I go from my SM57 to a compressor and then the 2i2. The USB goes to the computer and I use VoiceMeter to tell it where to go. I have the mic channel set to mono and on the output I have the left channel going to my 7300 and my right channel going to my 991A. Now if the computer doesn't have a built in sound card, Signalink, Ultimate Radio Interface or etc, this won't work.
I think the reason for the fourth pin on an XLR4 is for the push to talk circuit, not because it's stereo. I have a Heil HM-12 and it has a PTT on the mic, I'm sure that's the purpose of the fourth pin.
There’s two mics the Prosonus Revelator dynamic and Beacn mic have the digital audio interface built in as well as a routing table to send the audio to the radio.
I have used the E1 with POTA for a few years now, what works for ME is replacing the SO239 with an LDG 4:1 voltage Balun and three 33' RAISED radials. Internal tuner on the 7300 works wonders, lots of QSO's lots of DX on this antenna. After moving to the IC705 as my main POTA rig, I now use alternative antenna systems than this one. HOWEVER it is still a highly successful antenna and I would still to this day recommend the E1 any day of the week. @Josh, very well said on the comments about use what works for you and get on the air 73 de W4CHF
I use Audio Technica DR-140's, vocals mics. That high end mic s good for more than eSSB, it has cleaner and EVEN coverage in the voice range we use. That crisp sounding audio grabs attention in a pile-up I use LMR240 patch cables for HF, LMR400UF for 2m and up... the LMR400 can be a pain but once it is formed to where the radio sits it works okay
Hi, great video, as always. I have an Icom 7300 and received for Christmas a Microphone Heil PR 781. To get some more gain can I add only a cloud lifter? right now I have to push mic gain to 100 % and Comp to 8/9. thanks in advance.
Hey Josh, regarding the TR-22. When you plug 12v into the external jack, the positive side of the one of battery clips is energized. It will short to ground if it touch the chassis. This WILL let the smoke out. Ask me how I know. The first radio I ever bought as a new technician was a TR-22C. This was in 1976. It cost $150. Used. I still have it. Somewhere.
I have been trying to run a 1955 664 studio microphone with my yaesu 101 & 401 radios. It came with a simple 2 pin 1/4 plug. The plug on the mic end is a 4 pin. I've not been able to figure out how to hook it up.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I'll have to figure it out when it gets here I got the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen USB coming only has input in front and a USB 2 in back. So I'm confused lol

@@Pawoodsman i’ve been trying to figure out the same thing and i’m pretty sure the unmentioned part is a 1/4” TRS to XLR adapter to convert the output. because even the 4i4 only has 2 XLR *inputs*, no XLR outputs. just line.
Josh I have one of those drakes giving to me by a friend who is a silent key now. I have been trying find information but very limited. Would appreciate more info. What batteries does it take? Power output wattage?
I recently got my Scarlett 4i4 and got it hooked up to my radio. However, when I transmit, I get reports of a lot of QRM. I disconnect from the focus right and go straight into the radio, then I get 59 reports. What am I missing? I’m not really looking into streaming as much as doing training videos for a couple of friends who I’m trying to get into ham radio. Any help would be appreciated.
Josh- just came across this, recently got an audio interface and blue yeti usb mic for good price. unsure of how to connect to interface, computer, and rig. using the hand held mic that came with radio. ideas anyone?
Hi Josh, I have a behringer EQ. I want to send that to my IC7300 but the output is RCA. Can I go RCA to "RCA -XLR Adapter then the Heil CC-1-XLR-I Mic Adapter Cable? Thank you and really enjoy your videos.
Any issues connecting the Scarlett 4i4 directly into the front of your radio? The Scarlett 4i4 outputs line level signals, not mic level. (+4dBu) while, I believe the radio needs -40dBu. How do you connect them? Are you using something like a DI to match the signal level of the mixer to what the radio needs? Also, are you worried about phantom power from your radio getting into the Scarlett 4i4?
Totally agree with your comment. The Adapter at 13:11 is xlr to 8 pin. @HamRadioCrashCourse From what I can see the scarlet doesn’t output on xlr only line out so I can’t see what use this is, fine for mic direct to radio but that’s not the point of the video. As you say needs some sort of level reduction surely?
I’ve had a brain fart up until this point when it comes to the audio routing here. As far as the connection routing goes for the audio, You’re going from microphone to one of the inputs of the scarlet which is connected to the computer via usb. Now from the audio interface, you’re going out from one of the line outputs via TRS to XLR to the xlr connector of the Heil adapter which is connected to the radio via the modular connector?
I have the same Scarlett. The output into the xlr adapter into the ic 7300 causes distortion every time I hit my floor switch. No I idea why. Any thoughts?
I get carrying a QRP radio to get 6m and 10m but there used to be HTs that did that. Why did those go away they have a good RF characteristics and would be nice to have something in a small form factor.
So please respond..I purchased the focusrite 2i2 and the heli adapter for my yaesu 857. Your picture on where the mike goes and the pc is ok but then the adapter has a connecter to the mike input on my radio..no problem, a ptt, I prefer vox. But we're does the 4 pin XLR plug into the focusrite???? 73 ..marco
I also do not understand why he has the Yeasu 8-pin to XLR Heil adapter. He said during the video that he goes out of one of the 1/4" jacks on the back and into the ham radio. So, it would seem like a simpler Yaesu 8-pin to 1/4" or 1/8" mic and 1/4" PTT sockets would be easier. I'm just not seeing why the XLR adapter is needed from the 2i2. Did you figure it out?
@darrenhoads4874 a little late to the party here but I may be able to clarify at least one thing if you haven’t figured it out. He’s using the Heil adapter because it’s splits. It has the modular connector that goes into the input of the radio. Then it splits off to a female xlr connector. From the output of the interface he’s using a 1/4” trs to xlr male adapter to connect from the output of the interface to the the xlr connection of the adapter. Then the 1/4” plug on the adapter goes to a foot switch or something to activate the push to talk.
I am doing this setup right now, how do you get the audio from your 7610 to your mixer? When I hook up my headphone jack to the mixer I get a steady hum.
I use a separate mixer for shack audio. All my radios have and audio jack that goes to a separate mixer. The thing you need to keep in mind is the impedance. Line level, vs Mic-level. My mixer has a push button toggle that allows each input to use either.

That’s pretty slick.
I use a very similar setup but only for 1 radio. I love it that’s way as the mic can be used for the pc as normal and for the radio at the same time !
1.75 crew here. Use 1.25 for videos so the visual isn't crazy. Thank you for the videos, got my tech with your help!

On a ptt, you can find a cheap keyboard volume pedal at a goodwill store for not many dollars. Solder on whichever plug end you need

Nice and how do you switch between HF and VHF radio with a computer.
Would I need a cloudlifter for a PR40 and a 991A?
Without a mixer in line, maybe.
Ribbon mics especially need a pre-amp. Cloudlifters work perfectly.
I have the same Scarlett. The output into the xlr adapter into the ic 7300 causes distortion every time I hit my floor switch. No I idea why. Any thoughts?

There were a few. They weren’t incredibly popular. And the power output on 10/6 was pretty poor.

That would depend on the mic. So maybe.

the 599 radio looks the part, shame about the price in the current situation. :/
As a sound engineer I can say that not everything with an XLR-connector is "professional".
Lol sure. I was explaining what people mean when they say the term.
160m and 80m are high bands since "High/low bands" is determined by wavelength not frequency. Just a quirk from the origin of the ham universe. W1LDL
