  • Director Michael Caton-Jones, producer Stephen Woolley, writer Michael Thomas and exec producer Joe Boyd talk about their 1989 film about the Profumo Affair.
John Profumo, the UK Minister of War, is caught in a tryst with Christine Keeler, a young woman who has also been seeing a suspected Russian spy. Based on the real-life political scandal, the film stars John Hurt as Stephen Ward, the shady social fixer who becomes unwittingly entangled in the media fallout. It’s a great snapshot of 60s Britain, and features an outstanding ensemble cast.
A 30th anniversary edition of Scandal has been released on DVD and Blu-ray: shop.bfi.org.u...

Of course the other big thing they had to miss out of the movie was that Prince Philip was involved, probably with Christine at the same time.

This discussion was fascinating. I love the movie Scandal as the entire production is so evocative of the period.

Absolutely fantastic insight, I personally watched this drama and after part 1 was reluctant to watch part 2 etc as it was so not true to what Chris was like ..

Absolutely. The writers were projecting an idea of what they thought she should have been like. My feeling is that Christine was the archetypal feminine, unknowable at her core, could never be had no matter how many men had her. Joanne Whalley was excellent; with a look you were hers & would do anything, anything to get her.

Terrific film...went because my favourite Brit actor, John Hurt starred in it but of course I knew something about Ms. Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies...From what I've read the film dealt with The Profumo Scandal tastefully-good soundtrack too and Joanne Whalley's great- Ms. Keeler got a dirty deal-

seeing this q & a questions all the more just how free a country it is, the feeling of how you must not fall foul of the establishment/system, but ignore a dangerous bureoucratic rule, as was said in the bbc - profumo ward & me documentary, politicians must not interfere in the legal process (which is in the countries constitution)and yet they did and still do.

When the schoolboys got bowled out and how those in charge wanted to control the narrative.

For an older generation at the time this was an embarrasment' therefore ...27 yrs on theyd still feel the same way being old school not suprisingly.
But for a younger proceeding generation there would be a fresh perspective' on this' plus this was the youth generation of rebellion in the 60s about to happen' so it's not that much of a suprise' the reknewed interest in this public event.
There was also a knew liberalism come 1960 when i believe National service and the death penalty were both dropped, and previous to the Profumo affair a similar thing happened about the Lady Chaterley's lover book' they couldnt get D.H Lawrence becaise he had died & so they went after penquin books instead losing their case of "publishing an obscene article".
There are so many examples of the establishment feeling threatened at this revolutionary time when ww 2 had meant giving up most of the empire

A look extraordinary about a history and theirs implications 20 o more years later. And Profumo is a very bad james bond, with a very foolish son and wife
