- A video biography documenting the successful but troubled life of British "blue-eyed soul" singer, Dusty Springfield.
Born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien in London in 1939 to parents of Irish descent, Dusty Springfield was an English singer whose career spanned five decades. With her distinctive mezzo-soprano vocal sound, she was a significant singer of blue-eyed soul, pop and dramatic ballads, with French chanson, country, and jazz also in her repertoire. During her 1960s peak, she ranked among the most successful British female vocalists on both sides of the Atlantic. Her image - marked by a peroxide blonde bouffant/beehive hairstyle, heavy makeup (thick black eyeliner and eye shadow) and evening gowns, as well as stylised, gestural performances - made her an icon of the Swinging Sixties.
She died in 1999 at Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, aged 59. She had been suffering from breast cancer. [Wikipedia]

She had one of those most talented & distinctive voices of all time. A true talent.
Far from madness, as her handling of addiction & her final illness proved, she embodied the intelligence & musical genius that equalled or surpassed the brilliance often found in those who border on it. She definitely possessed & exhibited out of this world magnificence in so many different ways.....simply mind blowing talent, artistry & beauty in every genre.
Wow! well said! 🤔
7:58 OMG, how cute and adorable is Dusty when she sings AND dances! She brings me such joy when I watch her peform with so much passion and happiness. It's truly fortunate there is so much film footage available of this hugely talented wonderful lady.
She danced and acted every song she sang. She was a joy to watch and to listen to!
Indeed ❤
Wonderful, talented lady you leave behind a memory that will not fade with time or. of history itself. You were part of that early 60's scene and managed to stay the years by your perfectionism, professional skill and of course your voice. Brave until the end you will always remain an inspiration to many. Rest in Peace Dear Lady, we treasure your time here on earth with us.
Very nicely put Garry , and so true , R, I, P, Dusty
Back in the early 70s my Gran adored Dusty Springfield and others such as Petula Clark. and as a young 12 year old I wondered what the fuss was all about. Now as a mature man, I know exactly what high quality of artists my Gran appreciated, boy did she have a wonderful taste!
Ty for this documentary. Ms. Springfield was an amazingly talented and spirited artist. 😎👍💙
Incredible voice, incredible woman! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing as I’ve just read the book. She is my favorite female singer. RIP Linda & Dusty xxx
The Greatest British 'Blues' singer ever.
One of best european singers ,she had black soul but she could sing several kinds of music...unfortunately she died so early
She could move too and I like her particular face 's mimic
When my favourite Dusty song "Going Back" came on near the end there, I just lost it. Rest easy Mary
RIP Dusty Springfield you’ll always be in my heart and in my memory I love what you did. God bless you.
Just a fabulous talent who didn’t know how good she was a true icon
Dusty Springfield. I was a young man listening to her hits of the 60s. She was great! I am sorry she was a troubled woman.
May famous people have uneasy life
Oh my her voice is timeless original of her own. So classy beautiful funny great performer. Glad you enjoyed it
An absolute star. I loved her singing. She gave so much pleasure to so many.
what a fantastic teenage recording with Peter Miles and then pure jazz with the very difficult to please Mel Torme..and to find Peter Miles again...thank you so much
Thank you for sharing this. The greatest - so troubled, yet unrivalled.
Without a doubt one of best singers up there with the best of females singers
She kicked the door open for every single Blue Eyed Soul Singer these past 50 something years. Duffy, Amy Winehouse (RIP), Nadine Coyle (Girls Aloud), Lisa Stansfield, Joss Stone and Adele.
I.love those singers 's singing voices a lot ,but I think they were born thanks to talented ladies like ronnie spector, dusty springfield, diana ross, judy driscoll, shirley bassey ecc.
That first recording was it! You knew she would make it.
The greatest female singer on either side of the Atlantic.
And straight up insane.
Strong talented sensual earth angel and for sure a great singer never to be matched
@@phillipstroll7385 a bit obsessive and seeing some of yourself in there
Along with Lulu
@@davidpanzer1166 who is lulu
Christ, what a voice. An integral part of my musical background growing up in the 60s
And not only
What a story behind a great star with a great voice!
Loved Dusty Springfield so very sorry when she passed Rest In peace Amen 🙏
I cannot immagine her as a 83 years old woman
That's a wild thought but I bet she wouldve still had style !😘
What a great voice and talent
One of my all time favourites.
I had a crush on her sultry voice when I was a kid back in the 60s. I later read in the biography Dancing With Demons how troubled she was. RIP Luv.
Musselchee,I ignored there was a book about her life....i would like to read it...but I hope it doesn't talk too much her private life
@@annaritaranalli1791 What Dusty suffered from is quite common. Reading about it is necessary in order to understand what sufferers go and continue to go through. Read Eggshell Skull by Australian author Bri Lee. Different circumstances, same debility.
