring your head to a shop who's experienced in this, if the valves can't rest on the seats, you can't get a proper seal and you'll see that in your vacuum on your boost gauge. But like I said I'm not going to deny his claim, oversized valve jobs doesn't work for everyone and it's a known fact. I already have 3 years and 20K miles on this head, if I burn a valve then alright. They're only $16 per exh valve, and I can take the head off myself and bring it to the shop. It won't be that simple for other's I'm sure but I'm paying to play and it seems like I'm winning.

    Man I feel like people forgot about the Evo X. I remember they used to be called the mini godzilla since it had a dual clutch gear box like the nissan gtr, which were the only two JDM cars sold with that at the time.

    I'm about an hour in so you may cover this as you go... The idea that you need big money to make 800 on a BMW is a miss. E36 M3 S52, 4094 It stops being a street car after about 600 though. The CNC is nice in that you can be assured balanced flow between cylinders and no mistakes once a proper program is written. Getting a skilled guy to spend all that time to port/polish your head manually is a lot of hours. I would have loved hearing about how you optimize a head when you have constraints. i.e. How do you max out a head on pump gas? How do you maximize peak while maintaining area under the curve for a rally car where you want grunt and top speed? One trick ponies like drag cars and track cars make life easy. Usually you have to trade off one thing for another. Cams have improved a bit (or maybe its just emissions) and you can buy aftermarket shrick cam that give you improvements through the whole range. I'd love to hear someone talk about custom cams on the platform. B58 is all new technology. The S52 took 15 years for tuners to figure out and prices to come down.

    Dying to know. Why measure in CFM?
    I've always understood its air density that matters. The old 20 psi at 500 degrees makes less power than 20 psi at 100 degrees.
    There are just more air molecules.
    Does this same logic apply to CFM? If the air is heated or chilled does it affect CFM all things the same?

    • @SWREngineering
      @SWREngineering Місяць тому +1

      CFM is not the same as mass flow, no.

    Golfball dimples could work... but it would have to be thoroughly researched. You would need the right size and spacing of the dimples for the Reynolds # you're targeting. And they probably wouldnt help in the straight part of the port, or on the far side of the corner. Dimples are turbulators, that can energize the boundary layer and make the air stick to a corner better... so it might be useful on the near side corner, to get air around that radius smoother...

    Last time i checked, a golf ball flys through the air. Not the air flying through the golf ball.
    Nor does the golf ball fly in an enclosed chamber or port!
    I agree with Dave, a stupid idea.

    • @SWREngineering
      @SWREngineering Місяць тому

      The only thing a golf ball pattern does in a port, is make a thicker boundary layer and effectively make the port smaller... might help if you have a too big port for the combo and you can't add material.
