    Solo female urban stealth camping.. safety tips for wild camping.. van life UK
    So yet again I have gone off on my travels solo, well, not really travels as the park up i had picked out was far too busy. No problem though as (with a bit of help from a friend) I have a crack at some urban stealth camping and see if I can get away with parking up and spending the night at a supermarket car park!!
    It's not the epic travels around Europe that we are hoping for, and no, we are no closer to taking our self converted campervan over to the continent but with AJ our dog still very much in recovery and travel restrictions still very much in play it's looking to be a very busy year for campervanning and wild camping here in the UK. So, I thought it's about time to get some practice in parking our tiny home on wheels in some proper urban stealth locations, even thogh she's not really built for it! At this rate Emily's solo van may just be a car for some proper stealth car camping!! 'Cos who knew how much fun stealth camping at a supermarket, and wild camping at a morrisons could be so much fun!!
    Follow us on our journey as we attempt to create a proper UA-cam travel series as we travel across Europe during this global pandemic.

    Oh! so busy being inappropriate that forgot to say, I find it's a good idea to leave a morrisons bag on the front seat (or Tesco ect) so if mr hi viz looks in at least he will know your a customer x😉

    Just watched your vlog, another good tip is when your own your own, always get in and out of the passenger door, then anyone watching thinks you are the passenger and presume there is 2 of you. Also leave a dog lead on the top of the dashboard in view x

      Had a thought about that, if you have internet in your van put a camera in that allows 2 way audio and you can play music, talk or even shout if it alerts you.

    Good advice! Something I do is always back in to a parking spot (if there is a wall or fence, etc.) so I can easily forward quickly if need be. Also, I have a miniature bullhorn with siren. Easy to push button if you hear worrisome noise outside the van. Scares the shit out of anyone standing near your van and guaranteed they will sprint off.

    When I was in the army, while on field duty, there were times we heated our MREs (meal, ready to eat) with the engines of our jeep or truck. It was the mid 80s, so no nifty built in heating element in the packaging. So, when Lou put the spuds on the engine it made total sense. 😁

    With regard to food with no washing up we take freeze dried dehydrated meals from "Summit to Eat" when we go wild camping in the mountains etc. They are Nutritious and tasty and you simply add hot water to rehydrate in the bag itself. The only thing we are left to wash up is the spork we ate it with. They can't be a little on the expensive side but you do get deals fairly regularly on the website itself and buy one get one half price at Blacks, Millets and Go outdoors etc.

    Some good safety tips, Lou. We use a thick, grey material as a cab divider. It's shaped to the van and uses press studs to keep it taut. From the outside it looks like an empty cab with a bulkhead.
    There's one downside to it looking an empty van. A bloke I know went the full stealth; no windows (apart from the cab, of course), just two large Heki rooflights. One night, some lowlifes broke in to the van whilst he and his partner were sleeping inside. He said that he didn't know who was most surprised, them or the crooks.

    • @campervibe
      @campervibe  2 роки тому

      Now that is stealth, I like your idea about the divider but yeah can make it look empty

    Buy some spray oil. Spray you jacket potatoes and grind some salt and black pepper on them before you wrap them in foil.

    I have wild camped in cities while on holiday in both the motorhome and campervan for a number of years. I find the best way to blend into the background is to be amongst other cars or vans. Being the only vehicle in a big car park really sticks out. Fine - it is not going to be the end of the world - but you definitely don't blend in. I normally find a quieter residential street, where one side is either a park, or some big houses divided into flats, with big trees upfront and their own parking on the grounds. This way the on street parking is not in such high demand. Park amongst the other cars, by some big trees or hedges - so that houses next to you don't overlook you, and you are not in their face - and you effectively disappear into the urban landscape. It has worked brilliantly again and again for me. In Oxford I parked once right by the university buildings - there was free overnight parking, and there were a few cars left around overnight - so, again, me being there looked like just another vehicle parked in the street. With a bit of commons sense, it just works and you get a good night sleep - and nobody is bothered by you being there.

  • @sebxj25vm
    @sebxj25vm 3 роки тому +2

    Also, timing can really help. If you are going to stop overnight in a residential area, probably not a good idea to arrive early in the afternoon, and hang around for no good reason and make local residents concerned. Best to spend the day elsewhere in the area, and move into the overnight spot late - after 10pm if possible. By then everyone is tucked in bed or watching TV, and, if you keep any noise down while parking and getting ready to go to bed, nobody will even know you were there overnight. In most residential areas, leaving early doesn't seem to be as important - most people will be in a hurry to leave for work or take kids to school in the morning - they won't have time to count vehicles in their road or pay much attention. However, if you are by some business or institution, leaving early and getting out of the way could be a good idea.

