How to install a primary gear reduction on any honda 500 (including the p500) or 420 non-dct very similar to the install on the 450 foreman and rancher 350 as well. do not attempt without the clutch puller. if you need a reduction email me at
christianthemudpuppy@gmail.com.
if this video helped you out show me some love at / mudpuppy
Excellent video and nice job. The clutch adjustment on the air cooled 500 is indeed subject to seizing. Once adjusted, goobing some silicone around the nut and screw seems to help keep gunk out of there.
Thanks for the video, really does a good job to show how much work it is to do a gear reduction. great video.
Thanks for sharing the vid. Definitely took a chance by showing how this is done. Awesome shop setup too... This is an all too familiar sight after all the timing chains i have put in over the years.
+Cato's ATV Service thanks I am loving the new shop it's small but the ac so prime
i needed this video about 2 months ago lol. some how i got everything right
Great video, you certainly know what your doing. I just bought a 2018 honda forman, it came with 28/10/14 super atv intimidators on it. I don't think I should have any issues with those, what do you think?
This was just what I needed! Thank you! Checking out that patreon now!
+Swamp Ass awesome!
Hey mud puppy is this what u use to gr
We need more vids like this
Very well put togathe vidio! I have a question tho I rebuilt my motor and when I split the front case I guess a washer fell out and I couldn’t find where it goes… so I put it back togather and now it makes a clicking sound in reverse sometimes and sometimes when I have it pinned going up a hill somthing it sounds like the gear shifter is clicking so you know where that washer might go or why my 2014 Honda 420 is clicking?
Definitely will be buying a primary and secondary from you. If that is still possible. Great video!
Yeah Who doesnt want more ground clearance it's something to consider if you mud ride thanks for reply
On the centrifugal clutch you said there is a spec for the end play of that on the shaft, I cannot find that spec, can you tell me? The manual I have says to tap it till its seated, and then torque to spec. That should effectively remove any end play unless the nut isnt really long enough to do that. In which case I dont know how you could ever tighten it enough to remove that end play completely.
Damn was hopin. You were closer to NC I can't find anybody and what's the biggest sizes tire you can run on a 2019 Forman 500 I like the aztecs
I have read in the commits that a gr will not set well with the es models, correct? And why would that be, gear change timing or??? So does that automatically throw me out of doing a reduction on my 04 forman 450? I just ordered 31 havocs and 100 percent sure ill need a reduction. I also got a 05 forman 500 im building also. Got to get the head sorted and ill be close to finished. However they both are es models. Hoping for a reply, ive liked, and followed. Thanks
Hey mud puppy I just got a 2012 honda rancher 420 es and power steering. What all needs vent lines ran to headlight pod? Also I have 28 outlaw 2 with secondary 15% gr what do you think about the bike also thanks
Was that on high or low gear when you would go mudding , it's because lm just about to own a Polaris ace
Great video! After removing my clutches to change cam tensioner with 12 hr run time 4th gear pops out immediately to 3rd. I can skip to 5th with no issues. Does that sound like a gear issue or clutch issues? Before splitting the case I would like some advice on critical inspection areas. Thanks
Sounds like you need a mechanic and you probably messed up something in the front of the motor
How much different is a 35% gear reduction on 07 Honda 420 electric shift compare to this foot shift?
How much do you charge to for 35% for a 2017 Rubicon and install? I’m located in southeast NC.
Would it just be better if I just went ahead and got a 300 did the 54 gear reduction and put like 31 BKT'S on it snorkel and 2in lift I love Honda I just want an older wheeler that I can take through anything. That's why I bought the 2002 Honda Foreman 450 ES 4x4 put a 2 inch lift kit on it and it has 28 inch bkts 2inch snorkel carb vented and crank case as well but it's hard for my 4-wheeler to spin and clean out the 28 inch tires that's why I wanted to do a gear reduction what state are you from I'm in Texas
Can you swap a 500 clutch basket to a 420 to have that added disc. Do you have to swap the actual basket An clutch pack or can you take a 500 clutch pack An put it in a 420 basket?
Hey mudpuppy, big fan. I have an 07 rancher 420, and I was wondering if you could make a video of the older 420s since I don’t have a 2014 or newer
It’s a SRA and I want a secondary reduction on mine. Just a 15.5 and idk if you can make a video on it or send me a link to someone that has a video but I haven’t found anything really detailed step by step instructions
Could you put a one way check valve on that weep hole line for your water pump? So it won’t let anything get in it but it’ll still leak and let you know if your water pump is going bad? Or would it be best to just plug it or snorkel it like you said?
