- Rare video footage of No Doubt playing live during their early years when John Spence was in the band. This was taped at Fender's Ballroom in Long Beach, California, where No Doubt headlined Mod Expo III in 1987 (I don't know the exact date). In this clip they play a cover of "Baggy Trousers" by Madness. Video quality is poor due to the age and condition of the tape.
R.I.P John, you rocked!
+LEAH HIGGZ how did he die?
+Gregory Alexander
Suicide by Gunshot.
+Paul Graves it makes no sense that this black man who founded this band would kill himself, something seems strange.
+Gregory Alexander he was only 18 years old
+Randy Clark I doubt that was what he was implying. anyways, John was very depressed which is why he killed himself. its very sad
Gwen has such an incredible story because she just happened to be around when her brother put the band together and had no real drive to be a rock star, she just joined in. John encouraged her to join in and sing more even though she was a shy/reluctant teenager. It’s people like John that see the potential in others and want them to shine their brightest, if only he would have been able to see that within himself. Having the right people around you to lift you up makes a world of difference 🙏💛😢
No Doubt was not the headliner - this was their first show. They were on pretty early in the day. Thanks so much for posting, takes me back!
When Gwen was a backing singer.
What a great video. Old school ND never fails to blow me away.
That bouncing crowd is just hypnotizing!
wish this song had a studio recording
madness - baggy trousers
R.I.P JOHN SPENCE....
This was when I first saw them back in the day!! John was the bomb!! They were sooooo good back then!!
I was at that show and it was such fun!
Lies
@@eazye519 hahahah got em
Wow!
Holy shit, that's amazing! Cool Madness tune, I didn't know that much video with John & ND even existed.
RIP John. I wish I could’ve seen this live but I was 1 and in Puerto Rico.
ha! i was at this show! thanks for posting the video!
Sad about John Spence. Dying by suicide at such a young age. Why would someone with so much talent take their life at age 18? So very tragic!
You know, suicide is very strange in black people.
Huh, excuse me? Did yall ever heard of depression/anxiety???
@@bielaggs Me, I'm surprised I have made it this far.
what was the reason?
@@bielaggs isn't it rarer at that age? did he seek help?
He used to make us laugh, now he makes us cry ❤️
I wonder where no doubt would be today if he lived?
might not have been as successful honestly
Gearz86 I wonder the same thing... I think John could've been a revolutionary. 💔
Probably no where, because America is far too racist. They needed a white face to lead in order for white people to buy their music.
@Logan Stroganoff I agree, they would have still gotten big, maybe not as big or maybe even bigger, personally I think they would have just taken a little longer.
@@noblelies fuck you, reason why the world still picks sides, can't see good for what it is
Fucking Beautiful! some ND fans weren't even born yet! HA!
Always loved no doubt but I recently discovered their early years with John Spence as lead and it’s unfortunate how soon he lost his life. Definitely would’ve been great to see how him and Gwen could’ve been together if he seeked help but Ik he’s in a better place now. RIP John Spence
He sound great. That is where Gwen got it from.
I think so too. It’s also where she picked up her swagger
Why John? Why?
Hopefully you rest in peace.
John R.I.P. Hopefully you feel good now.:,/
The first time l listente that song l thought the band wasThe Special from the UK No doubt always going to be my Best band ever thank Gwen and Eric Stafani...
You can tell Gwen didn’t like being backup singer. She ever put her mic up just to just dance.
I wasn't at this show, so thank you for posting.
I was at this show, I was 14😁
How was it?
madness was the influence that started no doubt, love madness anyway, but more now because of it.
This the whitest shit ever lool
Its a punky baggy trousers!
only no doubt (eric and gwen) really knew about ska, before madness gained popularity in america. they rule.
That's... really, really not true. :)
they love madness!
check that place out! what a wonderful song for a wonderful band.
I live ska music. It still lives in LA. Backyard shows spanking the night away
what are you guys talking about.2 tone had a huge following in america.
Thanks for sharing
John was crazy... Why did he take his own life??? I wonder if gwen or her brother knows... I want to know why...
Her brother won't speak about it. He started to talk about it in the Behind the Music he said he thought it may have been the pressure. And then he stopped the interview. I think that's what it was, he was so afraid of not making it that he just couldn't go through with it didn't think he could take the rejection if it came.
He wasn’t a good singer and it was too much i supposed ugh wish Gwen step up sooner
MADNESS....
Okay correction : Tony wasn't even in the band at this point. He was watching the show, and then tried out a little while later....before Spence's suicide, though.
Wow! Se parece a Mr. Bungle en sus inicios...
wwoww
soo cool!!
^^^^
LOVE IT!
Haha!! I was born in the year they played this!!!!
No you weren’t
I don't think they'd have become as successful with John instead of Gwen as lead singer. Watching all of the videos I've came across from this show, I think with either they are a great band, but this sound was maybe 6 or 7 years too late to become popular (although when I saw The Specials in 2009, there were many sort of 15-30 year olds there, so I might be wrong). I wish John was around for an album though, they had some good stuff at the time
You're totally right. This type of sound would never have made it in the late 1980's in the States, especially when grunge came along. They would have stayed OC legends, and that's probably it. Gwen's music writing blossoming post grunge couldn't have been better timing, as I don't think Tragic Kingdom does well in the early 1990's, if listened to at all. They also filled a huge hole over seas, in both Europe and Asia, who were out of new sounds for their alt-rock movements, and hadn't heard a strong female one. It's funny how Tragic Kingdom started on alt-rock stations at the beginning of Tragic Kingdom, then was played by straight rock and pop rock two years later when they finally came home after touring, especially in Europe and Asia. No Doubt became a hugely influential band, especially in places like Japan, the Netherlands. and north central Europe.
did they have album with john spence??
i might be late for answering this but sadly no
I wonder how many of the members who left are regretting it now lol
exactly he wasnt checking gwen at this point tho coz he was scared eric would mind. Btw does anyone else find it wierd how there covering a Madness song, i didnt even think they were big outside england
I am from Toronto and Madness was HUGE among the punks and skinheads in the early 80's. I wasn't even hardcore punk but I still had One Step Beyond on vinyl.
Eric skooled ya!
Gwen was in love with John and Bradley’s voice because she thought he was a brotha.
oh fuck
BLOOD SACRIFICE??????????
No Doubt could have been a good band if John Spence didn't kill himself.
The guy was nothing special
FFS he killed himself and ppl still won't shut up. Pathetic
They had a huge horn section
