I actually work as a designer in the gaming industry! I've worked in the animation industry and I'd say working in design is more stable when it comes to benefits and income. It is very corporate so there is a lot of down time and you may not be illustrating things you actually enjoy creating. If anyone has questions feel free to ask!
do you have any thoughts on how ai will affect your industry? I really want to work in the gaming industry but im still a beginner and im scared that there wont be jobs by the time im ready
My mom told me that if I want to have a career out of art, I should draw impersonal things and give the people what they want apart from drawing in my comfort zone.
My family was quite similar to that, most thought I should be a boardwalk artist. They thought that although unstable and not entirely well paying, that was the only way I was gonna make a single cent with my art.
Lol yep! I even vlogged a lot about my experience on it a lot of last year's videos, but couldn't show much of what i was doing. But glad it's out now and that you enjoyed!
I mainly want to be a character designer. I love drawing people, but I like to sketch more than fully render. Storyboarding sounds better, but I still want to design. Storybook illustration sounds nice as well if I want to have a more entry level thing while having a job or when I graduate.
This was such a great and informative video. I've been debating for a while now just what direction I want to go with my art career and I think deep down I've always known but getting confirmation that I don't have to be in animation to have a professional career as an artist is very reassuring. Especially since I'm starting at 25
Damn girl. Didn't you know you helped create Oni. I just finished the show last night - it made me shed a few tears. Great work :) I love stories with deeper meaning. It also made me more interested in Japanese folklore.
There’s also a book called careers in art by Blythe Camenson that goes through and gives description on careers in art. They have professional artist statement and what they did to get into the field. It has fine arts, graphic art, art education, arts sales and many more. It tell you about colleges and universities training and more highly recommended.
I loved Oni so much, it was so uplifting and had so many cute character moments! As someone aspiring to have a career in art, it is so inspirational watching how your career is developing. Thank you for making these videos :)
I'd like to add that In publishing you can also do Book cover as an illustrator and/or graphic designer which is not as stable either but there are some cool gigs for it. For storyboarding consider film industry too because they also work with them. For the animation industry stuff, it also applies to games industry, and for games industry you also have UI artist which is has a lot of offer imo.

I would love to see a video discussing your experience/knowledge with finding/working with an agent and what that looks like! (Also standard practices to expect or red flags to be aware of). ❤
Ah so some more options that relate to these but in a slightly different field! Game development! I currently freelance for a small indie studio as a 2D artist and animator, and honestly its a fascinating field which carries a lot of the skillsets of working in animation for film or shows, but also with a technical twist. Theres concept art, character design, environment design, storyboard for cinematics, 2D or 3D modeling and animation, UI and UX design, VFX and special effects animators. The industry is definitely interesting, as you can work with an AAA studio (Bungie, or Playstation etc) if you really want to specialize in a skillset for a larger team, or work with indie studios where you can usually wear multiple hats if that interests you. I think the biggest difference between working in games versus other entertainment might be the prevalence of technical limitations and making sure to always serve the player experience- the art is heavily reliant on not just story but also mechanics, and how can the art tell a story, or communicate the level design, help the player, etc. Very fun puzzle in my experience!

I worked in UX design for several years working mostly on a website and app. It paid well but I was very unfulfilled. I considered animation as one path. I want to be in the world of storytelling and emotions. Thanks for making this!
@@charlottequinnie I always wanted to be in a more creative career but didn’t believe in myself. I felt very insecure as an artist during my early 20s. Design comes pretty easy to me so I took that route after college. I’m glad I did because it helped me make a decision and become financial stable and independent. Now I’m a little older, in my late 20s with more working experience I have more confidence to pursue something else more in alignment with what I want, which is to work in an entertainment or close to it. I used to attach myself to my work more but after working for several years you get a lot of critique and rejection so I don’t take anything personally anymore.
@@Shalini.__it's funny. I'm studying fine art, still love it, but thinking about getting a UX dedigner job later because they pay better. What do you need for UX designer job?
