How To Replace Mercedes Thermostat (W204 C300) FCP Euro

- ► When performing maintenance on your Mercedes' cooling system you are bound to lose some coolant. This Genuine coolant is the best choice when it comes time to refill your cooling system. This coolant is designed to protect your radiator and engine from corrosion.
Due to supply chain issues, we are currently only able to offer BMW Genuine coolant. This G48 coolant is also compatible in all Mercedes Q1030002 and Q1030004 applications. The easiest way to determine this is that it's blue in color.
Due to the age of Q1030002 if original fill, it should be drained, flushed, and replaced with the modern Q1030004 fluid.
This fluid comes from BMW undiluted (100% strength). We recommend mixing this coolant with distilled water in a 50/50 coolant/water mix for most climates, for cold climates you will be better served mixing this coolant in a 60/40 coolant/water mix.

I replaced the thermostat by myself by watching your video. Great details. Thank you so much.
engin toksoz Awesome news, glad to hear it helped. --Kyle
How do you know the thermostat is bad
Thank you so much for this video. My mom has never allowed anyone to work on her 2007 C280 other than Mercedes dealerships, but she wanted to save money and needed this done so she entrusted me to do it since she knows I like to work on my own car. I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I know enough to get some things done. I used your video as a reference when needed just to double-check my work as I disassembled things. Very helpful for a gal like me!
you guys rock. got the kit, watched the video and replaced thermostat in 2 hours all together.
Dusan Vukicevic thanks! --Kyle
Thanks guys, used your tutorial tonight to switch out the thermostat in my 2007 C280, very similar process. I haven't worked on engines much, but I managed to change it out in about an hour and now she's running great and maintaining a constant temp. Thanks again!
Sometimes it’s hard when u don’t hv money to get fix ur car. But a person like u gave me a lot idea n helps to fix my car. Which is I am gonna fix my car soon. Thank u man. God bless u all.
That's exactly our goal! We are happy to help, Bereket!
AWESOME VIDEO! Parts, labor and tax at the dealer $642! Bought your kit on sale and shipped in 2 days for $120. Did the job on an hour and 25 minutes
I just ordered your kit. The dealer wanted $750.00 for this repair! Thanks!
You're welcome!
Thanks for this video - saved us ~$400 by purchasing your kit! It would be helpful if you had placed a list of the necessary tools up above, although I know they're called out in the video - E10 & E14 Torx Sockets, T30 Torx Bit Socket, Deep 17mm, etc.
Brett Shiring thanks brother
Thank you so much for your Demonstration. I just had my car done on today 12/25 it’s really really save me great mount of money. Happy Christmas every one.
Thanks for creating this video. Awesome job of showing the detailed steps.
Gareth ! Thanks for the amazing videos/tutorials. Not only this one but also others are very informative, step by step procedures with very clear explanations. I just discovered FCP Euro and planning to shop there in the near future. Thanks for helping all of us DIYs. ;)
This video is super helpful and I also replaced the thermostat on my 2008 E350 (W211). My only issue when replacing was removing the old faulty thermostat but I got it removed and cleaned the area with some of the old gasket with a razor blade too. Thanks for the DIY video guide.
No minute intro no telling us about things irrelevant to the video. Straight and detailed how it should be.
Great video. You can't make a better instructional video than this!
Great video! It really helped me out a lot. I tried to take a short cut but that never worked so I followed your instructions and completed the job. I took it to a local parts store to clear the error code and they said it had to be cleared at the dealership so I drove it to another parts store and they were able to clear the error code. Not all parts stores have the same code readers so it does make a difference. I found that AZ is the best place to take it to...
AT 9:09, you say you push back the hose clip before reinserting the hose. Its designed to leave the hose clip in the locked position and simply push the hose back into the thermostat orifice. Much quicker and you'll know when it's locked in. Thanks for the video. Very helpful.
You have no idea how helpful your video was while changing m 2008 C300’s thermostat. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻
So glad to hear it was helpful for you, Ben! Thanks for watching!
Hi Ben I have the same model but after my thermostat was change I wasn't getting any heat in the cabin of the car anymore. Please help in you can. Thank you
@@smilelove6875 mine worked fine. you may have a bad thermostat or it may be stuck if you installed it incorrectly but I think it only fits one way and it would be hard to install it incorrectly.
Great video on thermostat replacement. Gave bit and socket sizes, and precautions for the job. Thanks guys
Any time +Rod Thorn!
As always FCP is awesome! I'm going to use this video for our w211 since it's identical! Bought my parts from you guys as well! Keep it up!
Useful video. I'm replacing the stock thermostat this weekend on my 2010 C250. I'm pretty sure it has failed. Love working on these small cars, they remind me of my e46 I had a lot of fun workin on before.
Great video, the step by step was very good. So many video leave out key steps..Thanks man
Very helpful video. The 3.5 litre engines in the 2012-2014 models have a different configuration, though. Don’t need to remove vacuum pump or idler pulley on those, but is very tricky to remove one of the three screws holding the thermostat on due to the position of the hose running from the air filter to the intake manifold. Regardless, I was able to successfully replace my thermostat after watching this video.
Because of your awesome video, I was able to change the thermostat on my 07 ML350. The thermostat from MB cost me $190. However, I saved on the hourly repair cost of $150. Two thumbs way up!
Idk if you’ll see this but I just got quoted 1200$ for a thermostat replacement
@@shown2grow737I just got quoted $750 you know we’re going DIY baby!!! 😂
This guy's video is awesome. It saved me $500 at the mechanic.
+1 for internet information!

