Just wait until you see the sequel. It's truly an occasion where the sequel far outweighs the original. If for no other reason than it being utterly bonkers. Thanks and keep up the great work, Kat!
Between the talking gremlin, Rambo Gizmo, sexy gremlin, John Glover's hilarious performance, and Hulk Hogan breaking the 4th wall, 2 is infinitely better IMO. You still get Joe Dante in the director's chair and Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates starring.
The irony of Gremlins 2 is that although Dante didn't want to make it initially, and only agreed to do it if he could do something completely different, it is very much a continuation of the story, just the tone is far more heightened. He was essentially given carte blanche to have as much fun as he wanted, and took full advantage of it, ramping everything up to 11. The puppets in the sequel shine as highlights and are absolutely insane. I won't spoil it, but you even made reference to something that will make a special appearance! Just don't go into the movie thinking it is a horror movie or anything, it is more parody of itself than anything else. In some ways, the second one is an even more fun ride than the first. It is genre-bending, and can't really be classified into one thing. Definitely worth watching!
I'm not sure what poster you looked at but he original 1984 movie poster was much better for tone of this movie and didn't spoil Gizmo. It was traditional hand art of Billy from the neck down holding a box and Gizmo's right hand pushing the lid partly off and reaching for Billy's hand with his left, inside the box is dark and you see the gleam of Gizmo's eyes. And the movie tagline was: Cute. Clever. Mischievous. Intelligent. Dangerous.
Gremlins 2 is over-the -top silly fun! Its almost a parody of the first movie the way it pokes fun at itself while still having all the horror, thrills and fun of the original. I recommend.
Happy to see this bit of a palette cleanser to finish off the holiday season! I’m really looking forward to seeing what pieces of horror cinema you choose to subject yourself to in the coming year. I’m still pushing for some Universal Studios monsters, some Argento, Basket Case, Fright Night, Frankenhooker, Pan’s Labyrinth, X, and Pearl.
Nobody ever really talks about how Billy's mom wracks up a body count like Jason Voorhees. Fun detail about Mrs. Deagle: All of her cats are named after currency.
00:30: "I think the most horrifying thing that could possibly happen is this thing waking me up in the middle of the night when I have school the next morning and saying 'I'm hungry!'" Well. . . actually, yeah, that is basically the scariest thing to happen in this movie, more or less. . .
I never really thought of this as a horror movie, since my parents let me watch it as a kid, but I guess it has plenty of horror elements. It always seemed like a comedy to me.
this movie is really hard to define- in some ways it feels like jurassic park, where its more of an adventure but there are plenty of horror moments and commentary sprinkled throughout.
Really? The entire premise is about a bunch of evil little mutant creatures running around town killing people. Some cute elements and laughs don't alter that fact. It actually has a pretty dark / somber tone after awhile plus lots of violence and jump scares throughout. I think horror-comedy is the best way to categorize the film.
For me, Phoebe Cates's "worst thing that ever happened to me on Christmas" monologue is the ultimate highlight of the film. So dark and serious, yet so funny! I love how the film just stops dead in its tracks so she can finally tell us why she doesn't like Christmas. It's a brilliant moment, beautifully performed, in a film full of them.
@25:53 Indeed. Both films were shot in the same "town": a backlot at Universal Studios called Courthouse Square en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courthouse_Square
actually, mrs deagle is the very real type of person who existed back then, the one the cartoons were mimicking hahaha naw but this is a great movie and its sequel deserves a watch as well.
Composer Jerry Goldsmith deserves so much more credit and recognition for elevating movies from bad to good and good to great, based on the music scores that he crafted so deftly, meticulously and often with little advanced notice. He was a titan who influenced a generation of composers. It's a shame film music isn't treated with more respect.
Since this is the last one for 2023, many thanks are due to you Kat for a tremendously entertaining year. My prediction for the next one: the UA-cam audience at large will finally catch on to your considerable charisma, by year's end you should be at 150K+ subs, EZ. 😎
Howie Mandel was Gizmo's voice. A bunch of other people voiced/made the sounds for the other Mogwai/Gremlins. One of them was Michael Winslow, the sound FX guy from the Police Academy movies and many other 1980s comedies.
