I have been making leather goods for 6 years. Not only did I learn things from this but I am glad you monetized your channel. This type of knowledge is worth good money. Well done, mate.
In the beggining, I thought: why this video is so long? It's just a knife case! But in the end, I know a lot of things about leather stitching, and the most important thing - how to handle product perfectly! This case is really perfect and looks very premium quality! Well done!
Thanks for all the tips - I've made slip cases for small whetstones, so I know that getting a good fit isn't easy, but your work is way neater than mine, so hopefully I can learn from this and improve my work. I also enjoyed this: 'If you slide it up and down, you can see how tight it feels in there.' ;-)
Thank you for the amount of detail you went into about how you use the leather strips for working out the threading location for templating. I'm just now getting into leatherwork, and I was wondering the best way to figure that out.
Great video. One thing I noticed, is when you repositioned the knife in when measuring for the case, the front piece became longer then the back. I would recommend removing the item, repositioning the clamps with flat leather, and try again.
Brilliant I've been looking for a video that explains the sizing of a pattern ,you really explain it well . I do have one question ,I'm just starting out as a hobby and trying to find leather supplies in the UK that are cheap enough to try out is difficult . I have bought some tools from amazon as well as some chrome leather ,I've found Identity Leather Craft in Matlock and am waiting for some veg tan and glue to try out. do you have any recommendations for leather suppliers in the UK selling small amounts for us hobbyists . Great channel nice to hear a calm English accent explaining things so well .
I really wish I had watched this video before I tried making my own things. Do you know if this method of making a pattern would be applicable to wet molding around the item? Thanks
Ian, what size Pricking irons would you recommend for use on Sheaths I am looking to get a 2 and 4 prong irons to start, but what size 3mm, 4mm, 5mm or 6mm and does this equate to thread size ?
Ian. I always have trouble getting my stitching holes even around the item. I am always off by a mm or two, just like this example you marked. I tried finding and marking the center of the object on the stitch line (at the bottom of the case) and then walk the irons in both directions. If I am careful, they do match up at the top opening. Have you ever tried this?
No, I stitch these at 8.5SPI so the stitches are small enough that it doesn't really matter where the last one ends up. If you're using a bigger stitch it would be more of an issue.
yes it's a 3mm iron, if you wanted to use larger you'd need to balance it out per your particular iron as you say (then maybe mark the start and end on your pattern)
@@Leodis.Leather I just tried my unused 3mm iron on a small sheath. You are absolutely correct. Even though I did start in the center and work my way out, the 3 mm stitches ended about the same place. Good to know. Thank you Ian.
Great vid again. You may have been asked this before, but, have you a link so I can buy the glue in the brush bottle that you use. I haven't done leather work for many years. Cheers in advance. I am in the UK.
I've seen you hammer the glued edges in a few videos but apparently have missed the explanation for doing so. Why do you hammer the edges after you glue it together?
Hi Ian, I'm another one struggling with the stitch. On your 2014 video ua-cam.com/video/3zTOqJCWbfY/v-deo.html minute 7:00 you explained about going through the loop with your left hand (like in this video) but in your 2013 video ua-cam.com/video/Y0EL7K2NhYs/v-deo.html minute 1:09:30 you don't bother with that like Nigel does... Does it make any difference in order to keep 'clean' front and back stitching? Does it make any difference if using thin leather? Thank you for the videos and hope you keep helping as we should.
Thank you, Ian will keep testing the loop method and although you don't say about thin leather I will keep trying... hope me and much more hit the donate bottom by the end of this year.

Doesn't make any money unless people actually click on the adverts which hardly anybody does unfortunately.
If we click on the ad, you can make money? Do we need to watch the whole ad to the end, or will just clicking on it will make you money?
Ian Atkinson...that is good to know. I certainly would not mind a click here and a click there to help a great channel out...lol.
I'll click on the links, thanks
This is by far, the best, most concise tutorial on any subject that I have ever seen. Outstanding.
I'm glad I found this video because I need to learn this part of my new favorite hobby.
Followed your instructions to the letter.... and came up with an outstanding slip for my JE Made slip joint. Fits perfectly. Thank you so much!

Was looking to put some old leather to good use and decided to take this on. Really appreciate you taking the time to make such a detailed tutorial.
I just finished a simple slip case for my Victorinox pen knife and measured it with help from this video. The fit is perfect. Thanks, Ian!
I've watched this video twice already and many of your other videos. Great work. Another hobby for me to get into.
Oh man, you deserve a monument for this video!
Just getting back in to leather craft and I find your videos very informative. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

This video is invaluable. Thanks Ian. It really provides creative independence, a wonderful tool and gift.

I’m all about the innuendos 😂
Hey Ian, nice to see you back again. And great work as always.

This is great! Thank you for sharing. I have been looking to buy a 3 slot pocket sheath...now I am looking to get a few tools and do it myself!
Excellent tutorial. Very clear and great
Great video! Thanks Ian. Picked up some excellent tips.
Great video. Very in-depth and informative.

thanks for sharing... alot of smart tips and tricks ☺
Genius. My problem solved. Thanks so much!
Fantastic video, thanks! Pattern making is really difficult. I hate having a prototype that just doesn't fit.

You don’t need to wet mould thin leather, I have other videos on wet moulding.
great video. you inspire me to do better and make nicer items.
Thank you so much for the lesson!
Hi, Ian,, hope all's well with the new house /workshop,, how about a quick update, ??
Cheers mate....
Love this channel 👍👍👍
Hi my friend. where did you get it circle ruler ???
hurşut bayar I was wondering the same...
Do you ever water mold the leather to fit the knife? Or do you find it not necessary.
Gracias por compartir, excelente video

Hello there I'm in the UK and i would love one of those may i ask how can I get hold of one thanks so much for sharing this fantastic video with us 👍
they're for sale on my shop the link is in the description
@@Leodis.Leather really fantastic I'm going to take a look right away 👍
Hey can you tell me which glue you used? Great video!!
Thanks very much!
Q: The extra added 4mm either side; is that to the top or bottom or center of the stitch line?
Ian. I always have trouble getting my stitching holes even around the item. I am always off by a mm or two, just like this example you marked. @@Leodis.Leather That makes so much sense. I go between 3.85mm and 3.35mm stitch length. I guess 8.5 spi is closer to 3 mm. Thank you!
yes it's a 3mm iron, if you wanted to use larger you'd need to balance it out per your particular iron as you say (then maybe mark the start and end on your pattern)

is there any preference for the type of cloth to be used on the leather?
x&y mate. that's like a grade school nightmare.
Great video. What thread type and size did you use for this?
excellent! is possible to make a tutorial for a leather wrist watch? thank you!

Just posting this to make "Those People" who complain about the hammering aware that most computers have an independent volume control... Jesus.
what size thread did you use with this project?
I've seen you hammer the glued edges in a few videos but apparently have missed the explanation for doing so. Why do you hammer the edges after you glue it together?
Thanks!
How did you burnish the pieces where is opens?
great video ian! can i use this technique in making ipad cases also?
Yes, he mentioned that at the start of the vid - use the same technique for the iPad instead of the knife.
Do you sell your slip cases I would like to buy a couple
Yes they are available on my Etsy shop for certain models
Good vidio