Ordered the kit and doing it Sunday. Fingers crossed!!!
Thanks again. Always helps me fix my wife's c300. 👍👍👍
Was it easy to reinstall the belt? I can really see in the video how he looped the belt back on the pulleys.
Great how to video. Very details and informative. Thank you.
Thanks for the video! I just fixed my C300 2012 in less than 2hrs.
You're welcome!
Depending on mileage if you are planning a thermostat replacement on some models it should be negligible extra labor to change the water pump, thermostat, tensioners, idler pulley and serpentine belt all at the same time. If done correctly it can save you from having to go back in a second time. This also gives a good baseline of wear for future tracking.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!! This totally helped me with my GLK.
You're welcome Brian! Glad to hear it helped.
Just finished doing mine thank you !!!! $450 saved!!!
Nice work, Couch Mayne!
Very helpful. I've just done this job on our 2007 R171 SLK280 UK spec. helped by your video. A few comments. There is less space in front of the engine on an SLK. I found it easier to remove the vacuum pump first, then do the belt work. Removing the final screw holding the bracket for the vacuum switch or sensor on the front right of the engine makes getting the vacuum pump off and on easier around all those small hoses. I syphoned all the coolant out of the expansion bottle with a soft narrow hose and had little loss when the thermostat was pulled out. Initially I hadn’t realised that the 17mm socket is located on a boss on the belt tensioner not its central screw.
Thank you for the notes, Chris!
this is an amazing video. wish i had a list of tools i will need for this procedure. i’ve jotted down most of them as i have watched.
Great DIY video...FCP the best parts in CT, European Cars❤
Great video now do one on changing the temperature sending unit lol That is a fun one .
Great video on how to replaced had a code for the thermostat and replaced it. Using this video.
Was it easy to reinstall the belt?
After watching this video I think every step was pretty easy until reinstalling the belt. Can't really see how he looped it back the pulleys.
Great video man. Glad you beat the rain!!
Especially wanted to add a thank you for calling out the tool sizes as you progressed. That’s super helpful to throw them into the bag before starting.
Great video! Love it, saves you a ton of money
This was a perfect video, thanks for sharing
Thanks my cars check engine light just came on yesterday the code read coolant thermostat , this video helped explain everything
It's Simply Great that you found the video helpful! Thanks for watching!
Just changed mine out thanks to this video. Easy pezy! Thanks FCP!
What year was your c250
Excellent! job. I would have gotten lost in returning all the parts in place.
Glad it helped!
Thank you, it is easy with your video in my car 2008 c300 👌👍 seved 600
Great job my guy!! Thank you
Now let's just hope the same way apply to a 2012 c300
Howd it go?
Awesome video! Very helpful 👍😊
awesome video!!! I'm sure you have saved a lot of people a lot of money.

You're welcome, Kieran! Happy to help!
Just ordered the kit for the 06 c230 sport... hoping to be putting this on Saturday... wish me luck
Javier, if you are referring to the temp sensor, it's on the back of the drivers side cylinder head. --Kyle

