If there is enough interest, I would consider doing a live playthrough of A Boy and His Blob on Twitch. Give this pinned comment a like and if it gets over 100 likes I will do it. Thanks!

I’m only 28 and was surprised when the 40 yr old across the street hadn’t played this title. Luckily he has a cartridge that’s hacked so we can play any game ever made for nes, showed him this game, freakin loves it.

We had this game, and I remember being impressed by the concept at the time, but I also mostly remember being frustrated by this game and giving up on it.

This game will always have a special place in my heart. When I was about 4 or 5 years old, my dad and I would play this game and draw out maps on large pieces of paper. My dad died not long after and we never finished the game together. Over the last 30 years, I've gotten to the end of the game, but still haven't beaten it.

This was the game I got for Christmas when I also got my NES. The box art really captured my imagination but at 5 years old and being used to Atari games and simple nes titles like Super Mario I didn't understand how to play this. It frustrated me to no end. Now as an adult I get it and I can beat it in minutes but the negative impact on my childhood is always there. I don't play it anymore due to my mixed feelings about it but I still have my original cart and will never get rid of it.

This is one of two NES games I got as a gift from my dad when I was a kid! (One of the few memories I have left of him, unfortunately) He got it for me for Christmas along with Wheel of Fortune Junior Edition, and I couldn't stop playing it, even though I had NO idea what I was doing. I remember figuring out how to make it to Blobolonia a few times but dying immediately to the Cherry Bombs and never getting farther than that. Good memories though! I loved the video!
(You're getting craftier with Mullet Boy, I like it!)

This game was weird and totally had the feel of an Atari game for the NES, but I absolutely loved it as a kid. It was the 2nd game I legitimately beat (after NES Ducktails and prior to the original Legend of Zelda), and for that it will always have a special place in my heart.

  • @TopSpot123

I have this game and beat it back in the day. I'll never understand how we were able to figure out such obtuse games before the internet, that's the advantage of youth's having so much time and so little else to do I guess. I always wanted the GB sequel, but never got it. One of my favorite things in this game is that you can slide off of ledges and the boy just hangs in the air until he notices and looks down, Wile E Coyote style! You can even try to run back to the ledge before he falls. That was always fun.

One glitch I found when I originally played the game. Created a hole on solid ground. Have the walk back and forth in/out of the hole rapidly and call the blob. Done correctly the boys feet will be a pixel or two under ground allowing you to walk through screens you normally couldn't.
There is a spot in the underground if you do this you can walk all the way to the final boss and passed leafing to a poem about a cat in a tree.

I recall messing around with the ketchup jellybeans, trying to force them to the blob. I don't know how I did it, and it only happened once, but I got him to eat one. He just disappeared, soft-locking the game. No matter how many ketchup jellybeans I threw after that had no effect. He was just gone forever, or until I restarted anyway.

The kid in the commercial for pitfall that you show is a 13 year old Jack Black. I didn't know he was in that commercial until I saw this video, and I am surprised I recognized him. But yeah, according to the Google machine, that's Jack Black.

G3, it even says in the Instruction Manual 14 fabulous flavors (but you are right it actually DOES list grape but it makes it as a 15 count in the entire list) so in one way it is correct with how 14 flavors actually do appear in the game

my friend owned this game and you can actally turn Blobbie into a wall by force feeding him a Ketchup jellybean. to do this you gotta select the bean b4 ketchup ( i believe honey) and in mid swing b4 u throw it switch to ketchup and he will eat it and turn into a brick wall

This is one of the few NES games I skipped back in the day. I just thought it looked too silly and even turned down the chance to have my folks buy it for me. Interesting story about the creator...I loved Pitfall. :)

Pitfall is still fun to play. Strong reserve turning down the game back in the day though lol.

Great video. I always wanted to like this game but never could get far, and would get lost. Than didn't know what jelly bean did what. I was super happy when I heard about the one on the Wii and had a great time playing that one.
    Great video as always
