  • The 2 dollar bill and the half dollar coin may not be worth the same amount, but they have many similarities. We put them head-to-head in this video, where you'll also learn some numismatics like the different types of $2 bills as well as the many half dollar coins, like Kennedy half dollars, Franklin half dollars, and other silver half dollars. Is the bicentennial worth anything? Pull out your couch collectibles and find out which kennedy half dollars to look for, and what are some valuable half dollars.

    I've spent half dollars in a few places, I remember one time the girl behind the counter was struggling to figure out where to put them in the register she then turned to another employee and said "you're taking the next customer I can't do this sh*t"

    $2 bills are somewhat easy to find while most banks do not have half dollar coins available, you have to order them by the box which is $500 worth. I have a bunch of $2s at the moment, I went to a bank a few weeks ago and they had $400 worth on hand and I bought them all, then I went back to the same bank and got another $160 worth, all brand new. I have a few half dollar coins in my safe, I keep them in a pouch with my Susan B. Anthony coins. I spend the $2 bills, use them for tips but I have never tried spending half dollar coins anywhere.

    50¢ pieces were really easy to get at Casinos, until most converted to the paper ticket payouts for Slot Machines. Whenever I needed some half dollars, I would put a $20 in a 50¢ machine, hit the cash out button & I'd have 40 of them for daily use

    I worked as a cashier at a gas station and of the two I would say I saw $2 bills more often than half dollars. I remember someone spent a Eisenhower dollar coin. If you can find a 1964 half dollar they are 90% silver making them worth much more than 50 cents

    Great video!! I love the Two’s! I’ve made some people happy to spend the twos. Yesterday, I paid some snacks with twos and a lady wanted to buy the $8.00 of twos.. I still carry $50.00 worth of crisp new twos! A bank in Waxahachie had $200 in twos!! I don’t like or spend half dollars is, no local vending machines accept them! Even in my area, I can’t use twos on vending machines either. 🥺😳😥😭😢☹️ That’s ok! I’m spending two’s as fast as I can get more! Shabbat Shalom y’all!! I still have the vintage 2013 two’s! Always a handful of twos and dollar coins, but half-dollars less frequently. I live in Wallace, Idaho, a little town up in the panhandle. Interestingly, I recently found out that our credit union the next town over keeps straps of twos and rolls of half-dollars and dollar coins in their vault. Kind of surprising, considering this is a rural area and there can't be much of a demand. But I don't often have $200 on hand to trade in for a strap, and the thrill of seeing what the Wallace bank has on hand every week is kind of fun.

      Thanks for the compliments on the film! It is interesting that there are banks with so many twos in your area; as you say, it's kind of an odd place for a bank to be stocking that many. But it only takes a few people like you to regularly request them for the bank to have them on hand (just like Matt Zaklad in the film, if you remember him). Always glad to meet fellow $2 bill users. If you like them as you say you do, I'm sure you enjoyed the film as you said. That connection the film speaks of is real. :)

    The $2 bill wins hands down. It's easy to carry, it's beautiful, it has the most interesting reverse design of all modern currency. With all due respect to JFK (personal hero of mine as a child) the Kennedy Half is the most undesirable coin out there (except the Sac dollar). In fact, when I get one in change I'm pretty disappointed and it goes right in the change jar to be presented at a Coinstar machine in the future.

    Hello again. I just want to tell you I've been a regular user of twos for the past year now. There are some cashiers who regard me as a bit weird and I understand their discomfort because there's no assigned slot for them in the register and I hate it when they put the twos under the till. Even at the post office, where there's a sign openly saying "small bills appreciated" at the counter, this is still the case.
    Anyway, I see your documentary briefly touches upon the history of the half dollar. Do you agree for a coin that's supposedly intended for circulation, it is greatly overweight and oversized? I strongly do. You know, I sent a message twice to my elected representative urging her to create legislation to make it smaller in the hope if this comes to pass, people will be (finally) willing to use some circulating coin that has higher face value than a quarter. Never got a response back.

