- Ilanit performing "Ahava Hi Shir Lishnayim" ("Love Is a Song for Two"), the Israeli entry at the 1977 Eurovision Song Contest.
After representing her country for its debut entry in 1973 (which got a richly deserved 4th place), Ilanit, Israel's hottest star in the 70s, returned to the contest with another small gem, a marvellous ballad of true quality which she performs absolutely flawlessly. Unfortunately, the juries weren't so kind with her this time, and Israel just missed out a place in that year's top-10, finishing in 11th place (maybe those creepy-looking backing vocalists had sth to do with this! :-P).

I remember now, I was a little boy aged 12, at home in Wimbledon, watching the preview videos on BBC 1, a few days before the Eurovision Song Contest of 1977, together with my mother and my sister. This song made an unforgettable impression on all of us. We couldn't understand the words, so we just called it "Ken, Ken, we SHALL meet again !"

The backing singers were BBC singers so did not know any Hebrew at all. They were given the lyrics to learn earlier in the day so it's no surprise they weren't perfect.
Having said that it is still my absolute favourite of 1977 (which is a very strong year) and also my favourite Israeli entry. Wonderful!!!
A beautiful song and a fabulous singer Ilanit! The backing singers are very good, just need more coaching in the Hebrew . In those days everything was put together at the the last minute and flying backing singers in from Israel might have been considered too expensive i suppose.

Άλλο ένα αδικημένο τραγούδι στo Διαγωνισμό της Eurovision. Μια αξιοπρεπέστατη σκηνική παρουσία , δυνατή ερμηνεία και προχωρημένη - για την εποχή του - ενορχήστρωση. Είναι σχεδόν βέβαιον πως εάν το τραγούδι ακουγόταν στα Αγγλικά ή έστω μισό Αγγλικά - μισό Εβραϊκά θα είχε πολύ καλύτερη βαθμολογική τύχη και θέση. Με πολύ σεβασμό από την Αθήνα. Μετάφραση / Translation : Another wronged song in the Eurovision Contest. A dignified stage presence, strong performance and advanced - for his time - orchestration. It is almost certain that if the song sounded in English or even half English - half Hebrew it would have much better grading luck and position. With a lot of respect from Athens.
Back then Israel didn't use any English. First song to have any English was in 1993. Wish it was still the case. Ever sense 2015, all of Israel's song are entirely in English and just sound so blend, just like all the other songs.

And I, Friend, am in favor of lyrics in the Mother-National language of each State. Much more so for Nations such as the Israelite and the Greek which are ancient. Unfortunately, we are now in a Multicultural Globalization environment, so let it be half of the national language, half of English. Yahweh bless you.

Now here you have a recipe for a perfect song and lovely singer, totally unlike the type the ESC puts out today where emphasis is laid on visual representation. I am aware of changing musical taste but honestly, I can´t remember any ESC song from the past 2 decades that I can hum to no matter what the language.
+michael brandt Agree totally. This is a beautifully sung classic ballad from a time when Eurovision was purely and simply a song contest. I love this song and listen to it often.
I wonder if people who comment like that even have listened to most of the songs of the last two decades.
Musical taste changes with the time and you can't send chansons like this one nowadays to the competition.

02:18 shows clearlly that backgrouand singers doesn't know Hebrew. I can;t explain that! To Hebrew speakers, you can hear a hard foreign accent, like Douch or something simillar. The right woman even sings "Ahava (love) he shir LIPNAYI"!!! instead of LISHNAYIM.
They just don't know Hebrew, beleave me. They even doesn't have an Israeli look!
