Oakham Town Heritage Trail 2025

In this video we visit Oakham, the county town of Rutland, a classic English market town, mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It has a castle, market place, butter cross and stocks, a famous old school, all in close association with a magnificent parish church and arranged in a rectangular shape around which the town has grown.
The manned signal box is the prototype for the Airfix model kit and also features in many Hornby sets. The Great Hall of the castle is Norman and was built between 1180 and 1190 and has a unique collection of horseshoes.
