Codex from The Brunei Maritime Museum describing Sultan Bolkiah’s Escorting War Ships. He reigned from 1485 to 1524.
“... the whole of the vessel was covered by a strong, flat roof where the fighters stood... Principal weapons
were the Keris, a traditional malay dagger and spear, both of which, to be used with full effect, require elbow room. The vessel was also equipped with three cannons at the bow and another two at the sides.”

OH SNAP!~ In Malaysia and Singapore, I've been to plenty of museums with dedicated areas about Bruneian/Indonesian/Malay archipelago cultures' weaponry, but NEVER heard anything along this thread. The Keris have been well known for decade and have amassed a pretty sizable international following.
But I believe this is the first time the international audience actually find out how its actually used.
I actually find it interesting most didnt realize the sheath is a weapon. The shape is so obvious ;) but apparently not lol

I've been curious for a long time regarding the usage of keris in silat, but so far I've only seen choreographed demonstrations with lots of jumping and acrobatic maneuvers - this is my first time seeing a clear and practical demonstration!

What a devastating weapon!! I love how he explains the cultural/historical aspects of the weapon. Unlike the Kukri, the Keris seems to have no other application than killing.
Yeah, cheap poison you can apply to small bladed weapons like those basically just stick it to dead rat and let it rot for a few days. If you can withstand the smell tho.

Kukri is more of a multipurpose blade for daily use which can be used as a weapon of self defense. So, I think it's fairer to compare that to golok or parang instead of keris.
It's carried around by panglimas and hulubalangs meaning warriors and military leaders n not really carried around by normal ppl in the olden days. Unless they are real warriors. But that doesn't mean the general populace are unarmed, the normal ppl carry around parangs and goloks (machetes). Yes it's purpose is solely to kill, not for utility. Even the way it's gripped is catered around how a silat practitioner can just slot the keris in n it becomes an extension of himself to be more efficient at killing. This weapon is one of the most feared alongst the stealthy kerambit bcos bearers are usually highly trained at killing

The body mechanics and thought put into all of the curves and particular shapes of the keris really highlight the knowledge of no nonsense brutal fighting when needed

I am shocked speechless in awe. That sheathe is AMAZING! That unprepped demonstrator was most kind.
I love these demos.
So basically it's a mechanical+non-main unarmed opportunists sidearm weapon setup not a real warfare weapon circumvents combat and more like a ninja/assassins non-combat evasive handling weapon. But you would have had to turn more aggressive as a result of the short range to cut off attacks. One heavy bladebreak would leave you defenceless+multiple attackers would be difficult. Poison is efficient for cheap indefensible things, well-armoured opponents is where the spear comes in i guess? I would love to see those too. I read stiletto daggers were useful vs. chainmail types to pierce links. These ones would not pierce constructs so well I'm guessing, but very biologically smart.

Huh. I've always wondered why my dad's keris isn't a homogeneous springsteel. It looks like it has alternating bands of black and white that resemble a boxcutter's segmented blade.
Never knew a keris blade could be broken off inside an enemy.
True, yes. Not all keris though there are variations. But the most well-made and the most devious have very "flimsy" edges, more like miniature spikes along the blade that are meant to break off.
Theres a reason why the Keris is the penultimate Warrior weapon in the Nusantara region. It is almost over-engineered.

This particular Keris is quite different than the traditional Javanese ones arent they? Techniques and movement should be different aswell i reckon.
Design is totally different. Indonesian keris, most Indonesians will say its for ceremonial and symbolic purposes and not as a weapon, Brunei uses it as a weapon as written in historical manuscript.
@@Maul565 that's true, most of them use it for ceremonial purposes. Though ive seen People apply techniques to the Javanese one, it is quite rare to encounter.
@F R true....keris or Kris was one of the weapon not only on Java's culture but on Bali either. It's combined with pedang(sword) or tombak(spear).. as u see in Kali Majapahit martial art as the example the name of Majapahit are taken from Javanese ancient empire (i'm sorry my English so bad🙏🙏)

Lot of Knowledge ! I would have love to train with you. What's the name of your Silat ? I find it very efficient and "Straight to the Point". I Trained many years in Paris, "Setia Hati Terate" with Pendekar Charles Joussot (Lineage of Bapak Hadjorno Turpijn); and in London with Pendekar Steven Benitez ( "Silat Wali Songo" now "Satria Arts", and "Cimande"). Wa Slm.

