Three students from West Bank shot in Vermont, (one wearing a keffiyeh),; 5 year old boy killed and mother seriously wounded by their landlord in Chicago in addition to recent pool incident in Texas show the need for Muslim protection as well. When I was a kid, back in the 70's, my parents took a trip to Israel. They brought gifts for the family -- Hanukkah menorahs, jewelry, things like that. I got a kaffiyeh and agal as a gift, and it was the coolest thing ever. I wore that get-up all over the place. It saddens me to hear that garment besmirched with such a disgusting accusation.
Honestly, this is not new. Back around 2004 there was a cooking show host named Rachel Ray who was featured in a Dunkin Donuts print ad.
In the ad she was wearing a black and white checkered scarf. I don’t remember exactly what it looked like, but it was not a keffiyeh, and that lady is not political, more like Martha Stewart, she sells cook books and home oriented goods.
Anyway, it was a big scandal at the time, people were claiming she was wearing a keffiyeh, and built into that claim is that there’s something innately wrong with a keffiyeh.
What’s also funny about all this is that after the Iraq war, a lot of these red neck types who dress up as the military also wear keffiyehs on YT videos, but they are olive green. They still use the same Arab weave patterns, but these people are generally racist types.
Why is it okay for them to wear their knock off garbage? Why even if there is utility in that item of clothing, do they copy the same weave pattern as what the Arabs wear?

Anyway, I live in the rural Midwest and can confirm there are rednecks who wear keffiyehs. They avoid using that word, though, and stick to calling them shemaghs or my personal favorite, "tactical scarves". 😂

I lived through it, and it was so bizarre how Americans view this cultural item as a symbol of trrism and all that. It would be like an Arab seeing someone with a cowboy had and interpreting that as a symbol of evil, etc.
Clearly there have become political connotations associated with the particular color and weave pattern of the particularly Palestinian style of keffiyeh (the one that’s black and white and looks like a fence pattern), but really their whole culture has become political over the past several decades.
What I mean to say is that you have in some cases members of the same (extended) family, some of whom reside within Israel proper, and some reside in the Occupied Territories. The latter will be very different culturally, because their whole culture is based on themes of resistance, sacrifice, etc.
It’s a unique social phenomenon that over the course of several decades, one people have been separated into a group that is relatively well off, and a group that deals with military occupation, land incursion, etc.
The Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza have developed a very different culture than the Palestinians within Israel, their collective experiences are very different, etc.
Real estate theft of Palestinian land seems to be not only legal in the US but “ defended” by the government and media. And calling it theft “illegal”

the keffiyeh started out as a head scarf worn by men in rural palestine, iirc. it only came to represent all of palestine after resistance to the british occupation, and further extended by resistance to israeli occupation

Elizabeth Wolf, a Jewish woman, tried to get the older child first but he got away. She then got hold of the 3 year old girl and held her under the water until a black man at the same pool was able to rescue her. Wolf continued to threaten to kill the family while the police took her away. She bonded out, to go back home to this same apartment complex where this family lives.

I greatly admired Van Jones early in his career but you know what they say about "meeting your heroes."
