As a foreigner learning English, I have to say the RP British accent is very pleasant for my ears. If accent is like music, RP accent will be top of the chart.
Agreed.
100%! 👍👍👍
Teacher Katharine, thank you. You are amazing. I lived in the UK for almost 3 years and a half, I always made an effort to speak clearly, that really helped me to make friends too. You have a beautiful voice and clear pronunciation speaking..now I'm curious to hear you singing 🤗
Thank you so much for your comment! Yes I may put up a video of one of my songs soon 😊
Thank you so much for giving us the explanation. You're so beautiful, gentle, and so on. Min, please make the video of Common Phrases for Teeneger. Thanks advance.

@@englishwithkatharine hi kath ur eyes break my heart

Although I had already known the secrets before this video I found your work amazing. I love your British accent and I try to copy it as much as I can! Thanks, Katherine!
thank you! Sooo much 😊
أنا مبتدئ في الإنجليزية وأجد عائق التعلم لا أعرف الطريقة التي أبدأ بها لقد شكل لي هذا عائق كبير وشكرا لكم
Back by the end of the 80s, when I was a student of English as a foreign language I was totally hooked on the IPA (International phonetic alphabet), it was for me the bible of pronunciation, and it came to my rescue when I had very little guidance to practice my speaking skills. I learnt a lot with it, and ever since then I loved pronunciations, got rid of judgemental comments about other accents: It just unveiled the beauty of pronunciation sounds, regardless of nationality or baundaries. Nevertheless, the British English that I learnt since my very first classes was and forever will be my beloved pronunciation.
oh my God Katherine, not only did you make me fall in love with British accent but with you too.....thank you for your beautiful illustration.
I am in love too.
This is the best teacher I saw. She has the ability and competency to explain.❤
This has just made my day since I was desperately trying to upgrade my accent with no success
🙏🙏🤗
@@englishwithkatharine hi
The lessons you often give us are a universal service, thank you teacher Katharine they are very useful for me
I came across this video randomly and found it interesting. The way you have explained the two secrets of the British English accent is commendable.
Hope to learn more from you. Thanks.
Oh thank you so much 😊😊☺️☺️
@@englishwithkatharine You are most welcome.

