  • Well... Marge went into labour... OVERNIGHT. ]
Which means I wasn't here to help her, and the lamb got stuck. Thankfully, her best skill is mothering... and she immediately accepted a quad as her own to foster!
Had a few strange lambs show up also... One with a wry neck, and one with what looked like a cleft palate?
Carissa and I also sorted our next breeding group... ALREADY.😳

Cinnamon gave you the perfect answer when you asked her if you were a bad sheep farmer. She said NAAAH. You are a great sheep farmer! You go above and beyond to keep your flock happy and healthy. Of course there will be tough times and hard decisions to make. But you are an amazing woman, mother, wife and farmer. Don't let anyone tell you different.

Wowzers! That's interesting. Mother Nature keeps everyone on their toes. It's truly amazing anyone is born; yet alive too??!! I'm a retired NICU/Peds/ReproEndo?infertility RN who went on to Hospice. So from pre-planning all the way to death, life is simply a miracle and awesome to behold.

Sometimes it is a good decision to give a "not so good animal " a pass. I read in one of James Herriot's books where a farmer had a very favorite cow that had a bad udder and the other cows were stepping on it when she laid down. The farmer decided after a few injuries that it was time. He called the knacker to get the cow. When the man got to the next farm the gentle old cow busted out and ran back home. The farmer decided she had earned her keep and put her in with the calves where she served as a nursemaid cow.

It must be so hard to see lambs born alive like that little deformed mouth one. I totally understand why you say you wish the universe would be kind and let it be stillborn. I am in total awe of what you do and how you care for the animals in your charge. Xx

Please please keep being a “bad” sheep farmer! It’s what I love most, and I think I am not alone! Your love of special members of your herd, as well as your diligent, day-in-day-out care of all your animals, makes these vlogs the highlight of my week. Sandi, not just your dedication and hard work but also your willingness to try to help lambs that aren’t quite there yet makes me smile, worry, and cheer along with you. Every day your work inspires and delights your followers. Thank you!

I have had a couple of wry neck babies. I don't splint them, just do some gentle stretching and massaging frequently during the day. Luckily I'm retired now, and am home to do that. It takes 3 to 4 days with this but they do straighten and the babies do well. Interestingly, this has happened in different years and with different mommas so I don't feel it was genetic more positional. I watch your vlogs religiously, as i am learning implementing, and improving the family homestead. You are a great teacher, thanks so much for sharing! Best of luck!

My first son... we didn't notice at first. LSS, it was Shoulder Dysplasia. His shoulders were real wide & was caught on my pubic bone. When the Dr used forceps he pulled too hard and ruptured those neck/shoulder muscles!! The physical therapy I had to do on my brand new baby was gut wrenching! He screamed horribly, his little body would turn completely RED. It was so painful for him. I would cry and cry, but Pediatricians made me do it several times a day until healed. OMG, Worst thing I ever had to do on my child. He's 48 now. Smart as a whip, beautiful, healthy and happy. Thank you Jesus! Second child... I switched Dr's. He told me I should have sued the First Dr!!!

That isn't a criticism: your English is genuinely *fantastic* and the they/them/their/they're/there is hard for native speakers.

As a long time massage therapist, I'm dying to get my hands on twisty-neck. You'd be surprised how much mobility can improve with the lightest massage if it'sjust soft tissue. Work in the direction the muscle goes and focus on the connection at the shoulder. Watch their face and body to make sure they aren't in pain. Try light warming circles with intention toward liquifying the tissues. I know you really don't have time, but if you're having to feed it and your hand is there anyway, maybe. I'm not trying to be bossy, you know MUCH more than I ever will! 💕

If those are the collars they put on your pets after they're spayed/neutered, it just keeps them from being able to reach their back or back end. It wont stabilize & straighten a neck like that lambs. The best u can hope for is for it to be a case of severe muscle spasm that will hopefully loosen up or if a splint like she finally got on it to straighten the neck & give it the chance to strengthen & tighten the muscle on the other side. Or pray for a miracle. If it's ligaments & cartilage, I believe its possible to do an invasive arthroscopic surgery and release the overly tightened ligament on one side. But that's not cost effective for a sheep farmer. It's something that u would probably only ever seen done at a veterinary school hospital for teaching & learning purposes. If u could only nurse that lamb through to the weaning, once it's on regular feed it would likely be able to feed & eat by itself & grow to maturity

It’s because you do that which makes you not just a good sheep farmer, but an EXCELLENT SHEEP FARMER; as you care more for your animals than anything else and THAT is what makes you incredible! Those who have love & empathy, no matter their profession, are truly Gods gift to the world. Thank you for that. Thank you for showing how it should be done. Not how money dictates, but compassion & love for the animals. God bless you. Much love, Shelbie =) xoxoxo🤍🥰🤍

You know Sandi, I’m just super impressed with this lambing. It’s always inspiring to see how hard you work to improve your operation. Even though crazy things are going to happen sometimes, it sure seems like you have fewer losses, with really healthy moms and lambs this go-around. Im thinking back to the days when your goals consisted of losing fewer ewes, or losing fewer lambs. It sure seems like mission accomplished. Well done!

The amazing circle of life! There has to be some bad to show off all your hard work for having such a healthy sheep farm! Its never easy when things like your deformed lambs happen but hopefully the neck curved lamb will do ok. One of our Alpaca babies had that neck issue too and by the time he was a few weeks old you never would have known he had any issues. Of course since he could'nt nurse at birth I had a bottle baby but I named him "Spirit" for having the will to try. He is a happy 3 yr old this year! Keep doing your best Sandi, and be strong when you can't control things around you. We love you all the more for being open and honest while sharing your joy in farming.

For the splinting dilemma, in other animals we often use KT (kinesiology/sport) tape for them. We often use it on horses for a number of different things. From drooping face to mildly deformed foal legs. Its really good for support weak muscles such as the neck as well. It's safe for most animals to use, I just wouldn't know how well it will stick to the lamb. They don't have much wool yet and sticks well to the fur coat of horses/dogs, so I'd think it would work well enough. ;)
Can stay on for several days, without it needing to be changed unless you wish to 'tighten' the stretch on the tape.

Oh My! So sorry about the deformities! I really appreciate learning about the process you go through to determine which ewes to keep and which to ship. It helps me understand more as a new sheep farmer. It doesn't make sense to keep the ones who you are likely to have problems - and stress - and heartache - with.
