@GenerationGapGaming, Just a quick question. When Jason appears inside the cabin, didn't that every freak you out? For some reason which I cannot explain, every single time when I played this as a kid, I jumped whenever Jason appeared in the damn cabin. Whether it's the sound or the way he jumps on screen made me startled even if I was ready for it!! Ugh, such bad memories.
Fun fact.. it’s possible to fight Jason in the big cabins. When fighting him on the path, when he runs off screen he’s usually in the nearest big cabin
I'm glad someone actually took the time to shed light on this great classic. Damn this game used to scare the hell out of us lol. Especially that loud sound when Jason appeared, it was a wrap. One of my friends literally threw the controller and ran away when he saw Jason the first time lol. Great times. Thanks for the video.
*I prefer just lighting the large cabins to get the torch then collect as many medicine jars and taking out jason with 1 counselor over 3 days to make it quick. I always get the sweater on Day 2 from Pamela and the pitchfork. Easy work if you know how to dodge in the cabins. ✅🙂*
@@nintendoor1Lighting the cabins just gives you the Flashlight. However you’ll get notes at some point you’ll get Note that says “There’s a Torch in Cabin by the Lake” It’s the top big Cabin. Go in and it’s near the door on way out
@@thebeatlesandoasis05 and be fucking careful. I can't tell you how many times I've see the torch and reacted too late to grab it. If it goes off screen, you're screwed lol.
@@lucyloo2228you can get the torch without lighting any fireplaces, you just need to find the note that says to go into the woods and then go into the woods with a key and find the hidden cabin with the other torch note, its a certain woods and specific cabin though which I'm not gonna say so i dont ruin the fun. You can also get the torch by lighting four fireplaces (not saying which four, youll need to figure that out), reading the torch note and then getting it from the big cabin by the lake, both torch strats require going to the cabin by the lake for the torch.
This is one of my favorite NES games. I play it every Halloween and put Jason back in his grave. I try not to rush through it too fast though. I like to take my time with most of my games.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with love for this game. Every October I go through several games including this one, symphony of the night, and usually one of the resident evil games, as well as watch horror movies all month long. This game doesn't get nearly enough love or credit for being one of the first survival horror games, and its genuinely fun and will make you jump too. Been playing it since I was 9, and probably beaten it over 50 times easily, but I always go back to it
I used to avoid fighting him in the cabins on day 3 and gave up for awhile. I used to actually run to other counselors to save them(before i knew you could simply press start a switch to whoever is being attacked) I couldn't land a hit because of his nonstop speed and taking damage everytime he moved in to attack. Then i figured out to properly dodge both strikes everytime. The trick is the timing. Dodging has a delay when you use it. When he comes at you, you wanna dodge sooner than you normally would on his first strike. Dodging sooner for the first strike gives you a chance to reset and immediately dodge his second attack. This really works if you choose to fight inside. Helped me finally defeat him.
As someone who speed ran this to the second highest place on the leaderboard(like 8 years ago), I appreciate the in depth love and detail you put into explaining everything. The speedrunning strat makes you ignore so much about the game that made me fall in love with it as a kid so fuck yeah.
This is one of my all time favorite NES games and I'm happy to see I'm not the only one on UA-cam trying to defend it's bad reputation. I think most of it's detractors have been people that just didn't understand the game or just played it for fifteen minutes before declaring it 'dumb' and giving up. Big thanks on sharing the forest trick to get the torch. I've been playing this game for nearly 3 decades now and never knew you could get it that way. That's way quicker than my method of chasing notes around.
This was one of those “only new game for a long time” kind of games for me, if you’re an 80’s kid you know the deal. Whether it was good or bad, you had to master it because until the next birthday or Christmas, this was all you had! I was able to eventually beat it back then, but it wasn’t until the past ten or so years where I learned about how fast you could really clear this one. I clear it about every day lately, got it down to around 20 minutes.
This is one of my favorite NES games. I got it when I was 10/11 when it came out. I was able to figure stuff out and beat him. I loved it and still do.
