Mr Straw's House - A tour inside a 1920's Edwardian Home

- Video shows our visit to Mr Straw's House in Worksop Nottinghamshire. This fascinating house is run by the National Trust and is a semi-detached house built in 1905. Mr Straw and his family moved here in 1923 and created a modern Edwardian home that reflected the families status in the community.
Florence the daughter of a Butcher furnished decorated and carpeted the house in the latest styles of the times. However upon their death in the 1930's their sons lived on in the house and living a frugal life had virtual kept the house in its original condition.
The contents of the house some 30,000 items were left to the National Trust in 1990 upon the death of the last remaining son. The neighbouring house had been bought by the sons in 1940 and this was left to the tennents. The Tennents sold the house to the Trust and so they were able to keep the contents in their original place and we can now enjoy looking at a remarkable piece of 1920 history.

A tour around a vanished world.
I particularly like the motivational slogans on one of the posters: “time is money,” “observe,” and “order, promptitude and perseverance.” And I had forgotten other lost details like a bottle of red Quink. Fina and I have really enjoyed watching this video.

It's great that the NT do look after some houses with a more recent history as well as all the grand old houses. We loved the bedspreads and there was an old pottery bed warmer on one of the cupboards. It's a property that you can visit a few times and spot something new each time. I'm 72 and so many of those features I recognise from my childhood. @05:17. I had a fireplace identical to that in my bedroom! I can remember my grandmother used a flat-iron all her life until her death in 1972. She didn't trust electric irons, feeling they were not safe. I love the furniture. It had soul and warmth, unlike the cold sterile designs and materials today.

We live in a Edwardian house which was built in 1909, we are at present trying to put it back to how it was.

This looks like my Grandads house, which I used to visit as a child, it was like stepping back in time, outside toilet, mangle in the kitchen, tin bath on the back of the kitchen door, old radio, even in the late 80s, his house hadn’t changed, just like a museum 😂

Hi Dave and Dawn. Oh how I wish this was closer to me. I'm currently doing a project with the kids on the Edwardian era, and with having Florence's parlour...my Florrie would love that. This house reminds me so much of my father's house when I was a child. He still lived in his parent's house and hadn't touched it so it was very similar to this, but on a much smaller scale. The carpet in the hall has Egyptian pattern and was very expensive at the time so it only goes up the stairs as far as you can see from the door. The staff said that Egyptian things were very popular at the time as Tutankhamens tomb had just been discovered. The house is full of fascinating objects like the bed warmers and the beautiful bedspreads. It's definitely a treasure and good that it's history is recent enough that we can remember it. We have never been but it really does look fascinating. I do hope that the Straws were happy with their lives and that they did not feel trapped in the 1920`s due to any traumatic events. We all keep far too many things around us and it can be difficult to let go of them. It is great for us today to be able to look back through this window to another era but I feel sorry for the family who seem to have got stuck somehow. The National Trust has so much to show us. Hi Ivor and Robert yes it is unusual to hold on to the past although we like to think that they were just very careful and looked after their things. My grandparents were very similar mending things rather than replacing items. I think also as we get older there is a comfort in maintaining the things around us that hold our memories. it made me think about my house growing up. We lived in an old Victorian house but some of the features are similar. Multicoloured glass on the door and the old fireplaces. 😊 only thing missing is an old coal cellar as well.