You're welcome! Glad to hear it helped you out.
Great video, I may end up replacing my thermostat for my 2011 C300,m and this video will definitely help me, but I was looking for information on a possible bad thermovalve; are they connected?
Great tutorial, needed this, to do my in law's C300, wondering why you didn't use some silicone grease on the thermostat o-ring or sealant on the gasket
hi all very helpful video thanks guys
Excellent video.
Thanks for the DIY!! i will have to do this on my c350 tomorrow.. quick question.. is the Thermostat suppose to sound like it have something rattling inside of it? i just want to make sure that is how it suppose to sound.. any help would be appreciated!
thanks
Great video, got the po128 code so I will be doing this job this weekend.
Thanks for the love, glad it helps you out!
@@fcpeuro definetely! just ordered the kit you posted the link for.
Awesome video!
To answer some questions about pulling the stat to drain the fluid.
It's easier than draining the radiator and the entire system which can create a bigger air pocket in the system and sometimes the drain plug on the lower side of the radiator is plugged up or snaps off upon removal.
I remove the belly pans from underneath and just pull the thermostat to drain then clean everything off gently with a water hose.
Always test drive the vehicle as it will dry all the excess water on the engine and you can check for proper heat and recheck for leaks as the engine is hot and again once it cools, then recheck fluid again.
It's not necessary to remove the air pump to gain access.....you can flex the pump a bit or looses the mount screws on the pump for more flex.
TheAutumnWinter
^^^This....plus it’s not necessary to remove the hose from the thermostat housing either.
Just making more work for yourself.
IMO....these O ring hose fittings are a terrible design.
Mercedes loves to design things to break prematurely.
Being a Benz tech I’ll tell you that Mercedes quality sucks.
I’ve had much better results from Ford products.
The only things I’ve ever replaced on my 2007 Ford E250 van was a turn signal bulb and regular maintenance items like brakes, oil changes and filters.
Just perfect, best DIY till now. Garage ATU in germany ask me 150€ to do it! I did in just 30 minuts. Vacumpump i just lose the screws, the space was enough.
Very Descriptive and informational good video I have 2009 C300 4Matic on OBD the message was thermostat closed or not fully open, salesman at a local auto part was describing as it is ok to drive it might take a little to open the valve temp. gauge is still the same as usual what now need your feed back if possible
Excellent presentation....!!!!!!!!
Thanks Willard!
On a 2009 C300, the air injection pump has 5 screws not 4. Two screws are on top and 3 at the bottom . 2 of the screws which are at the bottom are attached to a bracket and underneath them, there is a longer screw which attaches the pump to the engine.
Thanks for the very helpful video!! Got a 2011 c350 with 30k kms. CEL lit up yesterday and scanner says P0128 (coolant thermostat). I wonder if i need to replace it right away or is it still drivable? My engine temp is still normal at 90deg. Should i replace that thermostat then ? Thanks!
You are welcome. The thermostat should absolutely sound like something is rattling inside of it. There is a small metal ball in the bleed hole that should freely move around.
good job guys it was helpful
Thanks, Oraw! Glad you found it helpful!
TERIMA KASIH MR. SUKSES SELALU..
Thank you for this vid you saved me question where is the sensor located?
Great job.
impressive...thank you
Great video very well done thanks.
Appreciate the video, good job! I may have to change out the thermostat on my 2010 C300 Sport and this will come in handy. I'm getting P0128 error from scanner and the most common fix appears to be either the thermostat or engine coolant temperature sensor. Car is running fine with no fault indicators but having a hard time trying to locate engine coolant temperature sensor on my model and was wondering if you could via video/pic show me where it's located. Any assistance appreciated.
very good video, I have the same repair to do on my mercedes, can I have the torque if you have them, thank you
Good video bro
You made that look really easy. Thanks for the video.
Thanks. Great video and do more.
Awesome!! Thank you
THANKS!
Thanks for the video. Do you know if the M272 engine is direct injection or conventional injection?
I will try this next time . 😂😂😂wish me luck😂😂
Nice video. I would add that any o-rings like to be lightly coated with oil, or grease, before being pushed into the hole!
Great point!
Danke dir....Sehr gut!!!
Hello guys thanks for helping people by uploading these videos.. I was wondering what scan tool can i use to find the codes for the check engine light... Thank you in advance you guys are awsome... I will need a thermostat for MB c300 2010 and i will lime to buy it from you guys... Not MB.. If you are helping you deserve all of should buy from you!!!
Gracias amigo
good job
I showed my mechanic this video and he did the job for 100.00 I bought the parts from FCP 113.00 total of 213 in stead of 512.00 at the dealership. He said that this is not a 500.00 job. Thank you Gareth Foley. Merry Christmas 2014.
Do you know if you got the check engine light with code p0128 (coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature) or was it some other code that came up for you to replace the thermostat?
very very good!! tnx!! ^^
awesome video, easy to follow. thank you FCP.
my 2007 c300 mercedez benz "engine check" icon came on my dash board with a code P0128 indicating "thermostat coolant temperature" and below says "thermostat regulating temp".
i am using an OTC OBD2 scan tool to diagnose my car.
i replaced the thermostat and put new coolant and the temperature on my dash board now showing a bit above 80degC fluctuate to 90degC top.
the "check engine lights" coded P0128 is erased and gone now.
is this normal after i replaced the thermostat? please help. thank you.
i am watching the dash board temp closely if it will rise beyond as indicated above but it stays the same 80deg to 90 degC top for 2 days now.
thanks again for your input.
James, the check engine light will require an OBD2 code scanner to reset it. Any handheld OBD2 code scanner should fit the bill.
FCP Euro
I have to perform this same service. Would you recommend also replacing the accessory belt and idler pulleys while down there?
Good job
Please could you do a video for W205 C class? I'd really appreciate it, thanks.
Brilliant video but I need some troubleshooting help. When I pulled out the thermostat housing, the thermostat stayed in the engine. What do I do?
Good morning
Hi, Gareth I watch your videos all the time like to learn more new every day. Thank you so much ,very well explain I have c350 mercedes-Benz. 2008 I like to work myself. Enjoy doing that. Can you please make the video how to replace oil filter housing assembly I do appreciate it. I’m not sure you might already make the video I cannot found. Please advise. Thanks.
