For Hoya trellises- I took apart two wire hangers and wrapped them in twine then stuck it in the soil to make an arch. It looks pretty and took like 4 minutes to make 🙌
Girl we really need to get on a schedule because I literally just trellised my big guy yesterday. Then you release a video "how to". It's like the moving advice all over again. 😂
A month or two ago I bought a huge and old Hoya Carnosa on a makeshift trellis from fb marketplace, and I had to re-trellis it. It was so much work, and some of the older stems are so thick and woody that it was really hard to bend around!! I think I just needed to vent about that because no one in my life cares about Hoyas lol.
I’ve only named 2 plants, one is a Boston fern called Bob, named after Sideshow Bob because they have the same hair. The other one is a philodendron called Phil Collins
You're a delight! So much to learn but joyful and entertaining at the same time. I don't name my plants or give them genders but I love them to bits and constantly touch them (and talk to them). That's my thing! ☺️
Hoya my gosh. Two Betsy videos in two days. Yay! Thanks for both. You always make me giggle like a school girl and I love it. Much love and many blessings.
speaking of your really tidy apartment....i'd love to see how you've styled your new space with plants! what i see in the background is always very cool
Betsy, you kill me with your humorous personality! You are just a complete gem to watch. Whenever I'm feeling down and out, I pull up some of your videos! Thank you!
Hi Betsy! So happy to see another video from you! I bought some green wire to make trellis' for a couple of my Hoyas and pothos. I haven't attempted it yet, but will soon. I'm like you, I prefer a trellis that doesn't have all of the sharp edges. I have a lot of the little clips that come with orchids that I plan on using, similar to the first one you used. You are always so much fun to watch. You always make me laugh and you put a smile on my face and that's a good thing! 👍 👌 👏 Thank you for sharing!
Getting two videos from you in one week feels wonderfully decadent and I am enjoying every minute. I don't even have a single hoya to trellis yet this is my second time watching.
Wow! Those cuttings have gotten so big and beautiful!! My carnosa cascades beautifully over it's planter... BUT, there is one vine, just one single vine, that reaches and grabs all over the place. I had to rescue a nearby ZZ plant from almost being strangled! Since then I've been going back and forth about trellising - don't really like the look but that vine may kill someone one day if I don't do something about it, LOL!
I'm new to hoyas. I have four that I'm gathering info on so this video will be helpful when they get a little bigger. I also prefer them to trail but it's nice to have options. I call my plants 'she' if they produce flowers and 'he' if they don't. I always look forward to your videos!
With my Hoya fungii (that you identified) I had the same problem with having a too-small trellis. So I got some gardening wire and created a loop and trellised it that way. You would not believe the growth I’ve had on it since. It’s put out at least ten new leaves - and it’s winter here! So it obviously loves climbing.
I was wondering why the tips of my hoya vines were dying! I’ve been abusing them haha. Thank you for sharing that, I thought that because the stems were thick, they could handle my rough housing. Apparently not 😬 woops. So glad you’re back, Betsy!
totally not plant related but vacuum related. GET A ROOMBA best decision of my life. i have two cats and there is always litter everywhere. the roomba helps tremendously
Thank you for demonstrating how to insert trellises. I have found that many trellises are designed to be able to insert one into another for added height. If there are holes in the top of your trellis, you might find that you can insert the two feet of one into the top of another. Hope it works for you. Thanks again.
You really should do voice overs on TV. You are so funny. I stumbled on your channel. I inherited 2 Hoyas from my in laws. Learning how to care for them.
Lol! love you Betsy, I always enjoy your channel and your humor, it just makes my day. I call some of my plants he and some she, I don't have names for all of them because I have way too many to name them, haha. Some get called he based on the personality they exibit, the diva ones are sometimes she, but I do have a diva he plant, haha again. I love how our plants each have personalities, and we just know how to talk to them, and yes I talk to my plants, some people may think that I have totally gone over the deep end, but they like it when I talk to them, and I love my plants, so who cares if they think I'm bonkers. I have an older Hoya that could use a large bamboo trellis, and I might just do that soon, but then I have to relocate her and that will take some thought. But thanks Betsy for this video it was fun and made me giggle. Take care and I will see you soon.
Love this. It's like drunk stories but with Hoyas. Can you think about something better while u drinking ur rosé? I don't. C est trop un plaisir de te voir "repoter"! ❤️
i find it interesting that youtubers with deykeae living in the west (and i presume cooler weather) has lighter colouration in leaves, looks longer and prominent veinings. i live in the tropics and 70+% humidity, and my deykeae leaves look thicker, deeper colouration and more broad than long!
So this is like my 3rd time watching this video, just because, but it's the 1st time I caught the Julie Nicole reference! Fantastic!😂 Yes! Clean house goals. But, with 2 kids, a dog, and far too many plants it's a battle!
I rescue purchased two hoyas, i think a pubicalyx splash and an australis (they had no tags) from a local grocery store that were overgrown onto this hoop trellis, so i untangled them from the trellises and trimmed some of the woodier stems that had some damage from being bent onto the trellis. The potting medium they came in is very dense and overwatered and I am trying to decide if I should repot right away or give it some time to recover from being untangled and pruned. Any thoughts would be very helpful!