    Three additional urban sites I’ve used many times….lots at a hospital for the emergency room (I use if there’s plenty of spaces open), larger hotels w big lots especially when they are next to other parks ups for adjacent businesses…go right in between the two…no one can tell if you’re in one or the other, mid range larger apt buildings…there are always lots of visitors parked there…just don’t use the dedicated numbered spots.

Seriously great video for urban newbies and solo women to get into urban parkups, they do take some getting used to 100% but as a four year urban veteran I've never had any problems and supermarkets are a great way to start. Pre-grated cheese tastes like plastic because it's covered in cellulose for anti-caking and to absorb moisture... get a block and grate it and it's finer, moister, fresher and still has all the flavour for better value...

    I think the riskiest thing is putting a camera down on the car park and walking back to your van you must worry about a car going over at the top of it. Good blog I don't park in Beauty Spot anymore I drive into the nearest village or town and park with other vehicles usually get a goodnight and you don't offend anybody. 💕

    I reckon you need to add a couple of things to your van toolkit, a decent set of bolt cutters and some anpr proof duct tape, trust me it works a treat! Also, don't forget that if you are paying at self checkouts you can use as many coins as you want, just lift up the plastic around the slot for easier access. If the avalanche chute closes don't worry it'll open again when more of your coins have filtered through. You can also pay in several pounds worth of coins then press cancel and it'll give you higher value coins back instead of all your pennies again....great if you need change for parking.
    Great video by the way 👍🏻

    I did a Walmart parkup once years ago and it was OK (but I was drunk so....)
    I'm only worried that there's going to be some backlash from parking lots from this. But if so, they're missing a trick. Even say things get ugly with campervans coming out the yingyang. They could charge a flat rate of £2 from 10p to 6a (or shop hours, whatever), it'd be making money from nothing, really.

Don't tell the keyboard warriors but you can even put it on whilst driving (just secure it down) and when you get to your destination a great meal is already cooked. Simply super for potatoes, sweet potatoes, any meat, veggies etc. I chuck it all in there a s done. Pics of some of my meals done in that on my insta @rv nomading. Loads of van lifers use remoska.

    well i wouldn`t dead lock the back two doors get a local fabrication shop to make a pair of brackets to put on each door and a piece of bar to lay across them and should the event ever arise pull the bar off the two hooks shove both doors open and your out stops any one getting in without a problem common practice for van fitters keeping the tools over night failing that a electric fence unit mains obviously not forgetting the wire and isolators connected to the battery mains inverter on its highest setting naturally after all you want to see the scummy little runt before the local plod take them away and emily might want to kick them aswell lol

I blend in with the Urban jungle easily. The secret is pick a place away from houses, with trees and hedges for cover,there is always somewhere around business parks .I always scope park ups before on google earth in advance to see what it’s like . Recommend business parks for urban parking, very quiet after work hours and weekend and usually no parking restrictions. But usually near a large park in a city there will be parking surrounding it that is free and semi urban and is far better scenery than a supermarket car park!=)

    Black thick cab curtain was allways my choice in the summer months & only in the winter with the foil screens for heat retension, Whilst the dead locks maybe a good idea for single females they pose a fire risk escape or other problems that might come up so i never had them , my motto was if the buggers want to get in they will just smash the glass so dead locks in my mind were never considered and were an overpriced item.

    • @campervibe
      @campervibe  3 роки тому

      It doesn't matter how many security measures you have, if they want to get in they will, that being said prevention is our aim so the harder it is the less likely they are to try. We got the dead locks so at least they'd have to smash a window to steal the van, then they take the risk of getting noticed and not being able to get out quickly if stopped, and, like I said we fit out the windows if there's a fire.
      Many thanks for watching, and for your thoughts on the curtain 😁😁👍

    Great video Lou, love the cookbook, and Baked pots on the engine, great idea. now seriously, as a camper to cut down on washing up, you can do boiled eggs in the kettle, i have only done hard boiled for egg mayo, so you would have to play with timings for soft boiled, put in kettle, boil and leave for half hour or more. and tins of beans/tomato can be heated this way,
    boil kettle, and boil every 5 mins and half hour later its piping hot, just be careful opening. something for you to try out.

Not the CO2 type but the one that goes off if someone tries to lead knockout gas types into the caravan. If parking just overnight I always left the caravan hooked up to the car and secured the connection with a lock. The rest was 4-legged security
