Great video! The notorious maniac Cerutty at work. He looks in good shape for a guy who's 60+. And, at 1:51 - we see the legendary Peter Snell in action! Nothing can beat Cerutty's witch's brew of Stotanism. Cerutty to Elliot (5:31 to 5:43) "You may run faster, but you'll never run harder than that!"
All respect to Percy, who was a fantastic character and a great mentor, but he wasn't ahead of his time, he was out on his own 😂 He struck gold with Elliott who was a generational talent and became a great runner in spite of his training methods. Cerutty was a life coach, not a running coach.
I saw Herb Elliott doing his exercises on the beach at Portsea (100 km south from Melbourne) in 1958. I trained with boys in football in Melbourne in 1969 - Percy Cerutty came from nowhere to tell us to have the proper training to mark (catch) a ball. We laughed a bit. Good on him.
Footage ruined by the French voice over. I recall reading Percy's book 'Be fit or be damned' around fifty years ago and found it inspirational. Some have criticised Percy's training of Herb on the grounds that arguably Herb would have been faster if much of the strength / endurance sand dune running had been replaced with speed training. I personally completely disagree, but will not go into that here.
I do think Herb could have been a more complete miler if he'd concentrated more on interval work on the track, but since he was never beaten over the distance it's kind of irrelevant! Maybe if he'd waited for Tokyo he'd have needed some extra toe to see off Snell, which would have made for some epic viewing...
Could do without the French. I wonder how many athletes he burned out. I recall reading a book from him from the library many years ago. I think he likes to avoid tuning in concrete because it took away the “creativeness”
Have read every single one of his books, my dad and uncle both trained at Portsea.... this is great
This footage is priceless.
Thank you for uploading this. What wonderful footage. Great to see Percy Ceruty live as it were. He was my hero many years ago.

let's get back to basics .....run and push it ! This guy showed a lot of people how to exploit the possible
Cerruty was decades ahead of his time, brilliant, and look at his running technique, runs like a 30y/o
I am 30 and he runs better than me lol

Cerutty was light years ahead of his time.
WOOOO!!!! HERB ELLIOT!!!!
His running style was exemplary, his lifting style appealing. Still inspirational.
Did you mean 'appalling'?
@@Williamottelucas Did indeed!
Man, even on sand dunes, Herb could moove!
This video is brilliant.
An absolute Australian icon. If he was an American they would have made a movie of him! And Herb Elliott likewise.
there is a movie with him in it its the 4minuite mile

it’s a French newsreel

O. Run you. Great
O. Percy. Cerytu. Great..
O. Herb. Elliott. Great..
Cerutty died of ELA at 80. Life is cruel.

Meant appalling.

What nonsense; go and read about how Zatopek trained or Kipchoge now
Terrible weight lifting technique. Also all that hard training really aged those athletes. Herb Elliott was 23, but looked 43 in the face!
Herb always had that old man face 😂 but I have always wondered if Percy's particular brand of mentorship cost us Elliott v Snell at Tokyo 64...