I need some advice. I am applying for illustration and character and concept art jobs, but there isn’t many role’s available in London uk. Or if there are available roles it’s often the same role being put out there that I applied to months before. Also I don’t get any feedback when I get rejected and it seems those jobs aren’t being filled. It gets confusing on what to do because I don’t see any roles that are constantly there. I feel like there is a different route to how people get into the industry other than applying, but I don’t know anyone who’s a artist. Anyway your storyboards for ONI are really good.
Hmm this is smth a lot of entry level artist struggle with, and I think a big big factor is that most of the time, concept art and character design is handled by seniors or experienced artists in a company. Characters are usually, literally, the face of a story, so someone with experience is given those tasks to make sure it goes well. Most of the time, entry level or new concept artists might be doing more work with environment or prop design, for both animation or for video games. I also suggest finding a way to network online! Discord is a great place to find communities of like-minded people and make friends (example: Work with Indies server if you are interested in working on games or just want advice/your portfolio reviewed). I can’t really say much else without seeing your work itself but just some things to consider maybe!
If they are rejecting you without ever giving any feedback at this stage, that 90% means either they are looking for different artstyle than yours OR they are looking for someone with a higher skillset. It also might be that you dont have enough specific artworks in your portfolio (concepts for concept art lets say), but that would usually mean theyre gonna contact you asking for a test task. +1 to what @Sofimei_jmj said - the products of those job you listed are mostly "face of the project" and the company needs the best people for it. It doesnt mean you are not good, i would say... just unexpirienced. Try looking around for "2D artist" possition. They are usually working with ready base designs and do repetetive tasks that senior artists dont have the time to do, but this way youll gain the exp needed for higher positions :)
Love these video's you do, so much great and 'to-the-point' info ! Too bad about the background music, it makes it a little hard to follow what you're saying, maybe it's just me :0
Thank you for this video. ❤ I may have to rewatch for so notes Meanwhile I do my personal homework on research, prep cover letter + resume, and building a portfolio
Thank you for this video!! What I’m curious about is if moving out to california really a must to have a career in animation? Or do you think remote work increasing in the future? I’m based in NYC and has been tough finding opportunities here. 😓😅
Storytelling is in everything good imo, the best branding and advertising tells a story, the best backgrounds are a character in themselves that tell a story or many stories.
Degree doesnt matter AT ALL. The only thing important is skillset and expirience. They would rather hire an artist that have decent portfolio without school, than have to deal with someone with art college but not so great artworks.
Thank you for this insightful video. The creative industry is not as diversified as it should be however these are a great few careers with stability in income.
I finished Oni this morning and I appreciated all the political commentary and environmental messages and diversity. 45 minutes per episode was a cool choice too cause it allowed the story to breathe. Thank you for your work on it.
this was really helpful!! I wanted to be a character designer but after hearing about storyboarding and doing more research i think thats where I want to go
Typically unless you are Japanese you don't qualify your comic or graphic novel to be a "manga". Manga is by definition I believe is: a Japanese rapidly produced graphic novel. While it's confusing at first I hope this helps. You can create a graphic novel, or a light novel in the style of Manga but unless you do a lot of research and use a legitimate Japanese pen name and study the language it's very hard to trick the masses enough to get classified as a Manga artist.
Im from Michigan, a place where animation isn't very.. popular. Most artist here end up working as designers for the big three 😅 But I REALLY want to be a storyboard artist. Here's hoping I get accepted to any animati school

I am currently in the class 11th Humanities student and till 10th i wanted pursue my career into a law field, still want to but also at the same time i also want my talent to be showcased to the world because i am pretty good at dancing, painting (animation to be exact) but also kinda scared to pursue my career into art field because nowadays it's just more great to be in a field of a particular subject. Well, if i can't pursue my career into law than i am considering to be in a art field. Well, ik it's kinda "early" for some people to look out at the jobs even before studing it..😅 idk if i am stating it correctly
I was working a FT job unrelated to art but now have been given an opportunity to go into the career I always wanted which is art and specifically animation/storyboarding. The only problem is I have no idea how to get started! How does someone who's spent the majority of their professional career in an un art related field get started? Perhaps it's a bit like someone straight out of art school trying to get their first gig? But again how does one do that?
