Without this scene, it makes Betty getting all of those lights in the movie useless. Especially that traffic light. With out this scene, it feels incomplete.

Netflix has the theatrical cut, I'm thinking DVD has them in format of deleted scenes, and NBC and ABC have decided to merge them in their airings

RIGHT?! I have thought, for years now, that this was a Mandela effect....
I always had a soft spot for Betty in this scene. She worked her butt off to make her display the best that year. Martha did the same for hers too, but Betty won the contest hands down, and the Mayor robbed her of it just so he could suck up to a woman who ultimately loved his rival over him. It shows just how pompous and corrupt he truly is, willing to crush other people's spirits, dreams, and hard work just as long as he gets what he wants.
I wish there could have been a scene at the end, just before Martha returns his ring, she reveals that she found out that Betty truly won the contest and gives her the trophy, which Betty is touched by. And there was a scene in the film's novelization, if I can remember, where the Mayor gets a kind reminder of what the TRUE meaning of Christmas, with the Grinch's parents (those old women who raised him) forcing him to wear a sweater similar to the one they made for their adoptive son, much to his embarrassment.
There might be a scene like that in the never-released 4 hour rough cut of the film. I'm hoping it will be releases someday so we'll know for sure.

It was in the original theater showing and the VHS but they cut it out in the DVD and digital version. I saw this movie when it first came out in theaters.

From the extended version, Martha and Betty are seen competing in the lighting contest. Both sides are neck-and-neck in the contest, lighting up part after part of their Christmas light displays, until Betty lights the final part of hers which clearly puts it superior over Martha's. The judges are very impressed to the point of agreeing with this and write her name down as the winner, which would finally make Betty's dream of having the best Christmas light display in Whoville and beating Martha come true. *But Mayor May-Who* plays favorites and trying to butter up Martha for the later marriage proposal, disregards the judges' votes & claims that it's a "split-decision": and declares Martha the winner, leaving Betty feeling crushed and disappointed, *and showing just how corrupt the mayor truly is.*
100% If there's anyone to blame for Christmas getting stolen it's the Mayor, the Grinch was starting to like Christmas again, then he pulled that razor shit and reminded him why he hates Christmas

I remembered seeing this scene everytime I watched the movie growing up!! and I watched the movie again for the first time in a few years and felt like I was going insane when this scene never played

It's weird that they cut this scene, especially because all of the other scenes of the mom getting ready for it are still in it. I was watching the movie and noticed it was missing right away lol

Same here I have it on dvd now and that part is cut. I tried telling my boyfriend about this scene and he looked at me like 'what are you talking about?' I showed him this video and he said that he has never seen this in any of the versions he has watched of the movie.
Such a shame they cut this scene from the movie now. They allude to the upcoming competition throughout the movie but don't show the actual contest. I think they didn't want to take away from the Grinch and interrupt the flow of his scenes at the Whovalation, idk, but still it's not that long a scene. Plus it makes it more satisfying when Martha helps Betty save Cindy when she and the Grinch crash into town.
Also I gotta say, isn't Cindy's dad so wholesome? He's just the best.

So if your saying this isn't a deleted scene then show me this scene in the theatrical release of the film as I've only seen it in the ABC channel airing of the film and not present in my VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray and 2015 Remastered Blu-Ray.
Who else remembered watching this scene & no one else did so whenever you talked about it everyone would look at you like you were crazy.
My son and I just had this conversation, he told me I was crazy and to prove it, so I did. Sure wished it was still in all the movies aired, it was a great scene.

I have a book on the making of the movie called "How the Grinch Stole Hollywood." In the book, Ron Howard said that the lighting contest was hard to cut out because it was very funny and "visually exciting."
I was today years old when I realized this was a deleted scene... I just always thought I missed this part every time ive been watching it recently, until today when I watched it all the way through.

I'm glad they cut that scene out. Because not only Betty Lou Who lost the contest but the Mayor 2:22 cheated on her and chose Martha May instead. Mayor May Who is trashed. Not only for bullying the Grinch as a kid but stealing the Grinch's girlfriend Martha May. Also earlier in the film before the Whobilation Betty found the traffic lights for the lighting contest. But then cars crashed behind everyone. Betty Lou Who should not only get disqualified but she should also get arrested for not only stealing the traffic lights in town but causing a car accident before the event.
I was looking for this scene for so long on Netflix the other night 😭😭

I remember seeing this scene in the original theater showing and the VHS copy I had. Later on I got the DVD and was so mad that they cut this scene. Then when they made it digital I'm like maybe they put it back in and was hugely disappointed when they didn't.

Martha's patterns look neater, but the shape of the patterns just looks generally good as opposed to radiating specifically a Christmas theme. All of Betty's lights are focused on an exaggerated Christmas theme, and that's a good thing when it comes to this contest.
My version: The Mayor: and the winner is... Betty Lou! (yelling and screaming for betty) Martha May: (very angry and cross at betty for her winning she storms in her house) THIS IS NOT OVER BETTY!

I think the real reason why Martha May Whovier had the best lights was to attract the Grinch's attention. She wanted the Grinch to see her display from his hovel up on Mt. Crumpet, hoping he would come back to her.

This scene needs to be in the movie on streaming bc it showcases the mayor's further corruption and it gives a purpose to the scenes where Betty is pulling lights off!

I understand the complaints about this scene being cut (especially since the movie flip-flops by including it in some versions), but looking back at Betty and Martha’s intro scene, there’s never any mention of a Christmas lights contest. The lack of a contest makes Betty’s desire to outdo Martha’s display seem more pointless and petty, which I actually think works fine for the message of the movie.
They alluded it to it at least twice I can think of. In the beginning of the movie when Cindy and her dad get home from shopping to see her on the roof when Martha showcased her machine. And again when they were going to the Whobilation nomination when she stole the stop light.
I say that they should've left that scene in. Would've added a lot more depth as to how corrupt and evil and heartless and inhumain and how much of a monster the mayor really is

The lighting contest was pure shade.
This scene was on ABC one night with commercials and it was the first time I had ever watched this scene. Had no idea it was even in the movie. Same thing when I watch Harry Potter on cable networks with commercials, I see 4-5 scenes I didn't know were in the movie.

My thoughts on this scene.
1: why did they cut it out? The already have the scene were Betty and Martha are getting ready for the contest and in a few book copy’s of the film I own they include this scene witch will confuse a lot of kids why it wasn’t in the Film!
2: I have a suspicious feeling that there was a scene were after the grinch bring back the gifts martha gives her trophy to Betty much the the mayors dismay no one says it exists and I can’t find and proof that it was official but it’s just a hypothesis I have a strange feeling it was filmed some time!…

This scene made me feel bad for both ladies. Betty has the best lights, but the fucking Mayor just wanted Martha to win, whom I also feel bad for. Not only is the Mayor a dick to the grinch (Although he's the reason the Grinch hated Christmas in the first place!) But he also is a dick to some of his peers. Especially the Lou whos. This scene shows more of that. Also glad that Martha dumped him for the Grinch.
