The son realized when he found the ring, his dad Walter Browning and Mary Ellen were having an affair! Location, I believe since both Wagner and Ferguson (the song writer) are from Missouri bordering Carroll County Arkansas.....I'm only speculating and could be wrong, but this is my best guess.

According to the writer, Bob Ferguson, it was Carroll County, MS. He was driving from Nashville TN to Philadelphia MS, and when he went through Carroll County TN, he got the idea for the title, and when he saw the sign for Carroll County MS, the song was complete.

But it seems strange that the most famous person to come out of that low-population county was longtime congressman, two-time Tennessee Gov. Gordon Browning (1937-39, 1949-53). I'm surprised he didn't sue.

So many country artists today are country-rock artist and so many of them are copyingeach other.