I really wanna know majors that have to do with art because my mom thinks architecture will be taken by AI and too many ppl are doing it do I’m trying to look into majors that have to do with art?
I'm almost 24 and have doodled and scribbled but, assuming I'm not very good at all, is it even possible to pursue a career in something like storyboarding or animation? Or am I too late? Do I need a degree?
Its never to late to become an artist. Take tutorials and practice more seriously every moment you get. I find watching art videos of other people drawing help me out a lot. Some ppl improve extremely fast, months even. You can do it!
Wow congrats on the project Netflix is definitely a good movie platform yo yu worked hard I'm def going to let my daughter's watch wit me I wanna be were you at godbless you

I Love ONI, at first I think it was stop motion but then I realize... Noup it's CG and wow. Also I Love the part when u say there's no shame in switch for financial difficulties. ❤️❤️
I worked in UX design for several years working mostly on a website and app. It paid well but I was very unfulfilled. I considered animation as one path. I want to be in the world of storytelling and emotions. Thanks for making this!
why was it unfulfilling?

I always wanted to be in a more creative career but didn’t believe in myself.
I really love oni what an amazing show . you guys did an amazing job
Thank you for this!! The past few videos were super helpful in helping me figure things out a bit more >
I just watched the series you worked on and really enjoyed it.😊 You and your team did a good job
Thank you for your video! So many new career paths I had no idea.
@@XXXXXX-tn6pl Thanks for the advice, I will take it and keep on trying.
@@sofimei_jmj4567 Thanks for the advice. I have not tried discord but should find other artists to befriend.
no wayyy you worked on oni 😮. i loved that series it was so cute naridon is beautiful
Okay...so I'm new to this channel. I swear you intro with, "Hello B*tches". Surely I'm wrong, but I can't seem to interpret it another way lol.
Yeah that’s what I thought too lol
Super helpful video, thanks!😊
Love these video's you do, so much great and 'to-the-point' info ! Too bad about the background music, it makes it a little hard to follow what you're saying, maybe it's just me :0
Thank you so much! That helped so much
Thanks for the tips and congratulations for your stunning work :)
Thanks for the video it will help alot🤗🤗
Thank you for this video. ❤ I may have to rewatch for so notes Meanwhile I do my personal homework on research, prep cover letter + resume, and building a portfolio
Thank you for sharing this.
I loved Onari 🎉 my girls love it ❤ I hope there are more episodes coming, which bring the characters back to the forest. So sweet!
Thank you for this video!! What I’m curious about is if moving out to california really a must to have a career in animation? Or do you think remote work increasing in the future? I’m based in NYC and has been tough finding opportunities here. 😓😅
This is a very very informative video
Storytelling is in everything good imo, the best branding and advertising tells a story, the best backgrounds are a character in themselves that tell a story or many stories.
Is a degree in art mandatory for getting a job? Im self taught in art with degree in technology 😖
Any tip for CG modeling beginners? I have some knowledge in 3D and I want to get a job of it :D
Congrats!! Oni is well ragarded, still looking forward to seeing it in full!
Great overall so far!! Keep it up!
Hi mew I am going to take art course in grafical,or as a illustration, how to prepare a portfolio of it beforehand ple help me
this was really helpful!! I wanted to be a character designer but after hearing about storyboarding and doing more research i think thats where I want to go
Is making a Manga apart of the whole graphic novel thing? (Also is there a way to make a Manga in the states?)
@@kokoro9114 Thank you for the info this will really help!
Im from Michigan, a place where animation isn't very.. popular. Most artist here end up working as designers for the big three 😅
But I REALLY want to be a storyboard artist. Here's hoping I get accepted to any animati school
Which did you apply to? Good luck.
@@Peter32tjrksor Thanks :) Im applying to CSS, which is like the only known art college in the state lol. They have an animation program, but I'm not sure if it'a worth the money. So I'm also applying to Sheridan SVA and Calarts. However, SVA and Calarts are much too expensive for me. So here's hoping for Sheridan. Hbu?
