I have made spirals like that using a cut off sledge hammer handle and a pocket knife. Thing you will do when board at work

I made spirals only ONCE as it is demonstrated here then, the next time I did them on an engine lathe. I mounted the wooden piece between centers then set my halfnut for a certain thread pitch and used a rounded lathe tool to make the design and had the lathe automatically cut the spiral design. When done I oil finished with Tung oil followed by Linseed oil rubbed onto the wood and when hard I used Silicon Carbide papers of varying finer grits.I began with 320 grit and ended with 2500 grit.