Are you talking about bipolar, alcholism, drug abuse ,all three or something different? I have studies some on a thing called BPD borderline personality disorder and in many behaviors she may have had this as well😘
@@cyyoung9175 Self harm.
Outstanding!
HER VOICE GIVES ME CHILLS 😍😍😍
Unforgettably herself. What a voice.
She did her best songs when she began worked at solo singer,in my opinion, and we have to thank gifted bacarach because he was one of them who could show up better her natural talent
We are still obsessed with her, having lived through those years when coming out was too dangerous.
Stunning and talented lady...what a shame she died so early
Thank you for sharing this!
I thought Dusty was beautiful. But beyond that was her amazing talent. It didn't have to be her own song, to sing it well. When she did a cover of a song 🎵 it was as if it belonged to her. That was amazing!!! ❤ miss you Dusty😢.
One of the greats. R. I. P.
Amazing Artist dearest Dusty Springfield..RESPECT 🙏💛
Wow, loved that ... !
Loved her ever since I was about 15 or so, and her greatest hits or out there or she was singing shoes she did put on a quite a good show you know very good show always will think of her as one of the greatest singers we had she gave a lot on her self
Lovely woman. An angel that we lost fast too soon. What's up when not featuring her Pet Shop Boys hits?
She had to break barriers but she became famous on her own
Had a mad crush on her in the 60s. Miss her.
Just WOW. Thank you
As every good single singer she didn 't need Playback
If i was a young woman in the 60's i would of had the biggest crush on her. She was fabulous in every way.
I'm a straigh girl....but I can understand why many men and women appreciate her amazing and elegant beauty...however she became pretty around 22 or 23 years old
I.wasn' t born backthen but immagine she was dream-girl for many people
As a PK (Preacher's Kid) my theme song as an awkward teenager was what I always saw as Dusty's signature song; "The only one who could ever move me ....". RIP Dusty Springfield.
She was good when she sang as solo as well when she did duets
I've never met her,but she was sure very professional in her job and really brave....her many famous colleagues sang in South Africa and who didn't care at all what happened there
Thanks to talented i knew her beautiful singing voice
A great talent taken far too soon 🌹🙏
Nectar, thanx so much or this. I had to have rd some of Dusty music in places in my young life, but we children and thrums teens weren’t allowed radio or tv media in our home. But recently reactors are bringing Dusty back to me. So much of it I know I hadn’t heard tho others I vaguely remember. I just love her hand motions that I didn’t see in rock. It seemed to come from opera or classical music. I just love her.
☆ .. SUPERSTAR .. ! 🧚♀️
Mister bacarach seemed emotional when remembered her
I cannot find her clip about her experience about gorgeous "muppets's show''s experience...i still worship that 📺 show
Dusty Springfield RIP
LOVE HER FOR EVER AND EVER FANTAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks
Gran Voz saludos desde Centro America
I wonder how much self analysis Camille Paglia has done on herself...to describe "Dusty" who was really Mary O'brien (Irish) as "an English pop singer puppet?"...even giving judgement on Dusty's singing voice as having a masculine energy/tone to it...or such like....I just welcomed all she gave and thank her for Dusty in Memphis.
=
Paglia identifies as trans, so therefore looks for those qualities in others when they're clearly not there. I mean, Dusty absolutely did NOT have a masculine voice. I have no idea who decided Paglia's input would add any substance or quality to this documentary. Total misfire.
@@JanBee1122 Brilliant reply! Paglia has been frankly, a pompous ill-informed twit, for many years... probably didn't even know who Dusty/Mary was-- but likes to read her own misguided words and hear her own delusional voice -- nothing has changed.
For 13paicere Dusty concert footage at 14:20 - Royal Albert Hall London - concert for the winners of the New Musical Express readers who voted... MC: I think is the ever smooth Keith Fordyce. (he also hosted Ready Steady go for Associated Rediffusion on Friday nights at 6pm... Probably PYE TV outside Broadcast unit with Image Orthicon camera tubes -- Her microphone is a Phillips early talent use condenser mic.
Dusty Springfield(Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien)(April 16th,1939-March 2nd,1999)Dusty Springfield was the stage of Mary O'Brien!
An excellent film about the great lady - and with Melvin Bragg - the original Cumbrian shepherd boy! (No, I`m not being mean). The greatest recommendation.
Martha and the vandellas did most beautiful version about ",dancing in the street" as well blonde dusty springfield
Music is universal some people who hint at this is "our music" small minded
Was she appreciate in northern America?
love Dusty and like this doc but the way Camille Paglia speaks of Dusty is reductive
I was going to say something similar. Camille has a tendency to overthink things. She's a writer and an intellectual. Thus, being verbose probably comes with the territory.
