- Porter Wagoner sings 'Green, Green Grass of Home' at the Porter Wagoner Show in 1972. This has been a #4 country hit for Porter in 1965. Songwriter was Claude 'Curly' Putman Jr.
Lyric:
The old hometown looks the same as I step down from the train
And there to meet me is my mama and papa
And down the road I look and there runs Mary hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green green grass of home
Yes they'll all come to meet me arms areached smiling sweetly
It's so good to touch the green green grass of home
The old house is still standing though the paint is cracked and dry
And there's that old oak tree that I used to play on
Down the lane I walk with my sweet Mary hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green green grass of home
Then I awake and look around me at these four grey walls that surround me
And I realize that I was only dreaming
For there's a guard and there's that sad old padre arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak
And again I'll touch the green green grass of home
They'll all come to see me in the shade of that old oak tree
As they lay me neath the green green grass of home
Thank God for UA-cam. We can still hear real country music.
I lost my sweet Mary to cancer January 16th 2021... I can't wait to walk with my sweet Mary once again!!
Oh so very sorry for your loss! God bless you.
You have my deepest condolences. ✝️✝️✝️🙏🙏🙏☮️☮️☮️🌼🌼🌼💔💔💔
I’m Mexican American, when I first heard this song back as a child I had no clue what was being said. As I grew up I learned English but lost track of this gem. Later as an adult I became a professional DJ and had this song requested by a client. It was a dream come true to finally hear and understand this classic song and the name of it. Still makes me teary eyed but now I understand why.
I wish there were more Tejano/Mexican American country artists like Johnny Rodriguez, Freddy Fender and Rick Trevino. That is a country genre I like but not that many artists sing it
@@chrisroberts4017 do you know any artists of this genre?
Best version of this song by any singer.
You know you're getting old, when all the good country artists are gone.
Porter, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, etc.
Thank God, we have their recordings.
My Moms favorite song by Porter Wagoner I lost my Mother 5 years ago. I miss her so much
I love Porter's music. He was so unique!!
Tears streaming down my face listening to the wonderful song and remembering how my Daddy loved it. How I would sit with him and listen to it over and over.
Me too. I miss him so very much. He was from East Texas.
Same here!!
Kentucky
Porter Wagoner is and always will be one of country music`s Greats
This is REAL country music by one of country's greats!
yes ! and yes !
Really good song I like both old and new country music I grew up on country music
True.. I am from India... What a music..
Yes it is. I love all music. I’m really a rock n roller but my mama played th ear greats for me
Back when country music ment something we have slipped away from our roots
It was around late March 1968. I was laying in my bunk and this song came on the radio and as I listened I was overwhelmed with the feeling I would never see home again alive. It was my second month in Nam and as a young inexperienced platoon leader the pressure and fear I would let people down was even greater than my fear of death.I broke down and silently cried in the night and let it all go. Things got better after that, I resigned to my fate and determined I would do what had to be done and concentrate on my duties and responsibilities instead of my fears. It's been over 47 years since I first heard that song but it still brings back strong memories of crying in the dark and feeling so overwhelmed...
Sometimes it's like Johnnie Ray said and you'll feel better if you cry. Congrats on your accomplishments good sirs :D
Jim F thank you for your service
Yeah, the service that involves being in countries you have no reason to be in to fight a war for oil that old rich men started decades ago in the middle east. Thanks so much for keeping american luxuries in check at the price of your lives.
Go away troll. You are what is wrong with this country.
petiteme1960 Fuck you peasant I serve this country. I'm just not delusional enough to think dying for the illusion of fighting communism or fighting for oil in the desert hell holes is a cause I can rightfully stand by. I'm not blinded by patriotism. Think for yourself.
We cut our baby boys in a country that pretends to be about freedoms and liberties. How blinded American can be will be the downfall of the nation.
I watched his show every weekend with my mama when I not yet in Kindergarten. This song is one of my favorites of his.
i'm 16 years old, and i remember me and my dad listening to this on the way to hockey, and road trips, best times of my life, miss you dad
3 chords and the truth. All in first position. GREAT
This was my dads favorite song We say goodbye to him tomorrow as he goes to be with mom in heaven .RIp dad I miss you so much.
This was also my Dad's favorite song. He passed in 2011. I play it every year on his birthday.