Finally settled a score from 30 yrs ago thanks to your video. I loved this game and I came close having killed him 2 times but could never kill him a 3rd. I was only 6 or 7 yrs old playing this and thought that it would just loop and you couldn't win. Alot of this games magic has to do with that music that always stuck with me. I'm so glad you explained LJN's role in bringing this game to market. It drives me nuts when people say this game is terrible just because it says LJN on the label. Friday the 13th will always be one of my favorites.
My brother and I loved this game and played it many times, but never with a manual. We would grind it out but never could beat it. Now I want to go back to Crystal Lake and take Jason down. Calling my brother now to set up a raid. Thanks for rekindling this memory!
Awesome job on this video. It brought back a lot of memories from my childhood. As a kid, I could never figure out the patterns to anything that happened. I somehow did manage to beat the game once, by good old stubbornness.
This was a staple at my house. Ljn gets a bad rap for some of the best hidden gems. Friday the 13th and Jaws has very good game mechanics and play. I would love to see this generation of kids try to play these amd complain how "hard" they are. Knowing Atlus made this, just made this game even more amazing. Atlus and SNK were way way ahead of their time.
Good luck peeling them off of repetitive, micro transaction laden, bland, corporate approved shit to get them to try a game that requires a little thought or imagination. Fuck, I am old.
Jaws was a great game. There was some tough fights in that game. If you got caught in the shallow water area and had the battle where the only thing that spawned was mini-sharks and jellyfish you were in for a tough time!
I loved this game as a kid. So many strategic ways to beat the game. Once I figured out how to beat it, I used to challenge myself by beating the game using only the rock weapon. One of the mechanics not explained in the manual is that once Jason is low enough on health OR you're the only counselor left, the fight turns into a death fight. This means that it only ends when either you die or Jason is defeated. Considering the rock takes 7 hits to take out just one health away from Jason, it definitely becomes an endurance fight. Also, doing so in one of the cabins is the only way to properly survive.
I really enjoyed this video. I never really bothered with this game because I remember being frustrated with it as a kid but this video makes me want to try playing it again after all these years! Love your content btw.
Kind of an unrelated question, but what did you think of Shovel Knight? I was pleasantly surprised. Some other recommendation to try (though not for your channel) are Axiom Verge, Celeste, Slain Back From Hell, and Hallow Knight. All can be found on your Switch if you haven't tried them.
I always just figured they made him those colors to display Jason in the "night light" since that's typically when he is seen most throughout his movie history. And the reason he stayed that way in the day time is because it was Nintendo and it was generic but got the point across lol. None the less, great research, theories and video in general. Awesome.
Here are a few strats I used to really lay on some damage to Jason (which I came up with when I was a kid playing the game a ton). When the Jason alarm tells you he's attacking the children, fight him inside to save the kids. Upon exiting, go right to the exit (which is the 3'oclock position on the map). Once you're back on the main path, immediately go left for the small cabin. Before you get there, Jason will attack you on the road. After he runs away, continue left and enter the small cabin. You'll find him inside and fight him again. Just don't leave the cabin before fighting Jason, otherwise he'll disappear. If the Jason alarm tells you he's attacking a counselor, you can enter the closest small cabin and switch to the counselor he's attacking. By exiting before fighting him, Jason will attack you on the road. With the right weapons his health will go down really fast. I also memorized how many of each weapon it would take to knock out 1 pellet of Jason's health: stones - 5, knife - 4, machete - 3, axe - 2, torch/pitchfork - 1. While fighting in the cabins, you only get to attack Jason 7 times before he'll run away. Make sure you have the right weapon before engaging. Deathmatch - There are a few scenarios that will cause Jason to fight until one of you dies. Get his health down to 7 pellets or less during a fight, or having less than 3 counselors. Once one of those conditions are met, any fight that you are currently in or are about to be in will not end regardless if it's on the road or in a cabin. Carefully paying attention to Jason's health will help you avoid a deathmatch you cannot win, as will keeping the counselors alive.
great points on part 3 inspiration but i personally think it was based off of part 6...only because part 6 is the only movie in the franchise with kids at the camp and counselors that are actually protecting them. like jason walking into the lake cabin and that little girl sees him watching her 😱
There's a pic in the manual that is clearly Part V (Roy), the opening screen is obviously Part IV, the Jason on the cover of the box is Part VII. I'd say the Jason in the game is almost certainly Part 3. Not only is his mask not damaged (Part 3 is the only time he is without axe mark) but now with that poster (which I had seen before but not really known it's origin) I think it is extremely likely to be Part 3.
