- February 12, 1862 - Don Bosco narrated the following incident:
"The night of the 6th or 7th of this month, I had just gone to bed and was about to doze off, when I was seized by the shoulders and vigorously shaken. I was terrified! 'Who are you?' I cried. I lit the lamp and looked under the bed and in every corner of the room. Nothing! I tried the door; it was closed. I checked the door leading into the library; it was closed too. So I went back to bed. I had hardly dozed off when mother jolt thoroughly frightened me. I wanted to ring for Rossi or Reano, but then I decided I had better not disturb them. Lying on my back, I tried to sleep. Abruptly, I felt a crushing weight on my stomach and could not breathe. I had to cry out, 'What is it?' I struck out with my fist and met only air. I turned over on my stomach, but that didn't help. All in all, it was a horrible night. The next evening, I blessed the bed before going to sleep, but it did no good. I went through the same ordeal for the following four or five nights. I wonder what will happen tonight!"

I think he may offered up some extreme form of prayer and fasting to make the devil leave the Oratory entirely and was too humble to say what his sacrifice was (the coffee incident brought this to mind). Perhaps... but he could've tried so many things, like asking Mary herself to come down and handle it. He'd seen her many times, so that's a very plausible solution. If I ever come across an explanation of this incident in the 20 volumes, I'll let you all know.

I had gone to a retreat recently and the first night I wasn't getting sleep and had anxiety, even though I was extremely tired. Anxiety happens to me in a new place but I had learned to manage it over time (being a therapist).
That night it was really bad and finally I saw some black figure when my eyes were open and looking at the ceiling. I kept opening and closing my eyes to see if it was a hallucination or my imagination (and I wished it was). Mind you, I've had 3 to 4 sleepless nights in the past but never once seen anything like this. Also the whole feeling of fear engulfing me and feeling cold. None of my roomies felt cold there. Some felt hot.
The whole night I was praying many prayers and trying to sing different hymns but nothing was working. And my mom also says never pray out of fear.
I was so scared to even move a bit so it was difficult to not have fear. The others in my room were fast asleep, one person even snoring. I wanted to run away and tell the priest concerned that I cannot continue this retreat. I was safe at home and now I'm at this place, never ever dabbled in anything wrong or bad, receive the Sacraments, so it has to be this place.
In the night, at one point of completely giving up, I said to God, 'is he going to kill me today? Because if he is, then you please take me.'
At some later point I remembered watching some religious on UA-cam saying you can exorcise yourself in Jesus name. So I closed my eyes, completely tired and fed up with no where to go, nothing else to do, exhausted with the lack of sleep, head heavy with fear and anxiety and giving up, I kept my hand on my heart and said, 'in Jesus name I command you to leave me'.
It left. It stopped. I opened and closed my eyes a few times to see if it was really gone or my imagination but it was gone and never came back.
The next night I recited and slept with the Blessed St. Benedict medal Dominican Rosary they gave us. I never woke once and directly woke 5 mins before someone else's alarm could ring and my Guardian Angel was like it's time to get up, and after a few mins, someone's alarm rang :)
Pray the Chaplet of St. Michael daily. It’s very fortifying and you’ll see a difference.
List all the great saints harassed by diabolical influences. The holier they were, the worst they were bothered.
Yes the Rosary will make him flee as well as the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. We also as Baptized Catholics (in God’s Grace-no mortal sin) can command evil spirits in Jesus’ Name with CONFIDENCE in Our Lord and His Holy Name. Say “i command in Jesus’ Name by virtue of His Most Precious Blood through the intercession of Our Lady (of Good Success is what I was told to say by Mom-Our Blessed Mother) I command the spirit of ….( name it like the spirit of fear, anger, depression, etc anything that is not of God) to be gone! Take your place at the foot of the Cross to receive your sentence from Our Lord Jesus Christ!” Then wait and distract yourself from the temptation or whatever by praying or working. Before you know it your peace from the Holy Spirit will be renewed. If it lingers Jesus is allowing it for you to receive a greater Grace and/or learn something. Do NOT FEAR. God and Our Lady are with you! Ask Our Lady of Sorrows to clarify what you need to learn and the Grace not to give into the temptation
Interesting and curious! I would like to know what did St John Bosco to get rid from these attacks.
They do always the same: sacraments, fasting, prayers like rosary, offering undergone hardships to God or Mary, becoming humble, spreading love and kindness.
Some saints did nothing to stop them and would accept them and offer those sufferings them to the Lord. Saint Padre Pio didn't do anything. It would happen a lot and loudly enough that other friars would hear the attacks. But Padre Pio would sometimes apologize for the noise and that's that.
If God permits the attacks, we can always ask to be freed from them. But if they continue, maybe God wanrs us to endure. In the suffering to bring us closer to Him.

Imho he called upon Mary, as she is most feared and gated by the enemy.

This wretched Sinner prays, The Golden Arrow, St. Michael, The Divine Mercy prayers which are some of my daily prayers upon rising and Saluting Almighty God, (The Holy Trinity) Our Most Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God and God's Heavenly Host. GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO, AVE MARIA, GRATIA PLENA, DOMINUS TECUM.
The devil used to bother me at night in 2010 l couldn't sleep he would bit me up until l started wearing my weapon the rosary
