Studios in California: Yeah your job is to paint the fur of the main character's concept. Studios in my country: Yeah on Monday you do character design, wednesay is for backgrounds and then you start animating and modelling until Sunda. Also, do you make good coffee?
California pisses me off. I'm from the US, but it feels like a completely different country. I have to admit I'm jealous of the opportunities people get by being born over there
I'm glad you included information on the 3D side of things. It seems like UA-cam pushes the aesthetics of 2D, so a lot of young artists don't realize how many jobs there are in 3D.
Animation industry is incredibly specialized, and the best tip of advice is to find where your personality matches in the pipeline and how your brain processes decisions, and target roles around there.
thank you for covering this!! people mention how long the production process is in animation and how there's a lot to do, but I've never seen anybody actually list out the job opportunities before! excited to learn something new ^^
this may be the single most helpful video on the animation industry ive ever watched. I feel like i have so much more clarity of purpose now thank you Michelle
duh, for some reason i never thought graphic design would be an animation job, but it does make sense when it comes to titles and credits. def come in handy to create marketing
THIS HELPED ME SOOO MUCH!! THank YOU! In highschool my teach didnt know a lot about it as she had other classes but taught us many things we needed to know, basic wise. For years I knew there were sooooo many roles and labels in the industry I didnt know. its not simple as it sounds to say " I wanna be an animator, working in the film industry", whi,e I knew none of the actual titles of roles to look up.. Knowing stuff like this allows someone to actually know where their goals are and give a clue on how they can lookup to get there.
Thank you so much for this video, I feel like a lot of young artists who are looking for jobs in the industry feel stuck trying to seek out very specific roles. It goes to show how many possibilities there really are!
This video came out at such a great time! My animation friends and I have to start choosing our majors for next year so this really helps us give an idea what positions will come out of them. Thanks Michelle❣
Honestly thank you for giving us info on what you know about the jobs in the animation industry but I couldn't help but acknowledge how beautiful you are
Thank you for making this! I want to make sure that I have the skills that can cross over to most of these so that I do not get stuck in a one track mind and disappoint myself when I graduate (2.5 years to go) and don't end up doing something I might have hyperfixated on. Been a subscriber for years, thank you so much.
Thx, I wish there was someone like you back when I was in high school, trying to figure out what career to go on. Long story short, I tried to choose between several different art careers, including animation. This video would have been nice to have.
@CGirl2004 Hi! I'm still unsure. I think I wanna get an art career a lil later in life. Can't afford art school or college, looking into coding/IT for now and improving my art work thru online classes.
This video was years ago, but here I am. Stories are what I'm best at, not drawing or voice acting or anything. But it's been my dream to make my own cartoon or animated series and I already have many ideas. I hope to make it all happen in the future
Thank you so much! I have a animated show I am making, and someone in my discord server isn’t comfortable with being a voice actor, so I am trying to find a job for them so they don’t feel left out!
thank you so much for making this!! i’ve known i wanted to be in the industry for a while but i wasn’t sure what all my options were. this gives me some more ideas!
Thank you. What I love about your channel is that you make videos that not a lot of other people do. This is very helpful when considering what I want to do in the future with animation.
It’s strange cause I thought the storyboard revisionist would be more important than the storyboard artist since they have to fix any mistakes. I would’ve thought that they would give that role to someone higher up. Thank you for this video, can’t stress enough how helpful it is!!! I started drawing seriously in 2021/2022 and I’m trying to work in animation as either a character, VisDev/BG artist or an animator (2D/3D).
We appreciate your videos so much, Michelle! Thank you so much for educating us about the animation industry and sharing your personal journey. It's all so very insightful and inspiring. ❤💗🙌 I hope the younger generations of artists will be able to discover your video because this is exactly what I wish I saw when I was first learning about this field.
thanks for this information, for me was so important because in 1 month i`m going to graduate as an animator engineer, and i feel so nervous for find a job
Thank you for your explanation! It helps alot to me since I'm going to take my on-the-job training next semester. I didn't know that animation is a broad subject to talk about but now, I understand and determined to pursue this career. Goodluck to me!
insanely insightful 🙌🏾 i’d love a video about the quote i always hear “it takes a year to make an episode” i’m curious on where the overlap starts. I hear about board partners and certain teams who do certain episodes. How many are made at once? What’s the actual pipeline flow like?? 👀 amazing vid always 👍🏽🖤
As a painter and a lover of reading and writing, I really want to be employed in these jobs, but you know, some families have their own way of crushing dreams and ambitions. It's my last year of high school. I hope everything ends well
