Today's generation are so lucky to be in a time where pro's share their knowledge on platforms like youtube. There's literally no excuse not to learn how to draw now. The closest we had to this back in the day was visiting the library for anatomy books, the Kubert school, the Brigman books, How to draw comics the marvel way, a section in Wizard magazine called Brutes and babes by Bart Sears and the Comic book greats video series on vhs which were only released on VHS in the USA and didn't pop up on ebay until 2002/2003. That was probably the first time most fans got to see Jim actually construct a basic torso mannequin. Even Dave Finch said he learned so much from Jim's demos from that video series. Most of us probably had no idea about the Brigman books before Jim mentioned them.
@thehb2k Yeah, digital media IMO is a great skill to have and it's a bonus if you're already grounded in drawing with traditional media. If a beginner jumps straight to digital It can slow them down on things like perspective because they will be spending more time learning the software and trying to draw a straight line on the tablet when they could have already filled up a sketchbook with cubes and ellipses. Even experienced artists have a small period where they struggle drawing straight lines on a tablet but the drawing training is already there so the software can't restrict them when they get used to the tablet, they can then take their time learning the software. You can always spot a penciller whose work is heavily reliant on the inker/colourist, even if it's a cartoony style. Same for inkers. If they only know inking techniques but not grounded in basic drawing then they will struggle to save a bad drawing because they're trying to ink before they can draw. Kevin Eastman is an all round draughtsman and proper old school. I grew up with the Eastman and Laird Turtles comics and the Heavy Metal/Melting Pot stuff he did with Bisley so familiar with his work. He now has a looser but recognizable, sketchy style and his work still looks great and stands out, even when there's no colour or hatching. His style still has that cool Frank Miller vibe.
Yeah now you can just waste your whole life watching tutorials and sitting on twitch watching artists draw instead of ever doing anything productive. Or getting very discouraged by posting your art to social media and wasting your time on discords(where no one EVER gets better). Back then when he sent his work to companies they also replied and told him what to work on, now youre never going to get any help from anyone unless you are very lucky since there are a billion people trying to be artists. Watching someone with decades of experience draw a mannequin doesnt mean shit anyway, a beginner might look at that and think oh yeah I can do that, and then fail spectacularly because they dont have all the anatomy and drapery study the artist drawing the mannequin does. Or they can only draw the mannequin from the exact same angle as the video.
90’s X-men was what got me started on Jim Lee. His art is absolutely amazing. It’s what drew me to comics more, even though Superman was my first comic icon. May we see his art throughout the future.
You cannot believe how inspirational you are to me (an artist still learning) I really wish we could speak to each other! Even the smallest pieces of advice can help me in such a large way. Thank You!
Thanks for everything jim, you are the real superhero, since I follow your tutorials I have improved in drawing and I am interpreting art in a different way...
Mr. Lee, I am a year older than you and started collecting comic books in 1972. The first time that I saw your work, I thought it was a quantum leap in comic book art. My brother and I both agreed that you were our favorite comic book artist. I followed you through Image comics, and eventually had to 'grow-up' and focus on raising a family and stopped collecting comics, but remember your work fondly. I just found your UA-cam channel and want to thank you for sharing your skill and knowledge. One question that I have is how often do you draw yourself into a corner and decide that a mistake in your drawing is unrecoverable?
Jim Lee's best art in the last 5 years all come from these streams. I don't know if i feel more attached to it because i've seen it get made or that Jim has less pressure about the quality of the final product which makes him try things that he isn't as comfortable or just plain goofy stuff, making the piece more unique.
One of these days I will get a chance to meet you and get you to draw me a Joker. I have loved your style of art for years, and would love an original Joker drawing done by the great Jim Lee some day. This drawing is awesome. I just love it. 🃏
@@ibeethatoneguy7807 it's a good one, I don't think he posted it on his channel but this guy edits his videos to shorten them: ua-cam.com/video/ksQTIAuU7uQ/v-deo.html
Bro, i will never meet you in real life, but you made my childwood. Litteraly. With the X-men. & I got to thank you for that. Long life to you Jim, & Blessings.
I have issues in social settings, so i use my art as an ice breaker. Like for example when i started my job many years ago i hadnt talked to anyone in months. I just sat at a table by myself and would draw everyday and people started to notice the things that i would draw. They noticed i would draw a lot of comic versions of wrestlers sothey began to talk to me about my art. I made a few friends that had similar interests.
First when I saw this I thought; "heck I can draw better than that", then he pulls out the ink... I stand corrected. Really fantastic stream, you're amazing!
Like some other artists, I too was influenced by fascinated people like Kirby, Buscema and Finch as well. Oh another reason why I like to draw is reading Jeff Kinney's books. I bet that sounds really awkward.
Jim, I need to get a submission of 5 inked pages to Image Comics ASAP. Seriously, how do I get it done quickly? Any tips? Can you ink my pencils? Love your work; I've learned a lot from your channel. Omega Red ftw.
Great vid, really appreciate it, learnt a lot. I feel like mine just fell apart as soon as I inked the face though, maybe you could make a vid drawing/inking several faces on “small” heads?? Like inking a large face is easier but smaller gets harder. In general mine looks good but the head/face is a fail :’( thanks though :)
How to draw the JOKER!? Two easy steps.
1. Be Jim Lee
2. Hire Jim Lee.
@@श्रीजनरिजाल agreed
why should you do both?
Squidward that’s what I’m trying to figure out
So I have to be jim lee and then hire myself?
@S. H. R. Rjjal i think the best joker is capullo