Bapak Turpijn was a great street fighter and one of the bapaks who brought the art from Indonesia to the Netherlands and Europe.
@Maul565 Would you at some time in the future do a video on how to use Silat against typical MMA / wrestling/grappling style?
I think he already does most of it is logical+practical speed striking+grappling when you go into pure grappling or striking you probably outspecialise.
MMA is a sports with rules. Silat is a form of martial art with killing mechanics. If you bring a karambit or sai or kriss to fight MMA guy, he will be complaining about fairness. If I were a silat practitioner against grappler in the street, I will straight up cut his neck's vein with karambit once he comes close to me. I hope you get the picture.
AFAIK Silat had its own tecnic against tackle since silat has it aswell (tackel).
Note: silat always has it hands close to ribs at least 1 on them
So when you being tackle...get an underhook at one of his arm while u stepping back to outside. Then push him to the side or you can get an one hand kimura (u know kimura ?)

Yep, and that kind of parry also double as an attack. It's defense and offence in one move.

Ofcourse it can be disarmed, every weapon can be disarmed, dependant on circumstances, timing, skill, etc, some weapons are designed so that its not easily disarmed.

If you made it of glass, I would understand, but steel? It would be a terrible waste of countless work hours...
It not meant to be efficient. And it can be considering a goods back than. Only pride fighter may have it. Not normal people. And it was from decade ago, glass techonolgy is not that high, steel can easily bends into curve like that. But glass is not.
@@yansaster4951 in Renaissance Europe glass daggers were used and they were intended to break off. Plus, they are sharper than any steel blade!
@@edi9892 i dont know are you joking or serious. Either i cant find glass dagger on google. Only glass knive and it need some micromachining. And avail in 1960s. I dont know are you understand properties of glass. And glass forming. But steel tech is already high even in medieval era.
I dont know in video games. Glass dagger i search only from frictional world. Addaptate from skyrim. And this type sword mainly is not for only break. It still need to use to swordfight, if it made from glass. It will easily lose even from log wood.
@@yansaster4951 glass is harder than steel, but too brittle to make any sword out of it. I bet the same would apply for diamond swords.
Glass in the form of obsidian has been used for ages as dagger- and arrowhead material. Hardened glass is even better.

Actually, just a splinter sized metal from the uneven surface of the kriss will stuck in the body, not the actual blade
He was referring to miniature flimsy "spikes" along the blade, its too small for the camera to pick up,
Those spikes are usually laced with poison and designed to break off, regardless if its slicing, stabbing or cutting, leaving the poisoned bits inside the wound.

People's movements and migration are far more fluid in SE-Asia in the past, having worked and befriended many Malays over the years, I understood their perspectives of "Malay" is very different than how some indonesians may see it.
They view "Malay" as a more fluid and interchangeable term, more as a regional term that defines the entire Nusantara region rather than a strictly "tribal" categorization. From their understanding, that term is technically correct. Just as "European" accurately describes a German, French and English.
You also do realize there are millions of Javanese, Bugis, Boyanese and Minangkabaus in Malaysia, right? They all regard themselves as belonging in the "Malay" group, in Malaysia, thats actually codified in their legislation as Bumiputeras (sons of the land).
So do you really want to stay bickering over "origin this origin that" over a Bruneian guy who is actually doing something honorable and promoting interest over the beautiful Keris to an international audience?
