- Line 6 Catalyst 60W Combo Review and Demo 2023
Today I got the chance to put one of the Line 6 Catalyst amps through its paces.
This amplifier is such a step up from previous Line 6 modelling amps. It's versatile and sounds great. Lots of onboard effects too. A joy to play through and this 60W version packs a punch.
This video includes my thoughts, the specs rundown, and a playthrough.
Thanks to Guitarworks Canada for lending me the guitar for the demo. Check them out here: guitarworks.ca/. Buy a Line 6 Catalyst amplifier from them here: guitarworks.ca/products/line-...

The Catalyst videos seem to have become few and far between since about 1 year ago. Thanks for doing this review, these are really good versatile workhorse amps IMO. Mustn't be selling well vs Katana, as I see many places have sales / price drops on Catalyst.
I've owned my Catalyst 100 for nearly a year, I use it with a HX Effects in 4CM and MIDI, which allows me to control the Catalyst amp patch selection (which I do when I change patches in the HXE) and turn the amp boost on/off using the HX Effects.
Really, but you have every model of Katana.
You're right about the sales, when I tried a Catalyst out at a Sam Ash, the salesman said they sold 10 Katanas for every Catalyst. I think part of the problem is the first time you play one, you have no idea how to change effects and channels, and it makes the whole experience frustrating. Now that I own one, it's all second nature and I really like the amp. My only complaint is that they didn't include a compressor function.
@@elliottsidewater1288 yes !!
I got my cat 200 about three weeks before the helix 3.7 update.. aah, that's why it was on special 🙄
Hey there my friend I got that same app. The problem that I have right now is how do I use the tuner on this app?
Do you prefer this over the Katana? I was considering a Blues Jr with Canabis Rex speaker, would the Fender be to loud for home use.
I'd say the Katana has the edge. It has better fx and is more of a one-stop shop guitar amp. The Line 6 Catalyst is good but if I had to decide it would be the katana. Those Fender Blues Jrs are pretty loud, which is good for live use in the right context. The Katana or Catalyst has more flexibility for home use. Depends on what you're primarily using the amp for. I find having a way to reduce the power of an amp helps a lot with volume flexibility, especially for home. But the Blues Junior is a great amp also. It's a valve also in a higher price bracket depending on the model you're comparing here. Hope that helps.
@@FretSuccess thank you for your advice I appreciate it
@@matthewstearle7395 Anytime. Now go buy one!!!! lol
@@FretSuccess will do,lol
I had a katana 100, but the catalyst sounds much better IMO…
So, I want to change effects from delay to flange and I put my ass to the audience and hold a button for 3 seconds and eurn another knob so its purple or blue and then adjust another dial and then Im back to face the crowd again? Or do I have to buy some Long loaf or a shortbread?
You could use a simple MIDI controller to change the effects, but only on the Catalyst 100 and 200.
I believe there is the Line 6 Catalyst LFS2 pedal to switch things on and off but if you want to switch fx for the 60w in this video then I believe you need to do it on the amp. I didn't realize that when I tested it, very silly. looks like the larger ones can use a MIDI controller. Depends on what size you're going for I guess.
@johnlund2654 Run pedals to the amp lol
I bought the 60 a few days ago. It is an awesome little amp! And I couldn’t believe how cheap it was!
Great value isn't it? Congrats!
You couldn't!? Nice advert.
I was hoping the usb was for connecting to a computer for recording with protools or logicpro etc.
You can I believe. I haven't tried it. Looks like you need an ASIO audio driver for it: www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/line-6-catalyst-combo-amplifiers-getting-started-guide/ you can also record using the line out function.
The USB cable helps the rats climb up and settle inside your amp.
I'm waiting on a 200, so excited ! Great video man, how loud is this 60 ? I'm a bit worried the 200 will be far too powerful now lol
Cheers dude. The 200 will serve you well. It will give you more headroom and options. Good pick. Maybe order some earplugs though for those drunken "crank the volume " nights 😉!
@@FretSuccess I've been running my hx into a poxy headrush frfr.. finally sick of that fight. Undecided yet whether to run the hx into it, or just use it as a midi switcher for the catalyst . It's great to have options!
@@Crabfather If you're worried it will be too powerful, you can dial it down to 100W or 1/2W. But having the 200W when/if needed is good. I also have the 200.
@@Crabfather I'm curious if you have run the hx into it and if so, did you use the four cable method?
@@LocalMachine I've tried running the hx into it, just through the FX loop Poweramp in mode and it works really well. I'm kinda in love with just using it as a standalone amp now though, for the simplicity. I mean I might use the hx through the loop just for effects (maybe). But it just can't do as good a job as the hx for recording.
Can I plug in my bass guitar in it
You can but just be careful with the volume so you don't blow the speaker. You'd be better with an amp designed for bass. Boss does a Katana Bass amp, which has great reviews and worth a play through: www.boss.info/ca/categories/amplifiers/katana_bass/
I never had an amp that HAD paces. They just sit there. Shudder a bit. But that's as wild as it gets. If you are a bedroom bandicoot - then get the 200w model. Let the dust in the ceiling and your old next door neighbour remember the good old days of tinnitus.
I imagine the 200W is a good option, especially for those wanting more gigging out of it. It depends what you're wanting. I think the Katana stuff has the edge. However, buying a decent clean amp like a Fender Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb and some good pedals is also an option. I'm loving the new Browne Amplification Protein Pedal through that. Not the cheapest but if you're gigging regulary, it's all about personal preference. I'm also hearing great things about the TONEX Amplitube pedal from IK: www.ikmultimedia.com/products/tonexpedal
OK It's great but not for a live performance. Got it
It's fantastic for a live performance.
Get the 100 or 200w if you need more. It definitely a generation on from the Katana II's.
@johnlund2654 Run pedals to the amp. No one is walking up to the amp regarding your previous comment of "put my ass to the audience and hold a button for 3 seconds and eurn another knob so its purple or blue and then adjust another dial and then Im back to face the crowd again?"
At first I thought the amp sounded like shit….but it was just the lame PRS….
Lol.