@@andrewdouris6035 Its a great song. I'm sorry for your loss. Thanks for your comment. Its my dads bday today
That was 49 years ago. Wish I could go back to those years. Porter is one of the greatest men who ever lived. Good singer, entertainer and a wonderful man and person. I wish he was still here with us and still singing those beautiful heart-felt songs. This one in particular will cut your heart out, it is so sad. But love it all the same. That is why his songs are so loved.
One of the best Songs ever...Life passes us so quick.
This is mine and my grandfather's song I'm 14 and he is 59 and we are just so similar
Porter was one of the true gentlemen of country music. He had one of the best group of musicians to back him and Buck Trent should be in every instrumental hall of fame for his work on guitar and banjo behind Porter. Max McGehee was a tremendous fiddler and the steel player was one of the best also. Porter gave Dolly her big break and also Norma Jean.
My mom was also a Missourian (Joplin/Neosho area!) and I grew up all my life listening to Porter! Still love his voice.
Ozark Nixa area always loved Porter Wagoner Jan Howard Wynn Stewart and the many other great Missouri legends
I love this song
It's a shame that this would be considered too corny for today's listeners. Because this is like a hymn, a message of compassion and sorrow, and still so beautiful. We've lost something.
I'm 31 i love it.
Ebenezar I'm 24 and I like this song... people need to explain the meaning of the song to us
My grandfather loved porter wagoner. Since he now passed I listen to him.
@Mark Jackson you don't understand the meaning of this song?Lol
Ebenezar i am 15 and love it
One of the best memories of my life is singing my daddy's songs. He's a formidable man and all our kids will love him to pieces
Ah, a song from the days when I liked country music.
a Giant of Country Music in every way, R.I.P.
Wow, what the hell happened to country music? This is the real deal. Lyrics that actually tell a story, great guitar, fiddle playing and they're all dressed in style. Country artists had a little more class back then compared to this freak show they call country today.
Spot on! I grew up with this kind of country and the “stars” of country music were not interested in the LA lifestyle and the women were modest. Now we’ve got “Jelly Roll.” I win never consider him a country artist and I will not listen to any of the ones who mingle with Hollywood. That’s not country!
Country music has become country rock pretty much like what Credence was to rock and roll. Now there is nothing wrong with country rock in my opinion but I think we have forgotten about traditional country music. Country music needs to get back to the mother church which is the Rhineman auditorium home of WSM Grand Ole opry and get back to the more traditional artists and by the way Beyonce is not country music.!!!!!! The women of country music like Patsy a d Loretta would kick her rear off the stage
@@Tinaritaworse yet Beyonce did a country album and screwed up.dollys Jolene
I think Garth and Brooks and Dunn are good they are traditional country artists but I like the nudie suits on Porter and Hank St too
Listening to Porter always makes me miss my Daddy. He loved him and Dolly.
One of my all time favorites from my childhood back in West Texas.
Noone sang this song like my Grandpa! I love and miss you Grandpa!
I'm sorry for your loss.
best singer in the world
How old
Maximum respect to you and your grandfather and rest of family.
I'm 29 years old. My grandfather raised me on old country, and this is one of those songs I still love and appreciate to this day. 💕
you had a great grandfather
Same age I always was into old country can't place where I go it fro tho maybe my step grandpa
@@earlslot8320
YES... But he was dead. I didn't get to meet him. Nor my Great Gramma.
Nothing like old country1
@@gipsie712 So true!
porter my 2 year old loves you, this song is what he asks for everytime i open youtube he can even sing along to parts but he's adorable running around the house saying gween gween grass o -- home
Mercy Sakes!, they don't make it this good anymore - I loved Porters style, always lookin' good for the camera. Todays country music sucks because non of these people ever starved before.
Still listening to this man for Wagner October 21st 2019 boy it sure sounds good he talked about the Green Green Grass of Home traditional country music is this that I listen to it every day God bless Porter thank you for all the good music that you played and still listening today
JoJo makes me discover really awesome music.
Back when country music meant quality entertainment 👌
loved this song growing up ,singers today just cant deliver an emotional story anymore like porter and orthers did in days gone by ,they knew how top make hits
I will always remember all these songs cause I grew up in the green green of the blue grees and on the weekend and in Indiana on week days I had a little bit of two different lifes I always felt i loved it it meant more to me then anything but know body knew me i didnt talk to anyone but i learnt a lot from my older ones

I was raised up listening to this music and I love it
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST COUNTRY SONGS EVER WRITTEN & SANG BY MANY GREAT ARTIST`s
CountryBoy Williams I agree!!!!