Betsy I need your help 😭 my Hoya Bella's leaves have started yellowing on the edges of the leaves, particularly towards the end of each stem (even on the shorter stems). It's sat at a North facing window with Western light also coming from a frosted glass door. The leaves feel firm so they're not underwatered and it's putting out lots of healthy looking growth and is still blooming (although some flowers fall off easily if it's moved). I dunno what's wrong 😭
No, not necessarily. But you never know when there could be something lurking in it that's microscopic which you cannot see. Or if old roots get torn up in it and rot, etc. There's a lot going on in there!
All of my plants are referred to as "this guy" for the time being 😅 I'm a new plant parent so I haven't decided on specific genders for specific plants... one day! P.S. I cannot tell you how big I smiled when I saw the thumbnail 😁 I just knew it was gonna be a great video lol!
I choose my plants genders sometimes lol! I love your French accent, when you speak French! It's fascinating! Personally I don't like the north east accents in the US. Idk why. It bothers me haha! You're seriously so entertaining. And educating! I love watching your videos!!
Cute video! I’m considering buying a floor to ceiling trellis that’s a couple feet wide to put on the wall next to my large window. I think it would be fun to have pothos or philos filling it out. Any vining plant really. I’ve considered jasmine also, but pothos/scindapsus are my jam.
You drink wine, talk with your hands and enthusiastic n loud. Girl, Are you Portuguese??? Lol I love your different voices and your plants. Thanks for this video, Super easy. I need to hop on this bandwagon since my Pothos are crying happy trails. Thanks for the tips 😚🌱👏👑
Do you have to make sure the growth tip has to point upwards? Or do you point it to be above the level of the plant itself? Do those things matter for the plants?
Hey Betsy! Your Hoya soil mixture contains only peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark? Any actual soil? A video showing which products you use and how you mix it would be super cool! Just an idea. Love your videos and glad you're back!!
Personnellement, je les appelles toutes mes belles filles vertes! Thank you for the informative video, I was just thinking to transfer my baby shepherdii that is vining like crazy, but her long leaves make me hesitate on the treillis shape, what would you think? Would you leave it pending or putting on a treillis? Thank you for your advice! Warm hello from Montreal!
I usually just gently unwrap them or, in the case of my Hoya bella which was REEEEAAALLLY tightly wound around a trellis which I purchased it, I cut the trellis with wire clippers and then untangled it. Or you can simply buy a large trellis that's the size you eventually want your plant to stop at and your plant will grow into it.
Sounds like low humidity, not enough water, or direct sun. They need very high humidity to prevent leaf tips from going brown and prefer bright but indirect light.
Hey Betsy, loved the video. Would you trellace an epipremnum or a philodendron the same way? And what colour is your sofa? It looks different in every video!
When I repot my plants into a larger pot, they keep all their soil. I rarely discard soil and I never sterilize it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if your plants are healthy, it’s not a problem. A compost or worm castings topping will feed the plant just fine.
This vid was a year ago so I’m sure this is going to be old news but you can buy another trellis like you have here and add it to the fungii trellis to make it taller.
Betsy I have a Hoya question! I got a pubicalyx online. It only had two vines and both of them had baby leaves growing when I got it. Within a week the new leaves fell off 😢 will it grow new ones? When you said that if the tip of the vine dies it will never grow I panicked! Mine is just the two vines! They don’t look dead they just dropped them babies.
When you buy them online they sometime have been growing in different conditions than you have. They need some time to adjust. The leaves wont grow back but there will be new ones on the vines as they grow. If the tips die the plant will put out new ones. H. pubicalyx in my opinion is very forgiving and easy to grow so will suerly get a nice plant when it gets going.
I'm a recent subscriber and I have to say you are a treasure. I really enjoy your videos. To answer your question, I seem to call almost all of my plants "he" by default, except for very certain ones like my hoya carnosa and peperomia and bromeliad aechmea etc. Basically the cute ones get called "she" instead haha If you find a trellis you like better later on, do you think it'll be difficult to change it? I picture the trellises being basically permanent because I'm afraid it'll get too wrapped around.
Hi Betsy! I’ve been wanting to trellis my pubicalyx, his vines are outta control. (I guess I consider my plants boys) lol. Anyway, most of his vines have wrapped themselves around each other. Should I untwist them? Thanks for another awesome video! We’ve missed u ❤️
Thank you Betsy! I potted up a Hoya Carnosa with a long vine. I went looking for small trellises. Nope, no luck. I wound up making one out of popsicle sticks. Kindergarten Art project. LOL! Doug Chamberlain uses small fencing and forms them in the shape of the pot. He cuts the bottom part off, so it has spikes to go into the soil. He also cuts the side and uses the spikes to attach the ends together. I am going to moss pole a Golden Pothos. I am thinking of using a pool noodle with a small PVC pipe in the middle and further into the soil. I could use floral pins to attach the vines. What do you think? I bought 2 more Pothos I have never seen in person. Monday I bought a Cebu Blue and today a Neon Pothos. Both were at Lowe's, gorgeous and healthy. Enjoy! Gerry 😎
Thanks! I have all the material. I have 2 long vines I will pin up and 12 cuttings I am propagating in water. When they are ready, I will pot and pole them. 😎
Most of my plants are gender neutral as well, except the Ficus Tineke that is definitely a "he". I call him "the Sergent" because the leaves look like camo, but I've been known to give him higher or lowel grades according to my mood and/or how well he behaves! Trial a trellis won’t you! Ha ha! Thanks!

