Rakim Mayers (born October 3, 1988), better known by his stage name ASAP Rocky (stylized as A$AP Rocky), is an American rapper from Harlem, New York City. He is a member of the hip hop collective ASAP Mob, from which he adopted his moniker. Rocky released his debut mixtape Live. Love. ASAP, in 2011 to critical acclaim. The success of his mixtape led to a record deal with Polo Grounds Music, RCA Records, and Sony Music Entertainment. He subsequently recorded his 2013 debut album Long. Live. ASAP, which was also well received by critics and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.org/supportus

People just don't get it, not many rappers could do this type of interview. They would feel too uncomfortable and out of place. ASAP is one of the few rappers that can go to Oxford and be completely authentic. That's what I like about ASAP, he doesn't buy into that confinement mentality. And no one should, we all have the rights to experience different environment. It's the best way to grow.
Calm down. read my previous comment carefully. I said ASAP is one of the "few". Guys like j.cole, kendrick and NAS are obvious candidates. That goes without saying. What I meant is that ASAP can do this interview and be completely raw and authentic. Other rappers can but not all.

The focus should be on what he's saying, not on how he's saying it. Picking apart someone's language is the oldest trick in the book in trying to invalidate what a person is saying. If you cannot see past certain words and focus on their meaning then that's a reflection of your level of intelligence, not the person who is talking.

Rakim is killin it with his crazy charisma
for everyone calling asap an idiot, i see a video with only one apparent SELF MADE person in a room and thats him. and following his true passion. the rest are studying books because thats what society tells them to do. don't get me wrong, nothing bad with school but i am sure that 90% of the people in that room are not just in school because it's their "passion"
i said 90% for a reason. it would be ignorant for me to assume everyone.
even 90 percent is a reach tbh you'd be surprised how many people, at that particular events like my friends that I invited don't fit h
that mould. dont get me wrong tho I fully understand your point
Barmu lol bro it's so much complex than that
Raffy B There might be only one millionaire in the room, but every kid in that room that is heading towards higher education will be the ones that actually make a difference in the world. I'm not knocking Rocky at all and what he has accomplished because I am a fan of his music, but please do not try to devalue the average person in the room; they will be the scientists and doctors that pave the way to our future.

I love watching rockys interviews. He’s well articulate and takes care of himself like no other rapper, no matter what you say about his crew he is an inspiration all around showing us that you can have fun while still being an all around good human being. Good shit flacko
Funny how so many people are blindly dismissing Rocky based on the notion that he's not 'intellectual' enough without considering him at all. No one's providing reasons or any tangible arguments as to why Rocky doesn't belong here, as you would assume an 'intellectual' would do. Everyone's just propagating hate because it's the easiest thing to do when someone challenges your preconceived notions of respectability, especially in an elitist setting like OU. It's nothing but ignorance.
That sounded smart as shit
Any answer to the question wheter he is intelligent or not is ignorance.
a) He is clever not to talk about shit because he isn't supposed to
b) He is stupid not to talk about shit because he doesn't know shit.
c) His opinion is intelligent but the topics unimportant
d) His opinion is stupid because the topics are unimportant.
Just choose whichever you like it does not matter at all.

+Morgan Hyde So impressed you wrote it four times! lol
The real fact is white supremacy thrives off of bigotry and ignorance of those around. Most black men and women are intellectual.
Emmanuel Northe How do you back up that myth lol? I don’t get why you have to go all racial on this one too.
Maybe it’s more to do with him being a rapper and being grown in the streets, not having high education, than about his skin colour?
Just a suggestion?

Rocky has a switch that if you word things a certain way, or assume anything, he's quick to let you know what's up... I fuck with that shit lol

The way, for me, to rate intelligence is how someone can address a person and say something true and meaningful without shouting or screaming. Rocky only says things quietly and confidently, so much better than screaming slogans or using long words and complex sentences.
this is so wholesome for some reason