Great video. A couple things though...you don't need to go into the woods to get the torch. The notes are decoys. Also, Jason can be chased down after fighting him anytime, with no swapping counselors. You can encounter him outside or in neighboring cabins (the latter moreso just _after_ a battle with him outside but I have found him occasionally without one). From my experience the sweater doesn't lessen the chance of him attacking you outside. I always get the sweater but much of day 2 and almost all of day 3 I've fought him outside. The pitchfork is more powerful than the torch, taking 3 ticks of health off for every 2 hits compared to the torch's 1-1, and if Jason's health gets down to a certain point outside he won't retreat and it'll be a fight to the death. So get Jason outside with the torch on day 2 and the pitchfork on day 3 and these can end pretty quick, so no real urgency with saving the kids. Let Jason have his fun with the annoying brats. 😗
I dunno why but i Love this...i watch at least once a month now. Hands down the best Ft13th review for nes ever! please continue making awsome game reviews like this one. So glad i found your channel and subscribed a while back 👍
This was the first game I ever Played on NES. We rented a NES from the movie store. We lived in a trailer park and there was an urban legend of Jason living in the forest around us (Stupid kid stuff lol) My moms bf rented this game and Wizards and Warriors, for me. I stayed up alone in the dark playing it in the dark in our living room. To terrified to go take a leak thinking for sure Jason was waiting for me in the bathroom hahah. Miss those days!
This game was spooky when i played it back in the day...scared the crap outta me ...especially when you go into a cabin...that cabin music scared me ...i could never really figure out how to play it either...but i still liked it anyway ...
I just recently did a Visual and musical cover of the main cabin theme . Check it out and tell me what you think ^_^ ua-cam.com/video/oBuKfhZ18S8/v-deo.html

ha, i agree, i played this alone and was genuinely scared by that legendary intro....anyway, your theory on purple jason is new and interesting, they DID take influence from part 7* for the cover art so take that for what u think its worth, nostalgia's high with this one great vid
Yo thanks for this insight & review of a game that I too was stumped about & too scared to figure out. I only had it a day or two as a rental myself without the manual. This was ahead of its time fa sure! It is actually a sound game.
I know most people think that this game is bad, but I like it, I remember that the first time I've played it, when I saw Jason I got so scared that I never plyed it again as a kid lol, only when I grew up. Very good video, thanks for it.
I don't remember how i got my copy, i think maybe it was part of those 100-in-one cassettes? Not sure, but i do remember loving it and played it like crazy. This video is some great nostalgia, nice job dude. Now i just feel like playing this, like NOW! Happy Halloween!
I still have my cartridge, I liked the game then and I still like it today. The soundtracks are so repetitive but nothing than you get bored to listen to. In my opinion Crissy is better than Mark, yes they have the same speed running and jump as high but she can throw weapons further and faster than Mark, Mark can row faster though. Laura is fast but her jumping sucks. Paul is just good for the boat so I always kept him close to the children's cabins. And yes Debbie and George are the worse.
Bought this game at a garage sale. Ran around and didn't know how to really play or beat it for years. Then one day I had a few friends over in high school we smoked pot and played. One of them knew how to play it properly and finally beat it that day. It only took 13 years
This was one of my first games when I was a kid I love playing it I always watch Friday the 13th with my sisters even though I was probably too young for it I was born in 1983 and by 1987 I was watching the movies with my sister who is 8 years older than me but I loved it. And then when we got the game I immediately played it it took me years to beat it but I finally did it. I subscribe to you and like the video it was awesome thank you.