My plants have different genders based on their individual personality.
Also, incidentally, I was literally purchasing a new begonia as the notification for this came in, they're beautiful.
Agreed! And it's very specific--like an instinct. You know it's a he/she when you see it!
I totally agree, should be interesting to know the predominant "gender" of some popular houseplants for people. Btw my orchids are gender fluid.

Do those trellis' extend? Sometimes you can just add another trellis on top to make it taller.

You are too funny! I also need to trellis some Hoyas, but what happens when they outgrow the trellis?
I usually just gently unwrap them or, in the case of my Hoya bella which was REEEEAAALLLY tightly wound around a trellis which I purchased it, I cut the trellis with wire clippers and then untangled it. Or you can simply buy a large trellis that's the size you eventually want your plant to stop at and your plant will grow into it.

I use bamboo sticks for my Hoya australis.

Betsy, can you please show us all your Hoyas. Best regards from Stockholm Sweden
Help! I’m getting brown dry spots on my begonia leaves..
Sounds like low humidity, not enough water, or direct sun. They need very high humidity to prevent leaf tips from going brown and prefer bright but indirect light.
Well it’s not direct sun cause it’s north facingand I’m giving water property I think. How do you create high humidity for these?
Hey where did you purchase your trellis?
From a local garden center in Lille, France.
What kind of camera do you use to film? Love you so much!
I'm currently using a Canon PowerShot G7X Mark II.
Hey Betsy, loved the video. Would you trellace an epipremnum or a philodendron the same way? And what colour is your sofa? It looks different in every video!
The color is "bleu canard" in French and "petrol" in English. I found it at Made.com. It's called the Scott sofa.
Stay amazing and hilarious! Thank you for sharing 🌸
I might be wrong but it looked like those trellis could be attached. Like a top one could go into the bottom to make it taller.
Yep, discovered later, added more. Still hate the way they look. 😂
Are there any benefits to trellising hoyas? I know that in pothos that the leaves get bigger and potentially frenestrations in the case of cebu blue.
Some seem to do better and produce more foliage when they have something to vine on, IMO.
When I repot my plants into a larger pot, they keep all their soil. I rarely discard soil and I never sterilize it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if your plants are healthy, it’s not a problem. A compost or worm castings topping will feed the plant just fine.

I like the round ones. I'll probably order some from Plantanica.
Since they tend to bloom I call them Girls, Senoritas, lindas. But then Cacti since they are prickly I call them boy, dude, etc.
I mostly think of my plants as she as they have babies. X
I need to trellis my Hoya Rubra and a green unlabeled Hoya.
How did you end up in France?
I have talked about it in a couple Q&As. 🙂
Two seconds into the video and I'm already laughing 😂👍
And yes I give genders to my plants too.
I randomly choose their gender too 🤣🤣
Not sure if you should talk to them either, but I do. A lot.
that was a pretty good rhode island accent