I think I've already proven that I'm a gentleman in every comment I make about Professor Katharine, it's truly incredible how I always learn something that reinforces my knowledge of the English language, once again thank you for the light you gave me so I could consolidate my knowledge of the English language. 2nd language that I like the most after Portuguese, I'm sure that very soon I won't need a Portuguese-English translator, I hope I haven't been exaggerated in my praise because my only objective is to praise the knowledge that you convey through the various videos that I have already you published
Hi Katharine.Thank you for teaching us British accent secret so we can sound like a native speaker.
You're so welcome!😊
Thanks your tiching me
What a wonderful and beautiful teacher.I like your teachings very much.❤
Thank you and welcome 🙏🙏🤗🤗
@@englishwithkatharine Thank you Madam❤️
Hi Catherine!
In Brazil, where I come from, the american accent is the one taught in schools and English courses. Since we aren't exposed to the British accent it sounds a little cocky, kind of artificial to us, but as to myself, I simply love it.
Best regards from Rio.
I can totally understand that! 😊
Hey! 😊 I wanted to let you know that I’m trying to watch old British movies because of your review on "My Fair Lady". I searched for it but couldn’t find it on any platform. But I’m so glad your review inspired me to explore these classics. They seem so much clearer and more refined than current English movies. Thanks again for the great recommendation!
Thanks🤗best of my British teacher☺️
Thank you for enlightening and educating me through your channel.
I’m so glad you like it 😊😊☺️☺️
I am a Nigerian and I love the British accent so much. I am learning to speak like them even if not like them exactly❤
Your video is very nice, Katherine! And I love how you switch between your lovely RP and other Englishes :-). But I would refer to the phonetic context in one of your examples of silent 'r' as pre-consonantal rather than post-vocalic (i.e. ; or , , , etc.). We can thus account for words like or , in which [r] is definitely sounded. Great job again!
Thanks for amazing lesson! I really love your accent and teaching style! Looking forward more British pronunciations lesson!
More to come!😊😊
I have fallen in love of you because of your teaching skills.
Yes, as you say, I also think accent and pronunciation are musical. So I believe that people with a musical ear who are good at singing are good at pronunciation. I'm gonna ask someone for a musical ear for my birthday present this year! haha
Haha what an excellent comment 😊
I love your channel. ❤ Amazing tips. Thanks!!! A Big hug from Argentina 😊
I've never dreamed of having a British accent while Learning English.
Your body language speaks methods of teaching too which is brilliant
For me speaking English is just like singing a song, so I'm keen on the videos about sounds ! Keep up the good work ! 🎸
Yay! I totally agree!! 🎉
You are a Gorgeous teacher Katharine.
I love your videos and I am learning a lot with you.
Thank you for great lesson.
Hi Katherine, I really like your channel , the way you teach and your very british and sweet accent. Have you thought about creating some pronunciation/vocabulary course ? I’d definitely sign up for it ❤
Yes I’ve definitely thought about making a course - I will in the future for sure!! 😊
in brief:
In the video, Catherine, an English language instructor, shares two secrets to mastering the modern received British accent.
The first secret is mastering the "alphabet A" sound.
This sound is characteristic of the British accent and is notably present in the sentence, "The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plane."
This sound, which she terms as the "alphabet A" sound, is similar to the pronunciation of the letter 'A' in the English alphabet.
She emphasizes the need to open your mouth while making this sound.
Examples of other words that contain this sound include day, way, Thursday, delay, pay, say, gray, great, potato, inflation, contagious, and tame.
The second secret is the handling of the 'R' sound.
Catherine notes that in the British accent, the 'R' sound is often reduced or completely removed, which sets the British accent apart from the American accent.
For instance, the British pronunciation of the word "water" lacks the 'R' sound and has a pronounced 'T' sound, unlike the American pronunciation.
The 'R' sound is only pronounced when it comes after a consonant or at the beginning of a word.
She provides a sentence for practice: "You really take such good care of your hair. Could you share with me your hair care secrets?"
Catherine encourages viewers to practice these sounds and offers to correct any pronunciation queries in the comments section.
She concludes the video by expressing her love for teaching pronunciation, likening it to music, and encourages her viewers to subscribe for more lessons.
Is this necessary? 😅
@@englishwithkatharine it's just a memory sheet ,I am learning English
Of course, I also have many problems with pronunciation. I was happy, you reminded me of the film "My fair Lady" in my Youth. I was fortunately already 14, so I was allowed to watch this movie. At first, I didn't want to see it, but my older brother pursued me and I did not regret this decision. The film was so popular, that it over 20 weeks would be played in Dresden.
Thanks for your efforts to show interesting topics.
Lovely film isn’t it 😊
Quite a nice and informal way of teaching some of English "tricks". I would really fancy if you did an episode on the English spoken on the TV series Blackadder by Hugh Laurie, as a soldier in WW1. That is absolutely genious!
I will be ungrateful if idont appreciate your lesson. I've just came across your channel, you are amaizing. Regards from Tanzania
An excellent explanation. ❤❤❤
Worked as a teacher in UK for 3 yrs.
🤗🤗🤗
@@englishwithkatharine you are too good. 👍👍👍
I just love your content , what can I say except from beautiful . If you want to know it , then I will recognise that hearing or speaking or reading by British accent is like a therapy for me , and although some people say that British accent is boring and too slow ( A friend of mine said that it's so polite until she can't hearing it 😅 ) , but I disagree with all of them and I'll say it again and again : Chic and elegant is British and I'm a big fan of British culture either they like it or not ! ❤❤
You took me back to the good old times of watching movies borrowed from the city / university libraries - Rex Harrison singing "the rain in Spain" and then the Hunchback movie (BBC perhaps) where Anthony Hopkins says "she gave me water"....
🤗🤗
One of the best videos on UA-cam concerning British Pronunciation.
Thank you!! 😊