      I doubt our government is going to start re-making coins. Their value is too small as inflation rises. I do agree that the coin is too bulky for common use, and that's probably why it has suffered the fate it has. The $2 bill on the other hand, is a perfect bill for inflation because there's not much you can get for a dollar anymore. I am glad to hear you use them! Keep it up. I would just say, don't waste your time writing our government to change anything. I'm not surprised you didn't get a response.

      @@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary Did you do the Eisenhower dollars yet?

  • @thomasj.cikalo8497
    @thomasj.cikalo8497 4 роки тому

    The question is, after the Bicentennial issue, why did the pennies, nickels and dimes not have a special Bicentennial design? And more importantly to me, Why did the Bicentennial quarters, halves and Eisenhower $1 coins go back to their eagle reverse after 1976, while the $2 bill did "not" go back to the Monticello reverse for it's next printing in 1995, with Series 1995? That would've been awesome, and made more sense, seeing as, all other current denominations have buildings on the back of them, except for the $1 bill, and although I was always told the $1 and $2 bills were indeed included in the currency redesign program, starting in 1996 with the $100 bill, they later dropped the plan to pursue the redesign of the $1 bill, due to the vending lobby arguing against costs up to $500 million dollars in reprogramming machines to accept a new design $1 bill, and scrapping out and replacing machines that were too old to have a reprogramming feature. This was what was stated in the final article about the possible redesign of the $1 and $2 bills, when the first redesigned $5 and $10 bills were issued in 2000:
    "No final decisions have been made on the possible redesign of the $2 and $1 Federal Reserve notes. There is a multi-year supply of $2's available, and Congress currently opposes redesigning the $1"
    I remember those words in a redesign article from 20 years ago, like it were yesterday. After that, as far as I know it, there were no more mentioning redesigns of the $1 and $2 bills, even though from 1996-1999 or so, I'd regularly write the BEP and they told me that they had planned to redesign the $1 and $2 bills, and although the vending lobby was the reason to put a stop to the $1 bill redesign, I get the idea that, because it did not have a building on it anymore, that that was one of the main reasons thy also dropped the plans to redesign the $2 bill. I somehow get the idea that the $2 bill would've more likely been redesigned, had it still had the Monticello reverse. And no, not redesigning the $1 and $2 bills had nothing to do with them not needing security features, as it was always mentioned that the $1 bill would be "more modestly redesigned" in many of the currency redesign articles I kept up with, and I associated with a dollar coin lobby group, the Coin Coalition, which told me that the vending industry did not want the $1 bill touched as far as the redesign went, but agreed that the $2 bill should be redesigned. In fact, there was a bill proposed around 2002, by Rep. Jim Kolbe, a huge dollar coin supporter, to release five new $2 bills over five years with five different reverses, and a modernized obverse. So, before you go chiming in, claiming that the $2 bill does not need to be redesigned to look like the larger denominations, $2 Bill Documentary, let me just say that there are others out there, who beg to differ.

      I would say it’s a wheel of fortune factor. Most Texas banks in my area don’t love the two’s like I do, and there are a lot of two’s hoarders I’m dealing with. I got blessed one day in one town and some another person buys to hoarding. Hoarding two’s is my issue but I persevere. I’ll hoard the red seals, and spend the green seals!! I have to drive about 200+ miles in any direction! But banks that DO have two’s has a 50/50 chance I need an account just to buy the two’s! Banks are weird like that. Gatesville bank inside the Walmart, still refuses to order, or get me two’s, so I drive to other towns. It’s a low 50/50 shot. Chase bank in Walmart store sold me $60 bucks. 7 months ago. The attitude confirms what your channel says.. They think the two is a rare collectible currency that grows in value. They that hoard them, might have thousands of tens of thousands stored in a box hidden away and forgotten, believing they will be worth more. But still worth two dollars. I get 50/50 reactions between “oh how cool!” to the “it’s counterfeit, and they call a manager.” It’s still hard to get. Yet I’m grateful to G-d this channel understand what I am going through! In non-related conversation, I do have unspoken prayer requests. ✈️⚗️🌫☢️💔🌎🌏🌍🌫☢️💔⚗️🌫🌫🚫🚫💔💔💔💔💔🚫