The thing about the woman in the chair to go upstairs... that scared me like nothing else. Even now after decades I don't like it My mom was thinking of getting one since her knees hurt when using the stairs, but I convinced her not to saying "if the lights go off while using it, it'll be uncomfortable to get down of it" At the end it was good she didn't because now we live on a one floor house. But Gizmo is still so adorable !🥰

I love Kate and Billy's relationship. She's clearly already into him, he's clearly already into her, she's just waiting for him get up the courage to ask her out. I especially love Zach Galligan's performance when he does, selling the nervousness and trying to be cool when he asks her, then his giddy excitement when she says yes, then him going back to trying to play cool. And Phoebe Cates' acting in that scene is great too, that "oh, finally, you asked," and "yeah, we both know you're a dork, but that's okay, that's why I like you." Zach and Phoebe were cast, apparently, because during their screen tests, they were kind of clowning around and Zach leaned his head on Phoebe's shoulder. They didn't think anyone was rolling, but apparently a studio exec saw that and said "See, he's already in love with her, just cast those two!" And they really do have great chemistry. Though in one of the commentaries, Phoebe Cates mentions hearing there was some concern from the studio on if she was "wholesome" enough to play Kate, since she'd just done "Fast Times At Ridgemont High."

It's a spoof of the first movie. I love it, but I certainly wouldn't say it outweighs the first.
@@jasonkeene9834 they're too difficult to compare because they're that different. 2 is a total comedy.
Love 2, but one is a legitimate American classic (and Xmas movie)
The actor who played the dad in this movie wrote the Three Dog Night song "Joy to the World (aka "Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog")"
Gremlins 2 is batshit crazy! Also, I don't know if it was mentioned yet but Gizmo was voiced by Howie Mandel
The square is exactly the same as back to the future
Loving your reaction, btw
Your absolute delight during this movie is so infectious! So glad you loved it! Merry Christmas!
And the movie tagline was:
Cute.
Clever.
Mischievous.
Intelligent.
Dangerous.
Gremlins 2 is over-the -top silly fun! Its almost a parody of the first movie the way it pokes fun at itself while still having all the horror, thrills and fun of the original. I recommend.
In my book Flashdance counts as a horror movie. As do all musicals.
"You got a pool cover handy?"
I love this channel.
What about the Coffin Joe Trilogy? but I don't know if she could handle the cheese scene in the third film Embodiment of Evil
25:35 Yes, the Universal back lot was the same set used for Back to the Future and other movies as well.
Mrs. Deagle flying out of the window still makes me laugh. 😂🤣😂🤣
hahaha yeah 😁😁
Mrs Deagle was cool, she followed the american dream, the pursue for more money
11:30 "Who just leaves their snack unattended." The true horror, unattended snacks
One of my absolute favorite Christmas movies! Well done! Also fun fact, the Kingston Falls set is the same set for Hill Valley in Back to the Future.
"You might say he was cutting it close."
You might amso say that Steipe was *sings* blinded by the light!
And Gizmo *sings* let the sun shine in!
Nobody ever really talks about how Billy's mom wracks up a body count like Jason Voorhees.
Fun detail about Mrs. Deagle: All of her cats are named after currency.
00:30: "I think the most horrifying thing that could possibly happen is this thing waking me up in the middle of the night when I have school the next morning and saying 'I'm hungry!'"
Well. . . actually, yeah, that is basically the scariest thing to happen in this movie, more or less. . .
I never really thought of this as a horror movie, since my parents let me watch it as a kid, but I guess it has plenty of horror elements. It always seemed like a comedy to me.
Haha… I had a Gizmo backpack when I started first-grade. 😂 Let’s pour out one for 80’s kids, amiright?
I watched a ton of Hammer Horror at the age of 11 years, and my grandparents actually encouraged it!
One Of My Favorite Syfi Movies !🫢🙆♀️🥰🖥
this movie is really hard to define- in some ways it feels like jurassic park, where its more of an adventure but there are plenty of horror moments and commentary sprinkled throughout.
Just in case it hasn't been mentioned, it is the same town square in Gremlins and Back To The Future
Great episode again Kat.. Such a classic. Fright Night (1985) next???
Seen this in the theater twice. First was in 1984 when I was 7 years old. Second time was in 2019. Two truly memorable movie theater experiences.
hope you get a chance to see the sequel, that one was crazy but super fun!
2:15 The town square of Hill Valley, covered in 'snow'.
actually, mrs deagle is the very real type of person who existed back then, the one the cartoons were mimicking hahaha naw but this is a great movie and its sequel deserves a watch as well.
Mrs. Deagle's are still around. We just call them Karen's now. 😂
25:38 Good spot! This is indeed the same outdoor set used for _Back to the Future_ a year later!
Yes, Both BTTF & Gremlins were shot in Courthouse Square on the backlot at Universal Studios Hollywood
25:30 you got a keen eye. as far as i know its the same production set. btw nice reaction to this classics!
I was a teenager when this movie came out, and I loved it! Several decades later, and I still love it. Ahh, the good old practical effects!
"They appreciate good cinema." ❤🎉❤🎉❤ You are the best.