I actually tried google searching it, couldn’t find it.... can you by any chance provide a link... I’d love to download and play it for my students in school
Heres the link sorry. I got the name confused with another song in was thinking of choosing lol. The song is from the envato market but it's called 80s dark by airport music. heres the link audiojungle.net/item/80s-dark/22017569
I recently did a Visual and musical cover of the main cabin theme . Check it out and tell me what you think ^_^ ua-cam.com/video/oBuKfhZ18S8/v-deo.html
The nostalgia is killing me lol. Great vid, i haven't played this game in maybe 20 years but i watched this until the end. I might pull out the old nes later today, probably not though I just got Red Dead Redemption 2
One of my fondest games from my childhood. My younger brother and I played the crap out of this game when we were 8 and 6 years old. In fact we still talk about it and play it 30 years later. Holy shit i.just said 30 years later omg. Man I need to get my brother over so we can jam out some Friday the 13th nes.
+GenerationGapGaming Well, your tips may make it more reasonable, but I bet it won't be easy. :) I'm not really known for "beating" games. They usually beat me... :/
I loved this game as a kid even tho it scared me. But I always preferred to catch him out on the road to do damage. I remember having a 4 screen slug fest with him on the road and then catching him in a cabin and his life was basically gone!
Tyler!!!!!!!! I just ordered Friday the 13th, the game for Nintendo Switch!!! (August 13th) I'm so psyched, I never thought it would be released on Nintendo. Looking forward to seeing if I can find the Jason with the purple nes colors. The original will always be a classic!!!
Dude, I used to scare my friends and family when I'd play this game. I used to know where all the hot spots were and could sometimes beat Jason to the cabins he'd frequent the most before he got there. Also, if people don't know this, if you walk right to a large cabin after fighting Jason, more times than not, he'll be inside that cabin. I did that on accident when I rented the game, and it scared me so bad... I mean to see his name in the bottom corner in a large cabin... I didn't even know he went in those. I know, little kid logic. Anyway, I loved everything, except the zombies. Unless those are supposed to be hallucinations or "ghosts" of the former kids/counselors... It just didn't really fit the Friday the 13th Canon... But either way, I loved it 😀
I just discovered your channel with this video and I love it! Great explanation of this game. I owned it back in the day too and got really good at it. I always felt like this game and Nightmare On Elm Street got bad reputations just cause they were published by LJN. Both are rather solid NES games.
Something I thought about when you were discussing the color palette choice for Jason in the NES game is that the color purple in Japan is commonly associated with death, which may explain why Jason was purple pre-NES to begin with.
I just want to mention 1 thing. If you eat an apple before doing your voiceover work, you can eliminate all the wet mouth sounds and lip smacking. I have no idea why it works but it does. I used to record dialog for video games and it works like a charm everytime.
This is absolutely awesome me and my little sister would play this for hours and when he popped out on the road she would scream, we always found notes and had some sort of idea how to grab the torch. We only got to kill him twice and that was once, dodging with nes controller was hard! I still have this game, the system, and a floor tv from the era, nice tips to kill him, I actually just put a cheat code in an emulator several years back and wiped him out the unfair way haha. Dude the video of the rental stores was priceless we used to rent all the movies and the game before I finally purchased it, also got the nightmare on elm street nes game, there was also a pc version for a 286 with no sound card haha!
The only game I still have the manual, box and foam for. This game scared the fuck outta me as a kid as I played it downstairs in an off room with the lights off. So easy to beat now but it was tough as a kid!
Jeez, I was like 5 or 6 trying to play this game... where was my adult supervision lol. Looking back, I wasn't so terrible at this game, and I learned a lot from this video!
I instantly liked the video when I heard you say your name is Tyler lol. That's my name as well, and you're like 2 years older than me, so I knew I could relate right away. I forgot what an insanely complicated game this was! This was a really in depth game for the time for sure. Definitely no Gremlins 2 lol...although difficulty was about as bad. Fuck those “leaps of fate” in that game haha
As a kid this game would freak me out anytime Jason appeared on screen. As a novice gamer I knew it meant I was gonna take heavy damage or simply die. It took me awhile to not freak out and to try and fight back. One night I was able to survive his attacks without too much damage. I actually beat him and thought the game was over. When the game restarted on day two I turned off the power and set it aside. No way I was going to go through the frustration of the game again. The rumor back then pre-internet was that you had to beat him 13 times. Never played the game again. I think that’s why it got a bad game reputation.