    Your research is wrong as far as the reason why the half dollar has been seen much less in circulated currency since the 1960s. It has way more to do with the silver remaining in half dollars until 1971, albeit at a lesser percentage. Changes were also made for 1976 quarters and clad dollars, but affected those coins' circulation very little, although admittedly, yes, there has been slightly decreased circulation of all bicentennial coinage due to their difference in design, it has never been enough to make any denomination, in particular the quarter, to effectively disappear from circulation. The clad and golden dollars are seldom seen because paper dollars are not only more familiar, but easier to handle, whereas the half dollar became so rare to see in circulation by the 1970s that even with all the silver content removed, many people had become accustomed to any longer neither handling nor spending half dollar coins. It's as simple as that.

    What about dollar coins vs 2 dollar bills

  • @letterma
    @letterma 3 роки тому

    Dear John!
    My question that I would like to ask is that was there ever a 2 dollar coin in circulation or did the Federal Reserve ever think of making them? You see, in Australia and Canada there are 2 dollar coins in circulation and I wonder why there is no such a thing in the US.
    In my country, Hungary, the National Bank has changed the smallest banknote denomination (200 HUF= approx 70 US cents) to a coin in 2009 and I was desperately sad because it was green, just as the dollar and thus beautiful :) . Although the 2 dollar bill is a small denomination, I love it and I hope it won't become merely a coin.
    Thank you for your answer already in advance!
    Kind Regards,
    Bence (Vincent) from Hungary

    • @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary
      @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Bence. To my knowledge, there has never been any thought of a $2 coin in the U.S. Our government pushed the new $1 coin very hard and no one was interested, so the idea of a $2 coin would be silly. The government would LOVE to be able to make more people use coins, as they last longer and save on printing costs, but it's simply not going to happen (here, anyway). Americans would have to change their habits dramatically before a coin in the two dollar denomination was ever considered.

      So if you had 124 $100 bills. $54.33 change They would probably have 2 x $20 bills for change if you were lucky. And maybe 14 x $1 bills if you were lucky. Because they ran out of $10 and $5 bills.
      The coins no more. No $1, 50¢,10¢ and ¢5. You might get 25¢ Maybe you might get 8 x 1¢ if you're lucky. Because most people will be like forget the change. Just give me the $20 bills if that. Because most will say forget the change. Because a $20 bill would be 20¢ in todays dollars. What can you buy with that? Or bring your own change and pay with exact change. But to get the change you got to pre order $20,000 boxes at the bank. So you will have exact change at the one grocery store that still excepts cash.
      You will be sitting at the one cash register out of 20 cashless lanes counting 124 $100 bills, if you are lucky. That's how they will force you to use a card.

    • @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary
      @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary  4 роки тому

      The easy answer is 0%. All $2 bills are now printed at the Bureau of Engraving & Printing in Fort Worth, Texas. You may be referring to the Federal Reserve Bank they're being made for (indicated by the letter on the black seal, to the left of Jefferson's face), but the bills are only made in Texas. I know the 2013 run was made for the Atlanta district, but I don't know for sure about the most recent ones. Finally, $2 bills are not rare at all. They are the most scarce of any denomination, but that does not make them rare. There are 1.3 billion of them, only 1.8 billion $50s and a similar number of $10s. If people would just use the $2 bills like they do other denominations, no one would think they're rare. Here's a video we had the pleasure of being able to shoot during the print run in 2013: ua-cam.com/video/CewaT5TuYE0/v-deo.html