You can do that but once the check valve gets a little bit of mud and it's going to stick open
Did you need to bend some kind of tap back to take that 27mm nut off the pto clutch
What size is clutch puller I have a 13 foreman 500
I am looking to upgrade my 17 Rubicon IRS to 31 BKT's. I ride in the mud mostly and take the trail to get there. I don't have a lift or ached a arms yet. What gear reduction would you reccomend? Trying to keep up with those big displacement motors in the mud. Thanks for your time!
27 or 35
looking for a video on a 2004 suzuki eiger wet clutch replacement
Mud Puppy I'm 14 and I have a 1986 honda fourtrax 350 and a 1999 polaris sportsman 500
Mud Puppy my 2015 Honda rancher 420 4x4 straight axle seems to be making a racket coming from either the rear differential or more towards the transmission. I just replaced the ring and pinion and the racket seemed to stop after two or three weeks it started again. If you know how I can fix this problem it would help me out a lot. Thanks
+TEAM_SUICIDE_HAWNDAS 01 that's a new bike to have t rebuild the diff? Lots of water? Try changing the ujoint
I've seen don had some good reviews on his reductions but how much would you charge to install a lift and stretch and what gr would be needed to turn 32s on a 420 sra
I just do gear reductions
Is it the same process on a 2017 rancher
What clutch kits do you use for your 300s
Was this one of Jeremy Lee's 35% gear reduction?
In need of a gr about to get 33 inch motohavoks for a 2013 rancher 420 electric shift🤔
Would it make sense to get arched a arms for a sra so It would drag less only on the axel just wondering less to drag if bottomed out ?
doesnt made as big of a difference but it does help and it does look better. also being able to adjust the front end is huge
I feel like a bugging in the motor when I go like through a long puddle like there's not sufficient power does this means it needs the gear reduction
+Arturo Sardinas yep
Iv got a 86 big red with a 54% and running 32" interforce 2 and thinking about doing my 500 foreman what do you offer on a 500
+steve billow 35%
Mud Puppy 35% is all for a 500?
Do you have any gear reductions for a 97 foreman 400s?
How much are your 35% gear reduction for a Honda 420 2014
How do u buy a gear reduction from u
Once I get some miles maybe I’ll open mine up. How much for reduction. Also what clutches for a 15 rubi? So I can hit up some research?
35% is about 475$ I run DRC clutches
Mudpuppy, how can you tell if a gear reduction has been done?? Top speed only 40mph on a 2013 Honda foreman trx500 fe with 25" bighorns. Or is one or both of the clutches bad??
Jody Tucker I have a 2017 Foreman 500 with 26" tires and I've gone 54mph. Sounds like you're regeared there bud. But you should use your phone to download a GPS speedometer to compare it to what your bikes speedometer is saying and then compare that information to know for sure
I have a 2012 Foreman 500 Foot shift. Can you tell me why it takes a lot of effort to shift between gears unless I have the rpm’s high.
Could it be my clutch is going out?
question for you i got a 04 foreman 450 14% gear reduction high comp, standered bore, web cam, would it be worth a clutch kit in it? along with a gear reduction i heard not spose to run both of them ,bogs quit a bit in second gear
+1boehm any Honda will be in second gear but you probably should do a 35% gear reduction
+1boehm will bog
Hey man, just wondering if I could get a part number or a website for that clutch puller. I’ve looked everywhere and the only thing I’ve found that looks like yours says it fit 35mm threads. I didn’t think they looked that big. Thanks for any information!
35 mm sounds right
Ok thanks man!
Mud puppy I'm thinking about getting a 2017 Polaris ace 325 and l want to run some 30s outbacks with some msa rims and people say I'm gonna burn lots of belts so will gear reduction help to not burn belts much
+Juan Villa the 325 is geared crazy low
+Juan Villa I ran 33 bKts np
Just buy a reinforced belts
Try gear lift
I'm wanting to get back into mud riding and buy a new fourhweeler but I'm stuck on what to get I think I got it narrowed down to either a rancher 420 or a rubicon 500. I'm wanting to run 31 outlaws. Could you tell me what size gr I would need to turn 31s on both bikes. And I know you're probably partial to a rubi but is there anything wrong with a 420 for mudding?
+curtis snow the 420 rear suspension sucks, and no locker, and it's geared higher
+curtis snow 27% on the Rubicon 35 on the 420
I need some help I got a used 2015 rancher knowing it had problems. I took off the front case to investigate and the clutch pack doesn't look right. The last clutch fiber is not in line with the others, is it supposed to be like that? I think I can see on yours that it is but I can't tell for sure.
Yep that's normal
Mud Puppy Thank you
It makes noise at high rpm and slips out of gear, tomorrow I'm pulling the clutches and looking at the shifting parts.