I'm with you, I thought this was a great game. I was the youngest of all my siblings and at first they thought it was funny to scare me with it. Then they were kind of surprised it didn't. I do remember a few nightmares though. But I was 5.
i enjoyed this game a lot as a kid.....yes i played it every single time via game genie....but there are just so many nes games i enjoyed so much more via game genie, made it fun imo :)
Did you know that each counselor actually throws the weapons at different speeds? The slower characters have some benefits ro them. I know it's not just me that feels this way. It's subtle but you start to notice. Nobody feels useless. Not sure if the manual mentions this at all. I never had the manual
Always preferred the C64 version to this game. There's also a French game called Zombi (loosely based on NOTLD and DOTD) which plays a lot closer to this, but it's 16bit and European..
I remember using a bootleg cartrige with different games in it but sometimes when the console is reset this game would load instead of the other, this game was not in the cartrige, maybe it was rewritten a couple of times.

Oh shit man! Your vid takes me back. Friday the 13th was the first game i got for the nes as a gift.
great points on part 3 inspiration but i personally think it was based off of part 6...only because part 6 is the only movie in the franchise with kids at the camp and counselors that are actually protecting them. like jason walking into the lake cabin and that little girl sees him watching her 😱
There's a pic in the manual that is clearly Part V (Roy), the opening screen is obviously Part IV, the Jason on the cover of the box is Part VII. I'd say the Jason in the game is almost certainly Part 3. Not only is his mask not damaged (Part 3 is the only time he is without axe mark) but now with that poster (which I had seen before but not really known it's origin) I think it is extremely likely to be Part 3.
@@baronterror Agreed..you know your friday the 13th franchise bro 👊
Aww the good ole days, great video btw way your southern accent made it even more intriguing!
Karate kid was a fun game. It was one of the few games with a decent multiplayer for NES. Atlus also made Trauma Center: which was a great DS game.
Dude yes. Trauma Center was a blast!!! Hope you enjoyed the video!!!
Looks like we got a pro Friday the 13th player over here! Great video, you definitely brought some redemption for this game.
This is the greatest walk through I've ever seen of this game ever!!!! Awesome video and new sub!!!
This game still creeps me out to this day. And I've gone back to it many times.
My neighbor had this game in late '80s. She'd let me watch her play, and occasionally I was able to play as well.

This is one of my favorite games for the NES also the adventures of Bayou Billy.
I only rented Bayou Billy once and I need to try to find a copy again. Hope you enjoyed the video man!!
Man give me your mailing address and I'll mail u a copy of Bayou Billy. Its easily one of the hardest games on nes.
Yo thanks for this insight & review of a game that I too was stumped about & too scared to figure out. I only had it a day or two as a rental myself without the manual. This was ahead of its time fa sure! It is actually a sound game.
I remember this game scaring the hell out of me, not sure why now. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I know most people think that this game is bad, but I like it, I remember that the first time I've played it, when I saw Jason I got so scared that I never plyed it again as a kid lol, only when I grew up. Very good video, thanks for it.
i'll play this game for my halloween special tomorrow night
I rented the game as a child, one of the few NES games that I beat.
I loved this game as a kid and was actually surprised to find out people didn't like it later on.
I would agree with you on that this game is far ahead of its time. This is the only nes game that got me startled playing.
Bought this game at a garage sale. Ran around and didn't know how to really play or beat it for years. Then one day I had a few friends over in high school we smoked pot and played. One of them knew how to play it properly and finally beat it that day. It only took 13 years
Jason poppin up outta nowhere in a cabin scared the shit out of me as a kid.
Speedrunner of the OG NES FT13TH. Once you get the game, it's pretty fun
Can some one please give me the name of this background music... I tried looking it up and can’t find it anywhere ???
It's called synthwave dark from the envato market man. Hope you enjoyed the video!
First played this game when I was 9 years old. Didn't beat it until I went back to it yearssss later at 39...maybe 40
This game use to scare the crap out of me. Late night on a Saturday. I’m talking in the AM hours, lights off.
