- Ever thought about using a soil probe to search for relics. coins and bottles? In this video I give some basic instructions and talk about how and why treasure hunters use soil probes. I also tell you about a very dangerous situation that could develop whenever you are using a spring steel probe. I then dig a few holes to show the soil profiles and explore some ground anomalies that I found with the probe.

This is Kenny... I'm a land surveyor and use probes to find stone boundary corners. There is a place called Ben Meadows that you can get a "good" one. There may be other links on here to find one but that's where we get them for our survey crews. I made the bag for Chigg because he inspires me with each and every video he makes and I wanted to contribute to his efforts. Making videos is a ton of work and costs lots of time and money. As for the bag making it's of interest but not an item currently. (if you read this...your very welcome Chigg, glad to see it worked out)

If I make a video about them on my channel that means i’ll start making them for people that want them. Maybe just check in from time to time. My main goal was to keep Chigg going with equipment. His videos bring a lot of people smiles, education, adventure and entertainment every day.
I’ve been in the underground utility industry for over 48 years, and this is where the “probe” originated. The industry has moved away from metal probes for a variety of reasons, the most important being an electrical strike. Today, we used a Kevlar encased fiberglass probe, which is considerable lighter than steel, stronger than steel, And more flexible than a steel, thus you can’t bend one out of shape. The tip, will be made from Brass, and have the attributes that you described on your probe. While metal detecting in the wild you may never run across a hot high voltage line, why take the chance when you can use a lighter and better probe. I've been digging up a old Blacksmiths shop. So far lots of horseshoes! I did find a brass Leech&Rigdon Confederate spur from the site. It made my day!

I went bottle hunting many a time in Red Bluff Ca. We used a probe the same as yours but there was a steel bell fit to the top of the probe where it met the "T" and it helped to define rocks from glass, a pretty unique design that worked better than any other probe we used........
just took a probe use and safety class for excavating at natural gas sites here in WVa.. Your video is better than a $300 class nothing about the prob breaking and making a shanekabob. Thanks

You know I never knew probing could be so interesting. It is really good of you to give us such a knowledgeable lesson concerning the proper methods of safety. I have no doubt that you will save lives with this.
For a moment when you dug up the rail I felt like I was suddenly on, "Time Team", and wished you could dig until you had the whole darn thing dug up. You never know what you might find along that rail. Please do return soon and dig up that other hole with the brick too, because the suspense of what could be in those holes will gnaw at my brain and drive me crazy, worse than mad cow.
I did really enjoy this video, especially the train whistle at the end. If I didn't know better I would think you were paying those trains to follow you around wherever you go. Are you laying tracks behind our backs, or just off camera?! LOL

Thanks for sharing that info. I remember all the hunts being dung at the fall JGD, and I found it intertesting. Now I have a better idea on how to approach probing for huts....if I decide to give it a try.

thank you for all the great tips and advice I am going to definitely apply those when I go out and dig I've been watching quite a few of your videos on the metal detecting and the probing of the soil I appreciate all of the things that you do for everyone that that watches and is new to the Hobby and trying to get into all these things I found a bottle dump and I'm going to definitely use your Technique and see that if I actually have found what is truly a a bottle dump and see how much deeper that this actually is also my name is Richard and I am with three Aces metal detecting Three Aces being myself and my two children we are all going to be using Garrett ace 300 250 or 400 we just have the one at Garrett ace 300 right now but we're actually with all the change that we find we're going to purchase the next one and the one after that with the change that we found along the way wish us luck thanks bud

Wow, scary thought, if that probe broke while pushing so hard, very horrifying to even think about. Like I said my dad used the oil dipstick from a car, lasted him 40 years, but I don't believe he ever had to push that hard doing probes in the mangrove swampy areas!

I spent a lot of time tracking water mains and tiles with a probe. Be sure to check the very tip also. Bricks and tile leave orange dust on the point. Check first with utilities. Some power lines are underground. (ouch!!)

The top also serves as a scratchy noise maker when it goes thru a privy loaded with 1898 SC Dispensary bottles. You can fill it when it punches thru the broken pottery and glass in the pit or privy.

Really liked the video! Want to really improve your video's? Place the camera so your always looking toward the sun. When it's off to the side everything is in the shadows and a bit hard to see. Still a great video! Nice bag! Only thing I could see to improve it would to make flaps inside it. The flaps would go inward. To get things out you would take the flaps and fold them out. That way it would be hard to loose things and still easy to fill up with those gold coins and beer tabs.

I really want to see what you find Chigg when digging up that old rail. Perhaps because of the clay it was just a narrow gauge system to fill carts etc. Won't know till you can get to it. Great vid, the best of the recent ones, apart from the Chipmunk holding a hoard of gold which is why you managed to detect it! :-)

Jan Warriner most of my family is in Idaho. But it could be somehow. I was at the Edgar Allen Poe grave yard in Baltimore one time and kept getting this weird feeling to look under the church through a door window and when I did I couldn’t see anything so I kept walking around. Well I got around to the other side and had that feeling again this time the window was in better shape and I could see through it and I almost s%!t myself. I saw a catacomb that had the name Meredith across the top of it.

You maybe might think about getting yourself some of them there surveyors marker flags. the 18" wire ones would last you quite some time. That way when you find a spot you want to mark to go back to. You just mark it with a flag... I know y'all use sticks and stuff y'all find laying around near by. But sticks can get walked on or kicked out of the way. but a wire flag people notice. Also if friend might just happen by and want to help give you a dug. You can simply tell your mate to start to dig over by the flag marker. I know I know the chances of a mate coming out to help you dig for just because he has nothing better to do are about 1 out of 75 but you never know... But you know for sure where your mark is when you flag it... And if it be a field the farmer don't plow then chances are good the if you didn't have time that day to dig your hole because maybe you got rained out. You can go back out and there be your flag and you can jusrt start digging without having to refined the spot... Just a thought... Be blessed... BBE..

We use these at cemeteries to make sure there isn’t someone buried where we are about to dig. Older sections have poor records so you need to be certain. Our probe has a movable handle that you can use to “hammer” the probe into the ground.
archaeology also using ground-penetrating sonar radar for mapping the floor or possible building site.

Question ? does a lot of rain high water table affect the use of the probe ?
Is it best to let the field dry out first before probing for old privy or bottles ?
Or is the void disturbed earth noticable regardless of being wet or dry ??

Ever since the colonostomy I just avoid anything that's got the word probe in it. But for chigger I'll make this one exception.
i have a ground probe 4ft long the handle is fiberglass as is the rod with a metal tip these are used in the telephone industry ,if the metal tip hits anything energized you won't get electrified so when probing use extreme care
The steel is probably made from the leaf spring suspension, or just regular springs but leaf springs are easier to work with.
built a lot of houses over the years, I have seen houses from civil war era used some railroad track as a lintel or a threshold