I love the content of your channel and the way with which you deliver the lessons. Thank you, Katharine🌷
You are so welcome! 😊😊😊
Exciting to see your post every day
😍😍
This video made me more clear how to use R sounds. Thanks mam
Not everyone in The UK speaks like her. English is my native language, I am from Canada and when I traveled to England I had some trouble understanding what people were saying. North American English (Canada and The US) is the English accent everyone understands. We enunciate the words more clearly. I have never had problems with people understanding what I say.
Hey! Of course not everyone in U.K. speaks like me, that is a hilarious concept. I make it clear that I teach modern RP spoken in south of England (London etc) which is my expertise. I don’t think it’s ever fair to say ANY any accent is the easiest to understand. This is not a competition. Your comment suggests it is.
Another Canadian native speaker here and specifically born and raised in Toronto. He wasn’t trying to make anything a competition. Our accent is neutral and it is easier for many people learning English to understand us, including the American mid-Atlantic accent. Your example of the non-rhotic sound is often a nightmare for people learning English lol
I like your pronunciation so much!
What a wonderful lesson .
So glad you think so!! 🙏😊
@@englishwithkatharine sure it is .
Prnounciation is phonetic and it is science only Dr. Katharine taking very gud care of it in her teaching n rest times
4:37, theoretically speaking, the word tame isn't a random word where letter a is pronounced /ei/, because it's a vowel-consonant-e syllable. Likewise, ice, bike, mute, rude, eve, delete, behove, home etc., in these words with a vowel-constant-e syllable, that vowel is uttered the same way as in the English alphabet. The only exception to this rule is the word have.
Wonderful video btw! I've learnt interesting stuff from you and your accent sounds splendid. :D I just think this bit is worth mentioning. I'm not a native speaker, and one of my English teachers taught us that back in the day.
Thank you Katherine.🙏🏻🙇🏻♀️
..alright lesson, thant you gorgeous teacher Katharine!
The original line was "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain." But the use of "falls" does not affect what Katherine wanted to say.
Nope! You are incorrect. Original script is with stays.
@@englishwithkatharine You're the one who's incorrect. Your video says "falls" instead of "stays". The original script has "stays" as you admitted. @siuli7933 is right.
Thanks Katharine teacher excelent class about how Is the correct pronuntations ❤
So kind of videos are really mile stones for us.. Because these go through the roots of any concept basically.. So please make more like it.. Not sure about others.. But I'll wait ❤
Will do 😊

Waw! It's really amazing and enjoyable to watch your video.
Thank you,fantastic vid.
Glad you think so 😊☺️
Actually, the cockney accent is referred to the working-class and low-middle class, however, as a sound is not so pleasing, maybe due to the fact that we, as foreigner learners are accustomed to learning the modern received English accent which is highly excellent and acceptable. It really was most interesting this video, we thank you so much, sweet teacher. We love you.
Thank youuuu!! 🤗🙏
❤Sweet Katherine❤your accent is adorable!
RP is the most beautiful accent I've ever heard
I just fell in love with your accent and the sound of your voice
i'm yankee but i'd imagine anybody trying to learn english as a second language would have a hell of a time not only understanding cockney but even moreso imitating it. scottish or northern ireland accents even moreso. i'm american and even i have to pay alot more attention and sometimes even turn up the volume on a device in order to get it and sometimes even then i still don't. and english is my first language (american version).
i worked with a guy from argentina who learned english in argentina before moving to the states and he said the first time he ever heard a british accent he didn't even realize it was the same language. i also speak spanish and there is diversity between areas there too but nowhere near like you find in english.
Really it’s fantastic tips,i enjoy it.thank you,from Bangladesh.