The nostalgia is killing me lol. Great vid, i haven't played this game in maybe 20 years but i watched this until the end. I might pull out the old nes later today, probably not though I just got Red Dead Redemption 2
This guy has the perfect amount of country twang in his voice. I'm a fan sir, u remind me of home
Love the clips you used in this video very well edited and put together 😀
No wonder I've never defeated Jason! There really is a lot more strategy involved in this game than I ever considered. Thanks for the tips, Tyler!
You are so welcome man. Let me know if you beat it!
+GenerationGapGaming
Well, your tips may make it more reasonable, but I bet it won't be easy. :)
I'm not really known for "beating" games. They usually beat me... :/
Those Freddy & Jason action figures that were modeled after the NES games are awesome.
I actually forgot about this game until I saw this memory. It was actually a very fun game though, just not one people mention that often.
It should be in there, since it sounds like a straight up port of the game.
What I didn't know it was coming to the Switch! I must get this. Thanks for letting me know!!!!!
Knowing now that this was developed by Atlus the cabin gameplay makes so much sense.
Loving that southern accent. Cool channel! Subscribed and liked!
That art of him in purple was also the cover of the soundtrack record for part 3...i was given the LP for my bday...
One of my all time favorite NES Games. I’ve always used the strategy by taking the fight to Jason outside.
Strong strategy my friend. Thanks for taking time to comment.
Love this game got it for Easter !! As a child !
Thanks man. I love both of them too. LJN gets undeserved hate. They didn't even develop their games lol
Something I thought about when you were discussing the color palette choice for Jason in the NES game is that the color purple in Japan is commonly associated with death, which may explain why Jason was purple pre-NES to begin with.
Wow! I like the death color theory Scott. Great observation
Wow! I like the death color theory Scott. Great observation
Recent subscriber, just had to after I saw the Flyin' WV on your hat! LET'S GO MOUNTAINEERS!
After 32 years I finally beat this game! Thank you!
Awesome 😎. Glad you finally beat it Jeff
around 13:00 I started thinking “why would anyone bother. There’s so many steps”
I just want to mention 1 thing. If you eat an apple before doing your voiceover work, you can eliminate all the wet mouth sounds and lip smacking. I have no idea why it works but it does. I used to record dialog for video games and it works like a charm everytime.
Thanks Matt
This is absolutely awesome me and my little sister would play this for hours and when he popped out on the road she would scream, we always found notes and had some sort of idea how to grab the torch. We only got to kill him twice and that was once, dodging with nes controller was hard! I still have this game, the system, and a floor tv from the era, nice tips to kill him, I actually just put a cheat code in an emulator several years back and wiped him out the unfair way haha. Dude the video of the rental stores was priceless we used to rent all the movies and the game before I finally purchased it, also got the nightmare on elm street nes game, there was also a pc version for a 286 with no sound card haha!
jesus christ 7:45 i jumped out of my chair when pennywise popped up! lmao
The only game I still have the manual, box and foam for. This game scared the fuck outta me as a kid as I played it downstairs in an off room with the lights off. So easy to beat now but it was tough as a kid!
Jason looks like a custodian in this game.
Laura can run just as fast as Mark or Crissy, she just can't jump. She's a great backup if Mark or Crissy bite the dust.
Jeez, I was like 5 or 6 trying to play this game... where was my adult supervision lol.
Looking back, I wasn't so terrible at this game, and I learned a lot from this video!
Played it once and I was done. Nightmare on Elmstreet was my jam!
Well done! I thought this was an underrated game
Thanks Justin!
Yeah, LJN published Punisher for the NES and It is an amazing game !!
I wish this was a history class in school.. I probably would've paid attention!!!
They chose those colors for Jason because when he was in a dark cabin they made the most sense.
I actually enjoyed this game way back in the day when it was released!
I'm new here, but you sir have gained yourself a subscriber / regular viewer
I remember getting the torch by lighting all the fire places only thing was one counselor one torch and if you pass or loose it you don't get another.
I remember renting this game back in the day but it had no manual so I never figured out how to play it lol
One of the few games I owned but never beat. Still enjoyed the hell out it !!
Great video, amazing insight. You legend.
i enjoyed this game a lot as a kid.....yes i played it every single time via game genie....but there are just so many nes games i enjoyed so much more via game genie, made it fun imo :)
