Composition of Luminosity

A lot of artists are curious about how to create luminosity in their paintings. This video focuses on the components of composing with colors to achieve luminosity which is the end result of different kinds of color relationships within a painting. I explain the difference between “color depth” and “color light” - terms I’ve come up with to understand the process. If you are an artist compelled to make luminous paintings, this video is for you!

Exactly! I just finished a painting yesterday and am ruminating on what words best "translate" the visual story here... without using words that are overused, IMO! Thanks for your comments....

Thanks Marianne. It is useful to see, in your examples, that the colour relationships can be subtle, and in separated locations. I find myself repeating a colour in various spots, but not altering its intensity. This was a good reminder to be thoughtful.

Hello Susan! Welcome and many thanks for your kind comments about the WAM content. So glad you found me! As for your question about varnishing... It is a personal choice to varnish an oil painting. Some artists feel it is necessary, others prefer to keep the painting unvarnished. Where do I land on this point?! I varnish a painting when the shine of the paint is uneven in a painting and I want it the surface to be more uniform in the paint quality. I hope this clarifies the question to varnish or not! Cheers to your artistic practice...

Hello Marianne. I paint with acrylics. Is it possible to create luminocity with acrylics?

yes! though oils will always be more luminous.

I use glazing with transparent acrylic inks to get a more luminous look with acrylics. I’m in love with how oils look, but I’m going to stick with acrylics.