Hey Mud Puppy. I have a ‘13 Honda Foreman 500 ES on Mudzillas (F) 28x8-12 and (R) 28x10-12. I mud it in Florida and looking for a gear reduction. What would you recommend? I have a 2” lift and 2” spacers. Thanks and awesome vids, nothing better than a Honda!
+Alex Hennessy a 15.5% secondary would be perfect on those tires. Have one in stock
Mud Puppy Thanks. How much? Know anyone is South Florida you would recommend for the install? Not sure I’m rdy to tackle this one myself
It honestly seems pretty easy to install a gear reduction on these bikes. Just take your time and pay attention to how you removed everything. And by following this video I don’t see how you could mess it up lol unless you leave the washer or remove it when you shouldn’t like you were saying
35% for a 420. What's the price? I have a guy local that does great but I like your vids and would like to try and support you.
Where are you located and do they make them for and 07 foreman ?
I just bought a honda rancher 420 4x4 that has 28"x10x12s silver-backs all the way around, seems to be pulling them well. the steering does have alot of stack in it, what would cause this? how would i know if i need a GR? thanks
+Joe Ryan tie rod ends most likely. And you definitely need a gear reduction a 420 will bog in any thick mud on 28s
Thanks for the help, I already changed the tierod ends, didn't fix it and i also tighten that big nut, after doing that it does get alot of the slack out, but it loses back up and has alot of slack again, could it be a bearing? thanks
Great video, we will be in contact with you soon
Are all years the same I wanna get one for my 2003 rubicon 500 idk if it’s a rubicon or a Forman yet picking it up tomorrow
No they're not remotely the same there's no reduction for your machine
@@MudPuppyOffroad well darn looks like I’m selling it to fix my 300 😂
Duuuuuude I’ll pay u I got a 2020 outlander 1000 Xmr looking to get portals and no one has them do u or know someone that has them or can u make some fit
Do you have a website you sell from or an email address to get in touch with you to buy a few things?
I have 2018 with 120 miles on it. Doing my gr next week.. do I still need to adjust the clutch bolt? Or would I be good leaving it alone and doing the gr
Always adjust the the clutch
Can you tell me the part numbers for seal and the new nuts?
Can gear reduction tear up the motor?
Okay I bought a project bike and my fourth gear is out it’s 07 420 rancher would that be the same process to change it or no
Lol hell no. You need to pull the entire motor and take it completely apart have fun
Make sure to change the oil pump while you're in there
Im about to do one on my 2014 rancher 420 dct i have 29.5 outlaws what % do you recommend
I recommend selling that and getting a foot shift.
Do you think my 2017 Honda foreman 500 can run 27 inch interco interforce 2s stock?
Wesley Berryhill kinda late but I was running 28” outlaws on my stock foreman and it did perfect so I’m sure you should be fine
I'm looking to get a new four wheeler would it be better to get a 680 or a 500?
+nathan french 50
Hey I was wondering where you were located so I could possible get you to do a gear reduction on a 2019 Forman 500

Would you be able to make an IRS conversion kit for a Honda rancher 420?
+Cesar Hernandez no get a rubi with a front locker
Mud Puppy What I want to do is take a 420 that is good and make it even better so that I can get into holes and get out unlike a can am. Pretty much just show can am drivers how much a Honda is!!!

@@MudPuppyOffroad thanks man appreciate it
Do you sell and install GR’s
Can you get a gr for a Honda rancher 420
I've got a 2013 rancher 420. Gonna put an exhaust air filter and the hmf equalizer on it a 2" lift and 29.5 outlaws. Would I need a gear reduction? I don't want to lose a lot of speed but also want to be able turn the tires in a mud hole
Every 420 ever needs a gear reduction. End of story
@@MudPuppyOffroad what size should I go
I've got 26 mud lite xl's on it right now and have no problems with them she will throw mud in 2nd 4wd
@@zackladd4682 there mudlites not ols..
Great vid but if you get a 14 or newer rancher in the shop can you make a video on a secondary gr, and Is the process for a rancher dct gr the same as a foot shift gr
+Rubens Life I have a secondary Video. And the dct is kinda different
+Rubens Life ua-cam.com/video/Mata1d2NvhE/v-deo.html
Mud Puppy I have a Sra dct do I have to take the swing arm off?
+Rubens Life yes you do. What %reduction are you wanting I have a few in stock
Mud Puppy I'm wanting to get a 35% when I have some extra money what's the biggest tire I could spin with a 35%
Hey bro. How the hell do you loosen up the adjustment screw on the case. I got the nut off but the damn screw is frozen solid. Do you hit itt with a hammer?