U K yeah he was probably reminded of this
10:25 "Skip Past All THAT fashion..." I can't remember the actual lyrics but it's in one of his songs
It is SUCH a shame that a room full of otherwise intellectually intelligent people can also be so close-minded and not respect Rocky's perspective. Words are just fucking words. All that matters are your intentions and the context of which you use them in. Just because Rocky says "bitch" or "nigga" doesn't mean he's trying to be derogatory. That is clearly just the world he comes from and what he is comfortable with. Just because some meaningless word is offensive in your mind:
(1) doesn't mean you are right to be offended (2) you have to seriously think about the word(s) that supposedly offended you and WHY? Are you really that weak-minded that all it takes is an amalgamation of letters to set you off? There should be NOTHING anybody can say that negatively impacts your mood. Don't give these words power that isn't there! (3) it isn't anybody's responsibility to sensor themselves around you because you can't open your mind from all of society's bullshit political correctness and expectations.
+xfactor541 So you'd be cool if one of your enemies walked up to your one of your female loved ones in the grocery store and started to describe her as a promiscuous woman worthy of being shot?
lifestraight That situation just wouldn't happen. And if it did, I truly would not give a shit & nor would any girl that I mess with. I was clearly talking about being offended in the context of somebody just saying certain words (NOT DIRECTED AT ME) as that girl & interviewer were implying. As I said, intention & context are everything. Getting angry or offended as if you are some kind of moral/righteous God just over the simple fact somebody says "nigga" or "bitch" in a song is INSANE. But even if it did have malicious intentions - ITS JUSTS WORDS. Get over your ego! There is literally nothing you can say to me that will offend me because even if you are trying to I STILL DON'T CARE.
+xfactor541 Noooo, you said " Are you really that weak-minded that all it takes is an amalgamation of letters to set you off? There should be NOTHING anybody can say that negatively impacts your mood. " If that's the case you shouldn't be offended if someone calls your mom, girlfriend, or sister a bitch. Or tells you that you are lousy at something you are passionate about. You contradicted yourself heavy. You are trying to say words are just an amalgamation of letters and there should be NOTHING anyone can say to negatively impact your mood, but then you admit that intention and context matters. So if those things matter then there is some weight to the word.
+xfactor541 I totally agree with you and I get your point. Good job
Exactly. This makes no sense. The same damn arguments from since NWA came out. They need to find something new to complain about because this shit is old.
You know you have a serious A$AP Rocky issue when you actually genuinely want to spend your time watching him sit and speak for an hour and 15 minutes
But the topic he's speaking about is actually appealing and he's well spoken
i'm guilty lmaooo
So much you, who claim the "intellectual union" is tainted with Rocky's presence, have to learn. To define your claims in one word: Superficial.
You represent people who immaturely and superficially claim "intellect" as a very narrow, unrepresentative set of traits. Do not forget what intellect is; Rocky shows sophisticated understanding of emotion, art, music, and worship.
All that he has achieved is deserved; the sacrifices made (which you can not see) and the wisdom gained from his rise in the Arts yield his success. This, and more, is what qualifies his invitation to the Union.
jib14k Thanks bro, glad that people are seeing the perspective and able to enjoy without this unneccessary intellectual snobbery. Hope you enjoyed the interview, throw me any criticism etc and let me know what could have been done better or what you might have like to have seen would love to hear your thoughts
100 points to this guy! So true, just cause he dont fit your image of intelligent!
Well put fam
jib14k Thank Youu
jib14k you're completely right, that the idea that some bullshit 'intellectual union' is tainted by Rocky is ridiculous and snobbish. But, that doesn't change the fact that Rocky's answers reveal him to be devoid of anything interesting to say. He's very smooth, but entirely reactionary and empty, at least in the face he's portraying (which I don't think is his true self, it's the self he has to market to be popular and unthreatening).
The fact Rocky can keep calm and interactive with a crowd like this shows he knows what he is doing.
From the minute Asap sat down he had the audience in the palm of his hands and that takes personality, charisma and alot of confidence especially not being in his own comfort zone at oxford. His also very witty.Such a skilled orator i am so impressed.

Academic intelligence is not representative of intelligence in general, in any way shape or form.
+Llama Yes it is, it's an extremely close correlation. What a fucking stupid thing to say. Anyone who says something like that obviously could not get into any good university or make something for themselves.
+Daniel lol, someone is spending the rest of their life as a slave to their uni debt.
Daniel Its not a close correlation. Most people who go to uni end up doing irrelevant shit. Most people who are intelligent save £30k and go straight for the dreams they know they can achieve. You seem bitter.
+Llama What about if in order to achieve your dreams you require a uni degree?
I Isaiah That's perfectly fine, if somebodies dream is to be a doctor then they need medical training. However the inquisitive nature required to be one of the best doctors cannot be taught.
Watching this in 2021 really makes me think that some of the topics that are being brought up are more relevant than ever. Plus getting to hear some of ASAP Rocky's take on things really makes me think that he is a very self aware person.

these oxford people ask awkward questions like: ''you did so and so, and then you said so and so about that but this and that blah blah.... could you please elaborate?'' like bitch what you want him to say, you just said everything there is to it. Don't stand up just to let people know you're aware of such and such
i think that's just putting a context to a question like everyone has a different background and all, and right about that some are broad questions, that don't evoke the same stuff from one person to another so that's just to make sure we are talking about the same thing

Tbh he made a false equivalence and he knows it. He doesn’t refer to men as sex objects and compartmentalise them like women. If it really were the same then men would be *equally* portrayed as fuck objects in rap culture.. but that is not the case.
@@opiatecords bruh how do you expect him to rap about men in a sexual way if he's straight
@@Radu_Bugai for real 🤣
