Ian wasn’t hanging around there, you can tell he’s done a few of those in his time. Nice to see someone taking care and going belt and braces with the adhesive. Nice one guys really enjoying this series.
Great video. No matter how many stud walls I put up, never get bored of watching how others put them together! I'm in the habit of doubling the studs up at doorways!
Need to give Ian a wee bit a pay raise so can get himself a new and proper measuring tape that is not worn out. He did a proper good job . Great video guys.
We gave him a new tape 3 weeks ago. He wears them out with all that measuring.

I'll give you a tip:- for the head plate use a couple of plaster board props, these will keep it in the rough position while you plumb a couple of studs up. make life so much easier.
The props were in the corner of the room doing nothing. Sometimes you just have to do things the hard way. No logic to it

Looks awesome. Something I do when attaching the side pieces to the blockwork is to stagger the fixings. This just helps isolate 1 of the degrees of freedom a little more than if all the screws are in the same plane.

Those little evolution saw a brill for the money. Picked one up for doing skirting and arci in small rooms and tight spaces. It was even square out of the box which surprised me.
They are a great little saw, very light and so easy to carry around!
Brilliant little tool, costs the same as my good blades do, if I hit a nail it won't kill the blade
They cut about as straight as a politician 🙄😝🔨

I may be missing something but surely once you've drilled a hole and try to fine tune the level it will just pull back to the original position
You are not wrong. Better getting it straight and then drilling
because he pilot drilled for the fixing in the timber you still can move a few mm either way by pulling the timber as the fixing has a little.play in the hole. Maintain pressure as you tighten and you can get it say where you want it.
Ian on the Job again , are they radio ear defenders ? Us bricklayers work to tolerances of one as well , ours is one inch either way though 🤣🤣🧱👍🏼

I'll be putting my first stud wall together (DIYer) in the next few weeks and if i'm only a mil out from one end of the room to the other i'll pop a bottle of bubbly! One of those nail guns looks handy, what little studwork i've done with screws felt like they kept pulling the timber out of position every time I tighten them!

I got the Milwaukee framing nailer a couple of weeks ago and have to say that I much prefer it to a paslode, it is a little heavy though.

Cumbrians don't need tea breaks, they are like those moorland sheep, bred for hardship. The worst thing to do is soften them up.

Good looking work as always leads, I was wondering why you have a block under the sole plate, will make extra effort for you when running pipes or cables
The pipes and cables are all in. The floor will be half way up that block by the time it is poured on the insulation.

You won't need treated timber but it will need to be to have the right moisture content and graded depending upon the work your undertaking hope that helps 🔨

There is insulation and liquid screed to go in. The studwork is above the screed. Often it is built on top of the screed but this is a better way.

With the stud wall being attached to the block work does the timber need any sort of protection from the wall absorbing moisture/water from outside and rotting the timber attached to it? Or causing mould on the plasterboard once finished?
So like a polythene sheet? Or vapour/membrane material?
The insulation and screed will come up to the sole plate. The whole of the sub floor is protected from damp by a membrane so there is no need for a further dpc.
What were the fixings used to secure against brickwork?

CT-1 polymer adhesive.
I was just thinking that serves no purpose of its grab adhesive etc

Anyone know what type of screws he's using? Are they Atlas Bolts or something similar?
With that frame being on top of a block course, I would have made that frame on the ground first (squared up et al) and then fixed it to the block work and chamber joists, only my preference though.

That is a good way to do it and they often do it that way but not this time.

Sure you want your plasterboard breaking in line with a door lining?
I must admit, where possible I build my stud walls as a frame first on the floor then put it place, it’s so much easier to level a frame than Individual pieces, couple of wedges at the top to hold it and you can fine tune for plumb.
I prefer the making up frames method too although nowadays that method isnt as popular with site joiners. I think the fact that you dont get to see any sticks up in the first 5 seconds messes with their heads. If the storey heights are pretty accurate we cut every upright in the house the same length to the tightest point.
We always put dpc on any timbers touching bricks/blocks

The dpm is under the concrete so it is fine. There is an interesting discussion to be had on that point because people often place a dpc under old oak framed buildings when they are replacing the sole plate and the timbers rot in no time. The revised way is to place the dpc under the course below so the brickwork can pull the moisture out of the timber.
I need to know more plumbers if they give out kit like that.

The DeWalt saw suddenly disintegrated and they were waiting for some spare parts to rebuild the guard. This old Evolution was languishing in the shed, it isn't great because it kept going out of square but it got us out of trouble.
We have a new Festool coming but they are in short supply right now so it could be a few weeks.
It’s actually not a bad little saw, it must only be 3kg in weight. And for something as simple as a stud wall or for any work up on the scaffolding it’s well handy.
I have this saw for metal and plastic as it a multi material voltage. It's only £60 and doesn't take up a lot of space as a second saw.
@@SkillBuilder You don't want to be using a festool on framing timber. It is often quite wet, and the KS 120 just doesn't have the balls to deal with it. Replacement motor after a year, under warranty. Another year, another motor, sadly not under warranty.
Bought the cordless hitachi for framing, keep the festool just for 2nd fix and joinery

Hello there. I didn’t need to use plugs for these. They are framing fixings. They are 7.5mm gauge, and you use a 6.5mm SDS. Check them out they are a very good screw

Why don't builders use patterns? They are constantly measuring with flexible tapes which aren't easy to use - especially when there is nothing to hook the end over - and difficult to see in poor lighting. I would have thought a set of commonly used lengths in true aluminium would save hours; and be more accurate. No?

Pro tip, save yourself some time and hassle by skipping the pre-drilling, no need to switch drills if the masonry bit in your SDS machine is reasonably sharp, it will drill through wood just fine. Just turn off the hammer mechanism to drill through a post, turn it on once you reach the stonework.
I've never had a problem just buzzing through on hammer tbh