That could be a very tricky procedure. Usually heat penetrating oil and a punch file down into a flat blade did not mess up the threads does the trick. I've also had to make a puller using two nuts and pull it from the inside
@@MudPuppyOffroad I brought the case cover to shop down the road I exhausted my tools and safty margin. Sooo hopfully they have beter results otherwise ima get a new cover.
Mud puppy I can’t find a gear reduction for my 2013 Honda rubicon 500 it’s got a drive and low and it’s a manual shift and auto can I gear reduct it?? Please respond
+Ripping lips Tv you can't do a reduction on those
Is there anything I can do for lower gear or more power
+Ripping lips Tv its already geared very low and has way more power than most Honda's. If you're having issues it's probably not running right
if i take my 2018 rubicon 500 to you with the gr how much would u charge to install?
Where are you located
You still sell reductions?
Yo theres oil leaking out of my driveshaft and at one of the bottom bolts on my clutch cover case, you think it could be that drive shaft O ring and seal?
99% of the time is the front output shaft seal
@MudPuppyOffroad thanks man appreciate it, gonna order the seal and double check that bottom bolt
@mudpuppyoffroad it indeed is!
So I was driving my 94 trx300 through some water, and I think i sucked some water up the exhaust. took me forever to get it started, finally got it to start, drove it for another hour or so , there was no water in air box or anything. the next day when i was taking it off the trailer it will only start for a second or two, then shut off, then will just keep trying to turn over but wont actually pop off. if i let it sit for a few mins then try it again itll start for a few seconds then shut off and not want to start again. What could be wrong??? Also I have no more Kickstart anymore. Its like its slipping or something. I just rebuilt the whole motor a month ago, and it runs strong, I know I have compression because it started again and rode fine after it sunk.
+Scuba Gaming drain your carb
Should I pull the jets and just clean it all out, or just drain it?
+Mud Puppy try just a drain first
Hey there. You seem knowledgeable on the atv. I sunk a 2014 honda rancher 420. It now ticks pretty loud. Im very mechanically inclined. Can I contact you somehow?
I'm also about an hour and a half from orlando
How much gear reduction do I need for a Honda Foreman I'm running small 26" Abuzz tires but I pull around a 2000 lb trailer at least once a week. The foreman can handle it but I don't want to have to rebuild a clutch in a couple years. How much gear reduction do you recommend?
+Jake Bishop 15% primary
Mud Puppy How much do you sell those for?
I need a gear reduction done
I just bought a 2017 Foreman 500 (foot shift), and is it normal to hear a little crunch when going into 4 wheel drive every now and then?? I'm at 17 miles right now, and it only started doing it on my last 2 rides, and it's not every time, just every now and then I can hear it. Thanks!!
+tigerfan3905 ...you must be engaging it while rolling not good practice... Won't really hurt anything for a long time but does accelerate wear on the engagement splines and it's harder on the actuator motor
Mud Puppy Got ya!! Thanks!!
Mud Puppy May have been creeping into some mud when I hit the button.
+tigerfan3905 sounds like you are trying to engage 4 by 4 while Rollin that will get a little crunch sound the manual says that it is okay however I only engage 4 by 4 from a complete stop
tigerfan3905 my 17 rancher does that as well
How much it’s the 35% reduc ?
Can you install a gear reduction in a 04 rancher 400 AT
Eww no
Do you make a gear reduction for a 2007 polaris hawkeye? It had 22" tires stock I now have 25s and want to run 26s. With spacers and wider tires.
Can you make one a gear reduction for a 01-03 Honda rancher 350 es model. Mine was switch to manual shifting
+Gee Mtz that particular bike does not respond well to Gary duction if you converted to foot shift it works fine but the es will freak out with a gear reduction
I have an 04 350 and every thin i see if that they whine terribly.
@mud puppy. Thanks for replying.. I wanted to run 26s or 27s outlaws but I can't come across any 26s skinnies. Might know of a website?
@mudpuppy my 350 is bone stock. I'm on 26s itp rims and tires any suggestions on mods. The es part is not working so is completely manual
not the 39%
He dude big fan
How do you feel about the 680 rincon?
+Bryce Eaton no locker geared very high decent power though
Iso of a reduction for 2021 420 irs
What is the max tire size you recommend before needing a gear reduction?
More about the type of tire than the size
Say I wanted to run 28" QBT672's with a 2" lift
Or could I go slightly larger
Do you make a reduction for a 2004 honda foreman rubicon trx500fa
No
hello I have a 2017 honda rancher 420 with electronic transmission after installing gear reduction the miles no longer work and the transmission don’t apply someone knows why thank you