Thanks so much for this in-depth yet high-level breakdown! It was very helpful. I must say though, I'm a little disappointed that you left out sound! As both a visual and audio artist, I need to know ALL my options. I guess it makes sense because you mainly do visual art, but still 😔😢
I have so many projects/ideas and I’m a little scared that it won’t be good or my drawing skills aren’t my type of taste I want to be a character designer just character design nothing else and sell them to other people to make the story I hope my goal comes true 🥲🥲🥲
Thank you for this. I really wish there had been a resource like this when I was in college because honestly no one in my department had any guidance in getting into the animation field (was at a liberal arts college on the East Coast and YT was in its infancy) and it would have been useful to know which introductory positions were available when job hunting in my early 20s.
Thank you for the information and words. I am trying to learn about and move into illustration and animation and I didn't know where to start. A friend sent me this video and I was amazed and impressed by the many different areas that exist in the entertainment industry. Animation. I loved it. Please, would it be possible for you to comment on/inform me about the different specificities that exist in each area? In many other videos, like a series... For example: - Rigger = what are the lines and different possibilities... - Effects animator = what are the lines and different possibilities... - Layout artists = what are the lines and different possibilities... and others, and if possible, give examples with images. I am from São Paulo/São Paulo - Brazil / Visual Artist, looking for new fields... Thank you again and sorry for the long text/request.
Hi Michelle, is age ever an issue for qualifying for a job, including being a production assistant? Thanks, and as always, your videos are so informative! ☺️
First time watching your content and the first words you say are “hello b*tches”and the first thing I do is hit subscribe 😂 I’m a beginner just getting into it. You’ve officially made me excited to start this journey 🤩
I would love to know which of these jobs (besides writing, you mentioned that was sometimes outsourced) that would be doable on a work-from-home basis. California isn’t an option for me!
Thank you for posting this video! I found it fascinating to learn about all the different roles. After hearing you explain all the various positions and departments within animation, it was also easier to imagine the workflow and process. Something you mentioned stuck out to me; are most of the jobs you listed project-based? I love the idea of working on a project until it concludes, but I would like to work on another one without having to look for employment again. Are these contract-based jobs? TIA!
this is pretty much the biggest question i had about the industry. At no point did anyone give me a full clear list of what there is to do. I am also curious, i often see creators or other artists listed as doing multiple of the jobs you mentioned: in a lot of my favourite shows the creator worked both in in writing full scripts, as well as animating some scenes or storyboarding. I would love to know how jobs in aniamtion overlap and how flexible each person's role is
Thank you I am currently going to school for 2d animation and was interested in this. I am kinda swamped because of midterms, but during my break I want to put together a portfolio. Do you have advice on making a portfolio and highlight reel?
I have just completed my bachlor's in design(multimedia) and now i am preparing to do my masters in computer graphics. As you said that 3d animator just rigs the modelled mesh, what kind of pieces should i add to my folio to get admission at sheridan. plz guide asap.
When people say there are no art of animation jobs
This video: Liessss
yepppp!
Thank you, geez.. this is such an important topic that not many other artists cover.
Haha yeah, wish I had something like this growing up, but glad this can help!
Studios in California: Yeah your job is to paint the fur of the main character's concept.
Studios in my country: Yeah on Monday you do character design, wednesay is for backgrounds and then you start animating and modelling until Sunda. Also, do you make good coffee?
jesus god that sounds intense

Eesh image being an indy show with just a talented freinds group 😳
I'm glad you included information on the 3D side of things. It seems like UA-cam pushes the aesthetics of 2D, so a lot of young artists don't realize how many jobs there are in 3D.
Opposite way around for me and i really like cartoon styled art

Man sameeee would love to be a part of a project or something

Omg THANK YOU SO MUCH I’m literally crying!!! This really did help I was so lost Thank you

Thank you for this. I’m currently in my final year of animation college and want to be in prop design/layout artist.

how does one decide on a job to focus getting better at?

I might actually like background artist. Is there anything I should include in my portfolio specifically geared towards that?

what if I want to do it all :')
Great video! I was wondering roughly how many people would there be within each role? I know it might be different depending on each project
Who dose the line work an animation ? the In-betweener or the colourist who dose it ?
I want to do 2D VFX but is that also categorized under 2D animator? Is most of 2D VFX outsourced as well?
I didn't see timers mentioned.
Hello!
Do you feel like where you live has an impact on the jobs you can have in animation? Have you ever had to relocate for work? Thank you!!!
Is there maths and physics involved in animation ? Like even 2d animation ?