This was the first round dance I learnt from my grandma and only danced it with her until she passed
He really was one of the greats.
this song hits me in the heart everytime I here it....in many ways I can relate....
This song was played at my Great Grandpa’s funeral who I never met
Some are best live and some are best in the studio.
Porter Wagoner excelled in this format with his weekly show. A little bit of both.
That look in his eye as he speaks the narrative. There's no questioning his genuineness with his spontaneity. The man is just a darned good old boy.
So smooth, yet with such power. Wow!
If your a Vietnam vet coming back to listen to this I love ya mate thank you and trust me man it will get better bro I promise man ✊ #LOOKOUTFORAMATE
with you tube country music still lives ,sing it porter it dont get much better then this
PORTER WAGONER WAS THE BEST MISS HIM EVERY DAY
He is a legend......Hello Penny how is the weather over there?
My all-time favorite song ❤❤❤
Hello how are you? So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song
The breakdown at the end can REALLY get to you the first time you hear this song and don't know what's going to happen. It starts off nice and simple about just enjoying the countryside of your youth when...WHAM! Really pretty and heavy stuff.
so sad and yet beautiful
Hello Michele
Wow. I'm 56 today. I remember watching this particular show with my dad. This song and the way Porter Wagoner performed it is the best version of this song. Nobody sells this song like him. I thought a lot about this song walking home from school one day. My Dad is gone now but he'd love this, like I do. Thank you
I think Elvis did a better job but I still like Porter’s version
That folks is what you call country music.
❤ Beautiful ❤️❤️
I grew up hearing the country music that my parents always played. I always preferred rock myself back then. Only now, can I fully appreciate classic country. This is a great song by an all-time legend. I only wish that I had gone to see him while he was still alive.
So do I Ms. Sherri. I'm crying now. It reminds me so much of my sweet grandparents in Springville, Tenn who lived in an "old homeplace." Country music isn't the same. Rest in heavenly peace, Porter.
THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I used to love the Porter Wagoner Show... Lawrence Welk too. It was clean and pure without the special effects or garbage they have on tv now.
ty sir good old song
Justin Gammon good song
Justin Gammon yes i did
The thing that is missing today is we don't get to know the personalities or get to know the singers. More attention , like you said, is paid to stage effects or the camera man swoops down and around so we can't even see the people very much. Seems like everything we ever used to enjoy has been ruined . But at least we can enjoy this and our memories.
God Blessed us With this song, Talent, Porter Wagner, and Curly Putman
God Blessed us With This Great Talent! Porter Wagoner!
I remember playing one side flip it over and play the other side on an old record player oh Porter was a good singer he made a lot of good songs but those days and I kind of music is a long gone and never will be back just old memories
This song makes me think of my grandparents, seemed like such a great time for country music and just music overall!
you gotta love Porters flashy suits
Elvis Presley’s version is by far my favorite, but Porter did a good job too
what a great song...............never gets old...........thjanks..david c.

I miss my mom and dad rip this was one of thier favorits .
Sorry
For 55 years we have been singing (and listening to ) this song and it has not faded a bit.
My dad use to watch his show on sat night he's gone now sure does bring back great memories
Wow I can't help I'm cryin' over this song.
I have heard many versions of this song by different artist, In my opinion this is by far the best.. And one of my favorite
Many years ago I first heard this song, and it was Porter who sang it. I really liked it, but never heard it that often until suddenly numerous artists sang and recorded it as well. While there are many different recordings, I still think Porter Wagoner sang it the best.
I'm always drawn back to this song. This song is the center of my existence...
Never noticed before but Green Green Grass of Home has a gospel sound to it.
I was in Germany in 1965 in the Army and we played this every time we were at a bar!!!!
Great memories
Porter was an awesome entertainer! Loved his music. Nice man.Left us much too soon.
God Blessed us with Porter Wagoner's Talent!
God doesn’t exist
Porter was a born entertainer, he does a tribute to his pet dog that is great as well.
I heard my dad sing these songs loved them.

this is one of my fave music. PORT WAGONER is EPIC!!!
Loved setting in the old Ryman downtown Nashville listening to these "real Country singers" Stars back in the 50s.
I remember Porter singing this song 23 April 2005, after I got to clog on the Grand Ole Opry in my Lightup shoes. I was so honored to get to meet him. Best Wishes LittleCountryDJ