I dropped out of college and never went to art school, i'll be 22 soon is it impossible for me to get a job in animation or illustration without a degree? will i have to just do freelance?
If you’re good enough they’ll take you.
Degree doesnt matter AT ALL. The only thing important is skillset and expirience. They would rather hire an artist that have decent portfolio without school, than have to deal with someone with art college but not so great artworks.
Im planning on going to art school next year
I want to ɓe a character designer, i love making designs and doing research for clothes, race and ect. I hopefully it goes well
This is helpful because I always knew I wanted to do art so character design might be for me
Hello, My name is anna and i just turned 14 I'm really good at art but the only problem is that I can't make anything by myself I'm really good at copying sketches and painting
Do you guys think i can still be an artist?
thank you for this info!! as someone who was self taught, i never knew what these jobs would be titled as (if that makes sense) lol do you have any recommendations on where to search for art jobs?
Suppose I came from the world of web comics specifically, What kind of adjustments would I need to make switching from Webcomics to Storyboarding for network television like Disney or Cartoon Network?
My goal is to become a character designer either freelance or at a studio. Does anyone know of any UA-camrs that realistically expand on that as a career option?
@crystalheart9108 Since this is from over a year ago, you might have found her already but Jackie Droujko is one. I want to become a character designer as well and I watch her channel for tips
I dunno if you’re gonna see this. I want to get into the animation industry. I am from Africa so opportunities aren’t as possible as in the USA or Europe. What do I do
You can practise everywhere as long as you have acces to PC and net connection. About work- you can work remotely, doesnt rly matter where you live. Good language skill and youre good to go.
I wanna make manga and anime in the future i just hope my dream come true
Thank you so much for this! I have a question, is there someting similar to colorist in the game or animation industry?
Playfully, congratulations, your Sales Incentive payment confirmation is officially through the magical processing chamber!
I do not have the skills either, but I'm fantasising lol
Im a 14 year old artist and writer and i want a job in the future to be something related to art, i've planned on maybe becoming a children story book! write a lesson story for children and add little images!!!
u have such pretty eyes... kept staring at em for 5 mins straighttttttt
I decided to start animating 2 weeks ago. ☺
I wanted to use your video for my kids but had to stop at the intro for them :( ---- Well, thanks so much for at least talking to the older ones.
i would love to work at a tattoo shop, i dont even need to be one of the tattoo artists lol that just seems like it would be really stressful putting something on a person that is permanent😝
I'm studying fine art but i would like to have remote job or freelancer. I still have no idea what kind of job/work which i can do with my background. I feel a little bit lost
Here's just the problem for me. Fear and lack of patience. But great video nontheless.
thank you so much!!!
Where can I major in, in college to get to work in the character designer in the future? Or get these certain type of jobs.
I really wanna know majors that have to do with art because my mom thinks architecture will be taken by AI and too many ppl are doing it do I’m trying to look into majors that have to do with art?
how would i get a job like illustration or colourisct when i am a student? or a big job anyway..
quick question If I do take illustration but want to work in storyboard artists, shoudl I take extra courses?
that intro had me flabbergast
Do you think one can be adesi, sculptor , a painter and animator at the same time?
I’m so confused 😢, have Lm to years to possibly go to university
How do I study these things, like for animation, design. Etc
Do I do small courses. or are universities and art schools worth it?
I'm almost 24 and have doodled and scribbled but, assuming I'm not very good at all, is it even possible to pursue a career in something like storyboarding or animation? Or am I too late? Do I need a degree?
Its never to late to become an artist. Take tutorials and practice more seriously every moment you get. I find watching art videos of other people drawing help me out a lot. Some ppl improve extremely fast, months even. You can do it!
did ou just call us bitchess at the start of the video?
Wow congrats on the project Netflix is definitely a good movie platform yo yu worked hard I'm def going to let my daughter's watch wit me I wanna be were you at godbless you
What about artists who wants to work in gaming designs and industries.
