  • It's been a few months since I've worked on three paintings sitting in my studio, and quite honestly, I've been a bit "stuck" with them. In this video, I talk through why I believe I'm stuck and what I do to get unstuck. I'm curious to hear from all of you about ways you get yourself unstuck. Thanks for watching! #oilpainting #abstractpainting #paintingprocess

Sick as it may seem, I really enjoy the challenge of overcoming obstacles. To me, real happiness comes from overcoming problems and noticibly growing by the success. If it wasn't for the "wasted time", I'd do nothing but create problems for myself so that I could ride the endorphin high once I solve them. I guess that's why I do organic abstracts...lots of creative "painting myself into a corner."

so very timely and helpful....it's one of my main concerns these days, how to go back into a painting that was started a few days or weeks or whatever, and i feel so stuck! Currently this happened in a rather dramatic manner...we've just had a 3-4 day snow storm, dropping about 100-130 cm of snow on us here in Cape Breton, i haven't been able to get to my studio for the past week....or anywhere else for that matter.....finally we've been dug out! tomorrow i can get back into my studio...so off to watch the other videos, again thank you so much for your generous spirit - cheers, linda

and that proves something: It's my iPhone that is the problem! I sometimes do videos on my own, using my iPhone camera, but this one was shot using my YT assistant's iPhone. Off to get a new iPhone... 🙏😊

When I am stuck, it is usually because some elements of my painting clash with each other. Then I usually glaze the painting with a complementary color. Once that dries, I like to place cut-out masks of my favorite shapes on the surface, and glaze the remaining area with a contrasting color and value. Finally I sometimes add areas of line or pattern in very light and/or dark tones to give it more excitement. If that does not satisfy my eye, I may repeat the process.

I’m looking forward to how you resolve these wonderful paintings! This is a timely video as I am currently trying to resolve a still life I did as a demo!

How about a place of inertia?

    • @mariannemitchellwholeart

Being steeped in inertia is hard... and with some conscious inner talks that acknowledge your current state while kindling the fire to at least do reckless abandon on a "scratch paper" substrate, I'be been able to eventually move forward. I hope this addresses your question, love to hear more about your reference to "inertia" 🙏😊