Gremlins 2 with Hulk Hogan needs to be watched .
Howie Mandel was Gizmo's voice. A bunch of other people voiced/made the sounds for the other Mogwai/Gremlins. One of them was Michael Winslow, the sound FX guy from the Police Academy movies and many other 1980s comedies.
I think you’ll like gremlins 2!
The thing about the woman in the chair to go upstairs... that scared me like nothing else. Even now after decades I don't like it
My mom was thinking of getting one since her knees hurt when using the stairs, but I convinced her not to saying "if the lights go off while using it, it'll be uncomfortable to get down of it" At the end it was good she didn't because now we live on a one floor house.
But Gizmo is still so adorable !🥰
So glad you enjoyed watching one of my favorite Christmas movies! The creator of the gremlin creatures was Chris Walas, who also created the gruesome effects for The Fly.
Recommended horror movies:
Paranormal Activity
The Strangers
The Invisible Man
Gremlins 2: The New Batch
25:30 yes, same place than Back to the Futur, and Billy's mom is played by the same actress than Lorraine's mom.
1. Keep them out of bright light.
2. Don't get them wet.
3. Don't feed them after midnight.
Gremlins 2 is such a ride. Definitely worth watching it.
And the mom is such an awesome character!
Kat- you are the gift that keeps on giving! Every reaction video of yours is priceless!
27:15 you look like a supervisor making sure the job get's done 😂
Gremlins 2 is great! Not Christmassy, but really funny super fun, worth checking out for sure.
I don’t think I’ve even seen the second one
@@nsasupporter7557 You are missing out my friend, it's really goofy and kind of parodies itself. Kinda genius, give it a go!
@@DanielSmith-rt1wz ok, then I definitely don’t wanna see it if that’s the case. I’m already not big on sequels anyway.
But when a sequel parodies the original movie that’s a very bad thing, so I’m not missing out at all!
@@nsasupporter7557 It's the same director and almost all of the same cast and team. Joe Dante didn't want to just rehash the original idea and franchise it like other film series, so they decided to make it even more outlandish and absurd. It's generally accepted as an excellent follow up, i really love it, but its up to you.
@@DanielSmith-rt1wz that’s cool 🙂👍
I respect that 🙂 it’s just that whenever a person describes a sequel as a “parody of the original” that’s usually an acknowledgment that it was bad and they’re just mocking that sequel. I mean, like I said I’m not big on sequels anyway, but I try to have an open mind in alot of situations so maybe I’ll give it a chance
Lynn Peltzer, Billy’s mom, is one of my favourite badass 80s action heroes
Never seen Kat look so serious when the girl was sharing her father dying story.
And Phoebe Cates' acting in that scene is great too, that "oh, finally, you asked," and "yeah, we both know you're a dork, but that's okay, that's why I like you."
Zach and Phoebe were cast, apparently, because during their screen tests, they were kind of clowning around and Zach leaned his head on Phoebe's shoulder.
So happy to watch your reaction. Gremlins is one of my all time favorite movies. You should for sure watch Gremlins 2. It is just more. More Gremlins, more fun and so awesome.
my new favorite nighttime activity - watching these videos ! Almost like watching the film with you, it's very fun. You are an angel, and I love your sense of humor, wit, intelligence, positivity, and your movie choices (mostly). Gonna watch Halloween soon! Also, have you seen Aliens ? You gotta watch the 2nd one, since you like the 1st one AND Sigourney so much!
What a great time I had watching this with you!
10 badass, Gremlin blending, stabbing, and microwaving Mom's out of 10!
This was written by the makers of our childhood memories, Chris Columbus. Writer of this and also Goonies. Director of Home Alone, Mts. Doubtfire, The first two Harry Potters and more! Has produced a ton more. Howie Mandel voiced Gizmo! Michael Winslow involved as well!
Another horror Christmas classic! Love this movie. Keep up the good work, Kat. Happy Holidays! 🎉
25:27 Funny you mention that... The entire town square is the one from Back to the Future.
Gremlins 2 is a revenge film. The studio infuriated Joe Dante by even wanting to make a sequel, so he went out of his way to make the movie as ludicrous as possible.
In the bar at the beginning, Billy talks to Chuck Jones, legendary Looney Tunes animator.
Yes, that's Flashdance referenced in the bar party. Michael Sembello, who provided the signature songs for Flashdance, even made the song played here ("Gremlins...Mega-Madness").
At the inventor's convention, there's composer Jerry Goldsmith standing right next/behind Mr. Peltzer in the phone booth. Steven Spielberg is wheeling through the frame in an electric wheelchair. There's Robbie the Robot. And in the background there's the time machine from the George Pal movie, which vanishes from one scene to the next.
