As the frontwoman and guitarist for Alabama Shakes, Howard has become one of music’s most celebrated figures. The band has won four GRAMMY Awards and topped the Billboard 200 with the Gold-certified Sound & Color, the follow-up to its Platinum debut album, Boys & Girls. Howard has performed everywhere from the Obama White House to the main stage at Lollapalooza, where she sang with Paul McCartney at his invitation.
In between albums and tours with Alabama Shakes, Howard grows restless. “To me, there is no time off - I’m a creative person and I need to create, or I just feel weird, not fully human,” she says. She’s channeled that relentless creativity into Jaime, her most revelatory work yet. Howard recorded Jaime after a cross country drive that took her from Nashville to a small house in Topanga, CA - a rustic Los Angeles county town wedged between the mountains and the beach.
She titled the album after her sister, who taught her to play the piano and write poetry, and who died of cancer when they were still teenagers. “The title is in memoriam, and she definitely did shape me as a human being,” saysBrittany Howard. “But, the record is not about her. It’s about me. I’m pretty candid about myself and who I am and what I believe. Which is why I needed to do it on my own.”

She reminds me of Prince . The level of talent and care given to their performance ,and her expression is just up there on a higher level . The back up vocals and musicians only cement my initial comparison even more .

Saw this show a few days later in Boston. General admission so was able to get in front row. Love the Shakes stuff, so wasn't sure how I'd enjoy this new material. I can say it DID NOT MATTER. First, her charisma, passion, ridiculous skillset, rapport with the audience, and tight band were all on display! Second, this material is really, really good. Gospel, blues, soul, rock, rap, all blended into an mesmerizing package. Brilliant.

I grew up late, missing the soul and heart of the 50s, 60s, 70s; but I still was drawn to those eras musically. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but I feel like I want it to mean something. Brittany Howard captures an great energy that I have always gravitated too, that true heart of our American music culture with sincerity and genuine tip of the hat of the great soul singers that came before. You do us all justice Brittany....sorry to put that weight on you. It's just what it is; you are just giving us good stuff. Stay impassioned and stay real in what makes you ....the lovely you that is.

I am so grateful to The Current for posting this concert. I wish I had been there live. Loved it. I instantly purchased the album after listening to it on youtube (sent here from the Daily Show). Even though I do have the Sound & Color Alabama Shakes album (love it as well), I did not know Brittany had a solo album so thanks Daily Show. Anyway, I've been listening to Short and Sweet on repeat for 2 days straight now and this is the Best Live version I have heard of it.
