You can make a nearly silent racked server. Just use a 4U chassis that can use big slow fans instead of those tiny fast ones. At that point it's basically like any other PC, potentially quieter. The loudest part of my home lab is the hard drives spinning up.
Documentation is absolutely essential. In fact, I would argue the first Docker image you should get running on a new home lab is some kind of wiki. I like DokuWiki because it's just text files, no database, so in the event of catastrophic failure the documentation is still easy to access in a readable format. But it's still a full-featured wiki. Everything I do gets documented fully, no matter how basic the task. Means every new task I do takes much longer, but once I've done it the first time I can completely reproduce it perfectly, and much quicker, and understand exactly what to do and why.
I use obsidian. I fully agree with this
Split ortholinear keyboards are the best. Once you get the layout that works for you, you are golden.
I just checked, I only have over 1400 packages installed on my HPotato. Matt having 6000 packages installed on his OpenSuse install blows my mind.
Matt, you can manually adjust the fan speeds on enterprise servers to make them bearable for home lab use. I had to do that with my R730xd and it's been running like a champ at 15-20% Fan speeds and it's but a whisper.
If I had unlimited money for a home lab, I'd buy me time to spend there. ))
I'd buy-out the data center down the street from me, then lay down private circuits from it directly into my home.
Tyler, as a proxmox replacement you can use the combo NixOS/incus.
doom mode is an alternative dropdown gnome extension you might check out
a phrase i've been using a lot lately, both with with linux and gaming: "multimonitor users have no rights"
i've been on 3 screens for the last many years and i will not go down from that.
this causes untold heartache and misery with such things as: steam link, vr, games that only support fullscreen and not borderless windowed mode, games in proton not locking my mouse in borderless window mode, the list goes on.
your bouncing between gnome and kde sounds like me for the past month finally thinking i've got my linux gaming setup squared away only to hit some absolute showstopper that has me back on windows for the primary rig.
LM is good for new users of Linux. But still must learn the basics and even the deeper level too. My only issue with at least with Ubuntu based alongside Debian is the default swappiness though. I don't like it being at 60. lol Would be bad for SSDs. For regular HDDs even would be best if it's at say 25 maybe lower as well.
Freedom
what is that google photos replacement that you people keep talking about??

I literally wanted to ask the same question. Thank you.@@TheLinuxCast
the problem is not wayland the problem weird ass hardware
you guys totally blew that money wrong.. start your own company that pays the best developers in the world a fair wage to dedicate all their time to linux desktop foss... after the mcmansion, car and nuclear bunker server room of course.🤣
I'd fund a proper Photoshop replacement, LOL.
kde 6.1 is stable imo
why do need a homelab? I've got millions of spare cycles with my dollar store computer?