This was an awesome documentary on Dusty. Ms. Paglia's comments, notwithstanding.
She's never been more than a publicity seeking grouchy jerk.
Well said.
Well, all I want to say is this,
just WHO IS/WAS this Camille Paglia
anyway!!!? ffs….🤷♀️🤦♀️ never ever heard of her!
And I’ve been on this Earth for MANY years….!!
How DARE she even begin to comment on a real
legend like Dusty 😮I’m speechless tbh 🤦♀️🤦♀️😱😡
Дасти ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
at 14:20 + Can anyone tell me what concert she is making an appearance in?? This clip is used in several documentaries, and I am wondering if she was on a joint bill with others...? Any idea? Thank you! I LOVE Dusty!!
New musical express poll winners concert, there are two I have found on YT 1965 and 66
She worked a lot before to became famous
Well it was the 60's and nothing was more important to that man's world than a woman of skin and bones with enormous breasts. Unfortunately, this demand was way too much for most young women and girls including Dusty. May she continue to rest in peace. Women are so fortunate for all that has changed and still we have blockbuster movies like Marvel's Avengers: End Game with a cast of 20 + men to one woman written in only for sex appeal. What men have not figured out yet is that most women who witness this sexist phenomenon realize they could never measure up to the CGI perfection that they shrink away from wanting sex. It's a lose lose for everyone.
If Mary O'Brien could live again and I could I would
love to be able to live my life with her regardless
of sexuality just as in "You Don't Have To Say........."
You're are off your rocker. She was a homicidal maniac. She tried to kill several people. Including her own spouses and herself. She chased one with a knife screaming I'll kill you and another had to knock her teeth out and knock her out cold just to save her from killing her. She used to stab herself just to see if she was alive. She used to think she was already dead so she'd stab herself and say well I know I'm alive because I can feel the knife. Then confuse to cut and Stab herself. She was nuts. Scary nuts. She once the a TV in a swimming pool. If it didn't come unplugged she would have murdered everyone in the pool.
I am always attracted to people like that~~~time with me (also a musician) would tame her !
@@andrewjoseph149 Andrew whe you are gay you are gay. You know how you are straight. Well gay is gay too.!!!
@@andrewjoseph149 Yes, we know Andrew, "all she needed was the right man", lol.
if this is Burt in 2021 , he looks great
I think this was recorded in 2006
I read that someone is making a movie about her
I really hope so!
Me too. Did want to know why she kept trying to kill herself.
@@locadisa Dusty was bipolar and also had some other medical issues that we don't all know about. Along with drinking and drugs which a lot of us went through back in those days. They didn't also know that much about mental illness back in the 80s or before that
Oh God ... I'm getting old, I actually agree with Charles Shaar Murray
Seems like a double standard. One rule for the boys, another rule for the girls. Dusty was very gifted performer. Enough said.
She sang in espressive way
Baby Washington is a good singer too
Oh please go away Camilla. Other than that, this is a wonderful documentary.
I read she could play many instruments too
Yes, of course guitar , but do you know if she played piano or drums or anything else?😘
NORMA TANEGA?
If they said her name, I missed it.
Really a shame, a bit disrespectful.
Was there ever a film being planned...? Who could "play" her?...Adele?
Irelands best export❤
So many artists/creatives are eventually destroyed by the critic that sits on the shoulder.
I repeat missis mary isobel o'brien could be a movie and 📺 'actress if she had estudied acting...perhaps she wouldn' had been new vivien leigh or bette davies....however she had a very espressive face ....i would had see her well in "the persuaders " or in "jason king " or in "deparmtment s"
Sorry,I wanted to say she was espressive but probably she didn't become a new bette davies or vivien leigh..however she could be pretty good actress...but it is hard to sing and to act at the same time
Is it true she had cosm etic surgery ? Dont know why she would. Beautiful gal !
She was very beautiful when her hair was long and red(her hair's true colour),and i think she didn't need that heavy makeup
She had a violent fight with the woman she married and thus needed reconstructive surgery.
Dental surgery or something, it was because of an altercation between her and her ex i believe
💜💜💜👈... YMJ🎭🎬💜...
How sad !
Please do not be sad, be happy that she lived life to the fullest. She was Wonderful!
I was thinking she was an African-American woman singer before see her video.
She could sing any 🎶 kinds but she was a white woman with a perfect soul singing voice
Mee too ozan
Well I think it's a good idea to segregate the sexes even though there are many in between, i have trouble mostly with people who are taking hormones because they are unhappy with whatever the dividing lines they think they are, get it right relax with your identity
Come on guys. Keep on topic, please.
